Leroy Parris, Clico, David Thompson and Mariano Browne – Valid Points By A Reader, Or Using BFP For An Agenda?

This letter was received from an anonymous reader. What do you think, folks?

The recent debacle surrounding the semmingly innocent appointment of Mariano Browne to Trinidad and Tobago’s Finance ministry hides many a skeleton.

Leroy Parris’ motives are clearer than most. He resents the fact that he was denied a seat on the board of CCB and blames Mariano for this. The fact that the Central Bank of Barbados did not consider him “Fit and Proper” to be involved will not wash with him or his kind. Something about a woman scorned I believe.

Why he would leave the smoking gun behind him that a two year old countersuit of no merit would be brought up the weekend after he visited Trinidad is even inconsequential.

What is worrying is that he used two One Caribbean Media newspapers, The Trinidad Express and The Nation of Barbados to be the sole recipients of this “amazing” story.

Both of theses papers are public companies and lo and behold their largest shareholders are CLICO! No other newspaper sought fit to run the story as it was clearly planted and very one sided. Now one can only speculate that Lawrence Duprey who has an extra “special relationship” with Leroy Parris had approved this action given the type of firepower employed.

This of course the same Duprey who finances the UNC and through Leroy Parris, David Thompson and the DLP. This of course is the same David Thompson who is Leroys lawyer and initiated the ridiculous “Forensic audit” done by PwC which is quite laughable and was correctly ignored by CCB’s auditors and board in passing the final accounts.

One might even think that Clico was waging a campaign to prevent Manning from employing Mariano because he would be privy to the inner workings of CL Financial, a comany frequently accused of insolvency.

Or one may also surmise that David Thompson has used this opportunity to try and link non connected events together to discredit Mariano even if it meant that he would be unable to work with the recently appointed Manning Government.

Either way you’d probably be correct.

Remember even if CCB did fund the BLP in some small way it was in order for Duprey to try and cover the fact that Leroy has been funding “His special Friend” for years and for this election.

Thompson, Duprey, Parris… all birds of a feather. Hopefully they’ll all flock off together and leave the Caribbean to develop without their ilk.

BFP when you are finished discussing the above persons, could you give us an update on the court cases involving VECO and the Alaskan senator and 3S Danos and his fraud case in the court in England?

    Fraud and corruption is everywhere.

“special relationships” are nothing new to both parties nor is having favourites with special access to the corridors of power.

What is important to all citizens, however, is the Rule of Law and those issues that relate to it such as full transparency, accountability, independent judiciary, freedom of information, speedy and impartial trial, etc. etc.

The failure of Thompson to actively and diligently attack the BLP at every moment that he is awake leaves a question in everyones mind, if the fix is already in?

Nevertheless, the electorate has more than ample proof that the existing party has absolutely no right to be governing in any capacity or in any jurisdiction above the level of dog catcher.

You can smell partisan politricks, once you have any story dealing with any questionable dealing involving the opposition or party friends, our leading commenters keep as far as possible from the debate. If it was dealing with the other party, we will see lengthy comments from the people like HH the Caricom Political Consultant and the DLP backers.

I do agree that we have within our midst, some questionable undertakings that consist of millions of taxpayers dollars, and we need to bring these perpetrators to justice, but I will not aligned with gutter politricks to gain any friendship.

I will make sure that a level playing field persist.

  5. frankology

Oh BU, this is an excellent observation but will garnish only a few commenters due to party partisanship.

I can see a problem that is being overlooked. Can you remember in 2005 during the Panday fracas, the Trinidadian offices of Clico and the Chairman’s home were searched. Can you also remember another Clico executive was charge with Panday’s wife along with an official of a construction company?

Do you feel that the pain suffered them might be the reason to use the Browne issue to embarrass the Manning Government?

More facts will tell you if this is just a smoked screen, thus the long delay in exposing this 2004 dealing.

I remember this and remember remarking to a cbc news clip of Leroy Parris talking about it and suggesting that he should have had a PR spokesperson speak to the public on it, as he came off as an elitist, condesending black man, I was deeply offended by his tone and consternation for the labour process and the right of a Barbadian worker to organize. In my mind he was no different in his action on this matter than the white business owners.

…….But lets not be sidetrack from the premise of the article, which isn’t supported by any facts of what it contends. Isn’t this the same yardstick with which Blp supporters suggest that their party and their corporate friends be judged by?

Thompson, Duprey, Parris, Arthur, Ass.coll, Motley, give us a break. Of course they have an agenda, separate, but to each his own. I am concerned about my own. All that I can wish for is that if I succeed, there will be some moral consequence. I absolutely have no high opinion of the above mentioned names. I believe that they can in no way influence my sense of appropriateness or belonging. I do not wish them well, but not for long.

Do you want another PM with OCD?
Our current PM is already totally obsessed by the stealing machinations already in place and now finely tuned!

It would be nice to have a normal or more-normal PM for a change, dontcha think?

I’d like to think that David Thompson has at least a hobby or one other interest in his life,
to which he can escape temporarily, for a few minutes or hours per day, per week.

What exactly is the financing arrangement in place between Clico Holdings Barbados (Leroy Parris) and David Thompson and the DLP?
Why do DLP biased BFP bloggers run away from this everytime it comes up?

    Adrian,
Could be the cheques from CCB, one arm of the Duprey empire were to address the inequality of all the cheques that were going from Clico Holdings Barbados to Thompson and the DLP.
Duprey is well known for funding both sides in an election but recently he has gotten sloppy and allowed Parris to fund only his “special friend” Thompson.

  27. Remember Plantations

    Wishing in Vain,
Thompson’s facts are also wrong, not unusual for him. Their is no cheque for $750,000 just an assertion of one.
As in any political funding, there are cheques, but in his haste to catch someone, he got ahead of himself and screwed up his own trap by getting it wrong. Sound familiar?
Why doesn’t Thompson disclose his own cheques, which ultimately come from the same source, Lawrence Duprey and CLICO, via his “Close Friend” Leroy Parris?

  28. Wishing in Vain

Least you forget it was Mr. Thompson that confronted your PM Owing with the release of the cheque in the House of Assembly.

Trust me had the low life Owing had the chance to do the same thing to Mr. Thompson he would long have done so.

So your suggestions are airy fairy in their nature, remember that it was owing not Mr. Thompson that spluttered, sweated and stuttered when exposed about the illegal nature of his actions.

Let’s face it you and your party will go down in the history books of this island as the gang of crooks that has stolen the largest volume of funds from the taxpayers and the ones involved in the largest collection of Fraud, let us not forget your propensity to align with international crooks such as VECO and the PRISON, DANOS and the 3S ROAD WORKS PROJECT, JOHNSON AND WASHINGTON with the 2,500 SLOT MACHINES COMING IN THRU THE BACK DOOR, with Owing and Nicholls are intimately involved in this process.

    —————————————————————

not true, new revelations would not do it. Only a succesful vote which is an impossibility would resonate. case in point there are very few people that can recall 5 % of what was debated or said during the successful Sandiford no confidenc motion, and this is not a result of the passage of time, it is becuase such does not matter. Thats why Owen Arthur can facetiously bragged that he is the only one that brought a no confidence motion that brought down a sitting Prime Minister. The sad thing for me is and that speaks against the view that says Barbadians are politicaly mature is that while a no confidence motion has merit, has validity in a democracy, the public perception of it is that it must be successful in order for it to be viewed in any good light.

…..These facts are not Thompson fault. Again it goes back to the system of governance we have, it is a farce of mammoth proportions.

    There is no miscalculation.

Mascoll and his wife already held a press conference in which they implicated themselves.

They said Mrs. Mascoll hired Murrel to work on a property she and her brother owns.

Is there only one Building contractor in Barbados?

Conflict of interest. Plain and simple. I will not waste time with more details of that press confrerence.

Mascoll was on radio supporting Hardwood Housing inc. and Mr.Murrel on the strength of a claim that Murrel built 500 houses in post Hurricane Grenada.

Mascoll should resign or be fired…..Sorry this is Barbados. Conflict of interest does not exist.

If we only use what Mascoll has said, there is enough to fire him and don’t tell what a DLP did 15 years ago.

  41. Anonymous

did I miss the no confidence discussion in the house today? Is it finished?

  42. Littleboy

Mascoll has not refuted a single statement made by Thompson today.
He is hiding behind the “help a poor black man” story.
If Murrell had built the 280 houses Mascoll claimed were constructed in the 3 month period in Grenada, how come Murrell did not have any money to put into Hardwood? Do we realize that Murrell ‘s share are only “sweat equity” and not CASH?
How many of us knew that government had set up a company called Hardwood? We knew of the BTII, Port Inc, Grantley Adams Inc… but why not Hardwood?
    Strange eh!!!

  43. Hants

I just heard Mascoll speaking (news on VOB).

The DLP should thank him for leaving the party.

He just said “I did nothing wrong. I was just trying to help a small black man who had no money.”
    Is he nuts?

Arthur has to fire Mascoll. The average barbadian cannot accept that a minister would help an individual get $2 million.

What about all the other poor black men struggling with their small businesses. Will he help them get some money too?

  44. Anonymous

    Littleboy,
Mia said that the case presented by Thompson was weak and that it is clear that the BLP has nothing to answer to. What is the status of the debate?

  45. Thistle

It was embarrassing to watch and listen to Mascoll in his reply to the No Confidence Debate today. He was woefully pathetic and absolutely unconvincing. I thought he was going to cry at one point. He would make a fine stage actor.

  46. Remember Plantations

I read today that the Enterprise Growth Fund Limited realised a profit last year from providing RISK capital to small businesses mostly run by “Poor little (black) men and women.

    This is extremely laudable.
What part of RISK capital is it that Thompson and the DLP don’t understand. If Murrell couldn’t do the job he was replaced by his own board by Bobby Khan. Not every investment is going to pay off and for the whole DLP to expend so much time chasing $2m in the grand scheme of things seems petty.
Maybe, the DLP just want to make Mascoll pay for realising that the grass was greener on the other side after Thompson left him on his own to take a beating in the last election.
    Is this how leaders lead?

  48. Straight talk

I agree that Thompy has the edge on Lyde Mascoll in the debate.

    That is not my point.

The public need to see nailed on corruption implicating Mascoll before he is seen to be guilty and so judged in the court of public opinion.

The company has been unusually, if not uniquely well treated by the EGF and there can be no confidence at all in their due diligence prior to risking taxpayer’s money.

This is where the point of any attack should be.

Where is the oversight of the chairman Hoyos?

But criticism of the board will never happen and more stringent EGF guidelines won’t help because the lending parameters were totally ignored in Hardwood’s case and nobody from EGF is explaining their negligence, but more importantly no-one is asking them to.

All Thompy has done is highlighted again the dual standards operating in Barbados.

Everyone knows the shortcuts to the system and the BLP admit using these, whenever they like, with no complaint whatsoever from the electorate.

Today’s Public Service Bill is a perfect example.
Anywhere else in the world this scandal would never stand, but here in Bim it’s business as usual.

  55. Sargeant

Some words when directed to certain audiences are designed to generate an emotional response and Mascoll must think that when he uses the words “poor black man” that Bajans will ignore the crux of the matter and focus on the “poor black man”. Last time I checked the population of Barbados was at least 90% black and the majority of the poor would likely be black. There are many words he could have used e.g constituent; citizen but he trots out a stale red herring to side track the issue.

I must ask why did ASSCOLL choose to shaft Owing and company today with his statement thaty why worry about his company over $ 2 million when there is so much more to ask about with the ABC Highway contract this was a most revealing statement to me in other words why worry about the small sum of $ 2 million when there is US $ 120 million to be stolen from the taxpayers, I would like to say that he is an idiot but I will refrain from saying this as I believe he knows exactly who he is targeting with his comments and exactly why he said what he said, there is corruption all the way through this gathering of crooks.

    So Adrian,
pleading guilty is all that would convince you? Dream on. There is nothing guilty in Leroy Parris funding Thompson and the DLP, so why so defensive.
What would be wrong would be to connect the dots…Rayside…Sam Lords…Barbados Farms etc. and get to a return of the Plantations fiasco that handed a monoploly in food to BS&T .
When funds are given usually something is expected in return…even if you never plead guilty.
    —————————————————————

Who is being defensive? if there is nothing wrong why are you going on about it then? Maybe this explains why others are not interested in it. I honestly cannot find anything to debate in the article. Can you help me to understand what it is you are getting at??????????

We have a most amazing situation where after on going push for the opposition to debate the motion and they then decide that they are ready, willing and able to proceed the oversized piece of garbage thing decides to run from the debate and bullies the house into a recess and returns to gov’t business, I would suggest that our democratic rights are being taken away.

The statement of the day has to go to the one Malick with teeth ASSCOLL in his patheic sickly manner, could dear it is only a little black boy line just does not cut it, both of you all are smart enough to know that you two conspired to shaft the taxpayers of this nation in no small way.

The statement of the day is when ASSCOLL states that why are they worried about the $ 2 million in his project why not investigate the ABC highway project, this is a very clear statement that implicates the minister of public works and the minister of finance and planning as it strongly suggest by ASSCOLL that GLYNE CLARKE and OWING ARTHUR are stealing out of that project, what a revelation to be made by the idiot ASSCOLL.

Look what gets revealed when this pressure is applied.

  63. Straight talk

Do I detect the hand of Mascoll’s economics expertise in the drafting of Savings Tips for prospective buyers on Hardwood’s website (hardwoodhousing.com).

“With this in mind, we have compiled a list of practical money saving tips that should help you to get back on budget as soon as possible.

    (2) Pack Lunch. Believe it or not, all those lunch hours at local restaurants add up, brining your own saves several dollars each day.”

I put it to you that ASSCOLL delivered the single largest blow to Owing and his gang of crooks by his statement that they ought to investigate the ABC highway project, that was the the shot of the day.

For general information neither of the two websites that ASSCOLL provided are doing his cause any good one site forwards to http://onlinebookz.net/?rid=911310 and the other has no mention of Grenada.

Maybe when he thinks about lying he would do us a favour and stop abuseing the house of assembly to do so, this man is a sick liar.

Is it not funny when you have two brothers one rich as ever and the other stuggling like ever, then one who is stuggling and has just been evicted from the building which he rents in Lower Estate.

The other brother has meanwhile amassed millions thru arrangements like the one that took place in Jamaica with the JAMAICA KICKBACK AGREEMENT with DANOS the builder of the flyover project and Kott with VECO the PRISON builder.

Who are we referring to in this scene none other than Owing and his brother Richard Arthur.

Owing is sitting pretty while his brother is sucking salt, no wonder he was so eager to get him nominated to run for the seat in St.Lucy, maybe he was trying to set him up, to give him some of the spoils of his gov’t.

  67. hants

It is my view that a matter worthy of discussion is what Mr. Mascoll, his wife and Mr.Murrel said at their press conference and what Mr.Mascoll said in parliament yesterday.

Mr.Murrel did work on Mrs. Mascoll’s property while he was CEO of Hardwood Housing INC. This man must be Superman.

According to Mr.Mascoll, Mr.Murrel built 280 houses in 3 months. No wonder he could be the CEO of a start up company managing $2million in “start up funds” and still find time to work on Mrs.mascoll’s house.

Mr.Mascoll said he was trying to help a poor black man who has no money. Did Mr.Murrel build the houses in Grenada for free?

Mr. Mascoll is at least guilty of poor judgement not befitting a minister of state.

Mr.Murrel could be the best Builder in Barbados but he is not the only Builder in Barbados.

Mr.Murrel and or any workers employed by Hardwood Housing Inc.should not work on any project owned by Mr.Mascoll’s wife.

Conflict of interest. Mascoll should resign.

Mascoll should resign! There is clear evidence that he behaved in a manner unfitting of an MP. He went beyond his boundaries. He has admitted to wrongdoing in order to help a poor black boy who molested female workers, and worked Mascoll’s wife property. Mascol used his position to acquire a more than usual amount for Hardwood.
The evidence is clear…he should do the decent thing and resign immediately.

Mascoll has not refuted Thompson’s charges but he must because if he does not he will be found guilty as charged. The Bees majority numbers may win battle in house but lose war in public domain..

There are a lot more people out there that are fed up with theis type of behaviour than you may imagine. Barbadians are not foolish! They recognise that Mascoll is not denying he did these things. He is saying that as far as he is concerned what he did was not wrong. Imagine he only spend a few months with Owen and Mia and he learnt the game of thiefing in quick time.

The vote of no confidence must be clearly a vote of right from wrong. NO CONFIDENCE IN MASCOLL AND OWEN ARTHUR

The basis for No-Confidence Motions is well established in our parliamentary history. No-Confidence Motions were brought by the Barbados Labour Party against members of former Democratic Labour Party administrations for seemingly frivolous and vexatious reasons, but yet the right and decision of the then Opposition to table such motions, were respected and facilitated.Indeed, this Barbados Labour Party government was swept to power in the down-wind of a no-confidence motion. There have even been Motions against Speakers of the House. Motions of No-Confidence are moved against Ministers, in the main, who have exercised poor judgement, acted against the tenets of good Ministerial practice, for corrupt practices or for acts of moral turpitude and otherwise.

This is therefore an important parliamentary tool to bring to the attention of the public, acts of Ministers, for which Ministers should be censured and that is what David Thompson’s resolution sought to do. No one in the DLP is interested in witch-hunts or the destruction of any small, black businessman. “But where any black businessman, or white businessman, or techni-colour businessman can use his relationship with a Minister to visit a reign of terror on young women and through his company breach our immigration laws to the detriment of small, ordinary Barbadian workers, intimidate staff – some of whom were ordinary Barbadians on their first ever job – on the strength that he got the backing of a Minister, even encourage staff members to engage in fraudulent practices and worse still if that small, black businessman is only a front for someone in high office,” said the Opposition Leader in the debate on Tuesday. It is now left to the judgment of the electorate of Barbados to determine the appropriateness of the Prime Minister’s actions in this whole Hardwood issue in not having a forensic investigation.

David Thompson promised that, “any letter such as that, received by me as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of this country, will be acted upon with despatch! And furthermore, any minister or official of a Democratic Labour Party administration discovered, after due process, to have acted in a manner as spelt out in that letter, will be censored and in the case of a minister of my Government, fired on the spot!!” This is the practice of good governance which the Democratic Labour Party pledges to the people of Barbados on its return to office. No one should cover up for any minister, whether that minister joined the DLP on his or her own free will and accord, or was purchased through inducements. Hardwood cannot and will not be resolved on the floor of a dying parliament. This matter cannot and will not be objectively approached and handled by Parliamentarians conscious of their political mortality.

This is a matter for the people of Barbados to decide. This is a matter for the church to comment upon. This is a matter for journalists and hosts of call in programmes to ventilate and get to the bottom of.

The Parliamentary Opposition has done its job.

Who ensured that Mutual(Sagicor) got waivers when it went to Trinidad (and now is, incidentially owned by Trinidad)? Tom Adams and Bree St. John.

Who applied for CLICO’s waiver of those plantation taxes? Sir Harold St. John.

Who gave CIBC/First Caribbean a waiver of $54 million in taxes when the takeover took place? Owen Arthur.

Which bank did the large cheque Owen got before the last election come from? Clico’s

Whats your point? Who are you getting at? Get real, son.

Barbadians who saw and heard Clyde Mascoll were left with no doubt that the allegations in the motion of no confidence were based on fact none of which have been denied by Mascoll himself. Indeed Mr. Mascoll’s only defence is that someone stole a file from Hardwood and that this was a personal attack. What Mascoll did not say in his response is either that the Deputy Prime Minister mislead him or he did not understand her instructions on how to effectively manage a project of this nature. The public has been left with no doubt that this Hardwood issue is not a personal attack on Mascoll but an attack on Owen Arthur and his style of government. For too long government lead by Arthur have felt that they were not accoutable to Barbadians for the way they spend our hard earned tax payers dollars. Ministers now speak in hundreds of millions ($700 million for a new hospital) some Ministers even speak in Barbados dollars one day and then US dollars the next whilst not providing any evidence for the discrepancy. Barbadians have had enough. We require full disclosure from government and government ministers. Arthur and his ministers do not understand the difference between governance and government. They do not understand that you can have good governance in government. Its time for them to go and for Barbados to truly have a government who understands its responsibility to its people to act with honesty, to act with openness and to account on a timely and efficient manner for all action and entities under its management. The BLP has deliberately created hundreds of entities to facilitate its opaque style of government. The IMF recently recognised this. The DLP has been complaining for years. Hardwood is not only about Mascoll being caught, its about the end of poor governance in Barbados. Thank you David Thompson and your team.

I understand that during her Reply to the No Confidence Motion in the House, Minister Liz Thompson referred to a letter, written by me, and published in The Nation newspaper, in which I stated that I could not find my son (David Thompson). I did not hear what she said because I do not listen to ANYTHING Liz Thompson says. However, I was amazed that, with so many important issues at hand, she would be so infantile as to make mention of what was a satirical, harmless, tongue-in-cheek letter! David and I have always enjoyed teasing each other, and engaging in political banter. Most intelligent people understand this, and I know there are those on Liz Thompson’s side of the House who would. But Liz Thompson herself? Nah! She would never understand satirical humour. How about when Lowdown Richard Hoad pokes fun at his wife, or mother-in-law? Does anyone make a fuss about that? It is all part and parcel of an affectionate relationship. But would Liz Thompson understand that? Nah! Hence her purile attempt to belittle David. Sorry, Liz, it didn’t work.

  94. Liz Thompson should have kept her mouth shut in this debate. She was pathetic.

She should know about wasting taxpayers money on housing project since her then-soon-to-be-husband, who had no experience in asbestos removal was given a lucrative contract by her then Ministry (NHC) to work on Kensington Lodge. He failed with the job and then NHC had to get another contractor to do the job.

At least he was able to pay for their expensive wedding …. or perhaps it was the taxpayers who did.

Then she proceeded in Tuesday debate to cast aspersions on the characters of DLP who could not defend themselves in Parliament.

However, I am sure that she and teh BLP will feel the full wrath of the DLP candidates in the court of public opinion and debates. Liz and the BLP team have so much nastiness in their closets that one could write a volume of novels on them. Ask her about her husband’s role in writing bounce cheques, kinky girl sessions in St. Thomas, homosexuality and lesbianism.

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones

Herein lies my problem. First there was no evidence produced by Thompson to show that Murrell was only a front for Mascoll.

Second how can you blame a man for another man’s behaviour unless it was on his instructions. Should the PM of St. Kitts be held accountable for a charge of sexual assault brought against his public relations consultant?

Third in the main I am most disappointed in Thompson’s prosecution of the case. For the most part he simply read out a letter that was already in the public domain. His evidence of any of these charges was either thin or non-existent.

Oh and by the way for your own edification a forensic audit is usually ordered in circumstances where there is criminal activity. Thompson did not show any evidence of this either. Poor choices and bad management perhaps, but criminal activity no.

After having Owing in his quest to shaft mottley and install ASSCOLL ahead of her in the pecking order, and now have to befound to be such an immoral spineless beast that he has brought into the inner circle of the blp.

It has certainly brought Owings name into the gutter by his close association and unwavering support of ASSCOLL, and in doing so he now has two choices either dump him to try to recover the tarnished name of the party or to continue to support him and allow ASSCOLL to lead them into further decline and moral disruption.

The signs are clear that Owings close association with ASSCOLL is not doing the party any favours at all actually it is driving very loyal party members away to vote against his dishonesty it also suggest that Owing condones and supports and is part and parcel of this corruption in office.

I don’t want to give the BLP any ideas and i do have a few, that can turn this thing around, but this will be a time for Owen Arthur to show some of that master political strategy that he is tooted to have, as everything that Mia has touched since her replacement of Atherley as the mouth piece of the party has turn dust.

….The next move is Owen’s, that is if what you have said about public perception is correct.

Can’t see why all the fuss over $2m of investment money from EGFL.
The woman was instructed by the board not to give herself a big raise due to the finances of the company. She gave it to her daughter instead and when she was rightfully fired she called sexual harassment and ran with some dubious papers to Thompson.
Such are industrial relations in Barbados today.
The fact that Thompson takes the papers from someone of such low integrity shows how desperate he is to hang the very same man he left to take his(Thompson’s) licks in the last election.
Leadership? In the land of the blind etc. etc.

If what you say is true then i have no problem declaring that i applaud her efforts to bring these thing to the public’s attention, while agreeing that if she broke any laws, she should also have her day in court. I wouldn’t object if she is found guilty and some leniency is afforded to her, but she must face the music if she did any wrong. No favours for her, no favours for Mascoll, or Owen. De law De law should will out in all cases.

    *********

    Adrian,

I am not an Arthur supporter nor have I ever been, but I must confess that what we are seing now is the same Owen Arthur we have always seen.

He is not and was never a master strategist in my view. He was dealt a good hand and I think the Dems were just inept and divided since the Sandiford implosion. Worse still the Mascoll defection. I have always been of the view that once the Dems are united they are unstoppable.

The kinds of events that afflicted the Dems would destroy the soul of an institution in normal circumstances. I credit David Thompson with a lot. I have to when I examine where the DLP was in January 2006 – a broken institution with a broken leader both physically and psychology – and where it is now.

Secondly, Mottley, Atherley and Mascoll were put forward by Arthur so that he could hide away and be the elder statesman – particularly since the Budget blow by Thompson.

Thompson has now drawn him into the trenches because Mottley messed this whole thing up, Atherley is toothless and Mascoll is discredited. Arthur’s plan has to change and he has to go in and fight or give it all away and take the blame.

Thirdly, his tools are restricted and timing is limited. He should have fired Mascoll and then rehabilitated him after the elections. His options are now very constrained. He has less than six months left.

Finally, David Thompson has the makings of a royal in his hand and I bet you Arthur will have to bluff or fold.

  115. Leroy & David

    Levitus,
A “royal” what in his hand?
No-one would define Leroy P as anything but a royal ***.
Nuff kicks. Over to you DLP hacks.

  116. Sargeant

The folks who think Arthur will fire Clyde (I did nothing wrong) Mascoll must be deep into the spirits or smoking some powerful weed. It ain’t gonna happen!!!
    1) With an election looming do you think Arthur will give the Dems additional ammunition?
    2) The BLP supporters always suggest that Mascoll was “unfaired” by the DLP and firing him would negate that argument
    3) Firing Mascoll would be an admission that his actions were inappropriate and Arthur and the BLP would never admit that.
    4) Arthur is not about to be forced into action by the DLP, he prefers to initiate any dismissal.
    5) Arthur would be seen to have poor judgement in welcoming Mascoll from the DLP and making him a minister, Arthur does not want to be seen in that light.

So get off those flights of fancy, Mascoll will keep his job for the time being or until the election results are disclosed

That Political meeting is going to be sweet , sweet , sweet with all of members of both houses speaking it will be electric indeed.

It will be at the HARDCOURT in BAYVILLE and the actions promises to be tight and hitting real hard.

I want to hear the Leader of the Opposition rip more holes into ASSCOLL and leave him with more holes in him and looking like a bad piece of Swiss Cheese.

  122. Kott gets 6 years in prison for corruption

Former state Rep. Pete Kott was sentenced today to six years in federal prison and fined $10,000 for his conviction on bribery and other corruption charges.

In handing down the sentence this morning, U.S. District Judge John Sedwick said he found that Kott, a former House speaker who represented Eagle River until last year, committed perjury in his testimony during his trial in September.

The judge did not set a date for Kott to report to prison. Kott left the courtroom accompanied by his daughter, his girlfriend, his lawyer and friends. A mob of reporters waited outside.

Kott’s sentence also includes three years’ probation, and he was ordered to receive alcoholism treatment.

Kott’s attorney had argued that he should receive 33 months in prison – a little less than three years -while prosecutors had requested 10 years.

A federal jury convicted Kott, 58, of bribery, conspiracy and extortion for his role in advocating an oil tax pushed by Veco Corp. executives and favored by North Slope oil producers. He received nearly $9,000, a political poll for his re-election campaign and the promise of a job, all from from Veco executives, according to testimony.

I think there should be a strong public outcry against the blatantly partisan behaviour, and downright rudeness, shown by the Speaker of the House on the suspension of the No Confidence Motion. Mr. Roett reminds me of the late Burton Hinds – partisan and dictatorial.

  124. Owing seems to have lost his brain or is it the rum taking control of his emotions?
What he is so accustomed to doing here of calling and cursing people at will seems now very sadly to have been carried forward to his manner with dealing with the various heads of state, I am not sure that this manner is the right manner for our PRIME MINISTER to display at this level.

Conferences sources spoke of “tension and verbal clashes” involving some heads of government including the Prime Ministers of Barbados Owen Arthur (current chairman of the community} and Grenada’s Prime Minister Keith Mitchell who had initiated moves for the cost of living problem to be a priority agenda.

If I did not know better I would have considered that Owing was worrying about the impact his stealing from the treasury may have been having on our cost of living position, or he may have been worrying about what he is going to do about the one ASSCOLL, his worries may even extend to the HARDWOOD HOUSING issues, or his worries may even be thinking about what to do with the thing in his cabinet called moraless mottley, or his worries could be the results of the court cases both in the UK and the USA for FRAUD, BRIBERY and CORRUPTION by people that he went into bed with on projects here in Barbados with VECO and DANOS two players and two Scamps, maybe it could have been the impact of the crap that they have done with GREENLAND or the BATHS, or it could be Lynch and his want a plantation claim or maybe the recall of 90,000 arrivals for CWC or the 34 cruise ships and the 700 yachts, but then I opened my eyes and realised it was merely a dream and the reality is that these things do not matter the least to Owing and his clan of criminals so long as they keep their bank accounts growing.

I was so wrong to assume that this party was a caring party, we have seen and felt that this is far from the case.
