Barbados Prime Minister Sends Our Tax Dollars As Gift To People Of Antigua

‘Fans Get Chance To Cruise To CWC Finals’

An interesting article by A. Aisha Browne appeared in Wednesday’s Antigua Sun (see below)

Perhaps Antiguans are not aware that the Barbadian Government (taxpayer) is footing the bill of US$15 million to charter Carnival Destiny.

If each of the 1,321 cabins are filled for the 19 days duration of the charter agreement at an average of US$170 per cabin per night that will return to our Government a princely total of US$4.27 million.

So those booking to travel are actually getting a real bargain subsidised by Barbadian taxpayers.

Enjoy!

Fans get chance to cruise to CWC finals

Wednesday April 11 2007
by A. Aisha Browne

Cricket enthusiasts have been given the opportunity to follow the CWC games while enjoying the luxuries of a Caribbean cruise.

Calling it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for Caribbean residents, President of Antigua & Barbuda’s Cruise Tourism Association Nathan Dundas revealed yesterday that the government of Barbados, in collaboration with the Carnival Destiny has embarked on an initiative whereby fans will have the opportunity of catching the CWC semi-finals in St. Lucia and the finals in Barbados.

The Carnival Destiny which calls to Antigua weekly – on Fridays – has been chartered by the government of Barbados to handle the accommodation needs that were anticipated for the CWC. Dundas explained that since the projected numbers fell significantly short of target, countries which had commissioned the cruise lines as accommodations also suffered considerable loss as they were unable to achieve their desired results. Hence, the joint venture between the cruise line and Barbados. Dundas added that who added that after first taking a flight to Barbados, “Fans will be able to journey between Barbados and St. Lucia by means of the ship sailing between those two ports.

(snip)

The main incentive according to Dundas is the added luxury of a cruise experience at extremely good rates. These rates, he noted, are a “steal of a deal” and range from US$170 for double occupancy interior rooms to US$505 for the lavish Penthouse Suite. Every third and fourth person will be charged an additional US$40 per person.

Additionally, passengers will not only enjoy the amenities of a cruise ship, but also satellite feed of selected matches and a variety of entertainment to include spectacular Vegas-style production shows.

Another advantage of such initiative Dundas was quick to point out was that many people desirous of taking a cruise have been deterred by the visa requirements.

“Here’s an opportunity especially for those who don’t have a visa and who can afford the airfare as well as the cruise,” he said.

“If it comes to a point where we have enough persons or a lot of interest, then we can look at chartering of flights which will turn out to be much cheaper…the more persons, the lesser the airfare cost,” explained Dundas.

Dundas noted that the government of Antigua & Barbuda has fully endorsed the project and added, “I hope that PM Spencer will be joining us on the cruise along with Minister Harold Lovell…they have given the project the green light.”

Adrian: Its the least the Barbados govt can do for the rest of the caribbean and Antigua after ‘negotiating’ us into the fiasco that was CWC. As a matter of fact the Antiguan Govt. should demand Barbardos pay restitution for the Caricom Visa regime which has cost us taxpayers in Antigua millions of dollars. Barbados had the luxury of learning from Antigua’s experience and changing the rules (that they helped to implement) in mid-game to boost the crowd attendance at the matches. Antigua and other islands were not so fortunate. It’s your inept politicians who got us into this mess as you yourself admit.
Secondly it is Antiguans who are helping out Barbados not the other way around. We did not request the cruise ship, it was offered to so that the empty cabins could be filled and boost attendance at the matches in Barbados. The alternative is to have an ‘ empty floating elephant’ docked at Bridgetown. It was never offered for the Antiguan matches. Why not? What other choice does Barbados have? None..

  2. Adrian Loveridge

    JodiPerry..

Yes! sadly, damage control, hopefully minimise the losses to the taxpayer while Governments spends up to US$15 million to charter Carnival Destiny while our hotels have empty rooms.

Yet! up until 25th March 2007, we were being told by ‘our’ Minister of Tourism the ship was ‘80% sold’.

  3. Rumplestilskin

jodiperry – Oh that’s rubbish. Antigua has a Prime Minister and Minister of Finance too, who signed along with ‘whatever’.

Barbados owes you nothing for your own leaders incompetencies.

We do however have to deal with those of our own leaders, and our tax money should be spent here in Barbados.

  4. Rumplestilskin

By the way, the average Bajan thinks that CSME is a load of codswoddle.

Trinidad, Jamaica (which already shows no support for the CCJ, for example) will go which way suits them and Barbados will be left holding the stick and paying through the nose servicing debts for the ‘smaller’ islands such as Antigua, who can well afford their own debts (at least Antigua, which has offshore financial services and tourism, just as we do).

We just be the fools in the game.

  5. Patrick Porter

The Federation was a failure because of Trinidad and Jamaica, so here we go again
I think after reading the papers this morning that the CWC has been very sucessful. Acording to all the papers the stands were filled and everyone had a good time
Well as I have said before the papers in Barbados are in the Governments back pocket, so I am not suprised. I expect to see roses coming out of them for the next little while.
Why can’t we have an independent press in Barbados and not one controled by the Government
They are quick to tear apart everything else but not the Government, I guess censorship is in place. So they have to send their copies to the Government before they print them. The BLP has a strangle hold on everything and we can’t say anything without their approval
Barbados is in the hole for 500 million dollars and I just wonder where this money is coming from
By the way I got a call from a big BLP member last night and I know who Adrian is, so Adrian come clean. I will not release his real name and his info for 3 days unless he comes clean, if he doesn’t then I will will release it. So come on Adrian lets have the truth

  6. ??

Is Patrick Porter really Patrick Porter?? That is the question.

Hi Patrick hope your Easter break was enjoyable… Just pulling yr leg.

  7. Patrick Porter

Have you read the article in the Trinidad paper, about how great a place Barbados is to live in. I wonder if the BLP is now paying the Trinis to do good reports on Barbados, sounds strange especailly now with all the furor about the CWC. Will these thugs stop at nothing

  8. True Native

Patrick, you’re missing the point – Trinis practically OWN Barbados, so its bound to be a good place for them.

  9. jodiperry

Rumpel…: the gist of my point was that no Bds tax dollars were spent on or in Antigua. Au contraire it is the Antiguans who are subsidising the cruise ship lease by purchasing tickets.
2ndly, those ‘big islands’ attitudes is what got us into this mess in the first place where only the big three islands call the shots both in WI cricket and Caricom.
3rdly we are quite capable of paying off our loans and need or receive no help from Barbados. Frankly I have no idea of what loans your referring to..

  10. Javon Griffith

and if David wins the upcoming election (which he won’t) Clico will own Barbados.

  11. ?

    CLICO already owns Barbados.

  12. Free

    Clico does not own I & I.

  13. TriniBarLucian!

Back when our Dollars were equal, or approximately equal,
the Trinis used to come up to Barbados as younger people, and have a heckuva fun Summer.
Fabulous memories! Boys and girls having fun.
The 1970s were balmy days (retrospect being 20/20).

Trinis like to hold dear those fond memories, and fool themselves that Little Barbados is still much the same.
Now the Dollars are different, the times are different, too.
Trinis LIKE to think that cute Barbados is still the same nice Barbados they knew so well, back in the 1970s.

In exactly the same way, Bajans like to think that Trinidad is same old Disgusting Trinidad of the 1970’s, when the Telephone service absolutely SUCKED (and it did!)
and when overcrowded single-lane roads weren’t coping with the traffic
AND lane expansion was underway, to make it even worse.
    —————————————————-
    NEWS.
Both countries have changed, and it is no longer the 1970’s.
Trinidad has much improved(other than the crime situation that Bajans SO love to jump on to justify whatever!),
while darling Barbados now has AWFUL traffic snarls, ‘service’ sux(despite N.I.S.E.!),
and social problems of its own, like any developing country.
Bajans badly need to travel to Trinidad, to see what an oil-boom economy is like, and to see what Trinidad’s cost of living is like.

Trinis badly need to reform their idyllic 70s notion of Barbados, but most of them simply can’t afford Barbados, any longer,
not with our prices, and not with 3 of their Dollars making just one of ours, and a Coke is Bds.$2 = TT$6 !!!

Time for us both to get real!
Travel broadens the mind, but would we want that? or do we prefer to hold on to old favourite memories?

  14. Free

Jodiperry, is Antigua a nation of little children? I don’t think so, so try and hold your own elected leaders responsible for any negative fallout from CWC. Instead of pouting and pointing your finger, go for a sail and think about who you will be voting for in the next elections. As far as I know you live in a democracy. A little ‘bird’ told me so.

  15. Patrick Porter

    Javon Griffith

If the BLP win then COW will own Barbados and half the Caribbean. So what is your point. At least CLICO are a board of directors not a monopoly as is COW. David will not be tempted like the Arthur bunch, as they are theives and dictators. I know David and he is as honest as the day is long, so don’t come to me with that BLP crap. I wonder how many Swiss bank accounts Owing has, I know of one here in Canada and if I can get the info I will post it here on this site for all to see. I have applied for a license through the Freedom of Information Act and hopefully will get it in the next couple of months. This will let me into a lot of areas and let me do more investigation. So Javon or who ever you are, just you wait and see when I drop the bomb shell. If they move it I will be able to trace it with help from some banker friends of mine. You better tell Owing to move it quick

  16. TriniBarLucian!

“Trinis practically OWN Barbados, so its bound to be a good place for them.” – indeed they do!

And I guess they stole every single property from us!
Bajans would NEVER sell their properties to Trinidadians, would they??

Dear oh dear! how did this happen…that Trinidad could wind up owning the parts of Barbados that don’t already belong-back to ENGLAND(West Coast)??

WHO sold out Barbados, to whoever had the $loot$ to buy it?
    Did BAJANS sell out Barbados!
NO! I won’t believe it! Overly-nationalistic Bajans would NEVER do THAT!
    ‘That can’t happen HERE!’

    ROGL(= Rolling On the Ground,LAUGHING!)

Doan feel bad, doah.. coz a Jamaican guy told me that the Trinis are also buying up whatever bits of Jamaica come available.
And Grenada, and St.Vincent, Antigua and St.Lucia.
Long live The United States of Trinidad

Between UK and Trini, dey done own us lock stock and barrel.
Is WE who sell out to Dem!

Trinis are clever people, always were, hence the name we Bajans used to call them – Trickidadians.

In the past they always got the better of us and this has not changed. Trinis would not invest in Barbados unless it will pay off in the end and it will, whether we like it or not. Oil money is big money. Money talks!

Patrick, your posts are always virulently anti-BLP. So what of ??’s posts. You are David’s cheerleader and most here respect your position. But we all dont have to agree with you, and most Barbadians, wheather you like it or not, feel that David and Dem are not ready yet. Like it or lump it.

  24. ??

Patrick… lets be real here, a man is judged on his past performances, when skeletons fall out of the closet we need to worry. Note I am not suggesting that the BLP doesn’t have Skeletons but there are many postings that seem to suggest that the DLP is pure as undriven snow and we all know that is not true…

Can you believe that the vessel Silver Wind that sleeps about 300 persons left Barbados last evening with the the grand total of 14 passengers and the Carnival Destiny is travelling with 300 guest are these part of the 90,000 visitors that we are having to our shores and part of the 75,000 on thew cruise ships?

  28. Straight talk

The BBC cricket commentator yesterday said he was granted a lift from Antigua aboard Galaxy.
I don’t think I misheard him when he said there were only 2 other passengers on board as the Indians had not turned up.

I wonder if Adrian Loveridge knows that there are three Air India 747’s on the ground at GAIA Inc? I wonder why they’re here………

I also wonder if he knows that the bulk of the visitors into this island are going to the Hilton, Almond Beach Village, various apartments and yachts?

    Iwonder…..

Rumpel and Free: nothing in my post suggest that barbados should pay restitution to antigua or that antiguan politicians are not accountable for CWC my point was that bdos taxpayers money was not being spent on antigua or antiguans as adrian suggested in his post…au contraire antigua saved barbados ass by subsidising the ‘floating white elephant’ .however antigua had no choice but to pass the sunset legislation as one of the conditions to hosting matches..and if the ‘big islands’ are going to assume responsiblity for an event as huge as CWC (and every thing else) and ‘Mia Medley’ is the best they can come up with i think its time to you guys with the ‘big island/small islands’ attitude sit the next one out…namely CSME and CCJ etc…i do agree with rumpel that CSME is dead in the water judging from the caricom’s past performances….

Patrick, anyone can claim anything unless that can show proof they lose credibility, David Thompson suffered when he said he had info and would reveal it at a public meeting and did not, Then Opposition member and yes political Grasshopper Mascoll promised info on JAWS none provided.. surely others in DLP knew about it, so prove that your bank accounts are not fiction.

‘Replace ONE of the cruise liners’

‘No loan (categorically) no loan by Government to charter Carnival Destiny’.

Explain to me why yesterday, the airport looked like a Federation? Why did it take passengers as much as 90minutes to get outside the airport? Where are the people going a*shole?

I am a DLP supporter and have made no effort to hide it. But I will not stand by and have someone insult someone’s mother, I think it is totally wrong. I can attack you and you me but leave the families out of it, so you do live in Boston? When we stink to attacking each others families then we have really sunk to a new low. David’s Mother should be left out of any disourse, regardless if it is here or on the BLP blog. I came clean on Tom when will you do so?

Hey Dude i have no idea what your body size is, but the lotta bloviating that your are demonstrating with this, make me conjure up images. What is it that i said? that you have convieniently wrap in the legitimate clothing of desparaging remarks? Can you in the least recite any of the comments that i made in those threads on the BLP blog, to which you refer and from which via hear say you have conclude that i insulted someone?

Could do me a favour while we hash out this complaint of yours that is base on hearsay? Please stop telling me about yourself I am not interested.

  68. Discoveries

It takes you 90 minutes to clear customs and immigration on most days when they are two or three aircraft on the ground at the same time so what exactly is your point? Other than the airport is letharic in clearing people your ministers fault not mine.
Where are they going maybe they make up the 2 on Galaxy the 14 on the Silver Wind and the 300 on Destiny!!!!! they are not filling the many empty hotel rooms that they have available!!!

Yes that is me, have you read the entire thread? start to finish? Am i the only one that brought someone’s family into the political arena? That you would pick and choose who to highlight for this dastardly practice is to be expected given your highly publicized poltical loyalties. I will ignore your complaint as it is not genuine, but it is partisan in nature. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Now that you want to make hay out of this i will be picking up again.

I wasn’t going to, but I have to jump in here, if only to defend Patrick Porter. I stated in one of my blogs over a week ago that some names on this site were familiar names on the BLP blog and that some disgusting personal remarks had been made about Thompson and family. The comments for that particular BLP blog, “Poor Donkey” may have been removed but who knows? Someone may have saved them! Now let’s get on to other business and stop dragging decent peoples’ names through the mud. Leave that to Royalrumble.

This is the SAME political Grasshopper Mascoll promised info on JAWS …you and Owen get in BED with…!

  74. On second thoughts. I will not allow the BLP to use me the way they have Patrick Porter. That he would allow himself to be used to restart past comments at a time when they (BLP) is in the lime light for all things negative. This attempt to deflect, hide up an hoodwink, the discourse away from their well deserved embarrassment will not work with my help.

  75. ??

Jerome, I am getting a bit tired of your nasty comments, I have never insulted you and would never call you an IDIOT , DLP or any other for that matter. I am not blinded by politics or politicians… You havesaid in the past you always wondered about me and I told you you have no need to wonder. you need to undertand that everyone is entitled to their opinion and insults just make your argment less credible.. What do you have to fear.

by the way for those Barbadians who care about the future of Barbados, we don’t really want to listen to personal attacks and which party is in power but rather the substance of your governance including honest and full disclosure.

So far the BLP yardfowl are turning out to be quite a nasty bunch of incompetents. These personal vindictive attacks will surely backfire. Keep it up.

  83. GAIA

“Why did it take passengers as much as 90 minutes to get outside the airport?”

the new GAIA was/is supposed to be ‘new-improved’ to handle pax traffic more efficiently. I always assumed ‘new bldg/same ole staff’, thus no real change in speed/service, only cuter surroundings.

Why DID it take pax an hour and a half to get thru Immigration and Customs?
What WOULD it have been like, if the real real 90,000 visitors had indeed descended on us?
Dey woulda be In There for 4-5 hrs. before getting out!! that woulda look good! Maybe it’s a blessing of sorts that we only got what we got, becoz seriously larger numbers woulda bin embarrassing

So I will have to thank you all for your discussions over the last while. But will stay off this thing off the time being. 89. By the way I got a call from a big BLP member last night and I know who Adrian is, so Adrian come clean. I will not release his real name and his info for 3 days unless he comes clean, if he doesn’t then I will will release it. So come on Adrian lets have the truth.
    —————————————————————–
This is what you said. You are supporting the DLP, a so called BLP person called you to give you information about me, suggesting that I am a disgruntle BLP person who left after Bree St.John Takeover, or something to that effect. What you should have done is pause and ask yourself why would a BLP person call me and tell me about a former BLP person who said some bad things about Thompy? Does that make sense to you?

….What is clear to me is that, there cannot be a good answer for Owen on Thompy exposition of checques, deposits, and Owen’s personal account, and this is so by Owen’s own response, of making mistakes, because what Thompy revealed, tells a tale of events that the “Prevention of curruption Act of Barbados says is a misdemenour. That to silence me in whatever way they can is a worthwhile goal, and they hatched a good attempt to so do with your help.

…..But let me tell you who i am, My name is Adrian , I was born in 1965, I started following politics in 1976, I have never joined a politcal party in my life and never will. At 6ft 5in I have a hard time following or being a foot soldier for anyone as short as Owen Arthur. I tend to get confuse having to look down at anyone that i am suppose to look up too. 😀

    Fellow readers,

This how the ” Great Economist ” Owen Arthur has barbados ranked GLOBALLY…!

Countries with the LARGEST Deficits as % of GDP.

    %
    1. Iraq – 96.9

    2. Mauritania – 36 .2

    3. Azerbaijan – 30 .4

    4. Bosnia – 22 .5

    5. Lebanon – 22 .0

    6. Equatorial Guinea – 21 .9

    7. Nicaragua – 17. 0

    8. Belize – 16.7

    9. Estonia – 12 .7

    10. Suriname – 12 .4

    11. Latvia – 12 .3

    12. BARBADOS – 12 .0

Readers would find it INTERESTING to note that ZIMBABWE comes in at

    Number 23 with – 8 . 3

    All countries with NEGATIVE figures.

Source of Information : The Economist : Pocket world in figures 2007.

So the great Economist Owen Arthur has PUT Barbados ( the only top ranked English speaking country ) among the list of world nations….with the largest deficits as % of GDP….!

That is the WORLD CLASS ranking Owen Arthur often tells Barbadians to ASPIRE too..!

    Funny enough friends,

Was the Carnival Destiny not supposed to take passengers between Barbados and Grenada during this current stage of the Super 8 games ?

Then why was the Carnival Destiny TIED to the Bridgetown PORT on 2007- 04 – 12 while New Zealand played Sri Lanka in Grenada ?

And while Carnival Destiny was in the Bridgetown PORT…..Brandon’s , Accra , Miami & Gibbes BEACHES had no TOURISTS on them…!

And while Carnival Destiny was in the Bridgetown PORT….the taxi drivers had no TOURISTS to take around…..!

    Not surprising….someone said….!

Empty cabins on board Carnival Destiny…..cannot…SWIM or DRIVE around…!

And Belize isn’t hosting Cricket World Cup so they didn’t even need to blow money on a stadium. What de heck are they in money troubles from?????? Their dollar is BZ$2=US$1 (at the same rate as the Bajan$)…

The Belizean people will have to ask their government something…. Something not looking right wid that government either…. When did Clico buy Sam Lords Castle? Under Owen Arthur.
