Another Barbados House Sinking – Government Minister and Ministry Told 6 Months Ago, Have Done Nothing

“Whoever is responsible – I just want them to come and tell me what is going on before it is too late,” … homeowner Susan Greenidge

Gaping Holes Spark Fear For Long Gap Homeowner

THE RECENT COLLAPSE of an apartment building at Arch Cot, Brittons X Cross, St Michael, has caused some fear of land slippage in another St Michael area. This time it is at 1st Avenue, Long Gap, Spooners Hill, St Michael, where Susan Greenidge lives with her four children and a grandchild.

She said for the past year, two gaping holes had been widening in her backyard, and efforts to find out what was going wrong seemed to have reached a bottleneck.
Scared of a similar ocurrence of the tragedy which claimed five lives at Brittons Hill last Sunday, Greenidge is appealing to all the relevant authorities to help find out what is going on beneath her house.

Not only is she afraid of the holes in the yard, but Greenidge’s back bedroom has been sinking, and she has been forced to move the children’s beds into her living room.

“I am scared. I don’t even go near the yard or that bedroom anymore. When I first realised the hole was getting bigger and bigger, I contacted Hamilton Lashley [Government’s Adviser on Poverty]. He sent someone to look at it, but since then I’ve never heard any response,” she added.

Her next step was to call the Environmental Health Unit, first about five months ago and then again on Wednesday.

“The gentleman took pictures the first time he came and said he would pass them on to his boss, but I haven’t heard anything from them yet.”

Next door, her neighbour Sonia Goodridge has also been seeing some cracks in the foundation of the steps in her yard. Outside a heavy steamroller was paving some marl in the area, causing some serious vibrations throughout the house, and for Susanne the memory of Arch Cot was all too fresh in her mind.

“I just need the geologists, environmentalists, whoever is responsible – I just want them to come and tell me what is going on before it is too late,” she pleaded.

“Whoever is responsible…”

Susan Greenidge is looking for “Whoever is responsible…” to advise her as to whether or not her family is in danger from holes that are opening up in her yard and the fact that her home is sinking.

We can answer that for her… Yes, Mrs. Greenidge, your family is in danger, has been for months or even years, and there is NOBODY in government who cared enough to do anything for you – unless they will now look at it after another family was murdered died.

Pack up your kids and belongings and get out, because this is Barbados and you are on your own. We have no building code and there are no homeowner protection laws as many other countries have.

hamilton-lashley-barbados.jpg

You called Minister of Poverty Hamilton Lashley over six months ago and nothing was done. You called the Environmental Health Unit and nothing was done.

The only reason your story is in the paper now is the deaths of the Codrington family. IF you do get a response from government, know that it is ONLY because of the Codrington family.

And that is why it is so important for Bajans to keep the deaths of the Codringtons in our memories and on our tongues. Their deaths must change something for the good or they will have died for nothing.

    So true BFP.

One thing that is interesting is the cultural past time of Barbadians to have the government do for them, and it doesn’t seem to be base on a person finanacial and or social status either. We have so called business people in Barbados whose only business strategy is to procure a Government contract. There is a resident near the cave-in Britton’s hill who has made demands of the government to put him in a home that’s comparable to the one that he has been asked to vacate. He claims that it is now valued over a 1 million. David Shorey, Nicholls, R.L.Seale on down to the late Gearbox have seen government as an entity to do for them what they should in part or at lease attempt to do for themselves. But i don’t blame these people, what we have is a system and a political class that over the years has created, encourage, and nurtured this dependentcy and entitlement mentality that has stagnated Barbadians to our own detriment.

Goodness! Why are we getting the feeling this is a more common story than we think but the authorities don’t want anyone to know?

A suggestion: stop all work on the flyovers we don’t need and use the manpower, expertise, and money to shore up, or condemn and replace, the houses of our people where there is danger of more death.

Maybe some of that also focused on the schools on risky ground?

If we ever needed selfless, tough leadership it is now.

Forgot to mention that we laughed loudly when watching the flyover video on BU. Three evenly spaced cars flowing smoothly over the roundabouts was so lovely. Thing is that there are 60,000+ other cars that are gonna clog it all up same as always.

  4. Straight talk

Don’t laugh at the cartoon, it’s extremely well done and true to life.

Even details such as three drunk drivers (3:16) travelling west on a previously eastbound carriageway at D’arcy Scott.

Presumably looking for the Lord Willoughby exit.

Nice to see that these stories are coming out into the light of day, thus illustrating an earlier comment that the island’s coral cap is riddled with cracks fissures and caves.
Everywhere I’m hearing people talking worriedly about what’s under their house!

    Questions on Arch Cot:-

    (1) How long was the apartment vacant before the Codringtons moved in?

    (2) Why did the previous tenants move out?

    (3) Does anyone know who the previous tenants were, and can they speak to them and report back to Barbados free press?

    (4) Did the previous tenents smell a rat, for example, cracks in the walls, loose tiles, falling masonary, problems with the roof, windows that were difficult to close, doors that dropped?

    (5) Who are the owner/owners and was anything reported to them which they ignored as long as the rent was paid?

    (6) How did the Codringtons come to know that the apartment was for rent, who introduced them?

    (7) I am of the opinion that these things just dont happen, they are always warning signs which are ignored, dismissed, rationaliseed away and so on until it is too late. I have a piece a old car and It always tell me when trouble is on the horizon one way or another.

“Whoever is responsible”? Is Susan Greenidge for real? Who is more responsible for looking out for her own saftey than Susan Greenidge? Is she going to wait until the house caves in and look for someone to blame when she gets injured or killed? WTF…

What about the man in Brittons X road who was talking about his million dollar house, he should look for somewhere else to live, and be thankful that he is still able to speak.

Did he know that caves existed in the area?

We tax paying Barbadians should only have to provide housing for those who are financially unable to look after their housing needs.

  17. Maat

How are the police meant to catch speeding drivers on the new highways?. The concrete barriers make it impossible to turn before the roundabouts and give chase. Hopefully the force will have put a strategy in place to have their speed gun patrolman hiding in cart roads or designated areas on either side of the barriers. They will also need to have an efficient cordoning off system to locate and trap escaping criminals or bandits who they may literally pass on the wrong side of our new motorway.

Why does the mighty Gabby have that stupid smile on his face while attending the service yesterday?
Do they all take this as a Public Relations exercise if so there PR people are advising them badly as this is a solemn occassion and one for maintaining some decorum , is it because he is alongside his provider of his funding ?
We have seen the manner in which Lynch, Prescod and Marshall in particular have bungled this event and we even went as far to suffer the sickness of having Lynch laughing when asked about the family of the deceased, and now we see Gabby standing alongside Arthur and smiling at him, how sick can we get over money and the greed for it ?

  19. The Falcon

It is good to say Susan Greenidge is responsible for her own safety, but while that is so, have you seen the cost of renting houses in Bim these days? Trying to get a housing unit is nearly impossible too. I am no communist but I like their ideal – equal distribution of wealth. It may not have to be equal but the divide is too great in the free world of Bim. She may not have anywhere else to go. So often we see news clippings of people with their children and belongings on the street. Sad, sad situation. She already have a grand child along with her own to take care of – it has to be rough on her.

  20. Concerned Citizen

    Fellow Barbadians…

It only takes one last straw to break a camel’s back; likewise, it only takes one final vibration to cause a total collapse.

Susan Greenidge has every right to be afraid, not just concerned or alarmed; she also has every right and a paternal OBLIGATION to do whatever is in her power to protect her life and those of her children. If anything bad happens at this point and she comes out unscathed but her children die, whether anyone likes it or not, the fact remains that she will be in fact be guilty of negligence in any such resulting death. The non-responsiveness of the authorities, while shameful, is no excuse for leaving her children in a potentially very dangerous situation. If she is not co-habiting with the father of her children, I suspect her lack of proactive action right now will be very credible grounds to challenge her suitability as a mother and her right to custody. She must not point her finger at the indifferent authorities and refuse to move simply because she has no place else to go. In this circumstance, “comfortable living” CANNOT be the priority – the priority MUST be to move out immediately. It’s far better to be living in a field ALIVE than to die suddenly when the roof over your head and the floor under your feet collapse around you.

As a responsible mother, particularly having full knowledge of what has just transpired at Brittons Hill, it is imperative that she make every effort to get her family out of that house like yesterday. I do not know if she owns the house (or the bank) or if she is renting – that is irrelevant in the context of what needs to happen immediately.

I would strongly advise her to enlist the help of close friends and relatives to pack up her most essential belongings and park herself on the steps of government headquarters (minus the kids if someone will look after them – no unnecessary child endangerment – but if not even the Child Care Board will take them temporary, then she should camp out with the kids), until the authorities take her situation seriously and err on the side of caution by not only relocating Mrs. Greenidge but also removing any other citizens in the immediate zone of suspicious earth movement/sinking. She also needs to have the media tipped off to be on hand when she arrives at government headquarters. If they have her arrested and confined, at least she will be safe from “physically” harm (hopefully). Media pressure and national outrage should force an immediate rectification of her situation.

I am pleased to see that many persons share a genuine concern for this woman but concern must always give way to focused thought on the optimal course of action and then action on your part to communicate your ideas on what can and should be done. It matters not if your thinking is flawed; what matters is that you are contributing to the identification and ratification of the optimal immediate course of action.

Then, if at all possible, we should PERSONALLY and SELFLESSLY offer whatever support and assistance we can to neutralize the threat to life, BEFORE a disaster occurs, rather than waiting to donate a few dollars to greiving relatives AFTER the worse has occurred.

I stand ready to do whatever is in my power to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion as a matter of urgency, before it turns into a very bad situation.

What she needs is someone to be her advocate.
If you want to help, contact her MP and the opposition candidate representing her area.

Elections coming. She will get help.

  22. Hydro

Susan you need to get out of the house. I am a hydrogeologist and the sinkhole that is forming beneath your house is not going to get better. The number of holes that you are finding concerns me about the possible size of the hole(s) that is beneath your house. Essentially what is happening is that the bedrock or soil beneath your house is being washed away causing holes to be formed. It will continue to wash away and it will be come less and less stable. Think of it like swiss cheese.

It is possible to grout the holes but it should have someone qualified to do it. You want to make sure that you fill the entire hole from the bottom to the top. The hole beneath the surface is often much larger than what you see on the surface. It can be ridiculously expensive to grout it. I worked on an industrial site with a history of sinkholes. They spent $60,000 to grout one sinkhole.

I hope that you and your family are safe.

Susan Greenidge…..I guess after reading page 7 of the Nation News of October 23 2007……you would now understand why Hammie La ain’t responding !

After 8 years KILLING & DYING for Owen Arthur….Hammie La says he done with that !

Equally revealing is the fact that on Sunday 14th October…..Owen sent a uniformed policemen in a police vehicle to bring Hammie La to a private one & one meeting at Ilaro Court…….well those within earshot were ASTOUNDED by the words & utter refusal shown by Hammie La !

Further indications revealed that this call for a meeting by Owen had to do with comments attributed to Hammie La in the Sunday Sun of 14th October 2007 !

Those who can get a glimpse of that paper’s edition would catch Hammie La’s DRIFT !

So in a short space of time Owen hard to deal with…..DRIFTWOOD & HARDWOOD…!

Those in St. Philip South wondering when he gine get ’round to DEADWOOD….!

In fairness to Lashley at least he has the will to say enough is enough and step down, unlike ones like Mottley who has taken endless abuse but still suckers up to him like a lost child.
it appears to me that Prescod also seems to be making moves to escape the tag of corruption and dishonesty.

  28. Wishing in Vain

I have been checking the above story and reports reaching me state that yes this actually did take place and the meeting was called as a result of Lashley’s utterances on the issue of the squatters and he was taken to task and dressed down like a little boy for his pronouncements on the matter, so it will be fair to expect the same dressing down to take place with Prescod as well, because he has dared Owing and has said what he has had to say on the subject of the same squatters.

I am waiting to hear Mottley have her say on the HARDWOOD HOUSING ISSUE AND ASSCOLL issue, I am sure she will not be singing his praise.

She is either a spineless creature or brainless and moraless if after all the insults that Owing has thrown at her she has no fortitude to say enough is enough I will stand up on my own two feet and fight back this short runt, but instead she takes it all lying down and comes out of it looking a total servant to his needs.

Lashley you to need to rethink your stance and remove yourself from this kind of abuse and torture, you have lost and will continue to loose the respect of the people that voted for you if you do not stand up and say enough is enough, you will gain much more respect is doing so as opposed to representing a party that is at sea with your ideas.

Once again this same Government we have is stepping over the small man/woman who is crying out…. No doubt it is because she isn’t running to them with *fists* full of money to keep government ministers entertained….

These cronies in office need such a far kick from the island that it isn’t even funny… Why is it everyone have to put up with such a hard time just to reach the government unless you embarrass dem all to pieces?

Yes Wishing in Vain……Mia ” MOUTHLY ” (dangerous teeth in there ! ) has told Owen & gang that she ain’t leading the party into the next general elections….!

That task has now been thrown at retired Billie Miller……..not sure how she would be looking out for ASSCOLL’s interest in the BIG race……since she had declared ASSCOLL…….” Malik without teeth ”

You go Billie……that is a HARD one !

For what reason are we comparing the Leader of the H M Loyal Opposition Mr David Thompson to a drunk womaniser Owing See Thru Rum Arthur?

When really the only reason is for Owing to carry this lame bunch into elections hopefully for him to win it for them and shortly thereafter to have him replaced as PM and head of the party.
He is tired and he is making a lot of very bad decisions that are affecting all of us taxpayers, our public servants are constantly crying out for their wages from gov’t, they have been involved in cost overuns on every single project that they have touched, even at Oistin this work is behind schedule and over budget and now the BTIC is coming forward to pay the bills in the hope that it will finish, the PRISON three times over cost, the road works three times over cost, and where do you suppose these cost overruns are ending up ?

In the bank accounts of the Owing’s the Nicholl’s the Bannister’s, the Shorey’s.

Least we forget his deposit of his cheque for $ 750,000.00 to his PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT this is wholesale fraud that we are powerless to address but time will assist in putting all these ills right.
While on the subject of ills tell me what has Ms Walcott achieved during his term as Minister of Health?

The hospital is certainly worst off now than when he took it over, very much the case with Tourism our airport is less functional today than before they destroyed the old building etc and the Minister is living in a $$$ million $$$ home and has spent in excess of another million dollars in renovations to his estate home doing all of this on the slender salary of minister of gov’t, but gets all flustered when he is asked where he amassed his wealth from in 3 short years.

Why are we considering that Owing will be involved in politics for another term when he was all set to step aside and let Mottley run the ship but then he wrote those questions and told the interviewer to ask Mottley about Condoms in Prison and same sex marriages and legalising prostitution and homosexuality and low and behold she fell for the bait and then Owing beat her into submission and has completely broken her spirit.

Owing will not endue the leadership of the party and will be overthrown or ousted from his post so why even factor him into any future equations?
He is at war with so many of his members he is luck to be able to count 10 loyal supporters to himself, look at his most recent encounter with Haamy Lashley who has served him well but his use has expired to Owing so he is now treated like a piece of trash and destroyed.

Where is the entrepreneurial spirit when you can access $ 2 million in government funds to
    * buy equipment in your own name…..only to lease it back to the same company ?
    * write bounced cheques to companies including government agencies ?
    * employ illegal workers while Bajans are given weed wackers ?
    * when we now hearing that this “small man ” never built 500 houses ?
    * only 15 houses framed out lying down in the factory ?

‘the DLP has sought to destroy Clyde Mascoll’s credibility’
I am afraid it didn’t take the DLP.
Mr Mascoll has done it to himself.
Just read his public utterings including ‘neither here or there’ when referring to whether or not Mr Murrell had built ‘500 houses in Grenada in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan’.
Of course he still hasn’t answered the question about the lease-back by Mr Murrell to the company and the over ‘$44,000′ saving it brought to HHF Inc.
Or the land the company ‘HAD acquired’ in St. Peter and Christ Church according to a statement made to the Nation on 9th July 2007.
And as for the ‘GEMS GLOW’ article published in the Nation 17th September 2007 and the ‘gem’ of a statement ‘the companies now are in a far better position to manage their current cost’.
This really demostrates his financial genius, as audited accounts have NOT been made available from 2001.
Imagine running a country on this crystal ball gazing and second-guessing philosophy?
Keep on going Mr Mascoll and you will bring them all down.

  33. Wishing in Vain

It certainly appears to me from all the actions and reactions that Owing Arthur is in self destruct mode with not much help coming from his members within his cabinet or generally from the elected members of the house, if we consider the relationships between himself and Mottley who has been dismissed and put out to pasture, Liz Thompson who has been fired and rehired why?, Rommel Marshall for stealing a mere $ 500,000.00 when Owing has stolen in excess of $ 200 million but has not yet been fired, Gline Clarke a wuk for wuk crook, Hammy Lashley being lambasted becuse he speaks out for the poor people, Trevor Prescod,George Payne, Ronald Toppin,Kerrie Simmons,Noeless Lynch ,Joseph Edghill,Reginald Farley,Rawle Eastmond,Anthony DEADWOOD Wood Rudy Grant, you may ask what all of the above have in common a certain distrust and hatred for Owing Arthur, why because they have all see the destruction that he has done to the party in his corrupt acts and they all know how much he and cohorts have raped this island by and they see their future as one tainted by Owings wide spread dishonesty and stealing as for the others like Dale Marshall, Lynette Eastmond,Joseph Atherley,Cynthia Forde and CLYDE MASCOLL may well be the biggest idiot with a degree but yes a total lying dishonest liar with corruption written all over him in such a short stint in the BLP cabinet just guess how the longer standing members have amassed.

This lot are there because they are in Owings hip pocket and feeding at his will.

The blp is about to implode and it will do so in such a horrendous manner that it will not be amusing.

To add insult to injury when we see his outburst and cursing towards Hammy Lashley and Steven Alleyne, is this the manner that the Prime Minister of our island is expected to behave?
I would expect a level of decency that is better than this that is on display, we need morals in office not uncouth manners.
