We Love Hans and Eva Rausing!

Hans and Eva own the most expensive home on Barbados. About three months ago they ran into a little trouble when Eva tried to smuggle some heroin and cocaine into the American embassy in London. We did up an article and BFP reader Reality Check and some others came to their defense saying that the Rausings had done much for Barbados and we should therefore cut them some slack.

Fair enough. We made a reply at the time and we think it is still valid. So here it is again, with this preface: If the Rausings can get into a healthy state of mind and body, and after they are finished in the British courts, we in Barbados should welcome them again.

The Brits have finally charged them with the drugs… story here and here.

As a side note, I went to a family function last week and who should appear but a cousin who cheated on her husband two years ago. The husband forgave her after a year and took her back, mostly for the sake of the children but also for the sake of the larger family.

I didn’t want to give her a hug, but I did. For the husband. For the children. For the family.

So she is back on probation, but back just the same.

It should be the same with the Rausings. After they have done their penance, we should welcome them back on Barbados. As we said in our first article when Eva was arrested for being an idiot…

“We don’t know much about the Rausings. If they are the kind of people who really have a heart for others then we wish them well. If this causes them to rethink their lives and how much good they could do if they only became serious about the opportunities and resources that God has given them, we wish them well too.

Some folks take a long time to grow up, an some never do. And by “growing up” I mean being responsible and caring and trying to do the best one can every day.

But when you are fool enough to take crack and heroin into the US Embassy in a post-9/11 world… you have to take some heat!

So we’ll forgive them, but they gotta take the heat, fix themselves up and then do something with their lives if they want our respect.

A big hello to KT and I hope you got what I sent. Marcus

Your family business is private until you publish it, but I gotta say you are coming off here as being sanctimonious in the extreme.

Your cousin’s infidelity is between her and her husband unless they bring you into it, and your holding grudges two years later just makes you sound like an ass.

Get off your high horse. To err is human, and we all make mistakes.

It seems that you’re proudly parading yours.

  2. Equity

How did that part about the infidelity come in? That’s not our business…nor yours.

    BFP says,

You missed the point Equity. Marcus was using the infidelity of one of his own family members as an example that once some penance has been done, folks should be taken back into the family. The same is true for these people who are self-destructing on drugs. Let them sort things out, get clean and then be welcomed back to Barbados.

Too complex for you, I think.

  3. Equity

Maybe too complex for me…does this hold true for Jah Cure too? And that fidelity of a spouse is owed to cousins? Get real, BFP!

  4. Is the end near?

This is one of the most pathetic and uninteresting posts on BFP. What’s happening? Are you guys getting tired of maintaining this blog and looking to get out?

I have to disagree with you, Bajan, sanctimonious is not the correct word. My dictionary definition says “making an unpleasant or unjustified display of piety and virtue; pretending to be holy; hypocritically pious”.

There is nothing in this BFP opening blog which warrants this criticism, I think. There is no hint of pretence, nor is any of it unpleasant, unless perceived to be so by some readers here. When I first started posting on the Internet, only a couple of years ago on a UK teachers’ website, and expressing my opinions (it was an Opinion Forum, for goodness sake!), I was immediately accused of being sanctimonious old s*d! At the time I did not fully appreciate the meaning of the word, which was when I first looked it up in the dictionary. When I told my wife she was highly amused and told me they had got it exactly right! We all had a good laugh about it.

If the unpleasantness, pretence and hypocracy is not there, then these opinions are very necessary, in this nation of declining moral standards. I applaud the BFP for holding honest and sincere opinions about the Rausings, and any of our family or friends. And remember, it is the sin we are condemning, not the sinner.

BFP sooner or later the truth will out.

I hope an equal amount of sympathy and forgiveness is given to Paros around bridgetown with whom the Rausings share an addiction.

Personally I care more about the Paros cause dem is one ah we.

At least give a Paro a dollar next time you walk over one in town.

Whittaker is calling on the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration to shed some light on what the Urban Development Commission and the Rural Development Commission were doing during their time in office.

This is going to be very interesting.

    Forensic audits soon done.

From my “sanctimonius” position here in Canada,
how come after 14 years of “Phenominal progress to First world status ?”, Barbados got so many poor people.

    Wunna forget dhum?

  8. Hants

Moderating me again. wha i do now?

I will say it again. How come so much poverty in Barbados after 14 years of “progress?”

    BFP says,

    Hi Hants…

please remember it is not WE who put your comments aside to be looked at, it is the PC that does that.

As to the poverty… what poverty are you talking about? Gline Clarke, Dale “big yacht” Marshall, Noel Lynch, Mia, Owen, Liz Thompson… what poverty you talking about? No poverty there! 🙂

They are not Bajans but have been given the opportunity of living here. They should be throughly searched on arriving as they will soon become convicted drug offenders, regardless of what they own or what they have ‘ done ‘ for us.

I came across an article put out by Verdun House that the Rausings have donated $8 million since its opening and they are the single largest cash donor to that institution.

While they may be screwing up their own lives, at least they have been contributing directly to give assistance to those seeking treatment for addictions.

Perhaps they should be welcomed back to Barbados and encouraged to seek help through the same Verdun House.

  12. Hants

Beefcake says “Rausings have donated $8 million since its opening.

Small price to pay for the freedom to travel in and out of Barbados without scrutiny.

Columbian druglords support entire villages for similar privilages and protection.

  13. Littleboy

Give money…lots of money and all transgressions are forgiven!!!
What the heck am I reading???
Rausing ( a rich paro) gave money to assist with the renovation of Arlington House, and the tour guides proudly mention it while visitors tour; but the Speightstown paros are shooed away from that property.
Hypocrisy is too good a word to waste on my fellow countrymen!!!
I wonder if the Royal Barbados Police would search “Greensleeves” (Rausing’s mansion) or “Nelson Gay” (the other property his sister-in-law occupies) on suspicion of drugs?

  14. ru4real

All charges have been dropped against Mr and Mrs Rausings.

Eva and Hans K are good people, no matter what “The Sun” or any other publications try and accuse them of.

Yes, they have done bad things. No, they are not bad people. They have been battling with addiction since their teens, and they have 4 young children. They keep their estate and lives as private as possible to protect their children, who have received kidnapping threats in the past. So the next time you walk past the beautiful, walled Greensleeves, remember: They are not who they are by choice.
