Barbados Central Bank press release deceptive – What does ‘Weasel Words’ Worrell fear? What is the bank hiding?

That's Governor Worrell on the right... er, left!

That’s Governor Worrell on the right… er, left!

The Central Bank of Barbados just issued a new press release in an attempt to backpedal from Governor Worrell’s message last week that journalists from The Nation Newspaper are banned from future press conferences – but if anything the new weasel words press release makes things worse. As our friend Ian Bourne points out, the new press release does nothing to retract Worrell’s statement that Nation journalists are not welcome at bank media events.

Nope, that COWARDLY WEASEL-WORDED THUG Worrell still doesn’t want to face questions from Nation journalists.

Mr. Bourne goes much further too…

“The threats against Barbadian Journalism have only just started; it will get more strenuous as the DLP try to hold on for a third term and all of their beneficiaries seek to rally defences against real or imagined threats.”

Journalist Ian Bourne of The Bajan Reporter

Central Bank Sucks, Blows and Backpedals without a truthful admission and apology

No doubt the Central Bank’s new press release is in response to Bajans’ general disgust with Worrell’s and the bank’s thuggish attempt to muzzle a free press.

Here’s what Worrell originally said…

“Consequent upon the lack of professional integrity manifest in the Nation’s Front Page headline of Thursday, May 8, you should be aware that Nation/Sun staff will not be invited to any future Press conference or media event hosted by myself as Governor of the Central Bank,”

Central Bank Thug in Chief Dr. DeLisle Worrell in letter to all bank employees and The Nation Newspaper

Well, that sounds like a ban to us here at BFP. How about you dear readers?

Now Worrell is saying…

“The Central Bank of Barbados respects and embraces freedom of the press and the importance of the dissemination of timely and accurate information and as such has not banned the Nation Corporation.

The front page of the Sunday Sun of May 11, 2014, carried the headline “Cut Off”. The Bank assures media practitioners in Barbados as well as the public at large that it will continue to keep all media houses fully abreast of all developments on economic and other pertinent matters which fall under its purview, including the Nation Publishing Company, as is normal.

The Nation Publishing Company will receive all Press Releases and other communications issued by the Central Bank, and all media houses and the general public have free access to the Central Bank’s website, where all our statements, reports, data and speeches, and all other publications are posted…”

Weasel Words!

Readers, drunk or sober, will notice that this new press release does not retract Worrell’s original statement that Nation journalists would not be invited to media events. All they are invited to do is to visit the bank’s website.

When BFP took Worrell to the suck-well and called him the Head thug of the Central Bank of Barbados, many folks agreed.

Worrell’s latest weasel words reinforce his utter contempt for the important role that a free press plays in holding public officials accountable.

Unless and until Governor Worrell and the Central Bank invite Nation journalists to media events and answer questions from Nation journalists, ‘Weasel Words Worrell’ and the Central Bank have declared themselves to be enemies of democracy, transparency and accountability.

What is Weasel Words Worrell hiding? What does he fear from a free press?

Was there a brown Skin woman named Williams at the head of the CB ? when $1,000,000.00 walked out the front door of the BANK? What ever happen to that case and was the money ever recovered ?
Is that part of the money lost hidden in the same numbers or was that not added at all,

  3. In June, ForEx was at $800 million thus the call to increase reserves by $400 mil? In December, Credit Suisse loaned 300 mil, while CBB just secured 75 million USD so this makes 450 mil borrowed in the midst of 3 downgrades – the last report says ForEx is 1.1 Billion; isn’t it really 650 million? How can we resuscitate if our Moody or S&P standing is Junk or worse?

60 people to go home from CB were all these folks Political Appointees ?
If 60 go home would there be anyone left to run the Bank ? Question how many people do you need to run a Bank ? What was the total employed ?
No wonder we are in so much debt.

The response is obviously disingenuous. We soldier on.

“Did the PM have a word with him…perhaps?”
I would be shocked if he did because the PM never moves too swiftly to do or say anything about anything:)

Let us really face reality, Freedom of the Press exist only by name in Barbados. Over the years I repeatedly taken Certified Supreme Court Estate Document for paid Advertisement and have always been denied with various excuses. How can my uncle Fitzgerald Callender have died 18th day of May 1964 and successfully by Supreme Court Registration Documents made his last Will & Testament dated 10th day of December 1972. This matter was before the Supreme Court Monday 5th May 2014, why has the Press not taken it up, also why has the Press not taken up the issues of those London Road, Liverpool Road and Manchester Road Britton’s Hill Tenants purchasing stolen property through the Urban Development Commission expressed in my correspondence to Attorney General Braithwaithe? Where is that so call FREEDOM?

  10. Dean Bourne

I share your outrage at the action, but I don’t think you should be so personal and vindictive as to use terms such as “thug” and “‘weasel.”
