New threats against Barbados blogger Ian Bourne, Bajan Reporter blog

BLP says Bourne “taking this freedom of the press thing too far”

Most of the writers at Barbados Free Press choose to remain anonymous. Ian Bourne (photo above), Adrian Loveridge and other bloggers who have the courage to publish under their own names have paid the price over the years. Bourne and Loveridge experienced death threats and worse because they put their names to their words. Loveridge was fired from a couple of positions and had his weekly newspaper column killed by the Minister of Tourism because he was critical of the government, if ever so gentle.

After reading of new threats to Ian Bourne, we staff at BFP will continue to remain anonymous, thank you very much.

  1. I didn’t lose my Gov’t job, I resigned from SSA because of a Minister (who is now recovering from pulmonary embolism of the lungs), BIG difference, sigh! But yes, the threats actually started when I FB-Shared the Owen/Mia piece you did with the so-called leaked Documents… It really ruffled feathers with the picture you created, and so the tactic was to divert and claim that **I** made the Vlad the Impaler cartoon rather than look at the deeper issues involving $75,000…

    Hi Ian,

Okay, Clive put this up and I’ll ask him to change the reference to you losing your job. Death threats and threats against your home/pets are correct though, yes?

Ian Bourne? I salute you my brother. You are a brave soul when you know how ruthless and nefarious are some members of the elite group. Keep up the good work but not at the expense of your life. Be careful dude.

    Hi Ian,
Remember the meeting at the USA Embassy, where we met with a lady from the USA State Department ….. and you mentioned your online newspaper? What if the threats you are reporting are read and highlighted by persons there? What message would it be sending about Barbados and freedom of speech?

(Do you realise that having that lady’s email address could see you sending this report and possibly causing a great backlash to the Opposition? )

  14. LOL

I doubt anyone seriously thinks a buffoon like Ian would be worth killing lol.
    Probably just mischievous kids.

    Hello LOL,

Your comment is coming up to the line, so watch it.

You forget alot of things ’bout this place.

As to who the threats come from, Dr. Duguid confirmed that some of the threats came from a computer in the Parliament building. We also know that the BLP blog linked to death threats against Adrian Loveridge until we and other blogs forced them to remove it. The Royal Barbados Police Force refused to investigate threats against Adrian and his wife, and refused to investigate an arson at his business. Adrian published several articles here and included copies of his correspondence to the PM and Commissioner of Police Dottin. There were also a great many threats in the Kingsland case that the police refused to investigate.

If you wish more, you should look at Reudon Eversley’s article about journalists being threatened under the BLP government, sometimes directly by Owen Arthur himself. You must have forgotten about the shooting during the election at a candidate’s home and the police saying it was a “random” act including that someone “randomly” threw human waste at the same candidate’s business on the same day.

You forget alot of things ’bout hey.

  16. BFP

Clive here. I changed the article to make it more accurate re Ian’s comments.

Heading for bed. Have to up early.

    Alone again. (sigh)

BFP and ian Bourne need to get a grip. You lot have such a misplaced sense of self importance. The average Barbadian is unaware of you and couldn’t care less about what happens to you.

  18. Not your average Bajan

It is not the average Barbadian who is threatening BFP, Bajan Reporter, Loveridge, Reudon Eversley and free speech in general.

No wonder we can’t seem to have Integrity legislation from both political parties. No information act either.

Mr. “I am Important”, You are right on target with your comments re:IAN. Paranoic behaviour and an elevated sense of importance go hand-in-hand.
I would never deny him his constitutional right, but it appears to me that Mr. Bourne has taken on the function of an apostle and political hachet-man for the Mia faction.

Also, he is no better than megastar Rihanna, whom he always criticizes as being lascivious and outrageous. But just like Rihanna, he will say and do the most outrageous to grab limelight ….. can’t blame him though … he apparently inherited that bombastic, argumentative, fretful, waspish behaviour from his dad Desmond!

But thank God, there is hope Ian …. YOU CAN BREAK THE CYCLE!

  21. LOL

    Hi BFP,
I notice you have not mentioned the “Doc Glock” Estwick incident in Parliament in your rush to demonise the BLP.
As usual your partisan slip is showing.

Don’t be scared. Hang in there!

  23. mac

    @Not your average Bajan

Maybe they are same as “not Bajan people” that burnt down the shop in Tudor Street.

  24. @”Truthman Burton” – If between Owen and Mia in the BLP I made a choice and espouse such is that not my democratic right? However, I also carry notices from the ruling DLP so is this a sign of balance or an inability to decide on Political stance? You imply paranoia, this mental condition is where a threat is more often unfounded, since I kept a copy of the conversation and can publish if needed, then by having evidence of the threat therefore the paranoia you tout is non-existent.

Your putrid and flaccid effort to denigrate my contention (which I deliberately put in block capitals in the original entry, as I am not Kanye West, but I consider that threat significant) indicates which part of the ballpark you are either pitching or batting from? I did not make the entry a Headline item on my site, so it is intriguing how many are closely observing my content & comments?

My real desire is if Barbados had a viable Third Political Alternative, but those people and such a new entity would have to endure far more than what I am going through now, so I do not envy that task should it come to fruition…

Ian Bourne, what type of journalist writes such poor English?

  26. The kind who writes how they feel, you are not forced to read this, you know? For you – it’s bad English; for me – I express myself and damn all torpedoes.

  27. The original points, despite all diversions, are the following;-

    1) Who leaked the BLP fiscal report in the first place and WHY? Who benefits, was it a diversion (as is harping on the Illustration or my English {sic})?

    2) Why threaten anyone for expressing their political views in a peaceful manner?

Hi Ian, please re-read my first submission. Quote : ” I would never deny him his constitutional right.” I fully respect your democratic right to choose and change your political alliances, but I believe it is also my prerogative to question and comment on my perception of your motives, as it is similarly your right to question mine.

Here is something that I observed some years ago, that I have not spoken a lot about, and I have not forgotten.

I was attending a BLP political mass meeting in Oistins, held to support all of the candidates in the Christ Church constituencies. At one point during the meeting, an overly-exuberant, and clearly inebriated member of the audience started to heckle Adrian Loveridge who was attending the meeting with his wife. I believe Adrian was there primarily because the late Sir Harold St.John, the “Baron” of Oistins, was expected to make a special statement on the Tourist Industry, and to, with promised evidence, refute some statement made by Loveridge, who at the time had rather intense involvement in the political campaign, always speaking in favour of the DLP.

I was standing very near to the unfolding incident, so I was intimately aware of what happened. One BLP supporter intervened and chided the heckler for his inappropriate behaviour towards Mr. Loveridge, and the thing soon dissipated. However, shortly afterward, Mr. Loveridge calmly left the meeting with his wife. They passed immediately in front of me, crossed the road, and walked going East, presumably to their motor vehicle. I watched them with some interest as they disappeared in the distance.

The next morning, to my amazement and horror, I read in The Nation’s CAMPAIGN EXPRESS, a front page article by EMMANUEL JOSEPH stating that Mr.Loveridge and his wife had been attacked and chased out of a BLP meeting! Now … I knew that report was a complete fabrication, because I witnessed the whole incident myself, and at no time were the Loveridges under any threat, or in any danger. As a matter of fact, there was light-hearted laughter on all sides, and there was never any discomfort exhibited by either Loveridge or his wife.

I do not know if JOSEPH would recall, but I sought him out that day with a view to speaking to him on his erroneous report. I eventually spoke to him at his insurance office, and when I brought my account to his attention, he ushered me away with the comment that he had no time to discuss it now!

I then obtained the telephone number of Peach and Quiet, and called Mr. Loveridge himself. I informed him about the report in the Campaign EXPRESS, and urged him to make a public statement correcting Joseph’s erroneous report. Mr. Loveridge though courteous, was non-committal about doing anything, although he seemed to agree with my account of what had happened. I pursued the matter no more, because I did not have the time, but it is important to note that in charged political atmospheres, certain information [for whatever reason} is often put out in the public domain, that is totally erroneous and misleading.

As far as Reudon Eversley is concerned, isn’t where Eversley today a good indication of what his whole political motivation has been? People like him with impunity attack the integrity of others, and when they receive a stinging defensive rebuke, they cry for momma, and also resort to exaggerations and increased ad hominen tirades. The fruit of Eversley’s activities can be seen today at tax-payer supported CBC DLP TV PINE RADIO, where he functions as a destructive political operative, in concert with the man at the “HELLUM,” LEROY PARRIS, then PETER WICKUM, and other minions like loose cannon JOHN LOVELL. Their main job is to abuse and refuse fair and balanced media coverage to the OPPOSITION, the Government in waiting of this country. IT is noteworthy that the same EMMANUEL JOSEPH of LOVERIDGE FAME, was recently on CBC DLP TV with PETER WICKUM , stating emphatically that ” The BLP ran a NASTY campaign in the St.John By-Election” You could imagine that? With no BLP representative on the discussion panel?

BFP, you state that : “You forget a lot of things ’bout hey.” but I assure you BFP, Nasty lies and ennuendo are not easily forgotten.

  30. Adrian Loveridge

    Truthman,

Just to clarify what actually happened.
It was the first (and last) political meeting that I have ever attended in my life. I went solely to hear the former Prime Minister (Owen Arthur) speak about what was heralded as ‘the truth behind GEMS’.
The former Prime Minister publicly named myself, the late Peter Morgan Tony Arthur stating if these three people were in charge of tourism it would be a disaster (or a word to that effect).
At that stage some very vocal BLP supporters headed towards us and started shouting ‘there he is, get him, get him!’ One lady especially started waiving her fist.
My wife felt very threatened and I felt intimidated. It was in fact Adrian Donovan who came to our rescue and ensured we could leave the meeting without further harrasment.
I am sure that Mr. Donovan’s sense of truth and fairness would support our version.

Good Morning Mr.Loveridge. I see you still remember. My version of the events that night were based on a close up, front seat vantage point. Your references to “threatened” and “intimidation” surprise me, because there was much laughter, and I DID see you smiling and gigling.

At no time did I get a sense that you were about to be attacked by a mob as your comments ” there he is , get him, get him” imply. With all due respect sir, I did not hear that spoken threat, and I fully recall that there was only ONE slightly drunken man gesturing at you. He wasn’t even up in your face ….. he was not close to you at all! Almost every political meeting in Barbados features its token drunken man, and on almost every ocassion, they are a nuisance rather than a threat.

My problem with JOSEPH’s report was that he gave the impression [WRONG]to the reading public, that Adrian Loveridge, the brave white man, dared to appear at a BLP MEETING after criticising the BLP government, and was attacked by a BLP MOB!!

I can confirm your statement that you were able to leave the meeting without harassment, because as I said, you comfortably walked right pass me with your wife, without escort , without hindrance, and I did watch you ALL the way as you left. As a matter of fact, your departure was so uneventful, that I believe I was the only one who seemed interested. All other eyes were on the platform speaker.

  32. k

Ian Bourne STFU please. Same to your paw. Twin humbugs.

  33. Nope, knowing I irk you makes my day – go sit on your thumb and do twirls, LOL!

  34. @k – Nah? You upset? Cool! Irritated? Super!

  35. Adrian Loveridge

    Truthman Burton.

I have absolutely no political agenda, but after your comments I asked my wife about that evening to ensure my recollection was accurate.
She confirmed that she felt intimidated and threatened and that is enough for me. As I said, I believe Adrian Donovan, despite any political bias he may have, could confirm exactly what happened.
Threats and intimidation were the hallmark and legacy of the Owen Arthur administration. Death and rape threats traced to a computer
within a restricted area of Parliament and the FACT that the Royal Barbados Police Force never properly investigated these reported
incidents is a damming indictment on his administration.

  36. Truthman Burton

Adrian, you can fool those bound by simplemindedness, given to unperceptivity, but I know what I saw and heard. Your boasts of “no political agenda” are as vacant as your brainless or muddleheaded comments about the last administration being one of threats and intimidation. And if you are basing that conclusion on happenings like the innocuous Oistins event, then I am truly sorry for you Adrian.

I commiserate with you over the fact that despite becoming the Chief Spokesperson for the DEMS on Tourism matters, you did not achieve your goal of becoming the new Minister of Tourism. I am happy however, that you have been given the opportunity to devote full time to your “Peach and Quiet” hotel business. You are doing a marvellous job there, and I know, because my family and I have been a recipient of the excellent services provided there.

I think I have made my point about this whole matter, so I won’t back. You can have the last word!

Tell the world what you think about this!
