Bajan Legacy

Legacy

A young mother stands on an empty beach
As the horizon takes the sun out of reach
And she cries… despair in her eyes

She looks down at her baby boy
And in a moment that should be filled with joy,
She weeps…. Oh she weeps

This is what she cries:
“What is left for my children?
In this island they call home
Their future squandered by their parents,
Fields and hills that are not their own.
Systems and structures of oppression
Built through political abuse
Built by my selfish generation
What is left for my children?”

She sees land that is taken, by government decree
Rezoned and sold for even more money
And she cries… despair in her eyes

A new garbage dump where the land can’t support
Continued to be built despite the experts’ report
Oh she weeps…oh she weeps

Money for educational books and for tools,
Wasted on flyovers her son will never use
Political favours and big kickbacks
Paid out for enormous government contracts
And she cries…oh she cries

And for people who die in our hospital room
Simply for a lack of a mop and a broom
For our culture that wages war on respect
For our seniors treated with total neglect
Oh she weeps… oh she weeps

This is what she cries:
“What is left for my children?
In this island they call home
Their future squandered by their parents,
Fields and hills that are not their own.
Systems and structures of oppression
Built through political abuse
Built by my selfish generation
What is left for my children?”

So look at your daughter and look at your son
In our hands are the lives of their generation
We can’t work for ourselves out of want and of greed
We must build a nation where they can succeed
We must… oh we must

We must teach our children what matters most
A pride in our nation without wanton boast.
Love and respect for our native land
Freedom and equality for every man
Oh we must…oh we must

And this is what I ask:
“What is left for our children?
In this island they call home
Their future can’t be squandered by their parents
Fields and hills must be their own.
Systems and structures built for their success
Built through love and unity,
Built by my generation
This is what must be
This is for our children.”
