Still News: Rayside Construction lays off 60 workers as Barbados Government defaults millions owed for completed work

Now tell me the truth…

Almost a month ago Rayside laid off 60 workers, with the Barbados Government hiding the fact that Rayside is owed millions for completed government projects.

But Rayside is owned by CLICO, and CLICO went under but was bailed out by the Government to cover up the fraud pulled off by then Prime Minister David Thompson and his faithful leader, ah… what’s ‘is name? Oh yeah… Leroy. Leroy Parris.

It’s all too complex for ordinary folk like us, and doubly too complex for the local news media who haven’t touched the story since they published this little ditty. There were a few little pieces of roadwork handed out to Rayside but just enough to keep them alive, and not enough to call back more than one out of every three workers. Don’t you believe that stuff about $35 million dollars in new road projects… that’s a pipe dream that will take 10 years if ever.

But hey… what’s a couple a dozen million dollars between friends especially if government owes it and can’t pay? Not that newsworthy, ya know!

60 laid off

TUE, SEPTEMBER 24, 2013 – 12:06 AM

ANOTHER MAJOR CONSTRUCTION company is sending home staff.

Effective today, about 60 workers of Rayside Construction Ltd will be off the job.

The decision to lay off the weekly paid workers came yesterday following a two-hour meeting between officials from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU)  and the company’s management.

The workers, who are mainly involved in road construction, said their notices indicated that they would only be out of work for one week.

But some of them fear they could be on the breadline for much longer, having been told by management last Friday to collect their documents yesterday to take to the National Insurance Department for unemployment benefits.

They were also told they would receive a day’s pay for showing up yesterday.

The layoffs come three months after C.O. Williams Construction Company served similar notices on approximately 35 of its road construction staff.

In addition to a slowdown in business, the company said it was owed millions by Government.

From reading about the economy, IMF statements, poor annual performance in the tourism sector, the high tax and electricity rates, the inability of the government to collect from delinquent tax dodgers and even the government services or agencies do not pay into their government run pension funds. Now the reality starts to show and it is a hard one. The government has difficulty paying their bills as cited in the “Rayside” story and even paying the government employees either on time or at all. When you add all this up it’s obvious that the government is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Question is ” when will Leroy Parris end up in jail. He & his family living in luxury, & Mara Thompson & her family while Bajans can’t even go to the supermarket, to buy fooed for their families, have to turn to stealing. What a place that profess to have so many churches & christians, have some body like Stinkler. I think what he should do is sent his wife and daughters down Broad Street, then see how many more DLP technocrats will follow, he might attract lots of investments.

Did Thompson not forgive about a million dollars of VAT owed by Rayside when they got involved with Clico. Like giving cash to your friends.
