Rihanna Story Breaks Record At Barbados Free Press – Welcome To Our New Friends Around The World

Thanks to our tens of thousands of new visitors over the last 24 hours – a new world’s record at BFP with well over 40,000 new visitors in the last 24 hour period. (We’re not sure, but as we write this it looks as if we might touch 59,000 or more in the next 24 hours if the trend holds. As of yesterday evening, Barbados Free Press was the #3 WordPress blog worldwide.)

We have closed the comments on the Rihanna assault thread as requested by many of our readers.

Rihanna is always newsworthy, but she is always and will always be our girl and one of us in Barbados – an island that can seem very small at times. She has done well for herself and her country, but she probably needs a little break for the next while at home. Like the vast majority of Bajans will do, when we see her we shall do our utmost to let her walk around without being bothered.

So many of you coming for our Rihanna articles are then staying to have a look around Barbados Free Press.

Now that you are here, we hope that you will tell your friends about the ongoing battle by Bajans to strengthen our democracy and to free our country from the systemic corruption and oppression that has been a quiet truth in Barbados for so many years.

We love our country and many of us are working hard to forge a better life for our children and the coming generations. To do that, we must start paying attention to political and individual freedoms – and especially the rule of law that is so carelessly disregarded by the political and business elites who have run Barbados for so many generations. We must also regain freedom of the press and do our part to keep our island home from becoming nothing but concrete and pavement.

Please read some of our articles and talk with your friends around the world about the struggle for rights and freedoms in Rihanna’s home island of Barbados.

Thanks,

Marcus, Shona, George, Cliverton, Robert & Auntie Moses

Dear BFP you wrote “an island that can seem very small at times.”

Really? This is not my experience. You need to get out and about in Barbados a bit more, meet some new people, of all ages, races, professions, religions etc. set yourself a target of speaking to one new person a week and really getting to know one new person each year.

Your life in Barbados will be transformed.

  2. J

Or as Michelle Obama’s mother used to tell her “you need to get out of your comfort zone”

  3. J

We need to remind Rihanna that she is a Combermere girl. Chris Brown probably could not even be a yard boy at Combermere.

She needs to find a man of her intelligence and class.

Just because he is an American pop celebrity does not mean that he is good enough for her.

  4. J

Rihanna is an intelligent young woman.
She has options. She is well educated enough that she can train to become a teacher, doctor, lawyer, engineer, professor or anything else she wants to be.

    Chris Brown has few options.

His are pop singer/dancer thug or jailbird.

I think Chris is jealous becasue he KNOWS that Rihanna is more intelligent than he is.

What is she doing with that idiot anyhow?

  5. sauer kraut

Congrats on setting your new record. Any blog that gets more than 100 comments on a single post is obviously doing something right. Keep up the good work because this is the court of public opinion, not a court of law.

I came just to read the comments. Some of which were funny, some of which were on point and some of which were just plain pathetic.

Best wishes to Rihanna. Anyone have photo’s of the faces of either Rihanna or Chris “the weenie” Brown?

btw – the “herpes” rumor is silly. There are several different types of herpes and the comments make clear that many people think of herpes only as genital. In fact, genital herpes is a fairly recent creature to the sexual landscape. Until the late 70’s, the only herpes of which people were aware were the various types of cold sores which appear around the lips mostly during the winter. The cold sores continue to be the most common type of herpes, but like the genital type, there’s no cure for that virus. Nor can anything really control their appearance/disappearance.

    you misplace your compass Adrian?

  7. Hants

The name Rihanna will continue to get you a lot of hits.

However it does detract from the serious political and economic issues that this blog is normally focused on.

  8. oldrooster

Many Commments are sometimes evidence of 3 or 4 people discussing. Not showing overall visitors.

  9. Len White

It is the right of all within a democratic society to seek answers to the issues which arise, and to flush out those which may need to be brought to the market place of ideas. However, I must say that you do a tremendous disservice to Barbados and its reputation in the international community with your flip and irresponsible characterizations of my wonderful homeland, especially given the reach of your medium. Like any country on this beautiful planet, Barbados has room for improvement, but to demonize your country for the benefit of scoring some cheap quantitative increase in blog numbers is indicative of a mindset which either is cruelly callous or woefully ignorant of the impact of such characterizations.

“within 100 days of forming a government the DLP will introduce Integrity Legislation. A Ministerial Code and Conflict of Interest rules will be declared immediately.

    @ Len White

Out of the “demonization” will come change for the better.

Barbados is a paradise for most people but it is important in a functioning democracy to expose and discuss corruption.

You eva weh in a rum shop yet?

  12. Len White

You miss my point completely. The issue is not whether corruption should be rooted out or oppression stopped, but how. I refuse to believe that Bajans cannot find constructive ways to combat these issues through the strengthening of existing institutions or by creating new ones. One does not need to visit a rum shop to recognize the legitimacy of your argument, although it could be helpful, but to return my earlier submission; I remain unconvinced that there is such a deterioration in the quality of governance in Barbados that there is a need to portray the country to the world in a manner which only serves to reduce it to the level of a Zimbabwe or Myanmar. The use of words such as corruption and oppression in particular conjure up images which are less than flattering.

    BFP says,

You are aware that before they were elected, the current government promised to “IMMEDIATELY” implement a code of conduct for Ministers that would prohibit public officials from receiving gifts from government contractors? You are aware that the government promised to “immediately” prohibit government officials from issuing contracts to themselves or companies they own?

    Go back to sleep.

The people who operate BFP have a matter which has been adjucated by the Barbados Supreme Court and the Privy Council. The matter is a family dispute as to who is entitled to the lands (and money) and how much of a former sugar estate.

The BFP folk are unhappy with the verdict(s).

People on the losing side of legal matters are invaribly unhappy; and so it is with the “good” folk at BFP

Consequently the mission of BFP is to make Barbados look bad because they are unhappy with the verdicts of 2 legitimate courts.

The matter is now before a court in Ontario.

    Barbados is NOT Myamar.

    BFP says,

You’re correct! Our thugs are much more subtle. Of course, for seven months the BLP blog did link to a blog that threatened to murder a political rival. That wasn’t so subtle!

  17. Len White

Thank you for your advice. Before I go to get my zzzzzzzzzzzs however, I want you to understand that my position has nothing to do with partisan politics, but is held primarily out of a sense of concern for the image of a country which I love. I reiterate that words are powerful, and when one talks about oppression, and its relation to the identity of a nation, the potential for damage to that country’s image in the international community cannot be overstated. By your own statements you have professed a love for Barbados which I will not question, but I hope you will find it possible to understand my viewpoint. I submit to you that to invite visitors to your blog (many of whom may be first-timers), to join you in your crusade against corruption and oppression in Barbados, only serves to poison the image of a country whose international reputation is first class. Maybe by being an exeptionally squeaky wheel, you will get the grease, but the car is going to be so damaged that the wheels may not be of any use. Goodnight!

BFP Marcus, Shona, George, Cliverton, Robert & Auntie Moses
are the owners of this blog.

We should thank them for giving us the opportunity to use their blog.

We don’t have to agree with them.

I have take licks from them because I am a partisan and uncompromising DLP supporter but they allow me and the rest of you to blog.

Why should we care what their agenda is when they allow us to carry out ours?

I totally believe that Hants is an alter-ego of the BFP blog owners. Nobody is so blindly in the tank reasoning the nonsense he does legitimately.

This is a FREE blog. I can be serious or write tongue in cheek ,oops, write de same shjt yuh does talk after a few Owings Special white but most of all we are for the most part Bajans who feel “connected”.

So write FREEly Anon. In Tony Marshall’s english…..Master’s day is completed.

Succintly put. In just 5 sentences. Cant understand why BWWR thought you were ‘a man without brains’.

    Hants:
Why should we care what their agenda is when they allow us to carry out ours?
    ****************************

Huh? Just because we aint banned yet, does not mean we are allowed to carry out an agenda!

  23. PiedPiper

Such petty small-mindedness. BFP is no different from any other blog in that they post stories and items that they feel are relevant or of interest to them. That is their right.
As posters, you have the right to express your opinions and either agree or disagree or even add to the story if you have additional information. If you disagree so vehemently with BFP’s position on anything whether it be politics, social issues, or whatever, you also have the right to choose not to come to the blog. No one is forcing you to.
If all you can contribute is the repetition of 2nd, 3rd and 4th hand gossip which has no foundation, then what is the point of your contribution?
If I said right, here and now, that I am a member of the Knox family and one of the members of Keltruth blog, would that make it the truth? I just don’t see the point in posting to a blog if the best you can do is just perpetrate a myth through gossip.
Pat, you are no one to be speaking of “carrying out an agenda” as you have demonstrated clearly that you certainly had an agenda with your pal BWWR….cough…..WMWR I mean.

  24. Rihanna's picture

    BFP,
I have Rhanna’s picture, post-blows. Brown really did her in – real good.
Should she go back with him, she would be foolishly suicidal.

If you want the picture, I can post it to you.
    Rihanna’s picture

  25. Rihanna's picture

There is no way she could have appeared at the Grammy’s with such a punished face.(In fact, she can’t appear on stage for a while)
Brown should be sent to jail. I beleive that is where he will end.
This was more than a man sharing “a few blows”. The man’s a savage.

  26. reluctant nonbeliever

I can see why BFP would be pleased at getting so much traffic in the past few days.

But I really don’t imagine for a moment that the vast majority of new visitors will have the slightest interest in any of the other articles – those things that matter to us who live here on this little island. It’s Rihanna that draws them, that they’re interested in: nothing else.

They’ll just read the stuff on her, then move swiftly on…

    ****************

    BFP says,

The majority of the new readers do just move on. That is the nature of the web. But right now about 37% of new (never before here) readers click through on one of the linked articles and read.

And that, my friend, will be tens of thousands over the next three or four days.

  27. Cortes

Is it true the smart Rihanna, gave the stupid ghetto boy herpes?

  28. bajangal

When Rihanna first started going out with this person I checked his website………..full of snakes, skulls and bones etc. He too has tatoos of this nature. She started tattoing her body after connecting with him. She is young and lacking in discernment no matter how much “book” education she may have. North America is not Barbados. It’s a big bad world out there. Going in a similar direction as Britney Spears did. She needs guidance.

As far as Barbados is concerned I share in BFP’s sentiments. Chose to leave Bim because of the corruption there.

That’s my two cents on the issue.

  29. annie

    =============================================
You summed up BFP in a nutshell. Blog appears intent on bringing down our beloved Barbados for selfish satisfaction.

  31. Hants

These Rihanna posts are making this blog similar to “The National Enquirer”.

  32. Anon

I am sickened by BFP because it is so obvious they try to make Barbados look like the worst country on Earth, then have the unmitigated gall to sugarcoat it with false pretenses of patriotism.

  33. reality check

    Anon

every country has a degree of corruption and cronyism.

It just happens to be endemic in Barbados and only exposure and discussion will ever have a chance of changing it.

Rather than returning to fetal position or a defensive posture of seeing, hearing and speaking no evil, you could use your energies to change Barbados for the better.

Barbados has such a great opportunity to meet the challenge for future generations that pretending everything is okay won’t help solve the systemic rot that is permitted to survive and thrive in a culture of short term greed and grab.

BFP is dead on when it says “we must start paying attention to political and individual freedoms – and especially the rule of law that is so carelessly disregarded by the political and business elites who have run Barbados for so many generations”

  37. As an example of widespread worldwide ‘unacceptable activity’ and also of wodespread worldwide culmination in this by the general citizens being ‘up-in-arms’, the latest events re the House of Lords exhibits that Barbados is not alone.

Wall Street bonuses, ridiculous payments when companies make losses, is another that President Obama is now addressing, cheered on by the average citizens.

Today is ‘man in the street’ day.

The global socio-economic landscape cannot afford to support to cozy the few elites with unearned and indeed unnecessary luxuries.

Back to reality, back to the future.

Dear BFP you wrote ” Of course, for seven months the BLP blog did link to a blog that threatened to murder a political rival. ”

And at some point you ran a story from a a blog of a fella who turned out to be a white supremicist.

    So w’a ya saying den????

    ***********************

    BFP says,

When we linked to the article in question, we had no idea that the author had written an anti-african american article years in the past, but when it was brought to our attention one day after we linked to his blog, we immediately took it down.

Contrast that with seven months of linked articles by the BLP blog AFTER they were notified. Of course, that was at the same time that Dr. Duguid confirmed that death threats had been made from his computer at Parliament.

Absolutely no comparison at all, J. And you know it.

  41. Jaybe

I think it is horrible for you to use the picture of the baby at the top of your page for your own political agenda. Stop putting words in his mouth when he’s too young to agree or disagree with you.

    BFP says,

Citizens wanting to know why a whole family was wiped out is not a political agenda: we have been asking under two different political regimes.

The rights of citizens to know they and their loved ones are safe is not a political agenda – IT IS A HUMAN RIGHT.

  42. J

And Jaybe when I asked BFP to write something about the Great Carew’s death and the flooding at Weston, and the blame the victim sermon preached by Rev. Cuke — BFP which is usually so prolific — told me to write the article myself. And yet have kept my questions about the Weston flood and the Great Carew’s death in permanent moderation.

I suspect that I am mashing BFP’s family toes.

So ITAL for some, but for others no ITAL at all.
