Almost Home To Miami After Flying Around The World Alone

At 23 years old, Barrington Irving is about to become the youngest pilot ever to fly around the world solo. He will also be the first black to do so.

Gotta love this guy because he is almost THE poster child for “I can do anything if I put my mind to it.”

Jamaican-born and then raised in Miami since he was 6 years old, Barrington lives in a neighbourhood where more than 24 young people under the age of 21 were murdered by other kids under 21 in the past year alone.

Robert and now the rest of us have been following Barrington around the world from his website – where you can get an up-to-the-second position for his aircraft thanks to the miracle of satellite communications.

You can check out Barrington’s website here.

As I am writing this a little after midnight on Monday, June 25, 2007, Barrington is on the ground in Houston, Texas with two more legs left on his journey.

Here is where he has been so far…

    Dear All

What a pleasure it is to read some positive news about a young black man doing something good to raise the profile of my community. And yes, I am a 40 year old black man living in the UK who runs a very successful financial services business. I am not the sort of person that will make headline news here in the UK, and as harsh as it sounds, unless I commit a crime, or something worse, I am one of the growing numbers of successful members of the black community here in the UK doing well for themselves who does not fit the racial stereotyping that the British media seem to project about my community.

I have emailed this story to all the mainstream media outlets that I can find, and why, because a search of the news archives here in the UK of the majority of the mainstream news outlets are NOT carrying this story.

I urge all the positive people of the world of all races, who know the truth about my community and who are reading this posting, to do the same as I did, and to circulate this story as far wide as you can.

  2. Wishing in Vain

This is one brilliant and motivated young man all power to him on his future endeavours.
At least this is one great story with a Jamaicaian background that is not about crime and violence and killing.
Very well done to BFP for having the wisdom to highlight it.

  3. Bimbro

That’s it, let’s sweep the crime and murder and bullying under the carpet. Let’s pretend it does n’t exist. That’s the way to solve it.

Shall we give as much exposure to the crime?

  4. I think you are missing the point Bimbro, if you read the messages above, no one is suggesting that we sweep anything under the carpet, all I am saying is that lets balance the news reports, lets report something positive, lets give the young black men who are commiting crime a positive role model, someone to aspire to……….lets look at the positive side of being black!!

  5. Bimbro

What do you think of the chances that he’s Jamaican!

Just keeping this in its true, perspective!

  6. Michael. Milton Keynes, Uk

Just the point I make in my first posting, and no, he may not be Jamaican at all, speak when you know the facts. I find your comments degrading to Jamaicans, and I am not of Jamaican heritage.

You are falling into the very deep hole of racial stereotyping……and for your information, just last week, I heard of an incident here in the UK where a black boy was racially attacked by a gang of white youths, and this story was not carried anywhere in the media…..but its not about back and white, its about having positive news storys put out in the media.

  7. Bimbro

……….lets look at the positive side of being black!!

    ***********************

There’s no ‘positive side of being black, in the UK’. Black people here don’t even acknowledge each other, when they’re not being actively, oppossed to one another. Black society in the UK is moribund thanks to 80% us being Jamaicans, and Africans, who hate us, so let’s not deceive the public.

  8. Bimbro

Should, preferably, say……..’ there’s no positive side to being WEST INDIAN in the UK!

  9. BFP

    Please folks!

The kid is doing something fantastic for himself, for aviation and for blacks. Think about what it took to prepare for this trip. Like Charles Lindbergh, he talked someone into donating an airplane for the flight – and obtained permission from all the various countries that he overflew.

    Think of the logistics!

It is an incredibly positive story about what a young person can do with some guts and hard work.

Don’t try and spoil it Bimbro. You are way out of line.

  10. Michael. Milton Keynes, Uk

    Errr Bimbro

I think your facts are completely wrong, 80% of the black population in the UK are NOT Jamaicans, and even if they were, so what???..what is the point that you are trying to make?.

When you say “us”, I am assuming that you are black yourself. If you are, is it not a pleasure to read a story like that of Barrington Irving rather than that of the one in the link that you provided. I invite you to circulate this story about Barrington, I certainly have.

And if I may ask, why are you soo negative about being Wesy Indian….

  11. Bimbro

BFP, I’m not ‘way out of line’. I’m keeping this in its true perspective i.e. a single, positive action compared with so many millions of negative ones!

Michael, if you read my post carefully, you would have seen that I did n’t actually, say that the offender was Jamaican. Instead, I asked the question, “what do you think of the chances of his being a Jamaican”! I think that both you and I know what those chances are! If you don’t then you’re deluding yourself!

You find my comments degrading to Jamaicans but I don’t suppose you find their frequent, actions degrading to the black race, not to mention, the human race!

    You’re remarkable, Sir!

  12. Bimbro

BFP, I can sympathise with your response but then, you don’t live here!

  13. Bimbro

Michael, 80% of west indians in the UK are Jamaicans, or of Jamaican origin. It’s a long, established fact!

  14. Wishing in Vain

Guys give it a rest accept that this younster is doing wonderfully well and is very uplifting to the blacks and more so west indian blacks.

  15. Michael. Milton Keynes, Uk

Bimbro, my oh my…you really have a major beef against Jamaicans.

There are 2.7 million people living in Jamaica, and last year, there were 1340 murders. Yes, they do have a high murder rate, infact one of the highest in the world, but lets put these facts in perspective. THE MAJORITY OF JAMAICANS are law abiding citizens, and one of their own is on the verge of being the youngest man to fly around the world solo. Lets celebrate………black and white, Jamaicans and Bimbro!!….

  16. Bimbro

I caan even be bothered to read de foolishness. So somebody’s flown around de world. Is it the first time it’s been done? I in na history graduate but I could swear that feat was first achieved, nearly 100 years ago, so what’s the big deal. My suspicion is dat you folks desperate for some little positive news to publish about Jamaica which is why you’re getting so excited about this story! Sounds like ‘scraping the barrel’ to me!

  17. Bimbro

and one of their own is on the verge of being the youngest man to fly around the world solo. Lets celebrate………black and white, Jamaicans and Bimbro!!….

    **********************

Celebrate?!!!! Yuh mean he in do it yet?!!! Lord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) Ugh hasta laugh!!!!!!!!! 🙂 LOL!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Michael. Milton Keynes, Uk

Bimbro, at the last census, there were 565,876 people of black caribbean heritate living in the UK. So by your admittance, 452,700 of these are of Jamaican heritage. If you do some research, I think that you will find that your facts are incorrect. Anyway, I shall leave the debate here, and open a bottle of my finest to celebrate the achievement of Barrington Irving, afterall, that is what I had originally started out to do in my first posting…..

  19. Bimbro

Mike, might be wiser to do it when he’s actually, completed, the journey.

  20. Bimbro

I want to celebrate a Bajan, achievement! Lord!!!

  21. Bimbro

An ugh in talkin bout cricket eida!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  22. Bimbro

All, you know what, when Jamaicans start having some regard for small-islanders, then perhaps, I’ll begin to have some, small, begrudged regard fuh dem! I got my priorities straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Pride of Barbados

BFP: “As I am writing this a little after midnight on Monday, June 25, 2007 …” WHAT? MONDAY, JUNE 25, A LITTLE AFTER MIDNIGHT? Where – on the moon? The time in Barbados right now is 5.00 a.m. Monday, June 25th. Correct me if I am wrong, but where, in the world could it possibly be after midnight, June 25th? Not even in Australia, surely. Please help me here, my maths ain’t that good.

  24. BFP

    Pride of Barbados,

You are a bit confused my friend.

You are thinking of Tuesday early morning, when this post was indeed writen “a little after midnight on Monday June 25, 2007”

    Thats 4:17am GMT

As a Bajan, and an airline captain, I heartily salute Barrington Irving’s monumental achievement. To circumnavigate the world in a commercial airliner would be an impressive feat, but to do it in a “light”, single-engined aircraft, solo, is truly impressive, especially when you look at his routings and consider some of the weather with which he would have had to contend, especially on the Mumbai-Kolkata route and the following sectors. With the onset of the monsoon season in the Far East, Barrington would have needed some pretty impressive on-board equipment, which I’m sure he had. But that does not detract from the concentration and vigilance required to successfully complete this incredible journey. And the sector from Asahikawa, Japan to Shemya, Aleutian Islands, would have brought to mind the old Merrymen song, “Too Deep, Too Blue,” with an awful lot of very cold and deep water under his aircraft, and one engine propelling him forward.

An amazing feat, and hats off to Barrington Irving, a fine role model for all young people, Black and White, of all nationalities, especially West Indian.

  27. reality check

a very high percentage of those gang members arrested ( approximately 90 persons )
in Toronto recently were Jamaicans with nothing but trouble on their mind.

Nevertheless, any young man or woman that sets out to improve his or her life in a positve manner is worthy of praise.

It really doesn’t matter what Bimbo thinks as the rest of us are looking for some positive role models and balance in our world.

  28. Bimbro

Well I suppose ugh betta read dis article as I even got an AIRLINE PILOT disagreeing wid me now! Sorry, folks but sometimes I jus caan resis de Bajan lingo!

    Geez Bimbro:

You mean even with this great achievement you cant find it in your heart to be supportive?

We should all he hailing this feat.

As an F1 fanatic ,can you imagine the joy in me every time I watch the first black man to pilot an F1 car?

Not only is he driving well,he is kicking ass……7 races,2 wins (should be 3)…podium 7 times. All this in his rookie season.

What would you say about Lewis Hamilton then?
Good things I hope …..his Grandparents are Grenadian .

Have a heart man….give credit where it is due.We blacks have to work 10 times as hard to prove ourselves….just goes to show what we can do with some determination and hard work.

  30. Bimbro up to his discrimination and loosely based facts as usual. He seems like a old vengeful troubled soul and after all these months of reading his crap and hatred toward Jamaicans on BFP I am now just sorry for him.

    Congrats on your achievement Barrington!!!!!!!!!

  31. Bimbro

You are all, of course, entitled to your individual opinions. I caan force any of yuh to agree with me and, indeed, I don’t wish to. However, I always try hard not to insult another Barbadian!

You must determine your own moral standards. I have determined mine and they don’t provide for admiring those people!

    Cheers!!!!!!!!!

  32. Yardbroom

I hope Mr. Irving is successful in his endeavour, there are times when our sons/daughters are able to go above the ordinary achievements of men, that we should salute them is not only justified on our part, but shows an acknowledgment to those who are capable of feats, which are beyond most of us.

That he is black brings a special glow to our hearts and an inspiration to our youth. You Mr. Irving has set out on the road to achievement, that step is always greater than standing still.

Once again many congratulations to you and your parents, who no doubt are justly proud of you.

  33. Zulu

Bimbro or should that be BIMBO!!
You are one sick man. No longer will I be reading anything that you post. We all applaud the young man for doing something great. He should be knighted for that. Freedom of speech is sometimes wasted on ppl like you. Too damed stupid. I am sure that you would have lost a lot of respect due to your stupidity. Get some character in yuh soul.

  34. Citizen First

I am showing this story to my children in the hope that they too will realise their dreams as Barrington Irving has done. Bravo Mr Irving!

  35. crossroads

yea bimbro what rock did you crawl out from? clearly has a chip on the shoulder, lacks self esteem, no confidence and needs a friend to hug him. i will start, so here’s a rose for you.

  36. Bimbro

  40. Bimbro

Day got an election coming up! Watch out for the murderings, shootings, killings, stabbings! Oh, no, I ferget. Portia get down pun she knees an beg dum tuh behave demselves. Let’s see if day bodda tuh tek any notice of r dis time!!!! Lord!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  41. DJ Coral D, London UK

Bimbo what have you done today to make you feel good? Its time to act your age and not your shoe size – grow up and give credit when you see it and not grudge fellow black people for their achievements regardless where they are from.
GO MAKE YOUR OWN SUCCESS then you will know how it feels to have people speak of your greatness. Right now I see a very small minded individual wrapped in sorrow and negativity, blaming others for his failures.

  42. I can’t believe that this person Bimbro is black. I think he is of a different race. That is why the black race is at the bottom. We fight and jealous of each other from day one. We are not supportive to our own people when it comes to business or when our communites need help. Caribbean people always fighting against each other. Oh, I don’t like you because you are Jamaican or Trinidian or from what ever Island. We are so divided. When you think of it, we are the same or almost the same culture, we call certain things by different names or prepare certain food different but we are all from the Caribbean Island. Again, I don’t think this retart Bimbro is from the Island, if he is I think he is jealous of Jamaicans. Why do you hate your own people? Or what Jamaicans have done to you? Please don’t lump all Jamaicans in the same category. You are lack of intelligence. I think you were either on drugs or drunk when you were posting these comments. Come to your senses and give your race some credit. You dumb skull.

  43. Congratulations Bimbro.
You are a shining example of what a forum like the “Barbados Free Press” is all about.
Without the freedom to express all opinions, many would argue that no person of African Heritage, possessed of natural common sense and the ability to make rational moral distinctions could or would speak as you do. Your existence proves this is not so and I thank you for being a robust reminder that the enemy are enlisted among our ranks and we must be ever watchful.

And thanks also for creating such a lively thread, I am enjoying it thouroughly post again soon.

    Warm Regards
    D

  46. mike

why does his skin colour have to be an issue. THey never said that when they published the stories about the youngest pilot who was white to do the same thing. we still have much to learn
