Constitutional Vote Called Off!

We have to ask… Can this government make a real plan, or is everything done by chicken entrails at the full moon?

The Monty Python crew in all their glory couldn’t have staged this any better!

THE REFERENDUM ON A REPUBLIC will not now take place at the same time as the next general election.

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Mia Mottley said that while Government remained committed to having a referendum, a decision had been taken to postpone such a vote following concerns raised by the Electoral & Boundaries Commission (EBC).

“In light of a number of concerns raised by EBC chairman Philip Serrao and after more in-depth consultation over the past two days, Government has decided not to proceed at the time of the general election with a referendum on whether a Barbadian should be the country’s Head of State,” Mottley told the SUNDAY SUN.

Last Sunday on Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks On Sundays, she said Barbadians would get to vote yes, or no, on whether or not the country becomes a republic, whenever they voted in the next general election.

Yesterday, Serrao confirmed that the EBC had advised Government that the electoral process could be “compromised” by trying to undertake a joint vote at this time.

“I have indicated to Government that after careful consideration I am satisfied that the management of the entire electoral process could be seriously compromised by any attempt to hold simultaneously, a general election and referendum at this time,” he said in a statement…

What a complete load of nonsense mottley was flying up in our faces with, it is just yet another distraction another piece of smoke screen and fireworks politics being tried by she and her party of goons.

This is yet another example of mismanaged events in the Barbadian landscape, It certainly appears to me that this blp is devoid of ideas and corrupt to the very core a tired party of misfits headed by a thief.

When mottley could hoist this news upon the goodly taxpayers of this nation as a case of take or leave it politics, with no regard to the voting norms of this island but in her warped disgusting sick mentality to distract and confuse the people at election time, this is as about as disgusting and as dishonest as it can get, masterminded by a moraless beast and bastard.

Now tell me where else, and in what other part of the world a cabinet member can be this dishonest, and this much of a misfit in so many various roles as minister, that it could still maintain a job as minister?
This latest example is clearly one that ought to make it realise that it needs to the honourable thing, and it ought to resign with immediate effect, this is a poor example to be setting and failing having it resign. I am calling on the PM to fire it instantly for bringing the creditabilty of his cabinet into question, yet another example of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

It is with much regret that I state that mottley needs to go, or to be fired not only for this blunder but so to for her inept handling of the Ministry of Culture where when she was the minister she installed a whole batch of lesbian friends to run the affairs of CBC and they did so in great style with great losses at the expense of the taxpayers of Barbados, Edutech another multi million dollar fiasco that is yet to deliver any goodness to our children now it is being revemped to curtail the ongoing losses, the CWC fiasco where our misfit created a system where Pakistanis where asked to send their passports to India to secure a visa, think about that, two war torn countries being asked to resolve their differences for the sake of this inept clown mottley, then we had the home of ICC Dubai being told to courier their passports to the UK for Visas only problem is that the people of Dubai are not allowed by law to ship their passports around by DHL, FEDEX etc, just another example of its inability as a minister of cabinet.

This reversal surely must beg the question just when will Owing react to his various ministers gaffs, and how will he react?
This is no trivial matter because had this event been allowed to happen it would have hit at the very core of honesty in politics, this was a direct attempt to side track our democracy in this country and it ought to be addressed in head on manner and it mottley must be fired, failing to so will brand Owing and the rest of the blp as kidnappers of our treasured and valued democracy.

“I have indicated to Government that after careful consideration I am satisfied that the management of the entire electoral process could be seriously compromised by any attempt to hold simultaneously, a general election and referendum at this time,” he said in a statement.

Among the main concerns raised were the physical and human resources to conduct the joint exercise.

“Instituting parallel voting to accommodate the referendum would cause serious congestion in some polling stations and put significant strain on limited personnel and physical resources, between the 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. voting period, with the potential to compromise the right of some Barbadians to vote.

“In addition, election laws require a ballot paper to be in a particular form, and the addition of a referendum would require separate ballot papers and boxes, additions that could confuse voters and shift the attention of election officials from their primary purpose of conducting a general election,” he said.

    Concerns

In a telephone interview, Mottley said Government acknowledged the concerns of the EBC chairman and had decided to defer any referendum vote at this time.

“Given these concerns, and notwithstanding the fact that we recognise the significant cost saving that could be achieved by holding a referendum on the same day as the general election, we feel compelled to accept the recommendations of the chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” she said.

“Consequently, Government has decided that it will not proceed with the matter as a single process. However, this Government remains committed to the principle of having a Barbadian as the Head of State.”

  3. Wishing in Vain

This matter is simply not a laughing matter it hits at the very core of our democracy.

This was a vile attempt to confuse the voters of Barbados at election time, to corrupt the vote and hope it favoured them.

I say quite clearly that this worthless beast mottley needs to be fired and FIRED NOW Owing, you need to act with haste and show the public you were not part of her scam to railroard our democracy, this is one time you will get my full unwavering support, she needs to be shown the door with speed.

Our democracy is more vital and valued than mottley and we need to save it from being corrupted.

  4. BFP

    Please, Wishing In Vain

This IS a laughing matter. It is so absurd that the sovereign government of Barbados announced a referendum on becoming a Republic (after years of flying trial balloons) and then called it off two days after the announcement!

    This is hilarious.

Come on WIV, tell us the truth… Is Mottley really working for the Dems?

    😉

  5. Wishing in Vain

It certainly can be perceived that way after the announcement by Mr. Thompson in Toronto and then Owing got up and rehashed the identical thing the next day, the grandstanding by her in the house of assembly with the ASSCOLL issue and having let Mr. Thompson humiliate her and her party in no small way, the second hand feeble attempts at correcting the ills of the cost of living, the issue of vending permits it all seems very strange indeed it makes you think.

I still maintain that this situation needs to be seriously addressed as it strikes at the very core of our freedom and our democracy and this is not healthy to us the citizens of this island.

  6. Wishing in Vain

We all know her to be annoyed and frustrated with the blp but just how far she is annoyed is to be seen.

She has been shafted in no small way so to Hammy Lashley, Rawle Eastmond, Rommel Marshall, George Payne, Liz Thompson,Joe Edghill, it will be a wait and see game if Lashley can be so hand to mouth that he seeks the peoples support for the blp after his blistering at the hands of Owing, surely he must have a backbone and cannot take those continued insults and contiue to run, this is true for so many of them as listed above.

  7. Hants

It is a “mistake?” to have a vote on “Becoming a Republic” the same day as a general election.

It should be debated and all the details published and broadcast so all citizens can understand what they are voting for.

Anyhow BFP. Try and keep discussion about Earthquakes going. I hope that Government will now include Earthquake preparedness in the Disaster plan.

Think about Hant. two positives for the current government fighting it’s unpopularity, a massive wish for change and to keep several of it’s sitting members out of prison, The referendum for republic status was well recieved, a vote for it could translate into a good feel vote for the BLP, or simply this new Ballot will result in confusion and lead to unintended votes for the BLP, or a spoil vote which will not count. Low turn out or votes cast is more likely to benefit the BLP.
1: we have changes to the constituency bounderies
2: we are to expect a change to the Ballot paper that can lead to confusion in the BLP’s favour.

ha ha ha ha ha i wanted to call into the programme under the pretext of seeking information for my son’s school project on what are the times that Barbadians traditionally fly kites. I would have then ask for more specifics on this propose doubling of a referendum vote with and actual vote. i.e. how is the Ballot to be presented, will there be bipartisan consultation in parliament on the best way to approach this never before done process? etc. Remember kite flying is pasttime of Mia’s like the Homosexual debate, and the discovery of land in Guyana.
    ====================================

Either Mia Mottley was doing what she is well know for re. Flying political Kites, or this is really proof that this woman is not nearly half has informed as some think. This should have be very obvious to anyone, let alone Mia.

  10. Wishing in Vain

Or this is really proof that this woman is not nearly half has informed as some think. This should have be very obvious to anyone.

I have been saying for somewhile now that mottley expells a lot of empty hot air and it is only now that you are coming to grips with this fact of life, there is nothing that it likes more than a mic in front of it and it goes off in a trance in its own world but not that a single sentence means anything of any substance so long as it can keep talking, we listened to it last call in show and was let in utter amazement how someone could speak so much and say so little, absolutely amazing.

Its mission is to deceive and carry on lying to the masses in the hope the lies will catch and grow.

In earlier days we would describe it as a blow hard, this is a blow hard with purely a large volume of reserved hot air.

The people of Barbados should thank Albert Brandford, for going on vacation. His vacation will be our vacation from him and his partisan articles, and as he goes, here are a few comments on his last column.

    http://www.nationnews.com/life/317797697366391.php

Albert is attempting to salvage the reputation, of Ishmael Roett mp BLP St.Micheal Central, as a Speaker of any note. The facts… Albert tells a different tale to the one that you and Roett would like publish.

The lower house didn’t just get raucous, and members didn’t just start to demonstrate behavior that does not even befit the lowliest rum shop. The truth is that during the time of Ishmael Roett mp BLP St.Micheal Central we have had to deal with some of the most embarrassing behavior by sitting members, it was during his term that Owen Arthur lamented the level of debate in the chamber, It was during his term that Rommel remind us that he was born in the gutter by the way he let into Masscol’s Mother, and what of the back and forth between Prescod and Liz Thompson? Trust me Albert we do understand the need for you to make a member of the opposition involvement in less than exemplary behavior, the focus of all that is wrong in the lower house. Ishmael Roett mp BLP St.Micheal Central will be known for being the weakest presiding officer and the most partisan to date. Please enjoy your vacation, and rest assured that the people of Barbados intend to enjoy your absence. 😀

  13. Fred

I know that Jimmy Serrao has had his share of run ins with this beast called Mottley and the other one called Liz Thompson to the extent that they summoned him to a meeting to tell him how they wanted their boundaries altered to assist them in winning their seats and he had to advise the PM that he would not tolerate this type of interference in his job as Chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

So I am not the least bit surprised by his shooting down the wild disgusting comments of Mottley and to have shown her up for what she is simply a disgusting, dishonest liar with no morals.

He maybe a strong party loyal but he was not prepared to waiver to pander to the wishes of the likes of Mottley simply for the sake overriding our freedom of choice and our DEMOCRACY.

When one notices actions such as these it brings into question the motives and the reasons for these actions and on recent evidence his tampering of Constitutional matters it makes for a serious questioning of motives!!

  14. cherry2enpowered

    Hurray for good common sense.

  15. observing

Is it just me or is Mottley consistently acting/talking “out of turn” or at the very least “out of step” in recent times???? No-confidence motion, referendum, prices, Hardwood…..

  16. Wishing in Vain

You are correct on your reasoning, she has suddenly awoken from her slumber and wants to out do ASSCOLL sadly each time in recent times she has blundered and goofed, these are test mouthings to see they can find something that the electorate links with, to hopefully have an issue that there is common ground, as is presently the case they have nothing working in their favour at this time and are struggling.

  17. reality check

    BFP

the process used by the BLP is much more sophisticated than interpreting chicken entrails. It involves flying trial
balloons and wetting ones fingers to see which way the wind is blowing.

The fact that the Nation News would actually waste precious space to spout more nonsense when Mia flatulates is proof that they are a rag or are being paid as sanitation workers.

  18. Kim Young is well known BLP member

This Brass tacks sunday is a farce just like the Speaker of the house decided to wear his political hat on the matter of the no-confidence, Kim Young is also finding it difficult to follow suite. She is trying to trip up a young lady who called into to speak about not only following the Standing orders in Austrailia and Canada but also how these countries treat too the 4 th estate.

The young lady asked why is the no confidence motion being force now and the results of the commission of enquiry into the St.Joseph hospital is not? Poor Kim could only muster “we are dealing with the no confidence motion now” ha ha ha ha ha. These BLP hacks trying to legitimise themselves and the people would not let them. 😀

I am not even alarm at the response of the EBC, as i would have mention similar concerns a day after Mia made her her very “wordy” announcment.

..Those who are taken in by her mouthings must wonder how the so called intelligent, smart, intellectual and next PM of some Barbados can be so detail in her annoucing government intent by stating “WE” and no one thought to ask the opinion of the ECB. The question must be asked, at what point did the GoB sought the opinion of the ECB, in fact did Mr Serrao learned of the GoB intent the same way we did, and did this cause him after the fact to make known his concerns. If this is the case it can solidify the opinion that the only concideration given to making the announcement was political. Again not in the interest of the people but in their self-servicing interest.

….and are you now picking up where Kim Young Belgrave fake moderator pro BLP member, Mr. Gollop card carrying BLP member and Mia Mottley failed to gain traction?
….Mia Mottley made mention that the GoB can force Thompson to debate the no confidence motion, did you already forget this?,…..so that what we are witnessing today is the correct interpretation of the rules that say she or no one cannot force a private member to dabate his motion. Now that you and they would wish for us to forget that, and would now pretend that you are only making the way for him to so do, and this after Mia has been shamed into demonstrating that she nor the government has no such power. Let s not pretend to forget who and what words caused the delay and the insistance by the Leader of the opposition that he cannot be dictated to or force to debate his own motion.

  26. frankology

What we are seeing here are bluffs by both Thompson and Mottley. Thompson is trying to create anxiety with the BLP if he do bring the motion and Mottley is insisting that he do bring the motion. Maybe, we might hear some scenarios that might frighten the public. In any case, Mottley is trying to proof that Thompson is actually bluffing. I agree that he cannot be dictated or being force to debate his motion.

What will happen, is the public might raise questionable doubts with the delay. The outcome rests with Thompson.

  27. frankology

Why is Thompson continuing to use the 12-day rule stating it is only five days. To be honest, the motion might be on the order paper for this Tuesday’s sitting and will be referred to the following Tuesday.

  28. Anonymous

    Great photo BFP!

  29. Observing

ok, so the no-confidence motion is not on the order paper for this Tuesday. Non-existent 12-day rule or not, that is the true “start” of its Parliamentary life.

    http://www.barbadosparliament.com/hs_asbly_order_paper.php

Frankology (or anyone else), should he give in to the “forcing” of the Leader of Government Business to “bring” the motion or “verbally lay it” before Parliament?

My take is, when and only when it’s placed on the Order Paper can we then say that he’s “dilly dallying” and even so, if that is the argument, by law he has all rights to bring his Private Member’s Business when he is ready.

Granted though, the longer the dealy the greater the questions…even though the facts are still as poignant now as they were 5-6 weeks ago.

And with regards to the bluffing, it’s Mottley who’s been caught with her pants down by proclaiming that she can force the motion, and by laying a resolution to similar effect, yet now being able to do nothing.

  30. Hants

It is amazing how easy it is to be distracted.

The only thing that matters in all this is as follows.

Hardwood Housing inc, got $2million of taxpayers money because building wood houses in a factory is a great idea.

The then CEO of said company is supposed to have built 500 houses in Grenada.

Then CEO has been demoted to Technical manager.

Then CEO did work on Clyde Mascoll’s wife and brother’s property as stated by all of them in a press conference.

Arthur should have asked for Mascoll’s resignation because of the minister’s stupidity.

Of all the Contractors and builders in Barbados, Mascoll chose one with a conflict of interest in that Mr. Mascoll assisted Mr.Murrel in setting Hardwood Housing.

    I rest my case.

  35. revolting?

Mia has never looked so good although I am sure she is not that excited about who is holding her from the back?

Maybe the BLP should hire the BFP to complete their extreme makeovers?

  36. Wishing in Vain

The arrogance of the radio station and Gollop along with the woman Young was a total and dismal failure today, to the point that when Chris made his points the idiot Gollop sounded like he was ready to cry and leave the station, as for Young I would advise her not to give up her day job whatever that maybe because she was extremely poor at doing what she attemped to do today, Mr Greaves stood out heads and shoulders above them in his clear witty and precise replies on every issue, credit must also be extended to Mr David Ellis for easing Young out of the mess that she created and by his intervention to bring some sense to matters and by asking sensibles questions of Mr Greaves to which he replied and clearly showed that Mr Thompson was not delaying as Gollop and Young were trying to suggest and to which Mr Ellis agreed that Mr Thompson was within his rights to do what he was doing.

(BFP Editor’s Note: That’s quite a sentence, WIV. 169 words without a period. Come on, friend…. how about some proofreading, punctuation and paragraphs?)

Then we had the scathing attack by Mr Thompson on Young and Gollop and boy what a job he did, as per usual he was clear precise and exacting in his comments and left both Gollop and Young seeking refuge, finally we had mottley????????

I take my hat off to the contributors to todays show, they made it lively and worthy but sadly the person Young failed badly at her attempt to angle the show towards a blp slant as for Gollop he was found to be sadly lacking and in dire need of training for a show such as this one was, he lost his cool too often and appeared rattled and disorganised, but his constant input while others were speaking showed more importantly his lack of training and his lack of good manners.

  37. frankology

That is the role of neutrality, you do not sing over the same song or the same genre, you perform according to the music buddy. Now let’s get back to the issue. This have nothing to do with politics, this is a reality after his anxiety to bring the No-confidence motion and the sudden halt.

    The REAL question is:

Even if one theoretically agrees with a referendum and even a potential republic, can we the citizens and taxpayers of Barbados trust this current Cabinet to do a thorough and successful job at presenting completely, thoroughly, accurately and openly the parameters , philosophical reasoning and necessary logistical factors in bringing such a referendum about?

Due to the problems and obvious lack of thoroughness, consideration, commonsense and overall planning in any major projects to date, which has resulted in numerous problems which is bad enough, but overruns as a further insult, I say a solid NO.

Even up to last week, when for long time many were calling for a proper assessment of the QEH but main Government spokespersons e.g. Dame Bille claimed that our QEH is an excellent facility, suddenly a turnaround was made by the Minister promising a new facility.

But, were the results of an initial assessment declared at that disclosure? No. Where did his figure of $700million come from? Has this initial budget been disclosed to support the estimate? No.

And so how can we trust this administration with a fair and rational approach to any major project, including where it addresses our Constitutional makeup?

There appears to be a complete lack of proper approach to any major project. This CANNOT be blamed on civil servants, as such projects should by nature involve Cabinet to ensure philosophical soundness, Cabinet to address parameters, a senior Minister at least to address both project approach and operations and Cabinet to have regular updates as to approach and status.

So, the responsibility lies at the feet of Cabinet, for any significant errors, implementation problems and by extension, overruns.

The oft repeated allegation that the DLP does not have the members capable to run the country is therefore past laughable and into the insulting of the electorate, as this Cabinet itself has proven incapable of addressing any major issues effectively and in a manner satisfactory to bring comfort to the citizens that they are being forthright and accountable to the citizens for their actions, not as lords over the country, but as representatives of the people, for the benefit of the nation as a whole.

I hold no political affiliation, but as a common citizen, demand adequate assessment, accountability and transparency in the utilisation of the resources of this nation, which our forefathers have worked so hard to bequeath to us and which we plan to bequeath to our own descendants.

As others, I personally try to spend what funds I have as best I can in my daily life and I expect no less from our leaders in addressing our national strategy and budget to which we collectively contribute.

    Peace.

What wishing in vain has put up about Kim Young is the truth.

I joined Facebook at the invitation of a friend of mind, who introduce me to his forums which dealt with back in school times.

This friend is a genuine down to earth guy, that has demonstrated that he can hang with and get along with just about any body.

The forums for the most part where frequented by alumus of the older schools and therefore the experiences they often talked about where for the most part foreign to me, yet i still attempt to put in my two cents worth.

Most of the members ignored me which is to be expected, for they don’t know of me, but this Kim Young person immediately made me her friend (a face book concept),…and then invited me to Join the BLP facebook forum.

I declined and subsequently remove her from my friends list.

What i want to know is who came up with the format for Sunday’s Brass tacks programme?

Were all the usuall moderators not available?

How were Kim Young and Hal Gollop introduce at the beginnning of the programme

Did they sate their association with the Barbados Labour party?

I must admit that i tuned into the programme after the start, and that while the positions that all three in studio person took where partisan, we only knew of the upfront political association of One.

That Philip Greaves is known to all of Barbados as DLP member and for Deputy prime minister in a DLP government.

Was the listening public informed at the start of the show that Kim Young Belgrave and Hal Gollop are card carrying members of the Barbados Labour party? if not why not?

It was instructive to me that Stephen Lashley’s intervention to the programme among others things also accused Hal Gollop of toting the BLP position and of being the representative of the BLP to the show, an accusation that Hal Gollop attempted to deny. It was all put to rest as to his political party affiliation, when David Thompson in his intervention to the programme left no doubt that HAL GOLLOP IS INDEED A CARD CARRYING MEMBER OF THE BLP, an opinion that Hal Gollop agreed to by stating “yes as a close friend of mine you would know that”

So I got the impression that this affiliation was NOT made clear at the beginning of the programme where Mr. Hal Gollop is concern.

WAS THERE ANY DECLARATION FROM KIM YOUNG BELGRAVE ABOUT HER BLP AFFLIATION?

Sundays programme could be yet another failed attempt to hoodwink the public of Barbados.

I think we need to take a closer look at the conduct of the “Glendairy buring commission of enquiry” specifically at the actions of Hal Gollop…..

I had always wondered about the line that Hal Gollop took with his blistering attack on some of the witnesses in the “Glendairy Burning” Commission of enquiry. Now that it is clearly understood that he is a card carrying member of the BLP. What are the possibilities that his involvment in this enquiry has a behind the scenes primary role to find the prison officer that a manipulation of the facts and events of the infamous day when the prison was burned, can lead to casting blame towards, and away from Mia Mottley????

Adrian not only is this woman Young to be scolded but so to the management of VOB for thrusting her and her political views in what is supposed to be an unbiased standpoint.

They are both at fault, both are guilty of dishonesty.

She has no role to play in the role of moderator of any call in show by a station such as VOB she can apply for a job at CBC she would be very much at home there, with all the girls around.

  51. Wishing in Vain

The onus should have been placed on the radio station VOB to inform the listeners as to the true make up of the panel and the biased views of the moderator.

This is fraud being carried out by a major radio station against those that pay them to operate here.

I also want to hear what measures the PM plans to take against his inept minister for her series of blunders carried out by her over a period of time.

No it started but when Chris came on it aborted maybe, intentionally as it did not do the blp or the VOB any favours.

….I will interject here because they are others here beside WIV that share a similar view on last Sunday brass tacks. Which of the Moderators to whom you might be referring too, that you can point to conclusive evidence as I have done in regards to Kim Young Belgrave, that 100% demonstrate their partisan affiliation, an affiliation what they may have forgotten to inform the listening public of, as they sought to seen and heard as an impartial arbitrator and or contributor to a political debate which Sunday’s Brasstacks undoubtedly was?

Where is the proof of this last minute construction of a response?

    Dear VOB,
It is utterly amazing that you and your admistrators could be so warped in your judgment to setup this scam that you created today by allowing an active and working member of the ruling party to sit in the chair as moderator of your program today, I honestly believe that you owe it to all your listeners to make a public
apology for your gross misconduct and neglect for fairplay and honesty in the media.
Today’s show was poorly moderated by your moderator but it is only now I am learning exactly why you did what you did, having committed this scam it backfired in your faces in no small way.
You must give utmost respect to Mr. Greaves for enduring the show for as long as he did because had it been me I would have walked out and left you standing.
You have loss much respect in my eyes and so to in the eyes of the general public.

ALBERT BRANDFORD,…..told us in his last article that he will be on vacation (we are thankfull :D) until January ’08, can we read into this anything? Is this a sign that election will not be held this year 07? or is it indicative that it will be and Albert is taking leave from his Nationnews Job to function full time as the BLP PEN MAN during the election campaigning period? wuh wunnuh think? 😀

  63. Wishing in Vain

I honestly think that he does more harm than good for the blp so I would suggest that they use his services more in the upcoming election, maybe he would be prepared to investige more about which he commented about Owings rant and rave with Steven Alleyne about Mr Alleyne’s report on CWC.
This will make good reading or the rant and rave with Hammy Lashley at Illaro court and the threats that owing made to Lashley if he failed to submit to run again.

  64. Adrian Hinds

Wow, where is this back and forth between Kim “de Moderator” Young and some ANON occuring? I want a ring side seat. 😀

  65. Adrian Hinds

Anon where are these exchanges taking place? Did you email Kim Young? If you did please refrain from so doing again. There is no need to legitimize the stupidy of Sunday’s Brass tacks attempt by the BLP BY committing equally stupid acts as well. Make your comments on public forums and leave out the emailing thing.

  66. Wishing in Vain

It appears that it does not take much to blow her fuse, when she does do so, it certainly appears that her nasty streak come to fore.

Until more people opt to raise their concerns to the station they will continue to feel that they can do as the want to with no regard for honesty and reliable reporting.

And much to my regret this is a downhill slide to complete control of all the media of this island.

The only avenue of some independent thinking and publication is via BU and BFP.

To which we say a huge thank you.

  67. Adrian Hinds

WIV, Kim Young in that exchange with “Anon” stated that there is or is to be a document “Made for Balance” what is she refering too?

A document that sets out what was discuss on the Brass tacks Sunday programme?

I hope not and if there is such a document i would like to get a copy.

The use of the word “Balance” makes me suspicious, and very much so in light of the convenience to the BLP and timeliness as well of the Technical difficulties that VOB says it incurred and that prevented them from playing back Sunday Brasstacks program at 11:00 pm last night.

Hal Gollop was somewhat peeved that David Thompson outed him as a BLP card carrying Member. It was comical when he responded that that revelation that Thompson would know this a personal friend of his, and Thompson said no, I know this to be case in your role as member of the NHC board. In outher words Mr Hal Gollop we are not friends. ha ha ha ha ha

….and what was this nonsense of Kim “De Moderator” Young greeting Mia “Mcguffy” Mottley as “Madam deputy Prime Minister”? who made such an official title?

  68. Wishing in Vain

The radio station and the moderator set about to deceive the listeners by not revealing their bias and strong party affiliations from the outset of the program, this I consider to dishonest on their part.

As for Mr David Thompson’s intervention it was timely and caustic to that clown on the receiving end my compliments are also extended to Mr Stephen Lashley who took Gollop to task and after which Gollop resorted to low uncalled for nasty comments meanwhile the so called moderator was unable to take control of the moment.

Even though the show was a resounding success for the limited DLP representation that it had in the studio, with the goodly gentleman Mr Greaves having to leave early, and even with a moderator who was strickly blp biased and a party faithful in the studio, the matters that counted went in the favour of the DLP despite the blp and VOB to side track honesty in this matter.

  69. Hants

What qualifies anyone to be a Moderator on a call in program?

Yes the show yesterday was lame by comparison to shows moderated by Ellis,Johnson or Marshall but the idea was probably to give someone else a chance at the job.

When dealing with serious political issues, VOB should stick to the top guns. It was a wasted opportunity.

    —————————————————————-
Yes clearly this is the case. I have for weeks now, known that Kim Young was an active BLP member, as her face book activities demonstrates.

After Owen Arthur was featured in the Nationnews paper holding a fork as if it was a shovel. I updated my profile status to read “Adrian Hinds is planning to teach Owen Arthur to Fork”

As early as thurSday of last week Kim Young had updated hers to read She will be moderating Brass tacks and she know she will get cuss”

I thought surely this is a Joke, never the less i did not dwell on it so much so that i did not tune into the Sunday programme at the start, in fact I sat at my computer to watch American football when i was suddenly reminded of Kims comment, so i tuned into VOB to see if in fact she was telling the truth.

There she was as suggested, so i listen with interest to her voice to see if i could match it to her her picture, and as it progress it was obvious that this Lady was intent on wearing her party affiliation in the moderator seat, it was so blatantly obvious, and i wondered if the listening public was given the opportunity to put her comments that context?

I called the couple people in Barbados to ask them if they heard the beginning of the program and while they said they did, they were not confident in determining if Ms. Young had indeed introduce herself as BLP member or not and suggested she most likely did not. Since i have asked and no one has responded i decided to believe until otherwise stated one way or the other, that she did not alert the public to her close relationships with the BLP and therefore this makes her attempt to moderate a partisan political issue, suspect, for perpatrating a fraud, on the listening public.

If this is indeed the case she should be ashamed of herself.

    KNOCK ON WOOD

    THE FACTS ON HARDWOOD HOUSING

“….Hardwood Housing Factory Inc. is A GOVERNMENT-OWNED company with EGFL holding more than 90% of the shares.” Minister of State, Clyde Mascoll, in a letter dated October 10, 2007 to Opposition Leader, David Thompson, on Prime Minister Owen Arthur’s instructions.

Hardwood Housing Factory Inc. is an example of the BLP’s arrogance and contempt for YOU. It’s a serious matter. You ought to be concerned. Millions of your tax dollars are being spent willy-nilly without accountability. It’s only when the BLP is put under pressure, that you get disclosure.

If David Thompson hadn’t raised the flag by calling for an independent forensic audit at Hardwood Housing Factory, you would’ve never known it’s a GOVERNMENT-OWNED company. All along, citizens were led to believe by Clyde Mascoll that the owner is a “poor little black boy” whom Government was facilitating.

In just one year of operation, Hardwood Housing Factory has gobbled up almost US$2 million of public financing through the Enterprise Growth Fund Ltd (EGFL) – the basis of Government’s ownership. The so-called “owner’s” investment was $100,000 representing “the value of the equipment contributed and his sweat equity”. Source: Indicative Term Sheet dated Nov 9, 2006.

Clyde Mascoll has more explaining to do. He needs to give FULLER CLARIFICATION of the nature of his association with the company. Saying “I hold no office or shareholding in the Hardwood Housing Factory Inc.” doesn’t satisfy legitimate questions which remain unanswered. He needs to explain, for example, why an employee would have reason to tell the CEO “nothing will make me compromise the trust that God, MR. MASCOLL and the Board has placed in me”.

When Mascoll announced the establishment of the low income housing project on September 5, 2006, it is also interesting he chose to use “WE” in talking about the factory instead of “THEY”. There are four instances where this was observed in the Nation story of September 6, 2006. Here are three: “WE are going to meet within the next two months or so with the carpenters and masons, and this is a project for small people…. “ “WE are now in the process of developing, along with the BIDC, a formal arrangement where the necessary financing would be accessed.” “The masons will put down the foundations and WE will then install on the predetermined foundation….” Don’t you find this baffling?

In the Sunday Sun of January 21, 2007, Albert Brandford, who comes across in his writings as a loyal Mascoll lieutenant, wrote the following about Mascoll’s role in Hardwood Housing Factory. “…. HE has been able to CONCEPTUALISE AND EXECUTE a vote-catching Hardwood Housing project, in three months, and which, according to media reports, is on course to deliver houses – acknowledged as one of the island’s most pressing social needs – to many Barbadians, including his own constituents in St Michael North-West.”

Mascoll’s repeated use of “WE” when he announced the project, as well as Brandford’s firm assertion that “HE” (Mascoll) was the one who CONCEPTUALIZED and EXECUTED the project, raises serious questions about Mascoll’s involvement. A Government minister’s job is not to CONCEPTUALIZE and EXECUTE a private business project. His role is to serve the public interest. It is a serious conflict of interest. Interestingly, Mascoll has never challenged Brandford’s description of his active role. Doesn’t it seem inappropriate for a minister of the Crown? Barbadians are interested in hearing THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH.

    THE CREDIBILITY FACTOR

“I look forward to a no-confidence motion tomorrow, Mr. Thompson. I have more credibility than you in Barbados and I will continue to have more credibility than you do….” Clyde Mascoll, Nation, October 15, 2007, speaking about the Hardwood issue, at Perry Gap.

Mascoll is clearly living in a dream world when he speaks about his credibility. Look now at how he puts his foot in his mouth and takes his credibility further below zero. On September 6, 2006, the Nation reported:

“Mascoll credited Barbadian Anthony Murrell with the concept, after the latter had supervised the building of 500 houses in Grenada in six months after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan.” David Thompson investigated and found the figure of 500 was inaccurate.

Here’s Mascoll’s explanation now. “….the issue of whether he (Murrell) built 500 houses in Grenada or not was “neither here or there” (Mascoll’s words). Source: Nation, October 15, 2007. No, Mascoll! The figure is relevant. It’s what you used to establish the builder’s credentials and to justify the project. Credibility is based on consistency. You cannot be serious about your credibility when you made a definitive statement a year ago and now say it is “neither here or there”. IT MATTERS! If you cannot give and keep your word on a simple issue, it raises questions as to whether Barbadians can seriously take anything you say at all.

    TERMS OF ECFL INVESTMENT

For putting money into Hardwood Housing Factory, ECFL established certain requirements which the company must meet. Where certain specified breaches occur, ECFL says it “shall be entitled to demand repayment in full of all outstanding monies due regarding the class ‘A’ shares (covering its investment) and to take such action as may be deemed necessary to protect its interest”.

Such action would apply, for example, “if any creditor shall take action against the Company to enforce payment of monies due to such creditor.” The evidence suggests Hardwood Housing Factory came close to breaching this requirement. Up to August 28, the company had issued bounced cheques totalling $33,000 for various services. One cheque, for the sum of $4,262.60, was written to the Comptroller of Customs. Management has acknowledged there were cash flow problems. Could some of Hardwood’s business practices have been contributing to the problem? Read on.

    HARDWOOD’S BUSINESS PRACTICES

Clyde Mascoll recently told us that Hardwood Housing Factory is a GOVERNMENT-OWNED company. As junior minister of finance, he shares responsibility with his “boss man” – Owen Arthur, the minister of finance – to ensure the sound and proper management of public finances. Back in July, a month before the bank declined to honour the cheques, concerns were expressed about certain business practices. These concerns are documented. It would be interesting to hear what Mascoll has to say about them. Will he say these too are “neither here nor there”?

    The charges were as follows:

There were sites where work was taking place but the sales department had neither a record of these sites nor receipts for any monies deposited in the company’s bank account for the said work.

There were persons who were being paid by the company for doing work which the company had not record of.

If such allegations were made against any other government-owned entity, it would be enough to justify an official audit of the company. Taxpayers would demand no less. As a government-owned company, Hardwood should not be treated differently. A strong case exists for an independent forensic audit of Hardwood Housing Factory.

A situation also exists where equipment used by the company – truck, stone mixer, bobcat, excavator, generators – are owned by the minority shareholder rather than the company itself. The minority shareholder acquired the equipment through lease arrangements with Simpson Finance and Consolidated Finance and, in turn, leases them to the company. Mascoll said this arrangement results in “savings of approximately $44,000 per month to the company”. He did not give details of how this is achieved.

It is alleged that Hardwood covers the cost of maintaining the equipment. Normally under arrangements of this kind, those costs are borne by the owner of the equipment. Just over a month ago, both finance companies wrote the owner, bringing to his attention that payments were in arrears. One company even mentioned the possibility of repossession if the issue wasn’t promptly resolved.

After one year in business, what does Hardwood Housing Factory have to show? SEVEN HOUSES built in the New Orleans for the Urban Development Commission (UDC). Initially, there were cost overruns of $248,000 on this project but the figure was later revised downwards to $129,000 by the UDC. Draw your conclusion!

Mascoll has complained that “THE LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF LAND” to build houses, has hindered Hardwood’s ability to deliver on its promises. It is refreshing that a member of the Owen Arthur administration has finally admitted the folly of the BLP’s land policy of aiding and abetting the sale of Barbadian land to the highest bidder who increasingly is foreign.

In the case of one St Peter land owner who was approached, readiness to make land available for low income housing was tied to Town Planning approval of other lands for “high end development”. Hardwood Housing’s experience shows how much the BLP’s ill-advised land policy is having the effect of forcing middle and low income Barbadians out of the real estate market.

    A MODEL EMPLOYER?

As a government-owned company, Hardwood Housing Factory has an obligation to be a model employer. If a government-owned company disrespects workers, doesn’t it send a wrong message to private enterprise?

In just one year of operation, here’s are blemishes on Hardwood’s image as an employer.

Charges of sexual misconduct against a manager.

Charges that employees are shouted at and abused.

Employing workers whose immigration status was not in order.

Being accused by the Barbados Workers Union of violating International Labour Organization Convention 94 regarding fair practices.

Keeping a dog inside the factory in violation of the Factories Act and pressuring workers to clean up the mess.

    SOLID CASE FOR PROBE

Going by available evidence, a solid case does exist for a probe, including independent forensic audit, of Hardwood Housing Factory. This isn’t only David Thompson’s fight. It’s YOUR fight. Demand accountability from the BLP! Tell Owen Arthur it’s time to demonstrate real leadership instead of running away from calls for accountability.

Wow a deceptive master move. Mottley knows the BLP can do little wrong in the eyes of Barbadian. Therefore she can attempt this. Such a move will have weaken any impact that Thompson delivery today would have had.

A check revealed that Miss Young’s Facebook is alive and well. She was supposedly heard telling people that her biggest regret is being affiliated in any way with the VOB show which Ellis “tricked” her into moderating because she never did it before nor was she interested and let everybody gab on.

She cliamed to me (and I saw them) that she received some vicious e-mails from one mottley@hushmail.com that were full of cuss words and calling her all manner of shite.

I don’t know her well but I met her and she is very inttelectual and maybe what comes across as arrogance is brightness. She even congratulated to blasted DLP PM!

I am a man and I have no personal interest in her but I would say this, there is nobody I don’t know that does not respect her brain and mind including the same Harold Hoyte who is a wicked Dem. So while all you criticise her, your problem is that you don’t like yourselves and it is pure jealousy. When will Bajans learn and interestingly, She is British born. She does not seem to suffer the complex this so-called Blog does – tearing down decent human beings. No one takes this loose blog seriously. The best to you.
