Oistins Friday night: No Jamaican chicken allowed in the lavatory!

The tourists must wonder!

It’s all in good fun at Oistins on a Friday night and even the public washroom sign is in on it.

It’s all about Jamaican chicken, right? Somebody once told me that jerk chicken is about the rub and little else. That’s what they are talking about isn’t it?

🙂

See you there tonight, friends. Ah… I mean at Marcia’s Place, not the lavatory, ok?

  1. On my way home from Oistins came across a huge accident on Bay Street outside Shell Banyan’s, took a few pic’s – will develop and acquire full details, but had to race home, as Police tried to stop me from taking photos, LOL!

    Joe’s River lives, eh?

LOL, some police in Barbados are a law unto themselves. Someday, they will assault the wrong person and we will get like Jamaica. Too many confessions are had under duress and it seems Andrew Pilgrim is the only person with balls to say so. Met a young condescending female officer for a pig at Oistins when I was about to ask her if she heard the bulletin from the Abattior, she was saved by the Station Sargeant.

To be balance we have one of the best police forces in the Caribbean a few thugs should not spoil the whole bunch

There is an important bit of Bajan cultural heritage in that sign. “Fooping” is a Jacobean word (from the time of King James 1) that has dissapeared in England, but has survived the centuries in Barbados. Like “comfit”, which is a sweet.

I hope that no modern day prudes call for the sign to be taken down. It comes directly to the point and is humourous at the same time. And besides it provides examples of our linguistic cultural heritage. There were probably signs like this in London theatres in Shakespear’s time!

  4. Kalinago? Can you list the Jacobean source? I have never heard that explanation before! Not doubting, just curious…
