What Happened To Bribery Charges Against Corrupt Barbados Police Officer – Paul Vaughn – Vaughan?

“The case against Sergeant Vaughn will be officially discontinued shortly…”

Criminal Charges Against Corrupt Cop Made To Disappear?

Back on September 18, 2008 we told you how Barbados Police Sergeant Paul Vaughan (sometimes spelled Vaughn) was charged with taking $56,500 dollars in bribes to not prosecute a pirate DVD vendor. Vaughan was also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. (BFP article: Corrupt Director Of Public Prosecutions Must Now Prosecute His Corrupt Police Friend For Accepting Bribes!!!)

We predicted at the time that the charges would fade into nothing until they died a natural death because of the special relationship between the crooked cop and the Barbados Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Charles Leacock – who in his private life is also a landlord.

Now an anonymous source who provided BFP with accurate information on multiple occasions in the past, informs us that the Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacock made an order dropping all charges against Sergeant Paul Vaughn / Vaughan about two weeks ago. The source also says that the case will by officially discontinued shortly – but ever so quietly – at an opportune time.

Although this is an anonymous source and we still caution everyone to take any anonymous claims with a grain of salt, if it turns out to be for true, it wouldn’t surprise us in the least.

Unholy Alliance: Sergeant Paul Vaughan - Vaughn (left) & Charles Leacock - Barbados Director Of Public Prosecutions

Why did Barbados Free Press predict that charges against Sgt. Vaughan / Vaughn would fade into nothing?

When one of Charles Leacock’s tenants couldn’t pay her rent, Sergeant Vaughan acted as strong arm muscle to collect the debt. As seen in the Ronja Juman case, Sgt. Vaughan would do pretty much anything to collect the money for his friend the Director of Public Prosecutions. When blocking the tenant’s car in her driveway didn’t work, Sgt. Vaughan paid a little visit to her son at school. When the tenant surrendered some jewelery, but DPP Leacock wanted more, the Sergeant conducted a middle-of-the-night terror raid on Ronja Juman’s sleeping family and then dragged her off to the police station for a vaginal search. No… Sgt. Vaughan had no expectation of finding either the back-rent money or the rental contract in Mrs. Juman’s vagina – it was all about terror, pressure and squeezing the money out of Mr. Leacock’s former tenant.

The court documents that show this to be true are posted online for all to see. You can view them in the BFP stories linked below.

Cop Charged With Accepting Bribes
Nation News, September 17, 2008

A POLICE SERGEANT who was once attached to the Copyright Infringement Unit appeared in District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with accepting bribes and perverting the course of justice.

Sergeant Paul Emmanuel Vaughn, 37, of Durette Gardens, Gemswick, St Philip, was released with a surety of $50 000 bail and has been ordered to hand over his travel documents to the court as part of his bail.

He will also be reporting to Oistins Police Station every Tuesday and Friday until his return to court on November 11.

Vaughn was not required to plead to the charge that being a member of the Royal Barbados Police Force, he did corruptly receive $56,500 for himself between December 1, 2004, and April 30, 2007, from Evadney Cindy Bushell as a fee or reward for forbearing to prosecute her for infringement of the Copyright Act.

He was also charged that with intent to pervert the course of justice, he committed a series of acts which tended to pervert the course of public justice in that he received various sums totalling $56,000 to protect Bushell from prosecution for Copyright infringement.

In May 2007, Bushell, 43, a business owner of 120 Maynards Road, St Peter, appeared before the Bridgetown Traffic Court, charged with knowingly for sale DVD copies of the movie Spiderman 3 which she knew or had reason to believe were infringing the movie’s copyright.

The wheelchair-bound woman is free on bail.

Oh no! Not another incident of criminal charges being dropped because somebody knows somebody!

Would the Attorney General please make a public statement about the status of these charges?

  2. PickUhNoise

So does this mean that he remains a police sargeant????

  3. promotion

“So does this mean that he remains a police sargeant????”

No under Barbadian custom, he will likely be promoted.

If he were a lawyer he would be apponted to the bench.

In spite of a change of Gov’t, it is business as usual.

What is this saying about Barbadian society? Who is really in charge in Barbados?

A great deal of corrupt public servants still remain in their places and the new Gov’t dare not take action against them.

Why do we bother going to the polls?

This is not news. This is an everyday happening in Barbados. Sad, isn’t it?

Good question Anon, why do bajans bother?,the answer is they are blinded by promises that are never kept, they keep believing like the christians in Jesus.

  8. cool

What happen to Ronja Juman girl?

  9. PiedPiper

It’s only sad if you are prepared to lay down and accept it. Why, why, why are Bajans so passive? On the one hand I admire the Bajan love of civility, respect for law and order but at what point do you realize that it is this cultural conditioning that has lead Bajan society to where it is today where a large percentage of the population has accepted that corruption is just “business as usual” in Barbados and that things will never change.
Take a look around the rest of the world and see what happens when blatant corruption, suppression of human rights and when people “get mad as hell, and ain’t gonna take it nuh more”! All over the world people are marching and raging in the streets, taking on the opressers who have robbed them of their rights and their dignity. And, “J”, don’t even waste your time asking me if I am advocating civil unrest in Barbados. People got to do what people got to do in order to take back what is rightfully theirs.
When a country allows itself to lose the one true thing that makes it a civilized democracy, uncompromising JUSTICE, then you may as well do away with elections and simply declare a dictatorship and be done with it.
It should be obvious to anyone by now, that the election process in Barbados is a sham. All you are doing is exchanging one set of puppets for the elite with another set of puppets for the elite.

    DLP = BLP = DLP = BLP

    Thompson = Arthur = Mottley = Thompson

Nothing changes. The day that Sgt. Vaughn was charged I said the charges would be dropped quietly later on. They only laid the charges because the lady in the wheelchair complained and she isn’t complaining anymore. She wised up that complaining against he police is unhealthy in Barbados.
