Attention Barbados Police: Please keep looking for the madman throwing stones!

Madman… or setting up a Robbery?

Dear Barbados Free Press,

Forwarding this for your readers’ information, this also happened to a vendor driving to Brighton market a few weeks ago, 5am, dark, man jumped out of a cane field & threw a rock at her car. She was very frightened as driving alone, & reported it to the police.

signed: Politically Tired (very!)

(Editor’s comment: Thanks, Politically Tired. If you Google “threw rock at car” you’ll find that this happens all over the world AND that it is incredibly dangerous. Recently a 17 year-old girl in the USA was killed by a rock thrown at a car. We hope our police give this crime the priority it deserves.)

Now back to the letter from Politically Tired…

Dear All,

Last night 18 October 2010 around 11.30 pm my wife and I were returning home. We had just left the Norman Niles roundabout heading East to the Salters junction, when a man stood up from the side of the road and hurled a huge stone at our vehicle.

For those of you familiar with that road, the incident occurred before you get to the bus stop on the left side of the road.
It was almost immediately after leaving the roundabout.

The noise of the impact was akin to the same noise heard when metal compacts in a car accident. That will give you some idea of how hard he threw the stone.

Fortunately, the stone struck the door and only the vehicle was damaged.

My wife who was on that side was thankfully not harmed.  We called the police and went on to district B police station to report the crime.

The police admitted that they had had reports of similar incidents.

District A telephoned me later that tonight to say they had investigated the area and did not find the individual but would continue to investigate.

I don’t know what the individual’s intentions were but my first instinct was to stop and confront this man. In fact I am sure you all can imagine what I would have really have loved to have done to him but my wife thought it best to continue on because you don’t know how many of them there could be and what kind of armaments they have. Stopping to confront him might have been what he wanted. He may have been just a drunk or drugged out or he may have been part of some gang. You just don’t know.

I send this email as a public service. Please advise your friends and family or whoever as this, according to the police, is not an isolated incident.

My advice is to keep on moving and don’t stop, for anything.

My car can take a big rock hit but can he take a hit from my car?

It does seem as though Barbadians are trying very hard to emulate other West Indians in many ways. Criminal acvtivities seem to front and foremost . I would hope the those that are in position to to enforce the law, would do so with such robust actions , that those that think of committing crimes would think twice about the consequences that they’ll face ,and as a result be deterred.
I have been told by quite a few returnig Canadian visitors to Barbados that they have seen a very dramatic (“sorry” ) change in crime related activities in Barbados and as a result they couldn’t enjoy the Island tours as the have done in the the past. That to me is a sad reflection on my Barbados.

  4. Crazy George!

    A friend in the know
sent me this, which I find worthy of inclusion in this discussion……..

This sounds like a “street person”
known to the District A Police
    as “Crazy George”
who hit Jean’s car with a big piece of wood
smashing the passenger window and damaging the door!

He also attacked another car driven by Mr. Stoute’s daughter
    -a few minutes after Jean.

This happened in the same general area.
This guy travels along that highway.
A few minutes earlier he had lightly struck Yvonne M’s car, without doing any damage, near the Warrens roundabout.
This was sometime late last year.

Jean reported it at District A
and the Police picked him up in a few minutes:
they are well aware of who he is, as he is notorious in the area for crazy actions!
He was brought in to Dist A and Jean identified him!

The joke is.. the magistrate talked a lot of crap about “cars are not made as they used to be”
-as if that had anything to do with the matter.
He sent Crazy George for a mental report.

Not long after, he was also convicted of going in to Warrens polyclinic and attacking a doctor
and maybe he got a few weeks in jail for that!

He is a danger to motorists in that area
but nothing seems to be done..

The guy needs locking up and treated. What are the maximum penalties for what he has done?

  6. 198

    Probably Bds. $24.

    Don’t laugh.

  7. The stories keep pouring in!

    Cut and Pasted,
direct from a response to my earlier email ……………………

I can add that some weeks ago,
one of my work mates was travelling on the main road in Upton head towards BET,
when something came hurtling through the car window, shattering the glass!

It was relatively early, I do not think it was past 9 p.m.
She too would have stopped, but was impressed in spirit to keep driving!
She went to the gas station, and called police and her husband.

They found a hard, green breadfruit in the car,
this is what had been used as a missile.
No it could not fall and fly sideways,
    this was deliberate!

The lady then had to go to Sandy Crest medical centre
to get the shards of glass picked out of her face and arms.
One wonders what the outcome would have been if she had stopped !!!
The police came and looked around and found nothing at the time.

What are the Police going to find? Fingerprints on the stone or breadfruit !!!

  9. Beefcake

What are the Police going to find? The suspect standing by waiting to see what happens next?

Regretfully when the police send out a presence to investigate and fulfill their “to assure” mandate, they are clearly visible (and sometimes audible) so the people can disappear easily into the shadows, over fences, and cross country.

Policing in society is required to be reactive and can’t deal with most issues unless a person is caught in the act or with solid evidence.

It is sad to say, but there might be a time when a proactive stance is needed by the police to intercept up and detain loiterers or people with suspicious behavior. Instead of driving about in fancy SUVs, units need to be mobilized on foot keeping to the shadows and brush themselves.

The criminal element is not afraid; they laugh at the system. Civil society is being put in fear.

  10. Another Victim

About six weeks ago I believe it must be the same mad man that threw a large stone at my son’s car. This happened about 6.45am on a Saturday. He was on his way home from work .It happened around the Norman Niles Roundabout. He did not stop. He called the police to notify them. When he arrived home and had a look at the car the stone had dented the roof and taken the paint off. I called the police as well and asked them what can be done to solve this problem. I received a few calls from friends letting me know that he had struct some other cars as well. My son travels this route every day to work. For a mother this is sure a stressful feeling. I also travel this route everyday. I do see the police at the bell waiting to report you for speeding. He needs to be found and punished.

  11. Slap Happy

Chill! I hate it when people say that.

I guess this fellow will join the ranks of the “heart man” and the fellow who used to punch holes in people’s houses. I w0nder whatever happened to those fellows.

Call in the CSIs. Find the rocks. Follow the evidence.

On a serious note, nobody deserves to be treated like to that. To be startled like that with the possibility of injury or death; not funny at all.

  12. de hood

I have heard that there are ways of dealing with scum like this if the authorities can not or refuse to deal with them appropriately and in a timely fashion. Maybe we need to see some vigilante action on our roads to deal with this sort of behaviour.

  13. BFP

    Attention Mr. de hood,

IF you mean citizens chasing down, arresting and holding this man for the police when they see him throwing rocks at cars – with no violence and according to the rule of law – that is acceptable.

IF you mean vigilante violence, that is unacceptable and you are cautioned that we do not allow calls for violence on BFP.

    Thank you for your participation.

  14. de hood

    @ BFP

    Sir!
Did I ever mention anything about “violence”? I am a man of very peaceful means but we do have a God-given and statutory right to defend ourselves, our families and our property, don’t we? At least it was so last time I checked. Remember, a man will do what a man has to do!
