Lapdog Nation News – Serving Government, Not Citizens

Fails To Mention Billion Dollar Gambling Company Has Connections To Barbados Political Elites!

Worldwide Gambling Business Is An Ideal Vehicle For Money Laundering

You’d never know it from the article in the Nation News, but the Barbados Government has just licensed another gambling casino – this time to a mysterious gambling company that controls the name “Mapau”.

The article in the Nation News is hilarious. Obviously somebody said “Listen, we have to write a promotion piece on this new casino, but we’re not allowed to mention the words “casino” or “gambling”… and we’re not allowed to mention the name of the company. Keep it light, friendly and stress the charitable activities of the er, group of friends.”

So the reporter wrote the article “in code” without mentioning the forbidden words like “gambling” and without asking any important questions.

How is Barbados being served by reporting like this?

Did you ever see an article in The Nation News that looked at the explosion of gambling casinos in Barbados? Did you ever see an article that asked how many we have, who owns them, what the revenue flow is and how this impacts our society? Did you ever see an article in the Barbados media that commented upon the government’s mysterious casino licensing provisions and why everything is kept secret from citizens?

Of course you never saw such articles in the Nation News…

We don’t call the Barbados media “government lapdog” for nothing, you know!

Barbados Free Press looked into the story for about ten minutes and discovered a few details about this mysterious “Mapau” casino organisation. The one thing we can’t tell you is how much of a “consulting fee” they had to pay to obtain the permission of King Arthur. I’d wager that it was a pretty hefty sum!

Who Is “Mapau” ?

The article in The Nation News (Mapau Launched In Barbados) states …

REGIONAL EXPANSION of one Trinidadian company has reached Barbadian shores.

Mapau, a company formed back in 1989 by a group of friends who came together frequently, is a club which has become a place for like-minded people to meet securely and privately for recreation and entertainment. The club raises money through its initiatives in sport and charities.

In 1996, the name Mapau was licensed internationally to http://www.mapau.com.

Mapau was recently launched in Barbados at Hastings Main Road, Christ Church, and while it has a members’ club, it is also open to the public. Mapau now has locations in Africa and Europe, licensed by governments.

We will be targeting people who like to have a good time, fun, from lower class to upper class.

“Our marketing manager puts together different in-house promotions each month to attract patrons to frequent more often and karaoke every last Friday of each month,” said Sherry Persad, public relations officer in Trinidad.

Gaynell Crichlow, the local marketing officer, said there was now a charity team which would be making donations to children homes and other local organisations.

Hey – This Isn’t Only A Trinidadian Company – This Is A Barbados-Based Group!

The Group Has Paid Out Over ONE BILLION DOLLARS In Winning Bets Alone Since Inception!

So Who Is Involved With This Barbados-based Billion Dollar Gambling Organisation?

Let’s have a look at the cast of characters and corporations that we’ve tied into “Mapau”. Such a tangled web indeed…

The nominal “parent” company that supposedly “Licenced” the Mapau name… is a mystery. A WhoIS search reveals that the “owner” of one of the Mapau sub-domain names is…

Lorago Ltd.
46A Independence Square
Port Of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago
+1 868 623 4048

The chap who registered the name is Horatio Sutton – apparently of the Sutton family with ties to Barbados, according to Horatio Sutton’s family website (link here) Unknown if Mr. Sutton is a Mapau principal, employee or sub-contractor.

Sunny Group Of Companies

The company licensed by Antigua to operate online gambling under the Mapau name and others is…

Sun Gaming Services Inc.

Weatherhed Office Complex, Suite 5
Redcliffe Street ,
St.Johns, Antigua

as registered by…

Hugh C. Marshall (former Government Minister, Antigua Labour Party – ALP)
45 St. Mary’s St.
St. John’s,
Antigua
2684623562 fax: 2684623563

(Interesting point… Sun Gaming Services Inc. has only been licensed by Antigua since May 15, 2002. Presumably another front company was used before this date)

However… the Mapau.com website says “Mapau Casino is 100% owned and operated by…

Sun Internet Services Ltd.
The Old Mill,
9 Soar Lane
Leicester, Leicestershire
LE3 5DE

BUT… the another page on the Mapau site says “Mapau Casino is 100% owned and operated by…

Sun Internet Services Ltd.,

Borehamwood, Hertfordshire,
WD64PJ, England.”

More similarly-named companies are to be found…

The Sunny Group of Companies operates an affiliate marketing programme called “Sunny Diamonds” which shares the same Trinidad phone number at Mapau Casino… but when we research the domain name of sunnydiamonds.com, we find an Antigua company with Horatio Sutton as webmaster (or so they say!)…

Sun Internet Services Ltd.

Fax Direct 1-868-624-1156

The Sun Internet Services website (link here) states that this company processes it’s own internet-based transactions and payments.

And So To South Africa…

Who owns Sun Internet Services Ltd. of Antigua… or England?

The domain name SunInternetServices.Com is owned by…

Net Advertising Inc.
10 Windbeig Ave.
Devils Peak
Capetown, South Africa

26771300463
26771300463
Forde, Lisa hostmaster@netadvertisinginc.com

But the domain netadvertisinginc.com has a technical and billing contact of our old friend Horatio Sutton of Sun Internet Services in Antigua!

And On To Botswana!

From reading some of the bios on the Sunny Group’s website, we discovered that a sub-group of companies called “Edutech Group Of Companies” is headquartered in Botswana. Although the website talks about this Botswana company being involved in selling books, there is obviously much more going on in Botswana and South Africa than books.

The website of the Sunny Group of Companies has this to say about itself…

COMPANY INFORMATION

Sunny Group of Companies began in Barbados in 1981 as a distributor of educational books. The educational business has expanded over the years to include the distribution and creation of multimedia products on three continents. Sunny Group is now one of the top 4 worldwide distributors of home reference books.

The Group has expanded and continues to penetrate various markets and industries. There are now Divisions in Education, Retail, Leisure, Finance, Property Construction and Management, Software Development and Marketing.

Since 1986 the Group’s Leisure Division has owned and operated land-based casinos. Gambling Licenses are held in 6 countries on three continents. This division has expanded to include restaurants, slot machine route operations and Internet websites. In 1996 Sunny was one of the first to open a casino on the Internet.

The integration of our group’s computer, Internet and casino expertise, ensures that we can deliver to our customers, the most up-to-date technology and customer service in the exciting and dynamic cyber world. Recently the Group has begun Mobile Software Development in Eastern Europe.

The Finance Division specializes in credit card fraud control systems and e-cash processing software. The division also supervises Group Companies’
credit exposure and management worldwide.

The Advertising division specializes in Internet marketing and Public Relations. Having an early start in the field enabled us to become a leader with offices in London and New York.

The Property Management Division is concerned mainly with the in-house management of Group Company properties and rentals.

The Retail Division operates shops in England, South Africa and the Caribbean.

In the face of technological revolution, the Sunny Group of Companies has continued to align itself with innovative ideas and developments. In 2004, Sun – Gaming launched the very successful Sunny Slots T which has now thrust the Group into the global market of Mobile technology.

I Wonder If Any Barbados Government Members Have Shares In This Worldwide Organisation?

So many companies with similar or exactly the same names operating in so many jurisdictions – in England, USA, Antigua, Barbados, Trinidad, South Africa, Botswana. Has the “Sunny Group of Companies” established different companies that use the same names in different countries? That is a red flag for money laundering if ever there was one!

Money Laundering Made Easy!

With the ability of the Sunny Group Of Companies to make “gambling payouts” anywhere in the world (even to your charge card), it is an ideal vehicle for paying off anyone who needs to be “paid off”. Who is to say who won a big online bet and who didn’t? Does the Prime Minister “win” money every once in a while by gambling online? Does Sunny “pay off” his winnings to one of his offshore bank accounts or credit cards? Or perhaps the Prime Minister’s wife gambles and wins big every so often?

We already saw Prime Minister Owen Arthur admit in parliament before all that he deposited a “campaign donation” cheque into his personal bank account. It is therefore no stretch at all to think that Mapau might have made a “campaign donation” into his personal offshore bank account.

As the Mapau online gambling website says… So many ways to win!

    here we go again!

First of all I would like to know whether this type of club is legal in Barbados.

Mapau is dumping on Barbados what they can or will no longer be able to do in the near future. If we are not careful we will soon attract the same bad habits and crime and killings and kidnappings as occur in Trinidad. We have to protest the presence of this activity on the island and here is why.

Patrick Manning had this to say during the Trinidad and Tobago 2005-2006 Budget:
One final word on taxation, Mr. Speaker, and it has to do with gambling. As you know, gambling is against the laws of Trinidad and Tobago and this Government is determined to uphold the law. There has unfortunately been a proliferation of gambling activity under the guise of private members clubs. Over the years we have sought to use financial mechanisms to contain the number of such clubs without much success.

The new approach we intend to take is to bring all private members clubs under a strict licensing arrangement to be administered by the Ministry of Finance. Under the proposed licensing regime, only genuine private Members Clubs will be permitted to operate and there will be restrictions on the types of activity in which they can legitimately engage.

Also in 2006 Manning made it clear that gambling was impacting negatively on the Trinidad society and on family values and as a result the Gov’t decided to ban gamling. The below article confirms this:

    Thursday, October 5th, 2006
Â Less than a week after the US government announced new legislation effectively banning online gambling, Trinidad is moving forward with a similar agenda.

In a move that comes on the heels of a recent ban on casino slot machines, conservative Prime Minister Patrick Manning alleges that gambling in any form strains family relations and encourages the proliferation of vices. Manning would also like ax the country’s national lottery as well. While commanding majority support in the twin island country that also includes oil rich Tobago, passage of an online gambling ban is assured.

Saying that gambling activities are of great concern to his government, Manning has yet to set a timetable or manner of enforcing the impending anti-gambling measure. In crushing the multi-billion dollar online gambling trade in their country, the US will halt banks from accepting internet gambling transactions including the use of credit cards, electronic fund transfers and checks. The shunning of the online gambling trade by Trinidad is seen as ironic considering many of the industry’s largest companies operate in the Caribbean.

Wonder if Geoff Atkinson is the accountant and part time magician JonJo who was involved with Rockley Golf and Country Club.

I have not heard his name called for ages nor have I seen him around.

What on earth would Waldo be doing in there?

  4. John

    Apologies

I just found the bio and picture of Geoff Atkinson on the site and it looks as though there are two different people.

  5. John

I am guessing that there can be only one Waldo Waldron-Ramsay who attracted some notoriety with his diplomatic dog.

No pictures or bio just a statement so can’t swear he is the same one we all got to know of back in the 70’s.

I loved the educational book touch—wonder what they really had in sales and what percentage is gambling and what percentage is non-gambling.
One can certainly guess which division is most profitable.

  11. No-name

The company is probably coming to Barbados because Patrick Manning is in the process of banning gambling in Trinidad.

The nation also had a picture of David Thompson and his wife chatting with one of the Directors of the company.

Manning has declared war on gambling see http://www.knowprose.com/node/8716 re: One final word on taxation, Mr. Speaker, and it has to do with gambling. As you know, gambling is against the laws of Trinidad and Tobago and this Government is determined to uphold the law. Did the Barbados Government copy the name Edutech from Sunny or did Sunny copy it from the Barbados Government?

  13. Hants

So is this licensed as a “SLOT machine only Arcade” or a Real Gambling Casino with Roulette, BlackJack tables etc.???

I accept that Barbados has enough Slot Machine Arcades that collectively equates to aCanadian Racetrack Slot Machine operation (google “slots at woodbine) where they have a “Giant gaming facility with 1900 slot machines ”

But a Casino is supposed to have Card games etc.

The comment moderation software is a system piece and often beyond our control. Although we can feed in words or IP addresses to either go to moderation or straight to the garbage, it often grabs comments for no apparent reason.

When Clive was at school, he had to log in most of the time as a BFP user or his comment was moderated.

“So is this licensed as a “SLOT machine only Arcade” or a Real Gambling Casino with Roulette, BlackJack tables etc.???”

Let’s have that discussion folks. To me, the difference is only in the games… much like trying to differentiate two types of prostitutes – one who “only” does a monica lewinksky and one who takes off all her clothes.

The goveernment tries to pretend that slot machines are not gambling, are not a “casino”, when everywhere else in the world slots require a casino license.

ALSO Mapau has it’s online casino available for patrons – with electronic blackjack, poker, keno and all the other games available and being played.

ALSO the Private Members Clubs that Mapau set up in Trini had “card rooms” in the back.

A casino is a casino to most of the world.

    george

  18. Justasking

Good work BFP. We are so lucky that here in Barbados we do not have casinos where poor people can go and lose their meager earnings in the hope of a big win.

They can only play the slots, buy lottery tickets and play the pools. Ever notice where the location of these establishments are and their clientele? Ever check the Marhill St. area where the majority of gambling establishments are located? Make a visit and see who their customers are. Well I can tell you. Ordinary working class Barbadians.

Always wondered why permission was given to set up a gambling establishment right in the heart of Oistins.

The whole subject of gambling/casinos in Barbados is one of hypocrisy.

Maipu’s PR says “and while it has a members’ club, it is also open to the public.”. Wow, wonder how you become a member? Guess you just walk right in and “voila” you are a member! This establishment like all other gambling dens in Barbados is targeted at the so called “masses”.

  19. This is what I can’t understand, we have slots and lottery – what’s the big deal of carrying it fwd to a casino? We are already halfway there! Just make sure the casino is like Cuba and restrict local folks from losing their shirts in them, leave it to foreigners only!

  20. Eeuuwww!

Speaking of slot machine ‘arcades’ ..
there’s a dive on the South Coast that used to be formerly a respectable hotel called the Caribee.

Now it looks like a whorehouse(rooms by the hour?) with a few slots downstairs.
I could be entirely wrong, and hope I am,
but the place now looks verrry cheezey to me!
I remember it as the rather pleasant Caribee Hotel, with an entertainment top deck.
    but not now!

I’m in total agreement with Ian Bourne over permitting casinos….”restrict local folks from losing their shirts in them, leave it to foreigners only!”
    He’s right.
    Minimum entrance fee Bds.$500.
If you are dumb enough, and rich enough, to pay that kinda $$ to get in, you deserve to be fleeced.

But the truth is that Bajans have long ago made up their little minds to brand all casino gambling as “Mafia” whatever that is,these days!

It’s all about national emotion, just like how Barbados is simply ‘the BEST place in the world to live, bar none’. Whoooeeee!
How incredibly infantile our thinking is, at times.

  23. Lady Anon

Slots and casinos are not the only way. Can anyone tell me who is behind those annoying ads on TV promoting the 1 900 ???? to call your answer or text WIN (space) A, B or C?

The cost is $2.30 per call or text, and the prize is $500.00.

(No, I have not tried but after hearing the darn thing over and over and over again, it sorta stuck)

    My Loyal Subjects,

It pleases me greatly to see that, some 100 years after my demise, you are still as hypocritical as the solid sentiments and social mores generated during my long reign from 1837 until Jan. 1901.

My work, after the sudden death of my beloved Prince Albert continues to bear fruit, I see,
and I continue to approve of your expressed public sentiments ‘anti-anything’,
while covertly proceeding with whatever you feel like doing privately, as long as it’s not in the public eye.

This subterfuge worked well during my long reign, and obviously continues to do so, particularly in small-minded, small island-colonies,
even though I’m informed many of my Colonies have been granted independence, against my express wishes, dammit.(oh dear…that last bit wasn’t very Regal, was it?).

Please continue to hold close to your hearts,
such good and solid sentiments as
‘Gambling is inherently bad and evil’,
‘Sex is a definite Sin to be avoided for all but procreational purposes’
and ‘keeping the underclasses firmly in their place’!

From time to time I shall address you,
to inform you of my pleasure or displeasure, as it suits me,
and so I now bid thee farewell, with the assurance that, on this occasion at least, we are amused!

    Victoria, Regina.

For once I have to agree with Royalrumble. (Never saw that coming did you, RR?)

Mapau are the same people that were ready to, or did, bail out Donald Trump in 2004 when Trump Casinos was in trouble. Some folks were talking about Trump and Thompson meeting and Thompson never denied it.

On the other hand, it is the BLP who are embracing casinos and gambling – so in this regard there are no differences between the two parties.

    Royalrumble,

The questions you & the BLP need to answer for Barbadians :

*** How much did the BLP government get by giving a licence to this gambling company ?

*** By pushing this type of gambling is that part of Arthur’s ” moral crusade ? ”

*** After Owen Arthur gives permission to Mapau can he still claim that it is the DLP who is pushing gambling ?

*** Does Owen Arthur gamble ?

  30. Economix

Barbados is very dependent on Tourism.
    Very.

    Bahamas has casino gambling
    Antigua has/had? casino gambling,
    so does St.Vincent.

I don’t see a fallen sky over any of them.

We may not want casino gambling,
but if we continue to live like there’s no tomorrow,economy-wise
    we neeed Casino Gambling.

It won’t make us any more or less corrupt, or susceptible to corruption than we are already, whether or not compared to other nearby islands already benefiting from it
coz we done dey, already, just dat we don’t like to admit it, and fancy ourselves to be superior to those other ‘small islands’ like Trinidad(1,864 sq.mi) and St.Lucia(238 sq. mi.)!

  36. Rumplestilskin

Given that the Oxford Dictionary defines casino being a public place for gambling, I really see little merit in the regular public discussions and outcries as to whether it should be legalised here.

    It effectively already has been.

What is the issue is WHO has the licenses to be able to corner the market. As with many things, it should not be within the hands of just a privileged few, which it is and which is THE issue.

The few who benefit from the ‘public outcires’….hmmm, so I wonder who IS behind these occasional blustery rants?

As long as you can put up a ‘decent’ establishment, which is NOT what most of the casinos here, usually walk in short and T-SHIRT establishments without any class whatsoever, then the license should be forthcoming.

    Otherwise ban them all.

But no, certain people gets to make alla de money for themselves.

    Give me a break.

Seems like only certain people gets to develop certain land, set up fast food, run casinos.

  37. Gamble?

“*** Does Owen Arthur gamble ?” he asks!

Don’t get frighten yet. Owen is still the leader and boss crook. DT has no intention of taking his place as the boss crook leader either. Probably the Mapau bosses, unlike the BLP, had the common courtesy to invite DT to the function because he is leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, something the uncouth louts in your posse fail to do, even for official occassions. You can only read something else in it if you know what your leader is accustomed to doing and you feel DT would do the same thing. “Takes one to know one” syndrome.

Did you know that the Casino Business is a Trillion Dollar business not million or even billion dollar but “Trillion”.

. . . and that it in many case it is tied in with international organised crime. Many of the casinos in Las Vegas got their start as a means of money laundering so as to legitimise old mob families trying to become “legit”. But once a crook . . . .

A NEW WAVE OF GAMBLING is about to lash Barbadian shores.

The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) has hired a Puerto Rican company with interests in Las Vegas to set up 2 500 gambling machines across the island.

That company, Cage Caribbean, has incorporated a local subsidiary, CAGE Barbados Inc., to execute the contract to install and operate, on behalf of the BCA, hundreds of video lottery terminals (VTLs), and it is working with North American entity RJL Companies, which is operated by Robert Johnson, the founder and former owner of Black Entertainment Television (BET).

Vernon Williams, former chairman of the Lottery Committee of the BCA, confirmed yesterday that the gaming machines were coming, but he could not confirm the number or the start-up date.

SUNDAY SUN investigations revealed however, that the BCA and its partners can expect to face a barrage of bouncers from operators of existing gaming arcades, who dispatched a letter of objection to the Betting and Gaming Commission earlier this year, charging they never got a reply, or a requested meeting.

Just last week the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper quoted Bob Washington, chairman and chief executive officer of Caribbean CAGE, a company he co-founded with Johnson, as stating: “This long-term management agreement is an integral step towards fulfilling our strategy of a significant presence throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.”

    Caribbean connections

CAGE Caribbean, which is based in Puerto Rico, and maintains an office in Las Vegas, Nevada, already operates VTLs in the Turks and Caicos, and St Kitts.

Additionally, Johnson was reported to have told the newspaper: “We are pleased to enter into a business relationship with Barbados. Our ability to drive returns is good for Barbados and good for CAGE.”

According to Williams, CAGE Barbados will be operating the gambling machines “lock, stock and barrel” under licences which are owned by the BCA. So far, Williams said, the BCA had approval for four games on each machine, and was pursuing approval for another two.

Where the machines would be placed, he added, would be decided by CAGE, since “that would be an operational decision”.

“What we expect is that those machines would be placed in locations that would be most beneficial for the BCA,” Williams said, adding that while local cricket’s governing body held the licence, its partners in the venture were the National Sports Council, the Barbados Turf Club and Olympio Lotteries.

Last week a senior official of the Ministry of Finance confirmed that permission had already been granted for the importation of the gaming machines.

The last was heard from them on Love 104.1 FM when they ran a half hr ad and all they said for address was Hastings, nothing else – they evn had a fancy jingle too

BUT CHECK THIS – You recall late in 2007 before elections that Davey met with some MaPau folk, then there was a BLP ad during voting accusing Davey of clearing machines at Port if he won

THERE ARE VIDEO ARCADE SLOT MACHINES AT MAPU, BUT NO CERTIFICATE WAS SEEN AS TO HOW THEY REACH

OH, DAVEY? How they get here, corporate jet?

Build a grand casino where US$, pounds or euros are the currencies of play and employ about a thousand Barbadians. The amount of foreign exchange collected will be staggering. Use these revenues to build a world class hospital and about a hundred schools. This is done throughout North America with much success.
