  1. 75 seems to be his favourite number. 75,000 cruise ship passengers, 75,000 possible concorde visitors, what was projected to be hotel occupancy at the end of March (70%) was now 75% . Oh wait did someone not say that Owen deposited a check worth 750k? ummm seven and five.

  2. Chase

Does this clown know we have him on record…..a record he or the gov cant delete, burn or hide?

  3. No - Name

Rouse from the LOC said on radio this morning that they are expecting 11 cruise ships tomorrow with a total of 25,000 passengers; and several charters many of which will be from St.Lucia.

  4. Wishing in Vain

No – Name Yea really with this 25,000 from cruise ships it would mean that only 3,000 will be ticketed persons attending the finals from hotels and residents and citizens of the island maybe the idiot should have another 20 cruise ship in port.
I saw this morning where that crook the one that put his hand on the client fund account one Ezra Alleyne is on the war part with Mr Eversley and Mr Loveridge because they share a different view to the BLP on the success / failure of CWC we have in this country a terrible attitude towards those that have a different opinon to the BLP and for some reason these people are degraded and tormented without just cause for simply offering an alternate view what do we have on our hands a dictatorship with Owing as Hitler ?????

  5. ??

WIV, and your comments differ how?, you degrade Alleyne why? because he has a different point of view. Where were you When Sir LLoyd was raping this country? Where were you when your beloved David was a shining example of mediocrity in the Min of Finance taking instruction from IMF rep stationed in Government Headquarters, Where were you when mismanagement in proportions by the DLP larger than you and your tag team suggest are currently happening?where was your voice? Did you like it or Lump it!.

The David that was in bed with the IMF that hurt us public servants with 8% cut, is the same David you propose as the man to “save” the country.

I think you are way off base .

?? Mr Sandiford may have place a 8 % cut in public wages salaries but as we all know it had a time frame attached to it and we knew would last forever and it was for the good of the whole country actually this approach is much more palatable than what your party of crooks has installed that being 15 % VAT and still high duties and high personal taxation, there is no time limit on VAT and really all that it has managed to do is create a slush fund for them to use to carry out projects like the same CWC the Jail the flyovers from which these same ministers are making a killing in back handers to their offshore bank accounts.
You see ?? there was much sense in the 8 % cut for limited time period unlike your VAT slush fund.

This may be of a different note but it has to do wilth all the new security measures in place on the island especially at our spanking new airport.
Yesterday while I was there to see my mum off, there was a bomb scare at the BA counter.
An employee noticed a bag which was left unattended and became suspicious….the police were called in.The police cordoned of the area directly in front of the counter all the way to the drop off lane.
You could see the bag next to the counter in plain view.Shortly after ,our BombUnit (didnt even know we had one)arrived in their spanking van with Bomb Unit plastered on the side ,red and blue strobe lights and all.
This looked like a scene fresh out of CSI,NYPD etc.
The following events though looked like more of a comedy which really left me wondering what kind of training or procedures these people follow.
Can you imagine a bomb scare at BA’s counter and people checking in at AA 10 feet away?tourists and locals alike milling around the hall within mere feet of a suspected bomb? Taxis ,limos in and out….When the crew came..not one piece of protective or safety equipment, they came over ,poked a tester or two at the bag ,decided it was “safe” then proceeded to lean up on the counter and have a chat and a smile.
What really concerned me was a number things:
1.What if it was really a bomb, what about those people still checking in 10 ft away?

2.Shouldn’t the authorities have closed down the departure hall.

3.Why do we always take things for granted when next door in T&T these things are real.

4.With CWC teams passing through,I could only imagine what the fallout from this …had it been a bomb that actually exploded and killed or injured people.

We live in a different world now and to see our police being so laid back and carefree in such a serious situation really makes me wonder if we are ready .

Do we really feel that one or two nights of bars doing well will ever makeup for the loss revenue that we sustained during the peak of our tourist season? Remember hotels have been hurting from early in the year as a result of the Cricket Logistics booking but not paying for hotels rooms basicially they blocked off a number of rooms hoping for a massive onslaught of arrivals which never happened for them and which left many hotels holding empty rooms.
With the execption of the big ups in society such as some of the top dogs of ICC that are renting houses from the top end market to the tune of $ 35,000.00 per month little has filtered down to the lower levels of society, sad really the reality of this grave mistake.

  11. Marcus2

“Meanwhile, Alvin Jemmott, president of the Barbados hotel and tourism Association, said occupancy at his hotel, Divi Southwinds, was at 96 per cent and other member hotels were recording similarily high levels”.

Question: how is it that such positive news never makes it to Barbados Free Press?

96% occupancy good news by any standards!

  12. Revelation!

” CWC not suited for us” ..??

    NOW he tells us?
These guys plan our country’s future?

Geeez..I’d just as soon have ‘a Yellow Dog Democrat’ doing that!….it’s that bad, yes.

  13. Wishing in Vain

Maybe because Sandpiper / Settlers Beach has only 45 % and so to many others that maybe why.

  14. John

Today’s Nation puts the number of Caricom Visas approved at 40,000.

We know the 75,000 figure from the minister is rubbish, and what’s more, we know that he knows that we know that he knew that he was not speaking the truth.

Also, the number of visas issued to India and Pakistan, ….. blows any set of words used to say how the early exit of these countries affected CWC through the window.

If anyone can find the link in the Nation to the article it is worth posting. Maybe I read it wrong and wiser heads can set me right.

  15. John

Just some thoughts on Price Gouging.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Nation on the fate of two alleged Price Gougers.

“The charge, brought by Director of the Department of Commerce, Terry Bascombe, accused Chickmont Foods, located at Balls Plantation, Christ Church, of selling, at Warrens on February 1, this year, chicken wings – a scheduled article – at the retail price of $14 per kilo being a retail price greater than that of $4.28 which was specified opposite the schedule to the Control of Prices Regulations 1983.”

How could a price from 1983 be compared with a price of 2007, a quarter century later , and that comparison be used as the basis of a court action?

Given the authorities’ penchant for making faux pas I hope the price from 1983 was also per kilo, and not per pound!!

CWC admits freely that four years on they have prices off this planet when compared with prices in South Africa.

They actually boast that they have topped the ticket sales in a World Cup in England, and those ticket sales are more than double what they were in South Africa, four years ago.

….. and Ezra Alleyne is crowing about this!!

… and this is not price gouging?!!

Terry Bascombe seems to have had a moment when he too, like CWC prices went off this planet.

    Any comments from Lynette?

Oh oh, I forgot, this matter is sub judice!!

  16. John

…. and finally, I note Ezra Alleyne has had his feathers disturbed by a “minor innkeeper”.

It seems he read an article entitled “Ezra Alleyne’s Spin Doctor Mathematics” somewhere or the other, he doesn’t say where, so we can’t go and check to see what it really says!!! (Wink wink!!)

To make matters worse, he is ballistic that Reudon Eversley has referred to him as an “Advocat Manque” which I beieve is french for a Mannequin Advocate!!

I never knew Ezra could speak french too!!

I’ll have to read Ezra again and see if I got my facts straight.

“96% occupancy good news by any standards”
    ___________

But this is only one hotel with a limited number of rooms. Mr. Jemmott made it clear that Divi followed the recommended contract and got all their money up front. Therefore, if pple choose not to travel, it would be their loss.

Doesoccupancy in this case refer to actually occupied or just paid for?

  19. Jay

It refers to actual occupancy. The Hilton is Barbados’ second largest hotel and it is full.

  20. I remember Mia Mottely mentioning the regional cooperation on Security and other matters pertaining to said CWC was a harbinger for more integration to come.

How does the trumpeting of CWC a success for Barbados by Mottley, Owen and Lynch, and the description of it as a failure , and as awful by St. Lucia’s Tourism Minister, Allan Chastanet, strengthens Caricom relations?
    —————————————————————

As the end of the 2007 Cricket World Cup draws near, one island is already describing the event as a dismal failure in attracting visitors.

Awful is the word from St. Lucia’s Tourism Minister, Allan Chastanet.

    http://www.vob929.com/audio/news/042603.rm

Mr. Chastanet says the so-called legacy benefit described by the World Cup is fluffy, but he’s been full of praise for the management of the matches.

And, Journalist, Colin James, who has been traveling to countries involved in the World Cup, says a number of OECS countries have not seen the anticipated visitor traffic.

He says England’s tour to the Caribbean in 2004, especially for Antigua and Barbados, generated a lot more visitors than Cricket World Cup.

This is a serious plea to those in authority at the DLP -:
You need to be ready for the fight, this is a fight that we the taxpayers want you to win, please do not let that bunch of crooks return to office, we need forthright action and a plan to address the actions of these BLP clowns.
Mottley, Lynch and Owing are to be removed from power and their control they need to be taught that they cannot do as they like with the peoples monies and then enhance their own bank accounts with these illegally gotten gains.
You need to canvass every vote in every district, that comment is directed at every representative of the party get out on the streets in the villages in the back roads everywhere that there is a vote lurking.
There is a swing going on throughout the island and you need to make most of this feeling in speaking to a lady two days ago who was a strong BLP voter she stated point blank that she could not vote for them on this occassion.
It was a revelation to me that this lady could be converted and it has happened, I am sure that there are many more stories like that to be heard but you and your people need to get into every house and spread the word of change and hope.
Do not fail to expose the immoral acts of the bi Mottley, Mu Ma Lynch and the dishonesty of Glyne Clarke, Owing Arthur, William Duguid, George Payne, Liz Thompson, the ineffectiveness as a minister of Rawle Eastmond, Trevor Prescod, Anthony Wood, and the yacht owner our attorney general.

You accuse someone of disrespecting Ezra for objecting to his partisan contributions in the media. What he did is a matter of public record, his actions not me made it so, and as long as he continues to put forth his tainted partisan opinions, demanding that they be seen as constructive, educational, intelligent and worthy of consideration, I will be here and there, helping anyone who refers to his contributions as worthwhile intellectual exercises to understand the context, and history in which they are made and delivered. He is a highly compromise person politically and as such his contributions should be seen as such.

  41. ISSUES & IDEAS: Of ‘two hazards’
    Published on: 4/27/07.
    BY EZRA ALLEYNE
ONE OF THE OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS of writing a column is that one sometimes encounters a blinkered reader, who through accident or design or even blissful ignorance, misinterprets the plain meaning of simple ordinary language. “
    —————————————————————————

One of the occupational hazards of taking clients money entrusted to you, too furnish as payment for service and product is that you may become tempted.
Another hazard is that the client may become so bold as to demand and report you for taking what is his.
Another hazard is that when you seek to belittle others for their right to opinionate against your beloved political party is that they may recall your penchant for taking that which is not yours and for which you were held to account publicly.
    ———————————————————-
Quote: “Now I do not, and so far as I am able, will I ever try, to breathe the same air as this minor innkeeper who dabbles sometimes in the difficult art of self-expression in writing; but I have to respond to his wild swipe. Penned by Ezra Alleyne
    ————————
Now I am not the minor Inn keeper to whom he refers but never the less feel offended that he can be this dismissive of others while you attempt demands of us that we refrain from doing likewise onto him. Here is a man that stands guilty of the actions of a common thief and you would have me believe that to make mention of this very public fact is to be nasty towards him? I am not buying it.

  42. Economix

someone spoke earlier, describing VAT as a useful slush fund for Gov’t. to dip into.

N.I.S. and its cashpool is another.
Write them a Bond for their money. We’ll pay them back in $$ worth even less, in 10-20 yrs. time.

Dishonest accountants use a technique described as Kiting…keeping things ‘up in the air’.
It’s when things come to the ground that problems arise,
so keeping it aloft..(out of trouble..out of harm’s way..out of sight.)
can be carried on almost indefinitely, given some accounting skill.

    Lotta smoke and mirrors!

  43. Maat

Speaking of smoke and mirrors, a young lady friend is claiming that she is to be paid $150, given a free ticket to the finals and being asked to ‘entertain, dance and party’ at the match tomorrow. She claims that this is her job description in response to answering an ad. True or false?

Also I am told by a former inmate that homosexual activity is almost non existent at Harrison Point as the temporary jail does not allow for privacy. The description is of prisoners being in rows of fence type cages. The fear of being recognised as a homosexual and of being severely beaten as a result, appears to have significantly reduced the homo rapes, molestation and the need to distribute condoms. Will the design of the new prison lead to a return of the ‘bad old days’ of hidden sexual abuse, pent up anger and fear from inmates due to this and the escalation of the spreading of HIV among inmates?. How long before another riot?
Sometimes we need to learn from our mistakes and design things that are effective, even if they are not so efficient.

    Peace

  44. Jerome Hinds

    Adrian,

You are right about the Ezra Alleyne FACT file .

He is a despicable hoodlum , who glorifies & seeks to justify Arthur and the BLP’s crookedness !

He is Persona non Grata !

  45. Wishing in vain

Ezra Allyne represented the BLP in elections and therefore there can be little doubt of his loyality therefore if he writes nonsense he should expect to be attacked seriously it would be different had he been unbiased in his reporting and his stories.
There is little doubt though of his honesty that is non existant there is no such component to the make up of this man he is just a complete thief.

Apologies to all for going off topic.

  48. Adrian Loveridge

I really have no objections to be called a ‘minor innkeeper’. Its an honourable profession and it works for me.

You have to remember who we are dealing with here.

People that call early in the morning and threaten you.
People that attack you at political meetings.
Ministers that will not sit in the same radio studio with you.
People who think they can control the media.
People that publicly remove you from elected posts.

Imagine boasting about ‘$24 million’ being ‘raked-in’ by Government in ticket sales while you have squandered $30 million chartering the Carnival Destiny and while many tourism players report their worst winter season in years.

Its like saying we had 30 persons for lunch at Savannah Hotel today but we have wasted $200 million in the GEMS project so far.

This honest ‘minor innkeeper’ will go on questioning the policymakers and if enough people support me, who knows one day they will be held accountable!

  49. Rumplestilskin

A friend whoe business is tourism ancillary told me recently that they had very few bookings during this CWC period, because their ‘regular visitors’ are not here and did so to avoid CWC.

The CWC visitors are here for cricket, thus although they may take in some other things, much acillary areas suffer.

Another friend in retail noted to me that the CWC visitors mainly are of the ‘budget’ variety and not spending a lot. Cricket followers who either do not have it or who are wise with their money, I mean with airfares et al what do you want them to do, waste their funds?

    Reality.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen this is wishing in vain reporting to you from the shore of Bay Street where when I survey the waters of the Carribean sea I can see 30 yachts anchored in the bay with the remaining 670 due to arrive just before the start of play in two and half hours, so the bay is filled to capacity with these 28 cruise ships the Idiot Lynch excuse me that was meant to be Minister Lynch but I am sure that they are interchangeable so no problem there anyway these 28 cruise ships are also present with the 75,000 persons Lynch told us were arriving so to in that mix is the big disgrace sorry no I mean the Carnival Destiny which we have chartered at the mammoth cost of US $ 15 mill so the ticket sales today will just about cover our stupidity here, oh yes walking behind me on their way to the oval we have the 90,000 on shore guest droves of them making their way to the oval.
