Island awaits news on further medical tests
TODAY, Sunday, May 23, 2010, has been declared a national day of prayer for our ailing Prime Minister David Thompson. The call for prayer was initiated by eucharistic minister Hilford Murrell and has been embraced by congregations all over Barbados.
Our Prime Minister appeared thinner than we last saw him, but was in good spirit last Friday when he and his doctor revealed his medical troubles during a press conference. His condition sounds serious though. The PM has been absent for a few weeks and will be absent for a few more while having some tests done in New York for stomach pains.
We see news articles about the PM’s condition from all over and as far away as China and India.
Barbados Free Press joins in prayers for Prime Minister Thompson and his family. We hope his medical troubles turn out to be nothing too serious and that he will be well soon.

My prayers are for the PM and his family, God Bless.
I will modify a comment made under another posts …
STRESS, it can manifest itself in so many ways, and it is well known for producing symptoms that are hard to diagnose – sound familiar from what we heard in the press release?
Of course, on a more serious note, stress has been linked very strongly to cancer especially when the immune system (which also subject to stress too) is under attack – i.e. most of the time when you are run down and get the flu, its your body saying, ‘stop, rest’ and a lot of us don’t and sometimes we pay the price.
So in addition to all the other variety of other conditions – anxiety/panic attacks, acid reflux, hiatus hernia, ulcers, hypertension and irregular heart rhythm, to name a few – it has been known to take doctors several tests to eliminate the major potential issues before realising that its just a stress/anxiety issue.
In the meantime, the patient with the stress/anxiety related issues is experiencing ‘real’ symptoms, scared they may have cancer or heart problems or whatever, and sometimes others around them think that they are just imagining things because the doctors can’t find anything really wrong. Its a vicious circle and feeds on itself.
Anyway, I wish him well – I know what stress can do and how strange the symptoms can be, it ain’t nice! Believe me.
Here is wishing him well and praying that at the end of the day it turns out to be nothing serious.
May he find the courage and strength in God to face his trials, I too has been diagnose with cancer,so far I am surviving since 1990 after given 6 months to live, I change diet and add more exercise,Today I ran 5 km, I thank God everyday I can make it. I also gave up hard work.Thanking God again
I too pray that he makes a speedy and full recovery and that his wife, children and relatives find peace in this trying time.
As a Senior Adviser in the Cabinet of the official opposition at the City of Montreal, I know what stress this arena can bring. I hope that the Prime Minister will take all the time he needs to repair his system and reinforce his ability to continue for many years to come.
Bon courage,

Carrying the weight of one’s people on one’s shoulders, is an enormous task. Often times, we vilify our political leaders, and cause great emotional harm to them and their families. As a Barbadian expatriate, I’m thankful to god that my little Island nation, has the immense talent of David Thompson, his cabinet and the opposition led by Mia Mottley. I hope that god will place a hedge of protection around David, his wife and their children. David is bright, he cares for Barbados and Barbadians, our country needs his leadership, for many more years to come.
Can you imagine Dennis Kellman or David Estwick as PM? God please deliver us from evil and gave David another chance at life, living and leadership.

I just hear what appears to be a rumour at this time but if true its the worst case scenario for this thread.
BFP are your eyes and ears open, rumours flying ’round the island …
Hmm, everyone must be at the SOL rally
@David G. Brooks
There are rumors in the blogsphere but in the fullness of time you will know the facts.
Keep praying for the PM.
Hi David,
We’ve been hearing a variety of rumours from before the PM’s announcement just like everyone. As with everything in life: hope and pray for the best, but always do what you can to prepare for the worst.
To Mrs Thompson and Family
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of need keep God first he will do whats right stay strong.

Get better soon, PM!
There is still a lot of work ahead of you, and we need you so very much. Best wishes as you fight this illness. Our thoughts are with you and your family, and we are sending an express delivery of best wishes for your speedy recovery.
From all of your friends in Houston, Texas!
Our God is Jehovah Rapha at this time God is calling on you to put your whole trust in Him. He faithful and touch by the feelings of our infirmities.
The lord will allow “David” the shepherd boy to conquer the “Sickness Goliath.” Barbados has good stewards of the people’s business. Deputy Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, is hand picked by Barbados’ shepherd David Thompson, and is a stellar thinker, and an intellectual giant. Please do not speak words that hurt our leaders, or Barbadians during this trying time. There is a saying, “It is better to be thought of as a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.” Words are powerful, and we must now, hold on to god’s unyielding hands. Most contributors to this blog are good bajans, and believers in the powers of the supreme architect of this universe, god. But there are those who calculate only mischief, and the seeds of doubt. It is to you that I offer the hope that you will unite on the side of the righteous.
Hi Calley,
You’re right. It is so irresponsible and unpatriotic of anyone to question anything done or not done by our government or our elected representatives during this trying time.
Perhaps in another twenty or thirty years Barbados will be ready for integrity legislation, freedom of information laws, conflict of interest standards and transparent campaign financing. Perhaps in twenty or thirty years the time will be correct to point out that our west coast beaches are disappearing in large measure due to groynes approved by the government.
Please forgive us for even thinking of mentioning anything like that. We’ll shut down tomorrow!
BFP,
Sarcasm will get you everywhere. I am not suggesting, even for a minute that the essence of what you are saying is wrong, the difference between the two of us lies simply this way, I can disagree, without being disagreeable. Discourse between intelligent folks should be civil, and if you feel the need to shout, go right ahead. Bear in mind dear friend, “A person convinced against their will, is of the same opinion still.”
Barbados does have issues, that were there before the Thompson administration, and will be there after the present administration. Let me not pretend to lecture you dear friend, but for the sake of political indulgence, how do you BFP plan to solve some of Barbados’ issues? The order of business, and government begins at home, in ones living room. I am not naive enough to believe that anyone on the planet earth, can love me or my family, more than we love ourselves. Hence, I endeavor to tell my children to first practice good moral judgement, and employ good fiscal and social common sense, in their undertakings. BFP, government is not the solution to all of our problems. “We are the captains of our ships, the masters of our destinies.” I eagerly await your interaction, relative to making B’dos a better place, for all. Thanks for sharing your opinion with me.
Hello .8
I (Robert) understand where you are coming from, but we at BFP reached the conclusion on a beach in late 2005 that we were tired of “civilized” discourse with the political elites that always results in polite dismissal and non-attention from those in power who continue to do as they please with our money… while using our money to maintain their power.
They control the news media through the carrot of government advertising and the stick of unlimited funds for pursuing claims against any news reporter who merely asks uncomfortable questions – like where a government Minister obtained such wealth on a public salary or how it is that a government minister lives on land that his own government expropriated for “public housing”.
At BFP we “solve” the problems of our society by exposing them to light. If that means calling someone a damned liar because that’s what they did – then we do it. If we state that (for instance) the Thompson government will never charge a member of the BLP with corruption or fraud and all the anger is phony blustering for the public – it is because that’s how we see it. The fact that we were correct is really what upsets the political elites along with the fact that so far they haven’t been able to stop BFP from publishing these inconvenient truths and questions. And if we occasionally put up a photoshop creation with the Chief Justice wearing a dress or cow dung flowing from the mouth of former Attorney General Dale Marshall, well… it definitely got their attention didn’t it?
The acting Prime Minister recently stated (as before) that the DLP government will soon be introducing some type of Integrity legislation. We’ll not hold our breath, but we will point out that the terms “integrity legislation” and “Freedom of Information” weren’t even in the political lexicon prior to Barbados Free Press.
It is not hyperbole to observe that the blogs and the people’s newly found freedom on the internet may have been the tipping factor in the last election that pushed the BLP from power. Also, when Thompson and the DLP made their last minute cut and paste promise to pass Integrity Legislation and Freedom of Information, that was definitely in direct response to the Barbados blogosphere.
As the next election approaches the political elites will be expecting Bajans to choose between the two rotten fish that are traditionally offered.
Trust us on this… we at BFP and other citizens have some plans in the works…
During the next election thousands and thousands of voters will say “no thanks” to the rotten fish political parties. “We’re looking for something fresh…”
Look all you want dear friend. Thirty minutes in the life of a politician can be an eternity. The masses are “Fickle minded,” and apathetic for the most part. You my friend may be well intentioned, but most of the people reading and contributing on this blog, lack the intestinal fortitude to stand up for themselves, and to speak truth to power. “Our right lies in might, and power is the only thing that satisfies humans.” Always remember dear friend, that “Right is an abstact thought, that proves nothing.” We the enslaved masses of this global theatrical circus, are but “Pawns in the game.” For example in the USA, ten percent of the population, controls ninety percent of the wealth. Poor people continually pay the most for the least, the rich the least for the most. To move our people beyond the self induced stupor that has invaded their minds, we must teach them to unshackle themselves, from the misery of “Want” as oppose to “Need.” In a consumeristic society, where every house has two cars, four computers, three 60″ flat screen televisions, and success is attached to ones postal code, do you think these neophytes will hunker down to philosophical change? Look around you my friend, Barbados our island home, has started down the path to massive monetary devaluation, only a matter of time, and just look at the massive exodus of industries from our island home. Bajans are suffering the same fate, as their global neighbors, technological development, coupled with moral and social decay. Today most young Barbadians are primarily interested in the Crop over Festival in lieu of issues centered around family values. Although I am prepared to concede to you, that Barbados is not as bad as Trininidad or Jamaica yet, we are on a catastrophic collision course to social despotism. I don’t want to be shakespearean here, but look around at the vast numbers of young men doing nothing, but hanging out and getting in trouble with the law. My friend the “First order of government, is the individual family unit.” Understand this BFP, we are the “Products of our expectations.”
Hi .8
We believe that the start of solutions to many of our problems will come when Barbados political elites are forced to adopt Integrity, Transparency and Accountability Legislation (ITAL).
Hundreds of millions of our tax dollars – maybe more – have been stolen and misspent because our elected representatives have no controls, few rules and fear no public scrutiny.
We will not stop our call for ITAL. We will continue to shame and name the political elites who promised ITAL and lied.
i believe that our very own RE-RE has made quite a lot of money and i am happy for her so why waste our tax payers money buying her land at apes hill when these funds could have been used to help some of our seniors who have toiled for so little pay back in their youth and have made such a large contribution to this land,it would be nice to see her making a contribution to some of our less fortunate children who live in the various children homes around the island seeing that so many young people look up to her as a role model
The Hon.David Thompson we prayer for you and your family , hope you get well soon.
Prime Minister Thompson or his government don’t care about people like me. Can’t afford housing, just the bare necessities. If I was terminal tomorrow, they wouldn’t waste a thought on my demise or the children I leave behind. No sorrow for my loved ones. When I get old they will just drug me ’til my mind and body gives up. No places made for me after I contribute to this nation with years of hard work. No laws to take care of the old.
I am not as charitable a many Barbadians. I don’t care about his illness or the consequences for him. In life you don’t get to choose how the story ends or how it begins. All these calls to pray for the Prime Minister are just detracting from the issues at hand that affect me and mine.
What I would cry about is who takes over from him if he goes. None seem to be too competent at all. They should take their fingers out of their as**es and run the government.
