Murdered Canadian Tourist Terry Schwarzfeld Called “White Trash” – Senior Advisor to Barbados Prime Minister Publishes Articles on Same Racist Website!

schwarzfeld-murder-barbados

Why Does Prime Minister Thompson’s most senior advisor publish articles at a website that calls Terry Schwarzfeld “White Trash”?

Early this year, readers from Barbados Free Press voted to remove the sidebar links to the Barbados Underground blog because that blog had become a racist hotbed – and also because they published reader comments containing threats of violence against named individuals. Some other Barbados blogs also removed their links to Barbados Underground for the same reason.

Barbados Underground’s editor (David) allows and facilitates the most vile racist discussions and articles – even to the point of allowing posts that call murdered Canadian tourist Terry Schwarzfeld “White trash”. Other posts call for blacks to remain racially pure and to not have children with other races or lighter skinned persons of African heritage. Some posts encourage violence against whites, Chinese, Guyanese of Indian descent, and other non-Blacks – including mixed-race Bajans whose skin is not sufficiently dark enough for Barbados Underground’s commenters.

A visit to Barbados Underground will show that this disgusting racist dialogue is not restricted to readers’ comments, but actually appears in some of their published articles. For instance, a recently published article called The Fear of The Growing Ethnic Factor, Real or Imagined? stated “Bajans must understand that Hindu immigrants, with their high fertility rates, and their dislike of miscegenation with the Negro, have already destroyed the social cohesion of two Caribbean territories–Guyana and Trinidad. Now they are invading Barbados.”

All of which makes us wonder why Hartley Henry, who is Prime Minister David Thompson’s most senior advisor, continues to publish articles at Barbados Underground. It’s not as if Mr. Henry is unfamilar with the racist dialogue or the threats of violence that are published at Barbados Underground as these subjects have been major topics of discussion for the past year. Some of the racist comments have even appeared in response to Mr. Henry’s articles and in articles about him and other DLP insiders.

Barbados Underground Racist

Two days ago, Hartley Henry published an article exclusively at Barbados Underground that was the fulfillment of earlier threats he made to ruin an editor of the Nation News (photo above). We covered that story and the content of Henry’s article on Barbados Underground in two of our earlier posts. (See BFP’s articles Senior Advisor To Prime Minister David Thompson Follows Through With Threats Against Barbados Journalist and Barbados Newspaper Editor Threatened by Senior Advisor to Prime Minister David Thompson)

It is not our intent to rehash that story here.

We simply desire an answer as to why Mr. Hartley Henry – who very much represents the Barbados government and Prime Minister David Thompson – would publish exclusive political articles on a website that condones, facilitates and publishes content that is both racist and threatens violence to named individuals and members of certain races and religions.

Here are some samples from the many hundreds of disgusting writings at Barbados Underground where the senior advisor to our Prime Minister publishes his articles…

Barbados Racism A1

I guess the writer of that last comment isn’t too worried about prospective tourists discovering Barbados Underground blog through Google and other search engines. Obviously, Harley Henry doesn’t worry about it too much either.

That’s just a start folks. Here are a few more samples of writings posted at Barbados Underground…

  1. Oh My My My!

Lookum like BFP throw de nuclear bomb story not Hartley Henry.

  2. PiedPiper

This is one of those times when an emoticon would come in handy. I am literally bug-eyed and will return with a more in depth post after I put my eyes back in their sockets. 🙂

  3. @BFP…

A simple question: why do you have such a hate-on for BU?

I am, as should be quite clear and documented by now, a “white man”. And yet I spend some of my time over on BU, rather than here at BFP, *BECAUSE* of the open nature of BU.

I have thick skin. I’m OK with commentators like Negroman and Hopi, et al, expressing what they really believe. (Or, at least, what they *claim* they really believe.)

And I believe strongly that the only way to find solutions and common ground is to undertake heartfelt, heated debate, and to be honest about our feelings and thoughts.

As you yourselves once said about me on this very Blog: “Halsall makes his points with no hyperbole or shouting – just stating simple facts and asking polite yet devastating questions.””.

So I ask again: why your hate-on for BU?

  4. passin thru

Chris, why is publishing what someone has written “hateful” ???

Barbados Free Press writers, readers and many Barbados Underground readers tried to stop BU’s slide into racism for better than a year.

Leaving comments up that a murdered Canadian tourist is “white trash” was the end for me and many others.

BFP has an excellent question about why a senior government person like Harley Henry wants to publish articles on a blog that leaves up comments that Mrs. Schwarzfeld is “white trash”.

    WTF was Henry thinking?

  5. passin thru

    Chris,

Ask yourself this about “open speech” at BU. How long would the “open speech” last if BU was invaded by a bunch of red neck good old southern boys calling for the expulsion of blacks from the USA and talking about using black women sexually?

How long would that sh*t talk be left up at Barbados Underground?

The owner and readers of Barbados Underground have different values than the people who run Barbados Free Press. That is plain to see.

As a Barbados Underground supporter you should not be embarrassed or upset by the comments that BFP has copied and displayed here.

You should be PROUD of those comments because that is what you are defending and supporting.

So say it loud and proud, Chris: “Murdered Canadian tourist Mrs. Schwarzfeld is white trash.”

  6. @passin thru…

Sadly, hatred exists in our world. Racism exists in our world. *HORROR* exists in our world…

I believe that is better to be honest, and to engage in dialogue and debate, with those who hold such positions (or worse, do such things) than to simply pretend it doesn’t exist…

Bush Jr. didn’t have much success against the Taliban, or all the others who hate the “West”, despite all his military power, did he?

Perhaps discussion, and *much*, *much* time, will have better results for solving some of our world’s problems, differences, and inequalities.

Censorship, and/or the limiting of open discussion, is the antithesis of this (IMHO)….

  7. Red Lake Lassie

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

That is how Roosevelt O. King of BANGO (Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations) talks about women????

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

  8. @passin thru: “So say it loud and proud, Chris: “Murdered Canadian tourist Mrs. Schwarzfeld is white trash.”

    *I* never said that.

Someone I have argued against extensively said that.

But I am proud that that debate could be conducted, and argued, publicly.

With very few exceptions, I abhor censorship and the constraint of open dialogue and debate.

  9. Red Lake Lassie

Discussion and giving people license to spew hate are two different things. Clearly murdered tourists as “white trash” is going too far.

As far as the treatment of white women or any women by Roosevelt O. King:

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

That is how Roosevelt O. King of BANGO (Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations) talks about women????

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

  10. PiedPiper

I have just one question for you Halsall. Has a year’s worth of debate and discussion about the racial hatred expressed over there changed one thing? Has it moved the host of BU to put a stop to it? Has it changed the thinking of rabid racists at BU? The answer to all three questions is a resounding NO!

  11. PiedPiper

Red Lake Lassie, it makes you feel like you need to take a shower doesn’t it?

  12. Canuck 5 times to Barbados

I didn’t know some barbados people looked at us like that. I am upset that after reading the comments Mr. Halsall is defending the people who leave this “trash” talk on their website Barbados Underground.

  13. PiedPiper

BFP Staff: 1) I admire your courage. 2) Gird your loins for the fire rage. 🙂

  14. Canuck 5 times to Barbados

Does BANGO receive funding from the Barbados Government?

I second Red Lake Lassie’s observations:

    “Ewwwww!!!!!!

That is how Roosevelt O. King of BANGO (Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations) talks about women????

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!

    Ewwwww!!!!!!”

  15. Hants

BFP I have a problem with this post.

The majority of posters of BU are Bajans from all walks of life and actually have serious debates and make meaningful contributions.

I think they are a good target audience and have a right to read HH comments.

You should not punish all because a few racists publish disgusting comments at BU.

Very provocative headline. Bad for the image of Barbados but good for ratings.

Cut yuh nose spoil yuh features.

  16. And now the Astroturfing, and “Sock Puppetry”, begins…

    LOL….

  17. Stanley Hewitt

    Oh, I have an idea.

Why don’t we set up Neighbour Action Groups (NAGs) in every community. These NAGs can provide important information to the Police, Immigration Authorities and to Hartley Henry on issues related to: Nationality, Sexual Orientation and Newspaper Preference.

Here’s how it will work. If someone is either Black or Indian and is of Guyanese nationality, that person should wear a badge on his or her shirt bearing the Caricom insignia (CC). These persons should then be transferred to a special camp far from the native Barbadian population and eventually shipped overseas to a Caricom country of choice. In all instances, white people shall be exempt from any or all of these sanctions because God created them more equal.

If someone is suspected of being gay, that person should wear a badge bearing the insignia “M”. Such a person should be carted of to QEH for immediate brain surgery and counseling and/or have their names published on select blogs.

All readers of the Nation newspaper should henceforth also register as a reader of said newspaper and wear the insignia “N” on his/her crotch. School age children shall be entitled to strike this area with their book bags.

Persons of deviant persuasion who should be exempt from such treatment should be tagged accordingly: sexual harassers (“HH”), closet homosexuals (“H”), child molesters (insert insignia here) and those who have foreign bank accounts to hide ill-gotten financial gains (again, insert insignia here).

Persons bearing the “CC” and “M” insignias should also be subject to genetic engineering procedures to ensure non-proliferation of the species. In the event there has been any co-mingling of native Barbadians and these groups, the offspring of such unions should be sent to Trinidad where they are used to mongrelized breeds.

    Tell me what you think.

  18. PiedPiper

So if a person were a white, gay, sexual harasser, who reads the Nation would get what designation? Rhetorical question.

  19. PiedPiper

Once again Hants, you have missed the point. This is about the current government of Barbados supporting a racist web site.

  20. PiedPiper

Provide us with proof of the above statement Halsall otherwise your allegation has no merit.

  21. Sorry PiedPiper… (LOL…)

That’s not how the Sciences work…

Until something is *disproven*, it is possible….

  22. Anonlegal

    Hants says:

“Very provocative headline. Bad for the image of Barbados but good for ratings.”

But Hants, isnt it arguable that the racially charged submissions on BU are also bad for the image of Barbados? If a tourist is interested in exploring the “underground” caves of “Barbados”, their google search may take them directly to a BU blog reflecting the vile posts of Negroman and company.

They may see this as a reflection of Barbadians.

  23. Mugaffy Allamby

    That is quite ironically funny…..hahahaha.

But, how about the down-low crew, that a difficult one, nuh. Them clean on the face of it, but when dem meet up wid de ‘boyz’….

  24. plain and simple

Lets not beat around the bush

    BU is a racist rag

They spew hate which is completely illegal in Canada and any responsible media outlet would censor this behaviour and ban the culprit.

Why does Canada have a special Tax treaty with a country that pours billions through Barbados and then allows and in some cases promotes racial hatred where an innocent murdered Canadian Tourist is described as “white trash”?

  25. Mugaffy Allamby

See…so you are all aliens and I am the only genuine Eart inhabitant!

  26. Mugaffy Allamby

After all Chris boay…’Until something is *disproven*, it is possible….’

  27. Chicago

Hants there are a number of things goiing on in this post and one of them is that Barbados Underground’s editors/editor (david?) made a choice to let people use his blog to spout the most despicable things. (I think they are despicable. Others think it is truth. Okay, I know that.)

That is David’s right to facilitate those people to give them a public forum and access to his audience of thousands of readers or whatever number of people visit his blog every day.

That is David’s right to let them call a murdered Canadian tourist what they called her.

That is David’s right to let people say that 90% of white women tourists come to Barbados for sex with black men. That is his RIGHT to let his blog be used by these people for their purposes.

David made a choice. It is not “a few” people making these comments as you say. It is many and it has been going on for almost two years.

David has a RIGHT to let the post stand about “white trash”.

What I want to know is why the senior advisor to our Prime Minister publishes material on that blog.

  28. Postit Note

Chris, much of what you say could make sense. But a question. You wrote, “And I believe strongly that the only way to find solutions and common ground is to undertake heartfelt, heated debate, and to be honest about our feelings and thoughts.” How do you tell that what is written on a blog is ‘heartfelt’ and ‘honest’, rather than shallow and dishonest? A ploygraph scans the posts? Or are you speaking for yourself and assuming that others are like you?

  29. Postit Note

Chicago, how do you or anyone know how many independent commentators are posting on BU?Whether David has a right or not that is a separate issue.

  30. @Postit Note: “How do you tell that what is written on a blog is ‘heartfelt’ and ‘honest’, rather than shallow and dishonest?

I can’t. As I’ve said before, there is a great deal of Astroturfing and Sock Puppetry going on. It’s a Public Relations (PR) game, at the end of the day…

But if I (and others) always speak and respond honestly to any comment, and speak our true minds, I/we might *hope* that our Signal will get past all the Noise.

    It’s an uphill battle, admittedly….

  31. PiedPiper

Mugaffy, if ‘e carryin a camera with a copy of The Nation, den you would know 😉

    Barbados Free Press

Comments on Barbados Free Press have of late been very few. Is this your attempt to boost comments?

Some one at Barbados Underground remarked that Barbados Free Press is a solution waiting for a problem. Do you think that you have found your problem now?

  33. Ewwwww!!!!!!

As a woman I am disgusted by the comments of Roosevelt King. There are dozens of his comments at Barbados Underground and the ones published here are tame in comparison.

Postit Note go to Barbados Underground and look around. There is a core of ten or fifteen people using the blog for racist propaganda. King is one. Kiki, negroman, hopi, sargeant, david are five more off the top of my head plus some other regulars. They hate whites but mostly they hate indo-guyanese. Black guyanese are ok for them but not indian.

  34. Anon

This thread is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Good Sunday entertainment Barbados Free Press. Got anymore like this planned?

  35. West Side Davie

The content and volume of the racist comments published at Barbados Underground says it all. There is very little left to be said and what that blog has become.

I too am wondering what Mr. Henry was thinking to publish on that blog in that company.

Mr. Henry will always survive, but Mr. ROK of Bango will not come out of this unscathed when the women he works with read his comments. If I were Mr. Henry, I wouldn’t be eating out too much in the next few weeks because most of the cooks are women! LOL

  36. Anon

Hartley Henry has a right to speak the truth like anyone else.

Quite often the truth hurts. People on this blog seem more interested in cover up and censorship than anything else.
Hartley Henry knows the truth and he spoke the truth. The Nation needed to know about what is going on.

  37. cq8

I agree that Hartley Henry can hold his own and publish what he wants. I have a problem with him publishing at a blog that calls a murdered Canadian tourist “white trash”.

I also have a problem with Mr. King’s particular brand of abuse of women. It is unseemly for a public figure to post what he did on the internet.

  38. So… BFP…

What says you, of the above?

  39. West Side Davie

I meant “If I were Mr. King…” Please change it BFP.

  40. West Side Davie

I have another issue for BFP.

What did Prime Minister Thompson know about Hartley Henry’s Barbados Underground article with all the explicit allegations?

And when did Thompson know? Before or after Henry published on BU?

  41. **Adviser to the President**

laughing all the way thru the door

  42. Postit Note

I like the answer but then have to ask if BU feel the same. Honesty of replies seems to matter not a bit to many commentators there, if the direction does not suit. That is dishonesty by them with all their long talk about truth and freedom of expression.

You may sit happily with them but do they really feel at ease with you only because you seem to offer no real counter positions. I see a lot you play like devil’s advocate. Maybe I have not read enough of the posts.

  43. I Do Not Get It

You guys are so focused on the blame that you are missing the big picture. If David Thompson and the DLP are rendered impotent after one term, where will you go?

Oh, I know. The BLP! Soon they’ll be yakkin up equal rights, transparency, the environment and all that.

I live in the US where we have our own problems, but I do marvel at your ability to keep taking a beating by your elected and unelected public servants.

  44. Jason

Mr. Roosevelt O. King probably forgot that when words are posted on the internet they cannot be recovered.

It’s not called the “World Wide Web” for nothing.

I read more of his comments over there (BU). If King is married he is in trouble!

  45. PiedPiper

What puzzles me is this. Put aside the bombshell article that HH dropped at BU involving the conflict with some Nation staffers, and instead, just think about HH, the political strategist for the DLP, posting on a regular basis to a known racist site. The PM has to be aware that HH posts to BU. Is the PM’s mother not a white Bajan? I can not fathom the contradiction of this situation. It would appear that the PM’s mother is inadvertantly being disrespected along with the PM’s own heritage and lineage.

  46. Jason

I posted a number of reasoned comments at Barbados Underground that were critical of the government (DLP government) and they didn’t publish them. One went up for about ten minutes and then they took it down. That was about why no coroner’s inquest for the Codrington family members killed in the cave-in.

David “free speech” Barbados Underground won’t let me post about that.

  47. So, I ask again (politely…)…

    BFP… What says *YOU*?

  48. King Dyall

As a mongrel – 50:50 = B:W Bajan it saddens me that in the 21st century racism is alive and kicking. However, on reflection I realise that many of you who are Black, White, Chinee, Indian or other “pure” races will always have a personal bias to “your” race. Racism will not die a natural death until everyone of us looks like the other – earliest date for this happening – 3,510 (i.e. 1,500 years). In the mean time we have to learn to coexist.

  49. akabozik

Chris is “proud” there was a debate at Barbados Underground as to whether a murdered Canadian tourist was “white trash” or not????

Don’t expect to see me back there anytime soon. Been there twice. There are better places with friendlier people and this white trash defense is the lay straw for me.

  54. @BFP… Sigh…

    I ask again, politely…

What says *YOU* to the above?

  55. PiedPiper

Anon, a question for you if I may? All those captured and copied comments that are displayed for all to see in this article, what exactly would you call those kind of remarks? Do you have a name for them that you would care to share with us? Are they tokens of respect and affection? Just what are they? Kindly, let us know.

  56. @BFP… Just as an aside…

Why is your “time” off by four (4#) hours?

According to my *extremely* accurate clock (NTP synchronized +/- 100 ms), it is currently 1716 hours (AKA 5:16 pm).

So could you please explain why this post is date-stamped at 9:16pm?

  57. PiedPiper

Halsall, has it occurred to you that today is Sunday, a day when most have a nice, nap-inducing Sunday lunch and time spent with family and friends? BFP, is not ignoring you they are just busy enjoying real life.

  58. @PiedPiper…

Please forgive me for this, but was this Blog not posted today, Sunday, 2009.08.30:1606 [sic] (read: 1206 (read: Noon) Barbados time)?

Has not BFP, on this very Blog, not complained about BU not paying enough attention to content and moderation?

Has not BFP claimed that they have several editors / moderators?

    The world is 24/7…

    Are we?

  59. rhetorical

would that be sociopath and race baiter Black Woman who reads BWWR

  60. Puzzled

If those comments at Barbados Underground aren’t racist, what would you call them Anon? Why can’t black people be racists? Any person can be a racist.

  61. Puzzled

I can answer that because I do it at my blog too.

This blog is time stamped in UTC (Universal time) that used to be known as Greenwich Time.

It is common in the IT industry to have all servers running UTC.

  62. Puzzled

BFP taking a day off and Barbados Underground leaving up a comment for months about a murdered Canadian tourist being “white trash” are two different things.

Many people asked David to remove that comment and he didn’t. He didn’t remove it even after BFP and Ian Bourne kicked BU off their links. David defended leaving the comment up.

    Big difference Chris.

Let Marcus and Clive have a day off or the afternoon off. What are you so upset about?

  63. Heard it before

Barbados Underground published an article that said:

“Bajans must understand that Hindu immigrants, with their high fertility rates, and their dislike of miscegenation with the Negro, have already destroyed the social cohesion of two Caribbean territories–Guyana and Trinidad. Now they are invading Barbados.”

In another time the same racist things were written about “high fertility rates” of “negroes” in the Southern states and Jews in Europe.

What a vile piece of hate couched in academic language of “concern”.

It sounds like the language of Rwanda and Congo, not Barbados.

Unfortunately it IS coming from Barbados through the Barbados Underground website.

  64. Twisting words

Chris, BFP wasn’t complaining about “BU not paying enough attention to content and moderation.”

Your question is designed to communicate a lie.

It isn’t a matter of BU “not paying enough attention”. BFP clearly indicates and most of us who frequent the Bajan blogs know that David made a choice to leave that “white trash” statement up. He engages in conversations with the people who make the racist comments and ocassionally he steps into the discussion himself as the BFP story above shows where David talks about black Barbadians being left behind by the breeding of the Indians.

Don’t try to make apologies for what David made of his blog. The Barbados Underground became someplace I don’t want to go anymore. It sickens me.

  65. Twisting words

sorry, I meant David made a choice to leave that “white trash” statement up.

Chris is defending leaving up that statement that the murdered Canadian tourist is “white trash” though.

I think you are wrong Chris. Morally. Politically. Socially.

  66. Twisting words

BFP please change it for me.

    Thanks.

“Bajans must understand that Hindu immigrants, with their high fertility rates, and their dislike of miscegenation with the Negro, have already destroyed the social cohesion of two Caribbean territories–Guyana and Trinidad. Now they are invading Barbados.”

See what I mean? Let’s deal with these trouble makers. They probably need an insignia “C” for coolie.

Let’s set up those Neighbourhood Action Groups (NAGs) as soon as possible and get at the coolies hiding out in the house next door.

Let’s keep the race pure. The Bajan race.

  68. King Dyall

The PM has found that it is politically expedient to be in denial about his white roots. Instead of using his office to reduce or nullify the issue of racism here in Barbados, he has decided to adhere to a stance that he hopes will help his re-election bid come 2013. I am told that even his mother is aware of his anti-white stand and she has repeatedly spoken to him about his racist biases. He is not the first PM in the region who has taken this stance – PM Michael Manley also tried to deny his white roots. I guess a man has to do what he has to do – especially he is a politician.

  69. Twisting words

The truth is that the “bajan race” doesn’t exist. We’re the biggest pack of mongrels in the Caribbean.

  70. Twisting words

This is nothing to do with the PM’s “white roots”. It is about a top government adviser publishing articles on the same website that calls a murdered tourist “white trash”.

PM’s colour or his mom’s colour got nothing to do with it so don’t try and plug in an agenda that doesn’t exist.

  71. Sigh…

IMHO, there is as much hatred here on BFP as there is on BU…

It just manifests in different forms….

  72. cq8

I’m curious Mr. Halsall. What kind of hatred is there here? By whom?

If that is true you must be able to cut and paste some of it into the comments here. Who is the subject of the hate? Who is hating?

I don’t think you’ve quite figured things out.

  73. PiedPiper

Halsall, I think someone over at BU calling fuh you.

  74. PiedPiper

Twisting wirds, King Dyall has made an observation, one that I made also. The irony needs to be pointed out. Here we have a PM whose mother is white but his top political strategist routinely posts articles to a racist blog, Barbados Underground. There is no agenda, it is merely an observation.

  75. PeePeePoo

The Advocate calls it yellow journalism

    Yellow Journalism.
    n.
Journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers.

    Origin: 1898

The color wasn’t new. Yellow has been a primary color in our language for thousands of years. But this yellow was in a new place, in comic strips on the front page of some of New York’s Sunday newspapers. And the newspapers were fighting the fiercest circulation war in American history by clamoring for real war against Spain. In disgust, rival editors called it yellow journalism.

Not new, and not welcomed, nevertheless I show up from time to time. ha ha

I agree with you BFP should keep their editorial rules. lol! which means my post will deleted very soon. ha ha ha lol! Indeed no ONE is going to “tek” BU seriously. But MANY are doing so already. ha ha lol!

Adrian and the boys over at BU must be a little upset. I think I’ll slip over and see wat’s happenin.

  81. PiedPiper

“ha ha ha lol!” “ha ha lol!” “ha ha ha ha ha lol!”
Adrian this is not a chat room. Are you incapable of posting anything without “ha ha ha lol!”? Look up the word “buffoon”.
By the way, you must not have noticed that this article is not about The Nation, The Advocate or yellow or pink journalism but about BU being a racist blog where Hartley Henry is a major contributer and therefore by association, is the DLP government supportive of a racist blog? I just thought I would offer you some incite on the thread as clearly it has escaped you.

“If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for
people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.”
    — Noam Chomsky

A hard pill to swallow but true. Truth is a very sharp double sided sword which we often try to hide from to dull its bite .We need to know what’s out there for real in order to deal with it properly . Unfortunately if only nice things were said but were nice lies in the end, how far will that get us.

Unfortunately Barbados is just like that , we pretend that we are a nice conservative God-fearing moral society on the surface when in truth we ….. bulling , wicking , teefing , fornicating , adultering , whoring and all manner of not so ‘moral’ stuff.

We need to take off the veneer first before we can deal with things.

I am of mixed heritage too……..just like nuff bajans .It’s a little too late to ‘ not dilute ‘ the black genes and blood .Its time to move past skin and get at spirit . That’s why I don’t get caught up with Obama being a ‘black ‘ man really meaning a big change of anything in Amurca.

He ain’t wid de ‘Black” people he wid the ‘have ‘ people who are predominantly white but got in black too. That’s how the system is.

People would have to be very igrant to think that what is said in a blog represents the feelings of the entire populace. If anything , maybe it wasn’t such a good idea for HH to post there.

  84. Darian

What the heck is going on here?

  85. J

BFP asks “We simply desire an answer as to why Mr. Hartley Henry – who very much represents the Barbados government and Prime Minister David Thompson – would publish exclusive political articles on a website that condones, facilitates and publishes content that is both racist and threatens violence to named individuals and members of certain races and religions.”

J answers: Because he could not get his foolishness published anywhere else.

  86. J

“This is about the current government of Barbados supporting a racist web site.”

Hartley Henry is NOT the current government of Barbados.

Hartley Henry cannot even get elected as rat-catcher in Barbados.

  87. J

    designation X.

  88. J

    designation XXY.

    “Mr. Henry will always survive”

    No. He won’t always survive.

  90. Ottawa

That might be true J. The Barbados Advocate wouldn’t have printed what was printed at the Barbados Underground.

  91. Ottawa

Sorry to say J, but I think Hartley Henry is as much a part of the government as any Cabinet Minister. He probably has more say than half of the elected MPs.

  92. J

    It is NOT academic language.

    It is racist language.

There is no such thing as miscegenation.

    The prefix mis means bad.

How can it possible be bad for any consenting adult man and woman, who are not close relatives to have sex and children together.

There is no such thing as miscegenation.

  93. J

    I second that.

  94. J

“Wait wait, The Owner/Editor of the Advocate newspaper is also white. ”

The last time I saw Anthony Bryan he was black.

However I don’t know if he like Michael Jackson has changed his color recently.

  95. June

I’ve read enough rumor, sensationalism, speculation and mis-information right here BFP.

We readers are able to discern what’s worthy of reading. Stop trying to discredit other blogs and better manage your own journalistic standards.

  96. David Ross

I’m in agreement with your last paragraph, insofar as Hartley Henry is promoting BU by posting there.

But you lost me on your earlier comments. It shouldn’t be illegal to run a racist site. If the racists aren’t allowed to spew their tripe online, they’ll just do it at the local rum shop; and non-Bajans will find out about them when they walk by and get harassed.

The answer to those sites is to point them out and to shame them – which is what BFP is doing here. From what I’ve seen, the Bajan commenters here and I think, the majority of Bajans in general aren’t interested in throwing slurs around.

Come to that I’d be interested in seeing the IP for the worst commenters over there. I wonder if some of them are Bajan at all… Jamaicans, maybe? Detroit? I wouldn’t even rule out 14 year old English trolls in Mummy’s basement. On the Internet, no-one knows if you are a dog.

  97. passing thru

BFP didn’t discredit Barbados Underground. David did when he allowed that garbage at his blog and then defended it. All BFP has done is to republish what appears on BU. Why should BU have a problem with that? Aren’t they proud of their blog?

  98. passin thru

Some of the fools over at BU used their real names. Roosevelt O King must be the biggest fool of all to write that trash on the web. He is a public figure and Bango gets government money as do some or most of the NGOs that are members.

Then he goes on the world wide f’ing web and says that 90% of white (women) tourists who come to Barbados are looking to be “sex slaves” to blacks.

THIS is a community leader worthy of public funding? What a joke.

  99. boredickey

When I was a boy many so-called cute lads used to bad talk me with the girls. It worked for a while until the ladies discovered the real truth about me and the rest was history.
BFP(BLP) must be really struggling for respondents that it would resurrect a dead story in order to discredit another blog. Unbelievable.
Quite recently BFP (BLP) claimed it registered 6 million visitors since its existence, nut yet when I browse its website, I notice that very few bloggers actually respond on a daily basis to headlines posted.
However when I go to BU, where freedom of speech is paramount, I see numerous respondents to most topics listed. ???????
If you want to see racist blog sites BFP, please type in your address bar……New York Daily News and USA today and see what bloggers say about black people, Jews, P/Ricans, Mexicans, white people et al.

Another BU fan with a problem that BFP published BU’s racist crap here for everybody to see.

And boredickey? Ten of the usual suspects ranting for hours every day at Barbados Underground makes for lots of comments but not lots of visitors.

Don’t be angry at BFP though. Be proud that the blog you choose to support (Barbados Underground) allows the kind of comments that you want to protect.

Say it loud and proud! “Murdered Canadian tourist Mrs. Schwarzfeld is White Trash. I make no apologies for calling her that.”

Or pick one of the other Barbados Underground comments that BFP highlighted in this article. Be proud about protecting that “free speech”!

  102. victor

It’s pathetic for a country to become so dependent on tourism in the first pIace but to then spew racist crap on the internet, thereby putting of the tourists is akin to poisoning your own bread and butter. What happens if the tourists stop coming because they fear raciaI hatred? Ask Jamaica, where many white tourists are afraid to go unIess to an aII-incIusive hoteI. IncIusive of everything except what the country and its peopIes are reaIIy Iike. Pick a beach, any beach, buy a ticket and spend the whoIe time in your hoteI. You might be anywhere. I dislike the phrase ‘diversity’ that indicates the differences in races. I look for similarities between
people and acknowledge we are all the same really.
    I prefer the phrase ‘inclusivity’.

Anti-white rhetoric is a backlash against white supremacy or ‘exclusivity’ which is the only form of racism practised on a global level.

So your point is that it’s ok for David to allow those despicable comments on his blog and by doing so invite more of the same?

If that’s what he wants for his blog I won’t visit BU but that’s no big deal. People speak like they want to with friends. As people point out David has a right to run he blog the way he want.

Canadian tourists also have the right to read what is at BU and choose someplace else for their vacation.

GearBox, you are like a lot of posters over at BU, either in need of glasses or remedial mathematics classes. I counted 41 seperate posters, not including Adrian posting under “Peepoopoo”. Is 41 considered a handful? No matter how often you say what you want the truth to be, the truth will be only what it is…….the truth.

    Dear BFP:

If is was wrong to say nasty things about the Canadian woman.

    And it was WRONG.

Is is not also wrong for you to repeat/republish the offensive statements?

Are you not doing this to increase hits on your blog?

And won’t reasonable people realize that you (too) are exploiting the memory of the dead woman. As you continue to exploit the memory of the Codrington family.

  122. John

I am a commenter on both blogs.

No doubt some of the comments at BU are way way out of line, unnecessary and seem to come from hate filled individuals.

I believe some need to be removed.

Freedom of speech yes, ….. restraint yes too!!

I have seen some here too on this blog but the policy to be sharp with the posters and remove the post I think has a real merit.

The only two merits of leaving a post with comments that cross the line are that the poster will hopefully re read what he/she wrote and sit and think about it and the responses that come back.

    Maybe they can effect change.

The other merit is that it alerts people who do not entertain thoughts along similar lines that there are people who do.

Maybe they can do or say something to effect change.

Too many horrible things have happened in this world because of repetitive messages of hate designed to stir up human passions.

Sometimes it is good to know they exist and are the result of earnestly held opinions.

Its like a family whose children and parents don’t talk.

After a regrettable incident each will say or think if only we had talked about it, or if only the other guy had listened …. but by then it is too late.

If you want to, it is easy to determine if someone really believes what they write on blogs and if it has merit.

    Engage them.

You will change …. or they will change …. or both of you will change …. and hopefully for the better.

  123. navneet

J, my comment has gone to moderation as well. It doesn’t mean anything other than someone is now at the helm at BFP.

  125. J

But wait. I ain’t married to BFP.

I ain’t married to BU either.

I ain’t got to be loyal to none of them.

    I loyal to the TRUTH.

  126. Keep it real

After reading these ‘horrible’ comments, then going over to BU ( on advice of a workmate), I have come to the conclusion that many of the posters on BFP can not really be everyday Bajans in the streets or shops. I say this because this is the sentiment felt by the average person I have come into contact with on the streets, on job sites, blocks etc, places that I doubt very much most people dare to venture.
Many here are horrified by the comments but make no mistake about it, this seems to be the reality and the true feelings of most ordinary Bajans.
So, before passing judgment on the BU Blog and the whole of Barbados, I will ask most here to take a walk and try to get the true feeling among Bajans. In doing this, I dont mean places like Yatch Club, Port St.Charles, or Hilton, go to places like Hammie, Pugs Bar, Hercules’ or Bridgette’s, where you will meet the real down-to-earth Bajans, who will no doubt keep it real.
Which brings me to the conclusion that these issues are festering right now in the community and should be checked before they become a much bigger problem, with dire consequences for this country.
Just my observation. I await my crucifixion.

  127. RRRicky

You are saying we “ordinary Bajans” believe as the people who wrote these racist comments?

    BULLSH**.

  128. ru4real

    Keep it real

You are correct . These blogs are used as the political mouthpiece for ( generally the DLP party )

Hence the ranting of Wishing In Vain aka Hartley Henry who can happily slander people with impunity unlike in the real world where people fight back with law suits.

  129. Hants

Race issues in Barbados are not festering. Bajans have learnt to compartmentalise their lives without creating serious conflicts.

Some Whites go to cattlewash. Some Blacks go to River Bay.

Then there is the West and South coasts where all races mix based on their interests.

Barbados is still a relaxed peaceful place to live or visit. Quite remarkable when you consider the population density.

Barbados is one of the 12 most densely populated countries in the Western Hemisphere with 2009 data from the Population Reference Bureau indicating that there are 653 people per square kilometer on the island

  130. PiedPiper

Keep it real, I have been to The Yacht Club (in a work capacity), Port St. Charles (by invitation, as a guest). I have never been to The Hilton, never had any reason to but I have also been to Hercules and at Hammie. You are trying to pidgeonhole people and imply that the posters here can not be “everyday” Bajans. I, for one, am well aware that racism is alive and well in Barbados. I heard sarcastic and racist remarks about white people often. Just because this is the way that “everyday” Bajans behave, does not make it right. Neither does propogating this hatred and racism on a blog that the entire international community can view. In most civilized countries, the promotion of racial hatred or inciting those to racial hatred, is a criminal offence.

  131. Jack Bowman

    @ Keep it real

Er … okay … let’s see if I’ve got this straight.

    1. Most people who are repelled by these kind of sentiments (90% of tourists come to Bim to be sex slaves, certain races are subhuman, etc) are not “everyday Bajans”.

    2. Most “everyday Bajans” DO IN FACT BELIEVE THESE THINGS (and all the other repellant things quoted).

    3. People who are NOT “everyday Bajans” should go to places where “most” people think they are subhuman scum looking to be sex slaves.

Which part of this makes sense?

  132. Hants

Let us not forget that Barbados was built from slavery and the Whites had control of the economic
    power .

The perception that white Bajans control Barbados remains.

There is also a perception that white people buying all the land in Barbados.

This is why you will hear ordinary Bajans “venting”
in the rumshops (dem got all de money en we sufferin) especially now “hard times hit we.”

  133. art

Is it comfortable for Barbados to have a regime that manipulates and coerces the media? Read Dr Shorey’s article. Are we Venezuela?

Is it right to have a regime that coerces polling results and pays for stated results? Ask Mr. Wickham if he too received a call?

Perhaps the regime is doing a good job, but even if it is doing a good job; at the same time it is doing something profoundly wicked, cultivating racism for political ends. It is doing so- are Bajans not scared for their democracy?

Are we not talking about a threat to democracy?

Do you not get a feeling when you read aout this that our democracy is being threatened?

    This is Nazi mode.

Maybe at the top they are really not racist, only using racism as a useful tool. What does it matter? That would only mean that they are prepared todo just about anything. Like Machiavelli.

I would prefer to think that they ARE racist.

It’s not some dummy, or group of dummies you’re dealing with. These are proving to be master propagandists who has studied history and knows exactly what he is doing, in Caribbean contexts.

He’s not a Nazi, but he’s building a Nazi army of support and using undemocratic methods of governance. I cannot believe that David of BU could publish that thing on Hindus and then argue that he isn’t. But what about the grand puppet master himself?

Now he’s got you too, calling BFP the racists for pointing it out. Mek muh laugh. Or run.

    But he hasn’t got me.

I recommend we internalise and deal with this threat to democracy Barbados. Racism and this duiiscussion did not lead Trinidad or Guyana into a promised land, did it?

HH say sorry. That would be the prudent thing to do. And then make it right.

But now everyone sees, and my job is done, because it isn’t just one voice in the wilderness.

If you choose to let it grow you’re going to be sorry. If he continues to wield the wicked tool of racism promotion for the sake of getting power he also will be sorry because he will lose.

It is wicked amd mean to do so, they victimise the innocent.

You now can’t say you don’t know Barbados, be well advised.

    End of my story. Goodbye.

    art.

  134. Ottawa

Surely Bajans do not stand around in rum shops talking about the murdered tourist or raped or shot tourists being “white trash” ?

  135. Anon

White people calling Black people racists, is like the pot calling the kettle Black

  136. Jason

The words at BU as captured by BFP and shown here say what they say. They speak for themselves. There is no need for anyone to comment on them or analyze the motivations of the writers. The words at BU speak for themselves.

  137. @Jason… I respectfully disagree.

BFP have selected *certain* passages, without taking into consideration or presenting the counter statements made to those presented above.

Also, Barbados Underground often bring forward issues of concern to Bajans. Everything from Religion to Telecommuncations, Racism to Land Use.

Yes, things can get heated, but the reason I frequent BU rather than BFP is because David (the moderator) allows all positions to be presented — even those which he doesn’t agree with….

  138. Jason

We are going in circles Chris. David can allow whatever he wants at his blog. You think all discussion of all positions is healthy.

I think that David’s blog has been taken over by a fringe group and that his decision to allow “anything goes” is unwise to say the least.

BFP’s point and question is that senior government personnel like Hartley Henry and public figures who take government funding like Mr. King should not associate themselves, the government and their organisations with a website that publishes what we see in this article.

I also know that David does NOT allow all comments. I and others have posted reasoned anti-DLP comments at BU only to have them removed. In that context, and considering some of David’s personal comments and articles at BU, I can safely say that David, like everyone. has an agenda.

I disagree strongly with his decision to allow comments as shown in BFP’s article.

  139. @Jason: “You think all discussion of all positions is healthy.

Healthier than censorship, yes, with *very* few exceptions.

@Jason: “I and others have posted reasoned anti-DLP comments at BU only to have them removed.

I can’t speak to that. I’ve only once had a comment not published, and in that instance, I was thankful of it.

@Jason: “…I can safely say that David, like everyone. has an agenda.

    And BFP doesn’t?

  140. Jason

I should also point out that many of the comments at BU call for violence and physical confrontation towards various other races and named people.

From such seeds grew Rwanda, Darfur and Sobibor.

For David to publish the seeds of hatred and actual calls for violence is unacceptable and probably is a violation of Barbados and US law where WordPress is from.

  141. And I should point out that others call for understanding and reconciliation.

@Jason: “For David to publish the seeds of hatred and actual calls for violence is unacceptable and probably is a violation of Barbados and US law where WordPress is from.

As you yourself said Jason, “everyone has an agenda”….

  142. agenda for sure

BFP seems as if it has had a clear stated agenda from day 1.

full legislated transparency and accountability with severe penalties and enforcement.

Responsible free speech and dialogue without personal attacks and hate.

BU has given up pushing ITAL now that its party is in power and the DLP’s promises solidly broken.

BFP moderates out all vile and most unnecessary personal attacks.

BU has given itself over to a fringe of hateful unproductive people with a racist message and a political agenda.

Could they please stay on their own site so we don’t have to start scratching and have so many hot showers.

  143. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall

Above, you say that “With very few exceptions, I abhor censorship and the constraint of open dialogue and debate.”

You have said the same thing several times in various ways, sometimes with emphasis (“Healthier than censorship, yes, with *very* few exceptions”).

It’s time for you to clarify. What, exactly, are your “very few exceptions”?

Thanks. And I trust that you and yours are well.

  144. nevermind kurt

BFP’s agenda is worn on their sleeve and I for one welcome their calls for ITAL and integrity in Barbados politics and civil service, and BFP’s environmental concerns (I wish they would do more environmental / alternative energy articles.)

Barbados Underground wears their agenda on their sleeve too.

    a. DLP in power no matter what.
    b. No more talk about ITAL.
    c. No more immigrunts, indo-guyanese.
    d. European tourists tolerated if they bring money or want to have sex with BU or BANGO personnel.

  145. PiedPiper

    ohhhhhhh Lord……very funny.

  146. Justine from Iowa

Mr. Halsall is defending publishing the phrases “Murdered Canadian tourist Mr (sic) Schwarzfeld is white trash.” and “Physical confrontation (with other races) must be the order of the day now in Barbados.”

I don’t see how any reasonable person can defend publishing those statements. Mr. Halsall has lost perspective.

It is unbelievable that your government people talk like that (Mr. King) and allow their names to appear on that loathsome website. (Barbados Underground)

  147. @Mr Bowman: “It’s time for you to clarify. What, exactly, are your “very few exceptions”?

Anything dealing with Juvenile Exploitation. Especially Juvenile Sexual Exploitation.

@Mr Bowman: “And I trust that you and yours are well.

Except for my beloved cat of seven years being hit by a car and killed last week, yes, I and my are well. I pray we remain so.

    Thanks for asking….

(BTW, in some jurisdictions, even your above (I hope genuine) question could be considered threatening, and acted upon.)

  148. PiedPiper

I would recommend that any posters/visitors to this site, register a formal complaint with WordPress.com. It is not enough to voice your concerns. There is a need to act. Carefully read the Terms of Service Agreement that WordPress posts on it’s site and ensure your complaint meets their criteria.

  149. @Justine…

I’m defending *dialogue*, and free speech. *NOT* the above statements.

And with respect, I spend a lot of time thinking (perhaps too much). My position, and perspective, is well considered.

When I was alot younger (alot alot) I remember being told that the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow was alleged to have said in a speech that the “white” people of Barbados needed to be carried out to sea in the Lord Combermere (may be wrong about the name of the ship) and the ship sunk.

However, the same Prime Minister mixed freely with all people of all colours.

In the 1960’s Patsy Springer came out against integrity legislation in a speech in Parliament using skin colour to “support” his argument. I have the paper clipping with the reference to Hansard.

Don Blackman was known for his routine racist comments on and off the political platform, probably late 1980’s.

These are examples of leaders using public fora to utter what were, then and now, racist statements.

… but my feeling is that in the 1960’s and 70’s the statements were not meant to be racist but were rather used as a means to create an environment where the politicians could get their hands on assets and assert their power.

Like any self respecing politician, these guys were frightened and insecure and used any means to hide that fear by transferring it to others.

As time went on the politicians of the 80’s and 90’s found themselves getting called.

It is alleged that as a result of the statements attributed to Don Blackman, “redressing past imbalances” the Barbados Government got taken to court by CO Williams on the award of the Highway 2A contract.

It was drawn out and finally the GOB found itself having to pay damages …….. but it had to go all the way to Privy Council. Our courts should have dealt with it and Don Blackman.

Liz Thompson in her response to Richard Goddard on National TV ……….

….. I think a learned response, a politicain under pressure hitting back by any means necessary.

It is not surprising to read the comments some have posted because there are many people alive who came up hearing similar sentiments expressed by their leaders and like Liz, strike back when put under pressure by Guyanese …. or by anybody ….. and make no mistake, Barbados and Barbadians are under pressure.

The language used before, by our leaders and subsequently by us, is no longer cool to hear and I only hope that the authors go and reread what they wrote.

All of the problems are soluble and do not require the extreme opinions voiced in order to solve them.

  152. ROKstar

Just like all the other tourists in BIM, I wanna be a total slave to the BANGO head honcho.

Man, I thought OUR “community leaders” over away were freaky, but you got slimeball heaven back home. Un-f/ing-believable.

It wasn’t a question. And it was sincerely meant.

…….I, for one, am well aware that racism is alive and well in Barbados. I heard sarcastic and racist remarks about white people often.

..And tell me….have you ever heard the same sarcastic and racist remarks about blacks often too. The fact that you chose to highlight one race, shows me exactly where your biases lie.

  155. Anonymous

Ottawa, will you learn to read and understand first. That is not what was being said!!

How very sad that some regular posters to BU are suggesting that BFP did this expose strictly out of a need to increase flagging traffic/visits to it’s site. Are we to conclude that they feel the whole issue of promoting racial hatred is not a worthy topic of discussion? Do they feel they are a law onto themselves and answerable to no one? Are they not prepared to stand up for their convictions by full exposure and examination of those convictions?
There has been a vigorous campaign by one individual to discredit BFP by constantly asserting that BFP staff are white and have a “white agenda” and therefore should be shunned by right thinking Bajans. This assertion has been put forth repeatedly and the sheep who can’t think for themselves follow merrily along, bahhhhh bahhhhh. This individual has a long history of attempting to control blogs and then disseminating false allegations and threatening personal exposure of those who will not knuckle under to his control.
BFP has openly and honestly asserted that their group runs the gamut of racial makeup and I believe them, furthermore, it is of no consequence to me. Those that prefer to believe that this blog is run by White Bajans because one person keeps insisting it is so, without providing any proof, are just sheep.

  157. J

John wrote “the GOB found itself having to pay damages ……..”

    No.

The tax-payers of Barbados (all of us) had to pay the damages.

  158. Jack Bowman

Mr. Halsall explains above that his “very few exceptions” to censorship are “anything dealing with Juvenile Exploitation. Especially Juvenile Sexual Exploitation.”

Thank you, Mr. Halsall. Perhaps, then, you have an opinion about something written on Barbados Underground by a local “community leader”:

    http://bajan.wordpress.com/2009/07/28/homosexuality-maybe-linked-to-our-ancestral-experience/#comments

Quoting … “There are some white men who recruit white girls especially, anywhere from 14 yrs and up to 20. Give them a supposedly prize vacation to the Caribbean in an all inclusive destination. Then these men solicit the better off black men to pay them to come to the resort in droves for these girls who do nothing but suck these black men for the duration of their vacations.

“Right now, I KNOW OF AT LEAST THREE TOURS GOING ON IN THE CARIBBEAN; I MEAN IN PROGRESS AS I WRITE … These girls so hungry that they doing it free … Well, for those who giggling, I like Sparrow, never had a white meat yet.”

If you do have an opinion about that, Mr. Halsall, feel free to share it.

    Thank you.

  159. Jack Bowman

I’m not “giggling”, Mr. Halsall. Are you?

  160. J

PiedPiper wrote on August 21 …”August 31, 2009 at 1:47 pm…J, my comment has gone to moderation as well. It doesn’t mean anything other than someone is now at the helm at BFP.”

BFP still hasn’t published my comment.

    You ask them why.

Since they seem to publish everything you write, why don’t you ask them to publish this morning’s comment?

  161. J

If I am critical of BFP they quite often make my comments disappear.

  162. Mr. Bowman…

    I *rarely* giggle…

Your above quoted language, if true, should be dealt with immediately. Shouldn’t it?

Good that this allegation could be brought forward, isn’t it?

  163. PiedPiper

J, my comment from this morning has not been published either and I suspect it is because they don’t want to see too much petty infighting with posters who have come over from BU.

  164. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall says:

“Mr. Bowman… I *rarely* giggle… Your above quoted language, if true, should be dealt with immediately. Shouldn’t it? Good that this allegation could be brought forward, isn’t it?”

You’ll have to forgive me, Mr. Halsall. Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought that I’d asked you very easy questions. Perhaps not. Perhaps the memory plays tricks.

But you did, at least, reply, and I thank you for that.

Could you clarify a few things for me? Thanks.

You say: “Your above quoted language, if true …” It’s a direct quotation. I provided the link. I don’t know what you’re asking me to show to be “true”. Please don’t hesitate to ask me for further clarification, if need be. Thanks.

You say that “if true”, the “language” “should be dealt with immediately. Shouldn’t it?”

I don’t understand your question. Could you rephrase? Thanks.

You say: “Good that this allegation could be brought forward, isn’t it?”

Mr. Halsall: what allegation? I see no allegation. I see a “community leader” asserting his VERY CURRENT KNOWLEDGE of sexual abuse. Where is the allegation?

Very many thanks for your attention to these matters, Mr. Halsall. If I did not fear that you might believe me to be insincere, I would wish well to you and yours.

I am very sorry to hear of your cat. I am a cat owner (as you will have surmised from my private email to you several days ago), and I understand your sense of loss.

    Best wishes to you, sir.

  167. PiedPiper

Anonymous, yes I have heard sarcastic and racist remarks made about blacks, sadly the comments I heard were mostly made by other black Bajans.

  168. Jack Bowman

What happened, Mr. Halsall? Your burnished principles about juvenile exploitation disappear like smoke in the wind if your fellow “intervenor” suggests on a public forum that people might “giggle” at the sexual exploitation of teenagers? What happened to your “principles”, Mr. Halsall? What happened to your honour?

Does the “community leader’s” comment about teenagers make you giggle? Just asking. It’s a simple question.

  169. Really Mr. Bowman?

Quoting your above: “…as you will have surmised from my private email to you several days ago….

Please let the record show that I *rarely* receive any emails from anyone on BU. Almost never, in fact…

  170. Jack Bowman

I sent the mail directly to your jump-through-the-hoops email address, copied to BU.

    I know you got it.

If you claim you didn’t, I will feel free to copy the entire thing onto BFP right now (it refers to your fellow intervenor).

BTW, you didn’t offer an opinion as to the community leader’s view about what should induce giggling.

    Best wishes.

  171. Mr. Bowman AKA LIB…

    I know the e-mail you’re referring to.

Please post it here on BFP.

  172. PiedPiper

After reading your post Illuminator, I feel a need to correct and clarify a post I made earlier. You are right when you say that a blog does not represent the feelings of an entire populace. When I said that racism is alive and well in Barbados, I did not intend to imply that it was rampant. It exists on both sides of the fence but black on black racism seems to have it’s roots in “classism” which, in turn, is tied to how light your skin is perceived to be. Not that I’m a big fan of Rihanna but she has publicly spoken of the bullying she received as an adolescent, in Barbados, because of the perception of her skin colour.Racism exists all over the world, the Japanese look down on the Chinese and consider them inferiors, the Chinese consider the Tibetans an inferior race and so on and so forth. Let us not forget white on white racism in our not so distant past, Hitler’s plan for “a master race” which included a “final solution” to iradicate the Jewish population.
Your final paragraph, though, shows you are keeping your eye on the ball which is that no government employee, and especially one as high up on the food chain as HH, should be a regular contributor to a blog which incites racial hatred.

  173. Rumplestilskin

So, point taken that the moderators and commentators at BU wish for a free for all?

Is that the official position and are the authorities willing to support this?

Will there be an amendment to libel laws, allowing an everyday citizen to say anything and everything?

Please let me know the time and date that the law will be passed.

One minute after that should be very interesting indeed.

Heck, I may also feel free to contribute then too.

    Should be fun.

  174. Mr. Bowman AKA LIB…

I, and we, await your answer…

  181. PiedPiper

Really Pat, that surprises me and I would imagine it would surprise many Jews.

  182. Jack Bowman

Looking forward to it, Christopher. May I call you Christopher? You can call me Al.

And if you don’t like obscure jokes about old Paul Simon songs, you can call me Jack.

Above, you say: “Yes, things [on Barbados Underground] can get heated, but the reason I frequent BU rather than BFP is because David (the moderator) allows all positions to be presented— even those which he doesn’t agree with….”

I have a little test for that. What do you say? What harm could it do? Why not try?

On Barbados Underground at the moment, one of the lead items is a request from a graduate student. For the purposes of a master’s dissertation, the student asks BU commenters to complete a questionnaire about Barbados residents’ perception of the impact of tourism on this country.

Several people, commendably, have responded—by completing the questionnaire and/or by making lengthy comments in the thread.

I will make this comment in that thread on BU, right now, and it will be interesting to see if it sees the light of day on Barbados Underground:

    Dear Amit,

As regards “tourism impacts in Barbados”, your assessment should not neglect what has been said on these very discussion boards at Barbados Underground by a community authority:

“90% of the white tourists that come to Barbados enjoy being sex slaves to black men”

    http://bajan.wordpress.com/2009/07/28/homosexuality-maybe-linked-to-our-ancestral-experience/

What do you think, Christopher? Take your best guess.

    Best wishes
    Jack.

  183. PiedPiper

Quote from Cgris Halsall: “Yes, things can get heated, but the reason I frequent BU rather than BFP is because David (the moderator) allows all positions to be presented — even those which he doesn’t agree with….”

Several of my posts have never seen the light of day. David has you folks completely fooled about “freedom of speech”.

  184. @Mr. Bowman AKA LIB: “Looking forward to it, Christopher. May I call you Christopher? You can call me Al.

You can call me anything you like… And I get your joke…

Let me please quote you Living In Barbados (AKA LIB):

“I followed the thread as I travelled and saw that some of the consequences, not all of which I know, because they flow from actions yet to be taken, are coming clear. I have reflected on it and captured parts in my blog for today…

Please let me know if this is not the *start* of your e-mail to me (actually, the above quote was starting from the second sentence of the e-mail to me) that you reference above…

Please advise, with your sabre drawn….

  185. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall:

I replied to you again. My reply, again, is “awaiting moderation”.

Please be assured that the sabre was drawn.

  186. PiedPiper

Clive, Marcus, George, Shona: Thought you may find this comment amusing in a sick kind of way. I can only speculate as to the true identity of the author.

    ” Investigator // August 31, 2009 at 11:00 PM

BFP should be tried for treason.

Their goal is to ruin Barbados.

BFP poses a security threat to Barbados democracy and social order as does the narco states of Guyana and St. Vincent.

Jagdeo and wutless, rape suspect Gonzalves, big guts and all, hate Barbados.

They are working together to wreck our way of life.

We must not let that happen.”

Now, when you take this in the context that all BFP has done is reproduce actual posts to BU, one has to wonder who is actually “ruining Barbados”.

  187. Lulu

BLOG WARS ONGOING WHILE ISSUES GO A BEGGING

I fail to see the point of all this he said/he said discussion.

I have long held the opinion that ‘freedom of speech’ is a slippery petard on which many a fool has hung himself.

I well remember the furious indignation with which the blogging community met Mia Mottley’s suggestion that blogs should be subject to the same legal and moral standards of the wider society. There is a valid reason for this view that precludes a simple desire to censor.

The promotion of racial hatred would be one such example. Coming as I do from what is, artistically perhaps, called a ‘rainbow’ family, I know that it takes considerable maturity, analysis and self respect/esteem to fight the natural animal instinct to cleave to those who look most like ourselves. It is in many ways an evolutionary process, but in the absence of tolerance it is nigh impossible.

There are of course many external influences to overcome: peer pressure, personal experiences of discrimination, learned behaviour, low self esteem or personal insecurity, the need to fit in and I could go on.

There is seldom ever any value in resorting to slurs based on physical appearance other than to cause hurt. We Bajans are skilled in this much practiced art. So much so that we no longer realize when we are being unkind or hurtful. Hundreds of examples are flooding into my mind, but I will give you just one or two purely for illustrative purposes. You meet someone you have not seen for some time and they say in the loudest voice possible: “Wuh you get real fat doh” or “Wait you got AIDS? You like you dropping through yuh collarbone?” It is as if we have an emotional deficit when it comes to expressing compliments or simply being tactful. I am sure the sociologists will be able to pinpoint the origins of this behaviour, but which I believe has its roots in a slave society that did not value individual feelings and certainly would have worked hard to extinguish self respect or self esteem.

But I digress. The promotion of hatred based on race, religion, and yes the dreaded words sexual preference; the promotion of slavery or deprivation of personal liberty are all areas to my mind that are deserving of censorship because they are undesirable in my socio-cultural reality. I simply would not want to live in a Barbados where the promotion of these values were the norm.

Clearly we cannot expect that individuals will do the right thing to protect society from the promotion of these values. So my question is how do we as a society promote tolerance that steers us away from value judgements based on personal appearance or differences? It cannot be a free-for-all for man being what he is will quickly regress to the lowest common denominator. This is why societies have rules or laws. There evolves over time a set of norms with which the tribe is comfortable. Over time these norms will change as the society evolves and not always for the better, but we humans often have to learn from experience, both good and bad.

So we arrive at the disgust expressed here that the late Terry Schwarzfeld could be described as white trash. Was this justification for her murder? And let us suppose that she was white trash, was she not a visitor to our country. Were only her money and not her life of any value? I think that most Barbadians would abhor such a notion. So the reaction here is that the comment about her should be censored.

The argument that Hartley Henry posts on a site that allowed the description of Terry to be posted is a purely political one. Personally the man is little more than a manipulator of public opinion to me. The fact that he chooses to do so in a manner that I find distasteful negates his ability to shape my opinion on anything. But then my mother didn’t raise no fools. The fact that he is in the employ of the Prime Minister is to my mind a greater indictment on the Prime Minister than anything else.

The political paros will no doubt leap to his defense, but then it is known that less-evolved members of the tribe cleave to those who look most like themselves.

Am I going to lose any sleep over the fact that Henry, as the Prime Minister’s right hand man posts on BU, which does not share my view of editorial responsibility or my abhorrence of the promotion of racial hatred? I have already formed an opinion of them that does not require further reinforcement by where Mr. Henry chooses to post his highly paid hogwash. Is he guilty by association? I guess that will depend on your view of what is worthy of censorship as we try to build a society in which the majority of the tribe feels comfortable.

  188. Mr. Bowman…

    I have no doubts…

However, if I may please observe, if you were actually in battle, and you were so constrained, you could be dead by now…

    Best regards….

“We started a blog in large part because we were concerned about what was being said about Barbados in the blogosphere. Based on what some very biased people were saying, it would be very easy to equate Barbados with Zimbabwe. That is not the Barbados we know, the country we know and live in may not be perfect but it’s a far cry from what is portrayed on BFP . A dermatologist following their approach would describe someone with acne as having flesh eating skin cancer.”

    NOTES FROM THE MARGIN
    April 15,2008

  190. Themis

Congrats, BFP. By mentioning BU, you have gone above 30 responses for a thread. And TWICE too! You must be a popular blog by now…

  191. Jack Bowman

    Mr Halsall,

I replied AGAIN to your latest, and again the reply is “awaiting moderation”. Seems you’re being favoured. You make a statement; I can’t reply.

Odd, but good luck to you anyway.

  193. Jack Bowman

Mr. Themis beams in with news.

    On 31 August:

“BFP, have you noticed that the only way you increase the number of comments on a thread above 10-15 is if you discuss BFP [sic: but understood to mean BU]”

    On 1 September:

“Congrats, BFP. By mentioning BU, you have gone above 30 responses for a thread. And TWICE too! You must be a popular blog by now…”

Deeply interesting and wonderfully witty. Not in any way tiresomely dull. Thanks.

  194. My back still aches when I hear that word

  195. Mr. Bowman…

I see your above. (Starting “I replied to you again.”) I presume others do as well.

I go out of my way to never to strike at those at a disadvantage, even if they’re striking at me. (Seriously.)

Mr. Bowman — perhaps we might call a temporary truce, while we figure out why I can speak, but you can’t?

  196. Jack Bowman

    Dear Mr. My Back etc,

Superb handle. One of the best handles in the history of handles. I think it’s actually iambic pentameter. Shakespearian.

    Brilliant.

  197. Themis

I find it simply amazing that you could have spotted that, Ms Bowman, you pretentious git!

  198. Jack Bowman

Now, that was rude, Mr Themis. That was rude and uncalled-for.

  199. Please, permit me to be objective. Some people find the cartoons on BFP to be derogatory and offensive. Over the years, GoWEB has co-operated with both BU and BFP, even when others found their content to be offensive. Some people would argue that neither BU nor BFP is a white knight because they would both be shut down if the authorities knew who ran them. For me, I just try to accept the fact that Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Expression are rights, and will inevitably lead to expressions which offend some. Both BU and BFP have crucified the Barbados media houses for censorship but yet it seems you believe some things SHOULD be censored. I’m not taking sides, neither on the issue of censorship nor between the two blogs. I’m merely providing some objective food for thought….

    1. Are we in favour of Freedom of speech / expression?

    2. Should their be boundaries to free speech?

    3. Can freedom of speech and censorship co-exist, or does one automatically cancel the other?

I don’t have the answers, but the answers to these questions would help to answer the real question in this article……should Harty Henry have used BU to publish his article?

  200. So, Mr. Jack Bowman…

Should we call you Living in Barbados (AKA LIB)…

Or should we simply call you Al?

    Please advise….

  201. and the result was?

“Based on what some very biased people were saying, it would be very easy to equate Barbados with Zimbabwe. That is not the Barbados we know, the country we know and live ”

So you chose to start and promote a racist blog that Robert Mugabe would be proud of and the international community would then have proof positive that Barbados is racist.

    Thats clear thinking!

We all know what Robert Mugabe has done economically to Zimbabwe over the past thirty plus years. Can Barbados be far behind?

  202. PiedPiper

I find it simply amazing that you would drag yourself over here just to make spiteful, childish comments like a little kid on the playground. If you have something concrete of interest to either challenge or add to this article please do so.

  203. PiedPiper

    Grrrrrr……above post was for Themis.

  204. PiedPiper

Halsall, Jack has already received his reply from BFP. It is further up on the thread somewhere. They will not be publishing the e-mail, however something about the contents has peaked their curiousity as they may do an article on said contents.

  205. PiedPiper

    L. Smith, I would like to thank you for that video of Stompin Tom Connors.

  206. J

And OUR tax MONEY went into Williams’ already very deep pockets.

  207. J

    Dear Pied Piper:

    I am NEVER petty.

    I NEVER fight.

And I have always posted on both blogs.

I said that if the derogatory language used about the dead Canadian woman was wrong.

    AND IT WAS WRONG.

Then it was also WRONG for BFP to repeat the language here.

I reprimanded Barbados Free Press, and said that I believe that Barbados Free Press was repeating the offensive language here because Barbados Free Press wanted to increase its hits.

    I called BFP a “hits wh*r*”

I guess Barbados Free Press is comfortable reprimanding others, but cannot bear to take a reprimand itself/themselves.

  208. Canadian ex-tourist

    Barbados is off my list.

  209. J

But Mr. Bowman you always insist on calling Bonny Peppa, Mr. Peppa, evey though Bonny has said that she is female.

    Wha’ happen?

You can give lashes, but can’t take them?

If you call Bonny Mr. why can’t someone else call you Ms.

As we say in Barbados “da’ fa da i’n na obeah.”

  210. One who knows

Start with the basics about censorship vs. free speech.

I think we can all agree that it is censorship to prohibit by law a person shouting “fire!!!” in a crowded theatre when no fire exists.

I think we can all agree that the censorship is necessary and reasonable in that case.

Now that we have agreed that even in a free society, censorship has its place – we only need talk about where the balance should be.

    Barbados Underground struck its balance.

    BFP struck their balance.

If Barbados Underground and Mr. King 🙂 are embarrassed that various BU comments have been published elsewhere and noted with disgust, then perhaps they should rethink their balance between censorship and free speech.

Regarding Mr. Harley Henry, I am certain that he regrets both his words and choosing Barbados Underground as the venue to publish them.

I am also certain that Prime Minister David Thompson has expressed the same regrets to Mr. Henry.

robin hood, not all decisions are made based on the issue of physical personal safety. Sometimes people make decisions based on principle, like the principle of not supporting a country which condones a blog like BU whose members claim they are just “everyday Bajans”.
There are lots of more pretty and safe islands than Barbados to travel to.

  213. PiedPiper

So, are you trying to say that the sentiments expressed by some of the more radical elements at BU would be the general consensus of the entire population of Barbados or even a major percentage of us?

  216. from Rl

I have read the article in question “Barbados Undergrund” and also I found your Web-Side by Google.

I must say you can find people like that (racist) around the world in every country in the world, (whities, blackies, yellowies). You can not exterminate people like these.

How silly these people are, you can see also! Europeans and Canadien lives on the same Continent?-back to the school!!!

But it is a dignominy that official representatives of Barbados speak like this. This is a dignominy for all barbadiens.

  217. I hope you don’t stop coming to a destination because some people are racist. News Flash, there are racist people in the USA and Europe that don’t like black people. Should all black people boycott going to those countries? There are white purists in Germany that don’t consider brunettes to be “true whites”. Should black haired whites stop going to Germany?

Wherever you go in the world you will find people with offensive views, but those people rarely represent the majority of the population.

  218. PiedPiper

uhhhhhhhh, I cleared my cache as I do every day? Don’t you? Some of you people seem like you working for a private detective agency or perhaps “secret agents”. Anybody remember that lame American show “Get Smart” about a hapless spy who just couldn’t do anything right?

  219. PiedPiper

I don’t see anywhere in my post where I said that. Robin Hood, this is the internet. Anyone, anywhere at any time of day and night has access to the internet. This is not about a few people with radical views. This is about a) how those few radicals can destroy a countries international reputation because instead of keeping their radical and racist view sin the rumshop over a few snaps and a game of dominoes, they chose to expose those views for the entire world to see b) this same blog, which is potentially ruining the reputation of Barbados internationally is, apparently, supported by a senior government employee, HH.
robin hood, take a look at the few comments here that have been made by potential tourists, people who have either visited Barbados in the past or were consideriing a vacation in Barbados. Do you see the impact of an out-of-control blog and a handful of idiots?

  220. Hants

Oh Canada. Last night in Toronto.

“Former Attorney General Michael Bryant is being questioned by police after allegedly being involved in a bizarre collision that left a 33-year-old cyclist dead on Monday night.

Police say shortly before 10 p.m. there was an altercation between the cyclist and the driver of the car believed to be Bryant, near the intersection of Bloor and Bay which resulted in a minor collision. The cyclist is said to have hung onto the driver’s side while the driver yelled at him to get off as both continued westbound on Bloor.

Witnesses tell police the driver then allegedly veered onto the eastbound lanes and mounted the curb, possibly hitting a tree and a mailbox.

The cyclist eventually fell off and was dragged a short distance. He suffered severe head injuries and later died in hospital.”

Quote from PP…..”robin hood, not all decisions are made based on the issue of physical personal safety. Sometimes people make decisions based on principle, like the principle of not supporting a country which condones a blog like BU whose members claim they are just “everyday Bajans”.
There are lots of more pretty and safe islands than Barbados to travel to.”

I quite agree, PP, however, the point I was trying to make to “Canadian ex tourist” was that no matter what country one visits in the world there will be problems pertinent to that particular place. There is no country in the world that can guarantee the safety of all its visitors.

I recently visited a South American country and every few paces there were soldiers in position with automatic rifles at the ready. Why? Was it because of the harmonious, peace-loving nature of the local people? And even then if visitors were not careful they could find themselves in some serious problems crime wise. Does that prevent tourists from visiting that country? On the contrary, there were tourists all around while I was there.

I suggest you read this comment…..”GoWEB

  223. robin hood

    @PiedPiper

Spare me a minute or two, please.

I am sure that you are familiar with the adage, “that if something ain’t broke, then don’t try to fix it”.

Now, let’s say, for example, as the owner of a motor vehicle, if there was a problem with the braking system of that vehicle then the owner would have at least three choices of what to do to rectify the problem. We could choose to, 1) Drive the vehicle to the dump.
    2) Park it up some where and forget about it. Or 3) take it to a competent mechanic and have it repaired.

In my position (poor&needy) I would prefer to have the vehicle checked and repaired.

Now, having read the comments of some people copied here from BU I would come to the conclusion that “something was indeed
broke and was in need of repair”.

If these comments are the real sentiments of these people then I think we have a problem in Barbados that needs to be “checked and/or repaired. Do you agree?

To my way of thinking it would serve no good purpose to “sweep it all under the carpet” and hope for it to disappear. The “problem” is already here and it needs to be dealt with.

The question really should be…..How best to address the situation? I certainly don’t know the answer. But shouting and screaming at each other on a blog with all the attendant acrimony is certainly of no help. Perhaps, this is where we need a “competent mechanic”. Back to you, my compadre.

  224. robin hood

Mr. Halsall poses a question above: “So, Mr. Jack Bowman… Should we call you Living in Barbados (AKA LIB)… Or should we simply call you Al? Please advise….”

You can call me whatever you want, Mr. Halsall. You can call me Al, if that floats your boat. You can pretend to believe that I am Mr. “LIB”, if that makes you and your constituents happy—because then they’ll have some amorphous hate-figure to obsess about while they’re driveling on semi-incoherently about the need to exterminate “rat-catchers” and “mango-sellers” and stinking half-make Europeans and subhuman Indian scum.

I bid you good day, sir.

    Dear Mr. Halsall,

I replied to your latest (September 1, 2009 at 5:00 am). My reply, inevitably, is “awaiting moderation”. Nothing I can do about that. Sorry. You really do seem to be favoured in these exchanges. Odd, that.

BU expresses much of what ACTUALLY GOES ON IN BARBADOS.

The character I see exuding from the posters on BU are definitely BAJAN.

I am reading and hearing there what I have seen and heasrd ALL MY LIFE AS A BAJAN.

BFP IS JUST BAWLING BECAUSE BU IS MORE POPULAR.

BFP has its adherents and BU has its followers.

At NO TIME have I seen cooments on BU that are critical of BFP.

BFP & BU have different agenda and different followers but BFP is no more saintly than BU.

This thread is a lot of bovine excrement.

There is no reason why BOTH BU & BFP can not co exist.

In another place, Mr. Negroman has emerged to make a statement:

“I make no apologies for calling that murdered white Canadian tourist the term I used and I have no fear for anyone. Barbados Free Press could published my comments for the whole world to see. I DO NOT CARE.”

There are several interesting things about this.

First, Mr. Negroman, while announcing his fearlessness, seems to fear repeating the term “white trash”.

Second, he reiterates that he makes no apologies “for calling that murdered white Canadian tourist” white trash.

Third, though he claims fearlessness, he fears to make the statement under his own name.

As to his name, perhaps Mr. ROK could help. Perhaps Mr. ROK knows. Perhaps not. In the end, who really knows anything? A question for the ages.

  231. 68.210.4.211

    You are right on Sir!

You are telling it like it is.

There are true Bajans on both BU & BFP, and acting like the Bajans they are.

  232. 68.210.4.211

    Great post June!

I too have read enough rumor, sensationalism, speculation and mis-information right here on BFP.

And I have read some good informative and edifying posts on BU as well!

  233. 68.210.4.211

Re When I was a boy many so-called cute lads used to bad talk me with the girls. It worked for a while until the ladies discovered the real truth about me and the rest was history.

When the ladies discovered you had a peeny weeny, they realized that you need not be feared? Is that it boredickey?

Re BFP(BLP) must be really struggling for respondents that it would resurrect a dead story in order to discredit another blog. Unbelievable.

HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU 100%

Re I notice that very few bloggers actually respond on a daily basis to headlines posted.
However when I go to BU, where freedom of speech is paramount, I see numerous respondents to most topics listed.

    THIS IS ALSO VERY TRUE!

    Re
If you want to see racist blog sites BFP, please type in your address bar……New York Daily News and USA today and see what bloggers say about black people, Jews, P/Ricans, Mexicans, white people et al.

    BFP,
    Thanks, George. Already rectified.

  235. PiedPiper

There is nothing I can add to your post. I agree 100%, however I think the suggestion of a “competant mechanic” somewhat simplistic. It is very difficult to change ingrained attitudes in adults, in some, it is also impossible to offer the hand of reconciliation. I could be wrong but I sense in some of the posters in question at BU, a total resistance to change. In real life, people know that they can not say and do as they like or there would be total anarchy and society as we know it would descend into absolute chaos. Civility is not just a word, it is a necessary tool that has developed in order for society to function in relative peace. Even if your views, beliefs and opinions differ enormously from someone else’s, there is a way of debating and learning from those differences without descending into puerile, venom filled attacks based on an individuals skin colour.

How long has it been in moderation? Just curious.

  239. PiedPiper

Honestly, Jack, it’s too funny that anyone would think you were LIB. The two writing styles are at opposite ends of the spectrum and where as you are able to immediately condense down the substance of a post and hone in on the salient points, LIB takes the long way around and I do not mean that as a criticism.

  240. Jack Bowman

    Dear Christopher,

You say: “Please let me know if this is not the *start* of your e-mail to me (actually, the above quote was starting from the second sentence of the e-mail to me) that you reference above…”

Dear, dear Christopher, perhaps you are confused solely by your slipshod attempts to track the email. Could that be the case?

All best wishes to you, Mr. Halsall.

  241. Dear Mr. Bowman.

I haven’t even tried to track the e-mail. Not worth my time to even examine the SMTP headers…

But I note that you didn’t answer my question. Was this the e-mail you were referring to?

  242. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall,

First, I didn’t understand your question (“Was this the e-mail you were referring to?).

I was referring to the email discussed above, which BFP has told both of us that it prefers not to make public.

I tried, Mr. Halsall. I tried to make it public. What more can I say?

You say: “I note that you didn’t answer my question”. Mr. Halsall, with all the respect that is due to you, if you had even attempted to answer the many questions that I pose to you above, this thread would be much, much longer than it already is.

Would you like me to repose the questions? The questions about abuse and honour and censorship?

May your god go with you and (entirely sincerely, as you know, since you received my mail) I’m really sorry about your cat.

  243. Jack Bowman

  244. Hants

I read a post on BU by Negroman.

He stated facts about The Barbados Yacht Club and the treatment of slaves.

If he had couched his language and hidden his obvious “hatred” or written in the style of Tom Clark, some of it would have been simply a number of historical facts.

Imagine if he wrote only the truth about Barbados between 1930 and 1960.

Negroman could also learn from Michael Dyson.

    http://www.michaelericdyson.com/debatingrace/intro.php

  245. Jack Bowman

Do you agree with Mr. Negroman, Mr. Hants?

  246. Mr. “Browman”…

“First, I didn’t understand your question (“Was this the e-mail you were referring to?).

Please don’t play games. I am *way* too busy…

It was a simple question — and one which someone of your training, experience and status would have understood clearly.

Would my question be clearer if I provided the SMTP headers of the e-mail in question?

  247. Hants

No I do not agree with Negroman.

I is a rednegrow and I like white people too much except for my extra light Bajan family.

More importantly I like to see BFP getting nuff action and this topic is “hottt!”

Sometimes I take the role of an “agent provacateur” an dis is bare sport.

  248. Jack Bowman

    I don’t know, Mr. Halsall.

Why not just go for it anyway? Why not?

  249. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall,

First, it would surprise many, including me, if you knew ANYTHING about (as you put it) my “training”.

Second, my father’s name was not (as you put it) “Browman” Perhaps you have a superfluous “r”. Perhaps you are boring. Who knows? In the end, who really knows anything about Mr. Negroman? Perhaps these questions will be resolved.

A lesson for all, that road rage does not pay; that sometimes it is best to accept that the other person in an argument is a moron and walk away; that confrontation oftentimes can result in a conclusion much worse than the original scenario.

We need to teach this to everybody, that, except in a case of ultimate self-defense, if a few words only provoke a violent response, then walk away.

The violent person that you walk away from, will ultimately find someone far worse than they.

Wish them well and WALK AWAY.

  252. OK. Mr. Browman…

Let’s take this one step at a time…

Is the following SMTP Header line part of the e-mail message you’ve referring to above?

    “Subject: Some thoughts

If not, please provide the SMTP Header line (or, simply, the “Title” of the message”) to which you are referring.

Best regards, to you and yours. (Sincerely.)

  253. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall,

The answer to your first question is no.

If you want, I will again try to reproduce my email to you in toto on this board. As you know, I have tried before, and failed.

Please don’t hesitate to pose your second question.

    Best wishes to you, sir.

  254. Jack Bowman

And, Mr. Halsall, please stop addressing me as “Browman”. It’s a small thing, but it matters.

I would not address you as “Mr. Helsalg”.

Mr. B: “And, Mr. Halsall, please stop addressing me as “Browman”. It’s a small thing, but it matters.

Mr Halsmzaq has an opinion, and a little homily to deliver: “Understand, and internalize, that names mean nothing.”

Thanks, Mr H. I’d never quite thought of it that way. Wow! You’re enlightening. Shouldn’t you be teaching at Oxford or something?

Truth to tell, I’m more interested who knew what about the sexual abuse of teenagersin the Caribbean. Dreadfully sorry about that.

Doubtless we’ll be in touch. Good luck to you, Mr. Halsall.

  257. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall,

I have replied to you, at length. My reply is “awaiting moderation”.

You might want to consult a doctor about that sigh, Mr. Halsall. It sounds chronic.

    All best.

  258. PiedPiper

On the outside looking in, it is obvious Halsall, that you don’t want to admit that your were mistaken about the e-mail Jack was referring to and therefore took the quantum leap of assuming that Jack was LIB because obviously LIB has e-mailed you as well. The e-mail Jack is referring to is not the one you assumed it to be. Now, why can you not simply admit that so the two of you can either move forward in the discussion or let the matter drop?

  259. Interesting you mention that; there are racists in Hawaii as well.

I didn’t have a problem with haters when I visited Bim. I knew they were out there, and I overheard “things” (particularly around the rumshops), but I didn’t fear for my safety. Some of that is thanks to your police force who were nothing but helpful to me.

Whereas the word from Hawaii is more and more insistent that the Polynesian locals will pick fights against white people (and black people), and that the police & judges won’t help.

Every country on Earth has a bottom 10-20% with nothing better to do than to badmouth others. In Barbados that percentage seemed to be more like 5% which is why I had a good time over there.

  260. RRRicky

My concern with our “bottom 20%” is that it includes so-called community leaders like Hartley Henry and Roosevelt O. King who both are on the public payroll and both frequent and contribute to conversations that bring out the lowest of the low.

People on the public dollar have no business writing what each of them did on Barbados Underground.

  261. @Mr. Bowman: “I have replied to you, at length. My reply is “awaiting moderation”.

Welcome to the “open dialogue” which exists here on Barbados FREE Press…

@PiedPiper: “On the outside looking in, it is obvious Halsall, that you don’t want to admit that your were mistaken about the e-mail Jack was referring to…

Exactly what part of Mr. Bowman and my mutual attempts to establish exactly what e-mail he was referring to above (hindered by BFP) wasn’t clear?

There has to some simple way of protecting freedom of speech, having a robust discussion and still not offend people’s sensibilities, … not sensitivities!!

I was looking for the constitution to see what it had to say but then I remembered there were at one time three different versions on the net.

So, I went and searched for constitution on BFP and found this article on BFP from a while back.

I am trying to understand what our “constitution”, whichever is the right one, has to say.

    https://barbadosfreepress.wordpress.com/2008/04/13/does-anyone-know-which-barbados-constitution-is-law/

Seems to me that logic and common sense says the protection of freedom of expression, religion, association etc. must be there, but then somewhere in there must be found something that prevents these freedoms from being abused.

Protection from racial discrimination should also be there so I would imagine this must be some sort of “throttle” to the freedom of speech.

I am not a lawyer but I can read …. but …. slow …, so it will take me a while to digest the verbiage and sort out the three versions.

I suspect answers should be found in there somewhere and those quicker than myself at reading, learning and inwardly digesting the material will get there long before me if they want to and have the patience and opportunity.

Me, … I’ll take my time in the hopes I see something that will illuminate a path through this minefield, …. plus …, like many of us, …. I got things doing.

Hopefully someone gets there quicker than I do and can articulate what our constitution protects us against ….. and how it is applicable to this discussion.

  269. Anonlegal

    John:

If you are interested in finding what the constitution says about freedom of speech look at section 20.

If you are looking for the section regarding discrimination on the basis of race, look at section 23.

However bear in mind that the constitution outlines your rights against the Government. It doesn’t address your rights against other individuals.

  270. Concerned

Apart from the wholesale racism and calls for “ethnic cleansing” shown in the comments at BU, one comment copied above clearly recommends and encourages violence saying “I am about to start ethnic cleansing. Physical confrontation must be order of day now in Barbados. Scout, JC & the rest let start revolution.”

People can say what they want short of encouraging violence.

If white tourists are “white trash” to readers of Barbados Underground no amount of talking to these kind of people will change them and there are many websites around that are frequented by racists of all stripes and colors. Barbados Underground is only one more website that allows racist comments.

BFP has a right to not link to BU and to criticize them. That’s free speech.

But when it comes to the Prime Minister’s senior advisor and also the Secretary General of a government funded organization like Bango frequenting a website that calls white tourists “white trash”, that is more than embarrassing.

It is a threat to the very foundation of our economy which is tourism.

Let’s not forget what BFP’s article is about: They say that the PM’s advisor shouldn’t be publishing on a website that publishes “Murdered Canadian tourist Schwarzfeld is white trash.”

  271. BFP

Thanks Lulu, I found it in the spam bucket. No reason for it that I can see.

What a well thought out comment. You spent much time thinking and writing. Thanks for contributing.

    george.

  272. Rickey George

Lulu, I think you should register ‘a slippery petard on which many a fool has hung himself’. A petard was an engine of war for getting past walls (hoist on…etc). Slippery slope? Yes. Rope to hang? Fool and money? Lots of metaphors mixed wonderfully, 🙂

    But substantive points really good.

  273. Living in Barbados

@Jack Bowman, PiedPiper, J: I’ve read a lot of posts recently on BU and on BFP speculating about who may be me in different guises. I found much of it amusing. Some of you will know that you contacted me by e-mail. I think multiple conversations with oneself must get confusing fast. So, I won’t dwell on that. My writing style reflects how I think: nothing is simple, but much can be simplified. I’ve written for an audience that demands analysis for about 40 years so that’s hard to unlearn, but see my blog where I play with different styles.

For J, I’m no numbers person; on the contrary, my passion is with words (and I love word play; a terrible punster). So, thanks for the observations and feedback is useful. On identity ‘crisis’, Chris Halsall contacted me a few weeks ago by e-mail and we mentioned meeting. Perhaps we should do that so that all of us who are real can be visible–I often say that I’m no mystery and write often under my actual name. I think our different styles have to be tolerated, and I have noticed that those who wish to twist will do so. BU has several serpentines who are very good at that, including the ‘who said that?’ approach or ‘let me just ignore that point and go on with some other topic’. I’ve looked a bit at the patterns of discussion on BU, and noted some clear trends, and written about that.

On BFP, the same patterns (which seem to aim to ‘drown out’ opposing views) is not evident. But, honestly, I have not read every post!

  274. PiedPiper

So George, where is Lulu’s post…………..

  275. PiedPiper

LIB, I would be very surprised if Chris Halsall actually met with you because that would mean having to retract many of the assumptions he has made. Your observations about BU are absolutely correct. You can ask a person over there a very direct question about an assertion they have made and you will never get an answer, instead you will be personally attacked for havng the unmitigated gall to question them and that includes the host David as well.

  276. Living in Barbados

@PiedPiper, I’m not sure a meeting would give the result you suggest, but it would allow 3 supposed persons to see that they are 3 not 2. CH has a public face and seems happy to show it. Others, such as ROK, are public and show themselves too. Other seek to and perhaps must remain ‘underground’ but no one is truly anonymous. I have no interest in ‘outing’ anyone but others who may seem aligned now may find such a thing to their advantage if they wish to break alliances (see my post on prisoner’s dilemma). I’ve just been trying to gauge how much the ‘voices’ on the blogs matter. Talking to a few people, it seems that it’s not so loud or well heard, and a message coming from a determined anonymous ‘person’ must often be treated as suspicious.

  277. ro RRRicky

You can’t call Hartly Henry a Racist just because he associates with someone YOU deem to be one.

I talk to heavy rum drinkers but no one in my area associates me with them.

I speak to people who smoke weed, promote promiscuity, curse etc. That doesn’t mean I’m like them, it means that I’m tolerant and non-judgmental.

We have to be careful how we speak of people’s character. You can speak of people’s actions, but those actions are not always indicative of character.

…. but then what about any Bajan (of what ever colour) who became aggrieved at the fact that the Government was not providing protection against racial discrimination … also enshrined in the constitution …..

…. or would the Government only be required or expected to act under the constitution after the “whites” were put on the Lord Combermere ……

…. and then, given the rich and colourful history of Barbados, could it be proven that it was only “whites” were onboard ….

… take ROK’s comment likening “black” men to mere cows …… could any Bajan (of whatever colour) who was appalled by this odious comparison prevail upon the GOB to protect them against this type of racial discrimination because it is protecting ROK’s freedom of speech?

These finer points of law always stump me and that’s why I am not a lawyer.

PiedPiper, I trust that as a paragon of rectitude, you will not be guilty of the very crime of which you accuse others..

Will you cite any instance where the BU host David has responded to a direct question with a personal attack?

Jamaican LIB, hope your sojourn amongst the canucks turns out better than at BU. LOL!

  281. cq8

Ricky didn’t call HH a racist. He said he had no business writing what he did on the internet. Read HH’s article at BU. It is shameful for the senior advisor to the PM to write what he did.

It is also shameful that HH chose to write what he did at a website that say a murdered tourist is “white trash”.

    PiedPiper,

In case you missed my previous post in response to yours of 10.57 this am, where you made a seriously damaging allegation, I will repeat:

PiedPiper, I trust that as a paragon of rectitude, you will not be guilty of the very crime of which you accuse others..

Will you cite any instance where the BU host David has responded to a direct question with a personal attack?

  284. Inkwell

How frigged up is this blogsite? I post a comment today at 6.38 p.m and it appears before the post to which I was responding, PiedPiper time stamped 10.57 a.m, one at 4.29 a.m, and another at 11.20 a.m.

Is that so that PiedPiper can claim he didn’t see it?

  285. PiedPiper

Do you mean the part about never getting a straight answer out of them, including David? Just ask Jack Bowman whether he has ever gotten a straight answer our of David about why allowed comments like those of Negroman to stand on his blog, even after a number of people repeatedly brought it to his attention.
Months ago, when that post first appeared I appealed to David’s sense of decency, after all we were speaking of a woman who had been bludgeoned to death, I asked him to remove the post on several ocassions and he never even replied to the requests.

  301. Inkwell

It seems that PiedPipers’ calumnious post of September 2nd, 10.47 a.m, has been removed to save his “face”.

Perhaps in future, he will be less cavalier with the truth.

  302. PiedPiper

First of all boredickey, I am a female, been a female since the day I born. Secondly, whichever post you are referring to, why would anyone remove it? I have no sway, power or connection to BFP, I am just an ordinary poster to this forum. Lastly, I have no idea what you are getting at.

  303. Inkwell

    PiedPiper,

Sincere apologies for making the assumption that you are male.

Perhaps you can ask the people at BFP what happened to your post of September 2nd at 10.57 a.m. In that post, you claimed, inter alia, that the host of Barbados Underground was known to respond to direct questions with personal attacks and I challenged you to cite one instance.

Refer to my post of 6.38 p.m and your reply of 7.35 p.m, where you avoided the question.

Now suddenly your original post, that of 10.57 a.m has disappeared. How fortuitous.

If you cannot cite an instance to support your allegation, being a person of high morals, you should do the decent thing, withdraw the accusation and offer an apology for maligning the blog host.

Or, of course, you can tell me to piss off.

  304. PiedPiper

Inkwell, please accept my apology for inadvertently referring to you as “boredicky”. I have searched for the post in question and I can’t find it either. It would appear that it has been deleted and while I can’t pretend to know what is inside the heads of BFP staff, it would appear that it may have been a wise decision, if I, in fact, included David in the group of individuals who are prone to venom-spewing attacks. If I did, it was not my intention. The gist of my post was that David allowed these statements to stand and up until very recently, had done nothing to try to curb them. You are right in that David has never, to my knowledge, personally attacked anyone.

  305. oh come on

i hear comments about bu being rascist but i need to ask this. if they were 25 ppl out of 500 on a blog that was gay and said they supported homosexuality and had homosexual opinions , would you say the site was a gay site? ( i used homosexuality as an example) or if 4% of the 300,000 bajans have racist opinions whether if dem black or white does it make barbados as a country a racist country?

i believe that the views expressed on a blog are solely the opinion of its contributors and not necessarily the views of the sysop or the blog as a whole. if a white man was to come on BU and post racist towards whites would u come to the conclusion that all white ppl are racists towards black ppl?

i find some ppl too sensitive

  306. Living in Barbados

By saying nothing the moderator can be saying volumes. Is he giving tacit assent to the comments? The other thing to consider is when and how he intervenes in threads, and then to assess why he intervenes sometimes and not other times. Whether the matter is racist sentiment, profane language or other things that could be seen as clear turn offs may not be as important. If his stance is free sppech, then he may appear conisitent by letting all expressions flow. But why then seeks to control or channel any voices? BU commentators give a clear impression that they have at least as much control over the blog as does the moderator. Maybe that is good community politics.

  307. Inkwell

    PiedPiper,

Apology and explanation accepted. Your 10.57 a.m post has magically reappeared, if you want to recheck what you said.

All’s well that ends well. BFP will most likely not respond to me, but perhaps someone can ask them why posts are not appearing in chronological order. It makes following threads an extremely frustrating chore. Who needs more frustration?

  308. PiedPiper

Inkwell, I have recently come to the same conclusion about the “reply” system. It is very confusing, expecially when you get long discourses between two people and a “reply” button can not be found.
BFP staff asked our opinion about this before implementing it and it seemed like a good idea at the tims.

  309. Living in Barbados

@Inkwell and Pied Piper, speaking as a blogger. BFP have tried an option that allows reply to a specific commentator, so that is the first filter. Chronology is then 2nd filter. Yes, this makes harder straight time line thread, and maybe some do not realise that they are following a commentator not just a thread. WordPress have offered several ‘enhancements’ such as this and ‘polling’ comments as BU tested only to find it created other problems; like wise when BU tried splitting comments after they exceeded a large # (eg 250). Blogger.com is cruder in all senses. BFP may be assessing how the latest option works so I would urge feedback. If the cooment disappeared w/o intervention then a glitch/gremlim may be at work/play.

  310. BFP Robert not signed in

    Hello everyone.

This post and this post only is having some trouble with the comments appearing out of order.

We don’t know why, but we’re working on it with WordPress.

    Thanks for understanding.

    Robert

  311. robin hood

    @BFP
I notice you still can’t seem to get the chronological sequence organised as yet. This is making it very difficult to follow comments. Is this by choice or just by chance?

  312. ROKstar

Yet another pearl of wisdom from a BU regular

    Hopi // September 4, 2009 at 4:52 PM

@Bro ROK…..that term ‘civil war’ is yet another of whitey’s oxymorons, just like ‘aboriginal’. Any war with the white man has never been and can never be civil. The best thing for Black People to do is to separate ourselves from this plague and seek self-knowledge.

RACIAL SEPARATION is the way to go. To hell with integration which was only designed to perpetuate this parasitic system.

  315. Mugaffy Allamby

Free speech? Give me a break. I would bet that if someone went on and posted some seriously strong stuff that is against the general diatribes but in the same tone, it would be removed forthwith.

  316. Jack Bowman

    Mr. Halsall.

I don’t believe you found the time to answer my question here. Let me pose others. Do you “giggle” at the news from Mr. ROK? If not, how do you feel about what Mr. ROK said, Mr. Halsall? Should anybody on the planet “giggle” about it?

All best wishes to you, Mr. Halsall, sir, and to yours.

  317. Jack Bowman

I watched this exchange between Mr. Inkwell and Mr. Piper with wonderment. I thought it best to wait until the resolution.

Mr. Inkwell insisted on “clarifying” something. The “something” is a distinction without a difference.

If you edit a publication whereon you allow subliterate racist bigots to ramble on in a semi-incoherent subliterate racist way about violent murder, it really doesn’t matter if you take issue with the subliterate racist bigots who ramble on in a semi-incoherent subliterate racist way about violent murder.

What matters it that you allowed it. If you allowed it, you have the moral imagination of cheese, and any and all of your opinions are, frankly, cheese-like.

    Hope this helps.

    And best wishes to you.

  318. PiedPiper

    Astute as always, LIB.

  319. PiedPiper

That’s Ms. Piper to you Jack. 🙂

  320. PiedPiper

Mugaffy, how right you are…..the backbiting now in full force over there.

  321. Mugaffy Allamby

Crazy that every article on that site* degenerates into either verbal abuse or racist talk. So boring and tiresome. That blog is in serious self-destruct mode. Shame as some topic titles promised to be quite interesting. I wont visit there anymore to read or try to read between the nonsense as it were. There are far more informative and interesting blogs to read across the web while enjoying the reading at the same time.

“Surprised to see my name listed as a racist
must be that Pied Piper nutter in disguise.”

kiki: Have you ever noticed how no one ever responds to your posts either here at BFP or over at BU? This may, in fact, be one of those very rare occassions when someone actually responds to you.

People such as yourself, who are always claiming that this body is so and so and that body is so and so are grasping in the dark and making fools of yourself. I am not the poster “Ewwwww” because when I make comments I try to be as accurate as possible and NEVER would have made the claim that BU has 10-15 posters who are racists. The actual figure is more like 5-6. Also, I would never have included you as one of them beause I know you are not.
kiki, leh muh tell you something. BFP staff knows that I do not attempt to disguise my IP or my ISP which they can easily access. They know more than you could ever imagine about where posts come from. Unless “Ewwwww” was using anonymouse.org to post, they would clearly see that it is not my IP. kiki, has it ever occurred to you that the post by “Ewwwww” was actually someone from BU who was deliberately trying to create confusion?
As for the “nutter” part, you are, I suppose, entitled to your opinion but just remember kiki, no one seems to pay much attention to your opinion.

    *******************

    BFP editor says…

I confirm that PiedPiper and “Ewwwww” have different IPs, neither of them is a known proxy and they are from two different countries. That is not 100% proof that they aren’t the same person, but that is what we can see.

Mr. King, Secretary General of BANGO, has something to say. Here it is:

“I am the victim here in case you don’t understand”

“I am the victim.” Never forget it.

  332. PiedPiper

Kiki, just so we are clear. “Somebody” made a list of “suspects” from a seperate blog who were discussing the damage of slavery to the black race and labeled them racists.” You, in your infinite wisdom, have determined that I am that “suspect” with the only burden of proof being that “somebody said so”? Kiki, please feel free to come forward with a quote from any post of mine, from any blog where I have made a racist statement.
This is meant as a cautionary tale kiki, below I have posted two links for you to read and would recommend that you give them some serious thought.

    http://www.osler.com/resources.aspx?id=8684

In particular, read how the courts here have determined that the internet is considered a “broadcast medium” the same as a newspaper or radio/tv broadcast. The only reason why the particular case cited, was dismissed, was because it had not been filed with the courts within the legal time frame.

Kiki, the days when the internet were like the Wild Wild West are rapidly coming to a close and persons who persist in making unsubstantiated claims and outright lies that defame innocent people, will soon find themselves at the mercy of the courts.

    BFP Editor to kiki

We are simply not going to tolerate arguments, statements or any comments targeting any race of people. Ya wanna argue that Hitler was invoking Jewish ideologies in what he did – well that’s just a little too much for me. Take that somewhere else because it always ends up in a place that we don’t go at BFP. Your comment has not been approved.

    Thanks!

  335. kiki

I said Hitler invoked anti-jewish hate
because of the black jewish tribes

    *************

    BFP editor says,

hmmmm…. then Kiki you have to be a little more precise in your meanings when talking about such things. In context I took your statement of the Jews being the “roots for Hitler’s ideologies” to mean they were foundational participants rather than victims. In any event I accept that you did not mean what I thought you meant.

As you do say (and I paraphrase your body of work) racists come in many different flavours, shades and designs.

… Mr. Halsall, evidencing his fundamental sense of humanity, his common sense and his general intelligence, recalls Voltaire without quoting him and says this to Mr. Negroman:

“While I am always willing to fight for your (and everyone’s) right to have your say, I will not always agree with what you say…”

Mr. Negroman says this: “This country must be rid of all Indians, those from India, Pakistan, Guyana & Trinidad … The time might not be that far away where a BLACK BARBADIAN HITLER MIGHT BE NEEDED IN BARBADOS.”

Mr. Negroman is fantastic beyond belief … the gift that keeps on giving.
