Why Can’t Barbados Government Hotels Do This Well?

peach-and-quiet-barbados-hotel.jpg

“Peach and Quiet, our small hotel, is a 2 star plus budget property but we have still managed to win several awards including Fodors First Choice and Best Bargain Caribbean Trip Advisor. From 1st January until 30th April this year our average occupancy has been 96%…” … Adrian Loveridge, owner of Peach & Quiet Resort

Government Doesn’t Understand The Difference Between “Investment” and “Scheme” – So They Should Stay Out Of “Business”

We hear government Ministers talking about “investing tax dollars” in this or that, but we never hear them talking about “return on investment”. They always try to talk as if they are in business, when one look at the sad state of government “investments” should tell us that the typical government minister knows zero about running a business.

Having a never ending bank account of tax dollars to cover up mistake after mistake is not being “in business”.

More often than not, our elected representatives seem to think that the act of being elected confers some extraordinary business wisdom upon them overnight.

They behave like children experimenting in the sandbox and forget that the sand they play with is ours.

So when I read Adrian Loveridge’s comment above (link here) about his excellent occupancy rate in the middle of the poorest March and April that the hotel industry has seen in years, all I could think of was the GEMS Hotel debacle. Millions and millions of our tax dollars stolen, wasted and poured into a bottomless pit of a government “hotel business”.

Too Bad Adrian Loveridge Isn’t Black

Adrian Loveridge has proven his ability to run a business – to survive without government help, to run a “two star” establishment in such a manner that he keeps a full house and attracts awards from all over the world.

In the summer when his place closes for a month or two, he can be seen with brush and roller in hand, dressed in cut off pants and an old shirt – personally painting his front wall. He is not afraid of hard work and knows how to cut expenses, to run lean when times are bad.

He is an honest, hard working man who would be a tremendous asset to this country if he could be persuaded to be elected to public service…

But that will never happen.

Despite all his knowledge and proven love for Barbados, Adrian Loveridge is not electable.

He is white.

    Well done Peach and Quiet.

    You make Barbados proud.

Has there ever been any question that private ownership and entrepreneurship are the way to operate?

History is replete with financial disasters foisted on tax payers by politicians who think being elected as lawmakers makes them into business experts. To add insult to injury these same clowns then decide they are worth more than they are being paid and help themselves to our money.

A businessman uses his own money and either wins or loses.

A politician uses our money and plays heads I win tails you lose.

When is someone going to put a stop to this?

Great job peach and quiet and thanks Adrian for all of your informatve and factual narratives. Maybe the next government will be wise enough to draw on your many years of experience an
your expertise to help move tourism in the right direction.

    He is white.

I think it has more to do with his ability to show up the short comings of the ruling party as opposed to him being white.
Remember…for a long time when a black man gives advice in this country,it is usually ignored..we tend to listen to what a ‘white man’ has to say first (traits of the inferiority complex found in blacks).

  4. sis

Well Chase, Noel Lynch sure as Hell not listening to Adrian Loveridge or anybody else because he knows everything already.

  5. ??

Dave Crawford, while Aderian L does produce some small degree of factual information the vast majority of his retoric is FICTION

  6. Adrian Loveridge

    ??

I keep asking you and you keep avoiding the question, exactly WHAT have I ever said has been fiction?

I am sure you would believe me if I said:

‘90,000’ long stay visitors here for the CWC final.
    plus
    ‘75,000 cruise ship passengers’

    ‘700 yachts’

‘Less than 500 luxury villa rooms’

  7. ??

    Adrian
We can start with your statement recently that hundreds left WI VS England game because of heat after lunch… simply not true I was there and if anything crowd increased after lunch.

  8. Chase

    Sis:

My point exactly….the fact that AL knows how to run a business sucessfully is in direct conflict with those who only want to fleece the economy, whether it be BLP,NDP,PEP…..Stay where you are AL…let them hang themselves.

??…you have been called, state your facts, show the man where the fiction is ..or shut to hell up!!

Be man enough to prove the man wrong!!

  9. Adrian Loveridge

    ??

I was there too, and I followed the crowds out of the ground.

  10. happy

Has anyone checked the attendance of Savannah and the Gems Properties?

  11. Marcus2

    Oh please!
This is a “you scratch my back and I will scratch yours” situation?
Andrian Loveridge supporting BFP and then they return the favour?
Is Adrian Loveridge starting his election campaign early?
Adrian, you will never become Minister Of Tourism!
Don’t let the DLP and BFP fool you. You are not qualified enough.

  12. BFP

    Hello Marcus2

We said that Adrian Loveridge would never be elected.

Isn’t that good enough, or do you have to spread your poison?

    BYE THE WAY…

The handle “MARCUS” is taken on this blog… so switch your name to something else.

You will not be allowed to use the handle “Marcus2” any longer, except for one more post where you can freely announce your new name.

    Robert

  13. BFP

    ONE MORE THING, Marcus2…

Why can’t the government hotels do this well?

    Robert

  14. Straight talk

oh please Mucus 2 answer the man’s questions, or shut the f*** *p.

AL has demonstrated in every one of his comments, GOVERNMENT PRONOUNCEMENTS.
If you really want to attack the statistics, go to the source.
If Adrian ever had any intention of becoming Minister of Tourism, which I seriously doubt, I would discourage him, not on race grounds but the obvious fact that common sense decisions will never work over here unless certain big-up needs are satisfied.
And I believe the man is far above the cess pit which is Barbados’ politics

  15. Chase

Geez BFP…..you all make some great points and then do something petty.
So what if there is another Marcus on BFP…the fact that there is a 1,2,3etc.should be enough to see the differance….any other site would not let you have an identical name but if you add a number there is a big differance………that was sooo petty on your part.If there are duplicate Marcus2…I stand corrected…if not then shame on you for being so petty.
In your haste and passion you all are starting to look like the very people you condemn.

    Hi Chase,

No punishment from us old friend. We only punish for a few things around here. #1 is hate speech, #2 is language and #3 is using multiple names to stage phony discussions.

Marcus2 is guilty of #3, so I have decided to push back.

While we have been known to be petty on occasion, we mostly let folks do as they please around here. In the case of Marcus2, I have decided to push back a bit. If any of our other editors have a problem with that, we will settle it over a beer at the big celebration tomorrow night.

    Robert

  16. Chase

    I await my punishment.

  17. Get In The Action

Adrian L – I do not know the fiction that ?? speaks of. Most of the points that you bring to this site are absolute fact. However on the point of hundreds leaving the Oval during that match, I also was there and I did not see it. The Oval was packed through to the last ball.

  18. Straight talk

Let Marcus 2 appear on this site in whatever guise is necessary to protect his identity and dubious opinions.
If his ramblings are the only solutions he can offer to the sufferings of Bajans and their real needs, we need to hear, comprehend, and dismiss this party political crap.
    He living on another island.

I have just returned from the Carnival Destiny Trip 30 April – 04 May 2007. The trip was wonderful and most enjoyable so thanks to the tax payers of Barbados for subsiding part of my vacation. The following figures were provided by one of the Carnical Destiny Directors.
    a. Number of passengers = 1550
    b. Number of passengers from Trinidad = 400 ( The reasons this figure was provided was the Trinis were first to disembarke the ship as some had a flight at 16:00 today from the airport.
Hope this sheds some extra light on that massive spend of US15$.

Oh dear, the big failing of BFP is its inability to see the obvious.
My name is not MARCUS, NITWIT ROBERT, it is Marcus2, even a blind man can see the difference! Jeeze!
No wonder you spend so much time butting your heads against a stone wall. The people of Barbados LOVE the BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY and you can not stop that. Is that too not obvious to you MORON ROBERT.
How do you expect me to change my name, my mum would be so upset.

  22. happy

I checked source who would know. Occupancy at Savannah during the entire cwc period exceeded 90%

  23. Bajanboy

I am sure the Savannah and other Gems hotels picked up some choice cricket contracts thanks to their government connections, and not due to their quality. That is the only reason they would be so full.

  24. Bakkra Johnny

Could Marcus2 please let us know what are the qualifications needed to become a Minister of Tourism ??

  25. Chase

    Ok ..Robert(BFP)

That satisfies me…..let the show go on ……..big celebration….beer….where DFX..Bajan reporter.

  26. reality check

    qualifications?

by now I think this would be obvious

the ability to lie and “tief” not only for him or herself but for Owing and his pals

  27. John

So the Bajan taxpayer also financed a wonderful vacation for 400 Trinis too.

This is all part of CSME.

Hope they had a wonderful time.

Wonder if any were from CLICO?

    Are you sure Bajanboy?
Have you ever visited or experienced Savannah or are you just making assumptions?
