Another failing hotel seized by bailiffs, may close

Escape at the Gap owes millions

The reviews at TripAdvisor have been saying for months that the shopworn hotel would be closing, but they also tell many positive stories about the vacation experience at Escape at the Gap.

Typical are these two reviews. One said…

“Best Holiday we have ever had.

My Husband and I stayed here for a week in September 8th to 15th and it was the best holiday we have ever had. I can’t believe the earlier review from a couple who were there at the same time as us. Everything about the whole holiday was excellent. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you…”

“Firstly, this is a 3 star hotel-having said that, the service was better than in a lot of 5 star hotels we have stayed in. The staff are brilliant, all friendly and helpful – however, having seen how some holiday makers behave towards the staff, perhaps these are the people who got what they deserved!

The place is definitely in need of a face lift, however it is spotlessly clean, fresh towels and bed linen every day…”

Some folks love the beach and the location so much that they are willing to overlook the hotel’s faults – but staff cuts took their toll on the level of service and security…

“DISRUPTED A MEMBER OF STAFF ROBBING IN OUR ROOM

It is a shame that they haven’t spent any money on the accommodation in years as the space was good and although basic it could’ve been a much more comfortable stay had it have been modernised and the bathroom replaced.

While staying at Escape I walked into our room to find a member of staff wearing rubber gloves going through my bag with my wallet and cash in his hand. I was on my own, with my hubby and children down stairs over the road in the restaurant. I have never been so frightened in my life.

The hotel, the Virgin Rep and Virgin Holidays were very despondent of the matter, only when the police were called the hotel started to take the matter seriously. Even then we were just left to cope while the member of staff carried on working at the hotel beneath our window. He was arrested by the police and taken away…. that’s as much information as we were given.”

So it looks like that’s it for Escape at the Gap.

From the CBC News…

Bailiffs move in on local hotel

The Escape at the Gap hotel in St. Lawrence gap may be forced to close its doors now that bailiffs have been ordered to collect close to two million dollars in arrears.

According to the bailiff documents, the hotel reportedly owes just over 1.8 million dollars to Prospect Bay Resort Limited and Debdor Company Limited, up to October 31st.

Registered bailiff, George Alleyne spoke to CBC News on the matter and said that the arrears date back to 2008…

I will bet you that the only people that will suffer are the workers that will be left unemployed by this. There are too many loopholes in Barbados’ system of regulating that can be exploited by business owners.

It’s very sad to see hotel like this close. I hope there is a better plan for them.

dem should knock it down and re-vegetate land and use it as a coastal park!

If money is tight, do you pay the rent and tell staff: “Sorry, no pay. All the money went to pay the rent”?

SO THE HARBOR MASTER IS BEING SOLD . WHATS DISTURBING IS THAT ITS BEING SOLD TO THE TRINI MARKET .THE STAFF SO FAR HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY INFORMED AND SOME OF THEM ARE IN A STATE OF WORRY. MY QUESTION IS WHY IF THE OWNERS WANTED OUT,” MY GUESS IS THEY DID NOT WANT TO RIDE OUT THE ROUGH TIMES WE ARE EXPERIENCING” .FACT IS THE CRUISES HAVE SHRUNK IN TERMS OF NUMBERS ,THEY DID NOT PUT THE OFFER ON THE BAJAN MARKET FIRST .
HOWEVER THESE PPLS ONLY INTEREST IS ONLY TO COLLECT MONEY WHILE NOT OFFERING ANY ASSISTANCE TO THE SPONSORS OF THE CRUISES DURING TIMES LIKE THESE . SO WHEN TIMES GET HARD WHAT DO THEY DO .”SELL OUT” . DOESNT MATTER TO THEM THEY MADE THEIR MONEY BACK AGES AGO THE BOAT HAS BEEN IN OPERATION FOR AROUND 15 YEARS NOW SO NO DEBT THERE . WHY COULD THEY NOT PUT THE OFFER TO THE BAJAN MARKET OR OFFER THE STAFF THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THE BOAT SOME HOW. THESE PPL WORK LONG AND HARD TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THIS ENTITY OVER THE YEARS ITS NOT FAIR .

Just heard Escape at the Gap is opening again under new owners – fantastic news. This is great news as this is the best hotel we have have ever stayed in – beach is perfect. Would love to see the staff back as they made our holiday’s even better (including the Manager). Looking forward to hear of when it is opening. May never been the same fabulous EATG but location is great.
