Ping Yark: Number of Bajans living in U.K. plummeting

Between 1971 and 2011, the number of people born in Barbados and living in the UK fell from 27,055 to 18,672. This according to the latest issue of Ping Yark, the newsletter by, for and about Bajans in the UK.

The latest issue of our favourite expat magazine also contains stories on the following topics…

  • David Comissiong’s attack on the DLP and PM Freundel Stuart
  • The National Council of Barbados Associations (NCBA UK) as the tool of one man: Tyrone Roach as the Barbados Nation newspaper’s UK representative
  • Bruce Jenner
  • David Cameron
  • Rise of the UK Limes
  • Some historic happenings in Bygone Barbados – Marcus Garvey’s 1937 address, 1939 refusal of Jews fleeing the Nazis, Errol Barrow’s declaration that all white people in Barbados should be killed
  • Grenville Pillips II’s call for a new political party in Barbados.

Latest Ping Yark issue pokes, prods and slashes former UK High Commissioner Hugh Anthony Arthur…. other victims too!

Ping Yark latest issue free at BFP

Editor Leigh Bourne and his friends are at it again and they are not holding back.

Here’s a few of the topics in the first Ping Yark of 2014:

On former UK High Commissioner Arthur…

UK High Commissioner’s farewell party cancelled because only 10 people RSVP’d!!!!

“If Tony Arthur’s remit was to avoid the public’s gaze – keep in the background – smile as little as possible – come across as abrupt, aloof or act like Mr Grumpy ….then he was a roaring success !

Sadly …community wise …which is all we’re interested in …success is not a word you can attribute to Tony Arthur’s UK tenure. Many a time in these here pages have we had a pop at the relationship between him and his staff – and the chasm that existed between him and his deputy.”

Other stories in Ping Yark…

  • Grayce: 50 year old grandmother and pin-up girl
  • National Council of Barbados Associations “an entity with one foot in the grave”
  • Air Passenger Duty Committee fundraiser a failure
  • 2nd Generation Birmingham Independence Dance a disaster
  • Vince ‘Boo’ Nurse and Barbados Labour Party celebration EXCELLENT!
  • Sex in the school yard: journalists charged at The Nation

Ping Yark welcomes 2013 with scandals, talk and news: DLP UK fundraiser a washout, BLP UK rakes in big bucks!

DLP’s UK fundraising dinner a washout!

“Election time in Barbados soon and the party faithfuls over in away are busy mustering funding and sponsoring …or rather..should be !

The BLP should’ve had a serious chunk uh change from the recent ball …but how much can the DLP expect from the combined efforts of the £5k in debt DLP UK, their Women’s League, Friends org and or the partridge in a pear tree ? Not one red cent is the likely answer – so you’re on your own peeps!”

Who went to jail? Not him!

Oh yes! LOVE welcoming in the New Year with a new edition of Ping Yark: that irreverent Londontown newsletter published by homesick Bajans for other homesick Bajans.

Last October Ping Yark’s editor Leigh Bourne and friends focused on the train wreck of PM Stuart’s visit to the DLP’s UK branch and asked Where did all the DLP UK chapter money go?

Did the DLP make up the loss with a successful Independence Day dinner dance? Ha! Not bloody likely says Ping Yark’s newest issue. To bring in 2013, Ping Yark again looks at who’s making the money on Bajan events in the UK, and who went to jail. (He said he was back home to Bim for six weeks – but the truth looks like something else!)

Nothing like a new Ping Yark. Here’s a few examples of what you’ll find inside…

  • Bajan Independence Party at Sattavis Patidar Centre: somebody made big $$$
  • The Shame of the Royal Barbados Police Force
  • Why are Caribbean women perceived as dominant?
  • 2012 Independence Day: Four UK Dinner Dances rated
  • “Standards slipped at Reading …hit rock bottom at the BLP dance…”

Ping Yark’s first 2011 edition: David Thompson connection to DLP UK Chapter money scandal

Former Prime Minister personally funded DLP UK branch

Inquiring minds want to know: Was it really PM Thompson’s personal money going to the DLP’s UK Branch… or did the money come from DLP Party coffers in Barbados?

In December of 2009, Ping Yark, the irreverent UK Bajan newsletter covered the DLP UK Chapter scandal…

“Jaws outside the meeting dropped too when it was revealed that despite all the balls, dinner dances, dances, coach trips and excursions organised by DLP UK down the years – not a single penny in donations has been received by DLP HQ since 1986. Stark contrast to the New York branch it must be said. Dutiful fully paid up members here are right in asking – where did all the money go ? Who had / has it ?”

… from Dec 2009 BFP article: Ping Yark asks – DLP UK Chapter Money Scandal. Where did all the money go?

The DLP wants this story to die, but Ping Yark is having none of that.

Ping Yark’s January 2011 edition follows up and it looks like a cover-up in progress to us too. The newsletter is reporting that David Thompson was personally funding the UK Chapter when the money should have been going the other way.

Now the old DLP UK board members want back in. Wuhloss!

Ping Yark Hammers Barbados Government – Online Petition Demands Inquest Into Codrington Family Cave-In Deaths

Worldwide Online Petition Calls Upon Barbados Government To Hold An Inquest

The February, 2009 issue of the U.K. basted (or based?) Bajan newsletter Ping Yark is out and can be downloaded in PDF format here. (3.9mb)

Although still full of the naughty humour and cartoons you’ve come to expect from this irreverent offering, the latest comes down hard on a number of issues…

– Ping Yark says that the planning and building documents for the construction site at Arch Cot have disappeared from government files.

– An online petition has been established HERE to demand a full and public inquest into the deaths of the Codrington family who were buried alive when their apartment collapsed into a huge and well-known cave at a construction site.

– Currency transfers and restrictions to and from Barbados.

– Barbados Government’s restriction of free speech and Ian Bourne’s (Bajan Reporter) response to the Freelance Journalist fee.

– The troubles of Deputy High Commissioner Donville Johnson

– Updates on many community organisations abroad including the Barbados Cultural Organisation, Facebook groups and London’s Dutchpot Lunch and Social Club (London’s longest running black elderly project.)

Leigh Bourne and the team have done a magnificent job in putting together the February 2009 issue. Like many other readers we hope that Ping Yark becomes a blog so all its issues can be made permanently available online and discoverable though search engines like Google. How about it Leigh? (HINT HINT… Blog hosting service WordPress.com has the best interaction with other blogs)

Email received Monday evening…

“Hi guys

Thanks for the right up. Much appreciated. Its only a matter of time before PY becomes a blogg. It will happen sooner rather than later.

Thanks again

Leigh and crew”

Ping Yark Available For Download – First Issue Of The New Year!

In the U.K. there is an irreverent newsletter called Ping Yark – published by homesick Bajans for other homesick Bajans.

Leigh Bourne and a handful of others who refuse to surrender to Londontown publish Ping Yark quarterly in the U.K. … or to be more accurate…”more-less” quarterly.

Holding the newsletter in your hands, and turning each page, you will be rewarded with memories, current politics and many oh-so-secret secrets of the elites.

Is it true that the UK BLP organisation had a problem paying the bills recently? Did Deputy High Commissioner Donville Johnson embarrass himself when introducing the new High Commissioner to the UK?  Where is the next big Bajan party in London? Why didn’t Prime Minister Thompson dare to answer certain questions when he visited the UK on the recent (ahem) “CLICO” trade mission.

And is it true that the DLP members in the UK were “totally surprised” when their party won the January 2007 election?

Just make sure you a rum in de other hand… ’cause you sure will need it!
