Environment Minister Lowe’s ground breaking ceremony nothing to do with reality

Let me get this straight: Bajans are supposed to believe that the Sanitation Service Authority is forging ahead with a billion dollar project list including a new office building ($32 million), waste to energy plant ($680 million), a leachate treatment plant ($42 million), landfill gas to energy plant ($10 million), solar power field ($120 million), wind power field ($24 million) and a mechanical workshop ($11 million).
All of this on borrowed money on the heads of our children and Lord knows how many other future generations.
This, at the same time that we don’t have money to replace/repair 84 buses that sit idle stripped for parts. We don’t have money to pave roads that are falling apart for ten years. No money to hire 100 ‘missing’ police officers. No money to fix a hundred water main leaks.
And we’re making 3,000 government workers redundant and taking the social unrest because there is nothing else to be done. Our tourism industry is shrinking when other countries are growing and building new resorts. Our hotels ‘feature’ a million empty beds a year, an average age approaching 30 years and I’d hate to hear the stats on the average age of the furnishing and mattresses.
No money for a sick, falling down hospital, no money to pay the hospital suppliers and employees on time – a big crisis every payday. Other government projects sit half finished, no work going on. Layoffs coming at the UWI too.
We had to withdraw our international bond issue because there aren’t any more fools left to ‘invest’ in a national retirement scheme that has as 80% of its ‘assets’ – the debt to itself. The government is so desperate for revenue that tax people are warning defaulters that they are coming to seize 10 year old vehicles and worker’s tools if they don’t pay up – and the people have nothing except their trucks and their tools.
And we’re supposed to seriously believe that the government is in ‘final negotiations with investors’ who are prepared to ‘loan’ a billion dollars to a country is on the verge of a currency devaluation that will shake its societal foundations to the core?
What a sick cruel joke.

New Home for SSA
A WIND, gas and solar energy programme earmarked for Vaucluse, St Thomas, could involve investments of nearly $1 billion.
Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe, who announced the energy projects yesterday, said Government was in “the final stages” of negotiations with a number of investors.
Plans for the area include a $680 million waste-to-energy plant; a leachate treatment plant costing about $31.9 million; a landfill gas-to-energy project to cost $9.4 million; a solar project costing $120; a wind-to-energy facility projected to cost $24 million; and an $11 million “ultra-modern” mechanical workshop.
Lowe calculated that eventually Barbados could be earning as much as $100 million annually from these projects.

Everyday I read both Barbados Comic publications, Nation News & Advocate, keeps me sane as I can see that all the crazies are politicians and the Bajans who believe the crap. If you go back and read these two comic strips for the last 10+ years you’ll see day after day some grandiose political announcement about some new scheme that’s going to make BILLION of $. If theses schemes had ever came to fruition then Barbados would not be BROKE.
Bajans are a naive laid back population that are easily swayed by political and religious rhetoric.
A friend who has a house on the Sandy Lane Estate called the BWA to reporting a burst pipe spilling thousands of gallons of water. Someone from the BWA visited but nothing happened. A week later he called again and there was another visit. He was told they could not fix the leak because they did not have a compressor available.
It’s only money – tongue- in-cheek – and so much easier to spend it when it’s not yours, nor have you done anything to make it. As a youth $100,000.00 seemed like a hell of a lot of money then cars cost almost that. Houses in multiples. Now hundreds of millions and even billions are spent so casually with little regard or appreciation, far less understanding it has to paid back. Do we really need all this crap or are our Ministers on a high flying EGO TRIP?
They are going ahead with the SSA headquarters. The funding will be provided by Bolt Solutions. The clue is in the name – Bolt stands for Build, Operate, Lease, Transfer and the company will most likely be an SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) formed for the sole purpose of executing the project.
Although the Government/SSA does not need to have the money to build the headquarters, it will need to be able to make the payments to Bolt Solutions, which like on the prison, will be a mix of funding costs, construction costs and operating costs.
The BWA Headquarters is a similar type of contract. By the way, look forward to a steep rise in your water bill when the building is occupied. With BWA’s current income, they cannot afford to make the payments on the building so water prices will have to go up.
The rumour on the streets is that the monthly repayment is in the region of $800,000 – 900,000. What effect is that going to have on your bill?

Notwithstanding all the essential services for which government has no money, photos of the SSA groundbreaking in the media show Minister Lowe (gold watch and gold ring) and other government officials sporting boutonnieres paid for by the taxpayers, sitting in the backhoe and using shiny silver shovels (paid for by the taxpayers) for photo-ops for the occasion.
Only peanuts of course, but a sign of what government officers apparently think is important, to put on a a happy face.
Meanwhile, COW, the Bolt guy, and the other private sector dignitaries, who will add to their wealth from the project, are dressed in work clothes at the official launch of the OUTHOUSE.
The present Government accusing the last administration of high pay back for DODDS ( where a lot of them should be ), and now they are doing the same things. Six of one half dozen of the other, I for one will never vote again!!!!!!!.

You should have seen Pornvale Inniss on the news last night ponficating because one of the stalwart of the DLP saying that the Government should cut the cabinet, in his words, he says all the members of the cabinet work so hard for the people of Barbados, I wonder why all of them have such pot bellies, and the rest of bajans seeing hard times. Barbados is to small a country to have so many ministers appointed to cabinet, plus who did not even win a seat in the last general election; and then being in government for now over six years and still blaming the last administration; this is really such a bad joke, and now want to add insult to injury.
