In my opinion, the reason why Barbados sells it’s assets to foreigners is because deep down in their psyche, they are still looking for acceptance.
I live in London and visit Barbados regularly, so I am a little detached from the day-to-day experiences of the island.
Looking in at the land of my birth, I see people who have not quite understood that they should embrace their your own people who’ve live abroad and come home to rest instead of alienating them, as is what happens in Barbados.
It happens so often that many Bajans are prepared to disrespect their own people who’ve travelled back to the island, but are prepared to smile and ‘skin their teet’ and behave like latter day slaves and march to the beat of the foreigners Dollar, Pound or Euro bill.
If we Bajans dance to the beat of the foreigner’s currency, then proceed to sell all our assets to them then we cannot be saved by abolition or emancipation. We would be giving away what Bussa and our ancestors hung from trees for; what our people worked hard in the boiling hot sun for.
Bajans must not sell to the highest bidder anymore , because we will never become the highest bidder, we do not control the markets or the currencies. We will always come off second best in the bidding stakes.
We are condemning ourselves to a 166 square mile plantation, but this time we wont get it back.
It hurts me to see some beautiful houses and property on the island and the only interest that some Bajans have in that property is when the grass needs cutting or the wall or fence need painting.
That does not happen in many Caribbean Islands where there is an Alien Land Act, as in Trinidad andTobago.
Here in England, we Bajans are sometimes the laughing stock of the Caribbean. We keep getting told and asked by our fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters, “Why are you Bajans selling off all your country to the foreigners?
The disgusting thing is that we never have an answer. Yet Barbados is supposed to be one of, if not the best educated country in the region.
Bajans must remember that the foreign tourists are only there for the fun. But when we Barbadians arrive back from the UK, USA , Canada or wherever we now live, treat us well because we are ‘Coming Home’.
We don’t stop coming because the pound or dollar or Euro is having problems, or because there is a recession on or because there is a new tourism destination just opened. The non-Bajan tourists who come there for the ‘fun’ , would drop Barbados like a hot potato if it is more economically viable to go somewhere else.
We come there to spend our hard-earned money to support our people, because that is our home and we come home.
Finally the politicians need to pass legislation to safeguard what land we have left for our own people and not give it away to outsiders.
Pass an ‘act of parliament’ to prohibit the sale of land to anyone who have not had a grandparent or direct family connection with the island.
Grow-up and be wise Barbados.
Is this radio station going to be sensored like all the others in Barbados? You know, where whichever ruling party is in controls what is broadcast!
