Carnival Destiny Cruiseship Bookings “Around 40 Per Cent” !!!!!!

(Adrian Loveridge Was Correct – Minister Lynch Lied)

Cricket World Cup Trying To Buy Back Indian Tickets!

Dear Minister Lynch:

In the today’s article at The Nation News, you give as one of the reasons for the present crisis that “nobody could have predicted” the elimination of India and Pakistan from Cricket World Cup.

So we finally have confirmation from you of what we knew all along: your government’s decision to host Cricket World Cup and to pour half a billion of our tax dollars into this bread and circuses spectacle was based upon the assumption that certain sports teams would perform well.

Sir – that is gambling. A half a billion dollar gamble.

And you lost.

Trouble is, you were playing with our unborn grandchildren’s money… and probably their grandchildren’s money too.

Yours truly,

Barbados

CWC Snag

The Nation News

GOVERNMENT has set up an emergency task force to respond to “serious challenges” facing the country as a result of “a sequence of events” surrounding Cricket World Cup (CWC).

This was disclosed yesterday by Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch, who “made it clear”, however, that the challenges did not result from any policy or system failures by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration.

He told members of the St Michael West branch of the party yesterday that while the challenges were serious, “this is not the time for panic”, but for all stakeholders to work together in the interest of the country.

Recalling the celebrations that enveloped the country the night it was announced that Barbados would be hosting the CWC final, Lynch said it was clear most Barbadians supported the region’s decision to host the cricket championship.

However, the elimination of India and Pakistan, “which nobody could have predicted”; the issue of the change of dates from April and May to the current schedule because the International Cricket Council (ICC) feared rain would disrupt the programme; the hosting of the Ashes series in Australia in December even after the region complained it would draw travellers away from the Caribbean; the poor performance of a weak West Indies team; over-priced tickets; and the removal of “things like drinks and music” from games, leaving many to feel “this event is simply not a Caribbean event”, had all contributed to the current worrying situation.

He said while hotel bookings still looked good at 68 per cent to 70 per cent, there was a lot of weakness at the luxury end. Concerning the use of the Carnival Destiny cruise ship, he said that up to the elimination of India, 80 per cent of cabins had been booked. Now, he said, bookings were around 40 per cent.

In response, he said, a task force had been formed, and just recently officials had intense discussion with CWC’s managing director Chris Dehring in Barbados.

Now, with Ireland still in the tournament, a major marketing thrust was under way there, while large Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi communities, particularly in Florida, were being targeted.

Additionally, marketing has been stepped up in England, already Barbados’ leading tourism market. Already, Lynch added, there was the possibility of charter flights from Ireland and South Africa.

One major challenge in this salvage effort, the minister explained, would be trying to get back the large number of tickets which were sold in India.

“The window is short, but we are working as much as we can,” he said, adding that because Barbados was hosting the final, the country had the opportunity to learn from those who hosted earlier games.

While speaking about tourism growth generally, he disclosed that next week Barbados would be signing another agreement with cruise company that would guarantee thousands of cruise passengers.

Additionally, he added, in June a new non-stop service between Barbados and Fort Lauderdale would be launched.

    Note To Adrian Loveridge.

Its not often that I think you are right but I admit this time I got it wrong you got it right.

  2. "Shock" !!

    The Minister LIED??
Surely that is beyond elected officialdom!

Do I sense a real change of government, in the air?
better call that election quick, Oweing, while you guys still have some semblance of order left,
coz it shackling out daily, yuh!

    Lies, Lies and damn Lies

Now watch this post get deleted for some unknown thing.
The Minister has a lot to answer for. He has led the people and the country down the garden path, however there is no way out this time around. He has lied through his teeth and is still lying. He has no sense of honour to the country only to his pocket.
People have been warning on this post for a long time that the CWC would be a disaster, and on one in the Government would listen. All they did was to make lage statements about how many people would be coming
I have something for the Mimister, sice two years ago the press in Austrailia were warning that the Indian cricket was one of the poorest they had seen in many years and their chances were slim to none of winning the World Cup. So now how come he didn’t know this, when it was all over the foreign newspapers. I for one knew as I read papers on line from around the world, one would think that someone in his Ministry would have seen fit to advise him
OH I forgot he is god and no one can tell him anything as he knows it all.
The hardships are yet to start and when they come your dollar is not going to be worth anything. So look out for chicken to cost 20-30 dollars a pound.
I get so upset when I see the way that the BLP has handled the whole CWC, they thought it would be their salvation but I am afraid it will be their downfall. But in the end it is the people who will suffer, not the BLP members as they are fat with cash already.
BLP you were warned from long ago, but you did not heed the warnings so you shall feel the peoples wrath

  4. Adrian Loveridge

    No problem ??

I can assure that it dosn’t give me any pleasure to highlight our policymakers poor decisions and judgement.
This is going to cost the entire industry and lot of money.

    BFP..

I have just posted some comments regarding this
    on another another ‘Recent Post’.
Is it possible to transfer them to this one?

    Many Thanks

  6. Jerome Hinds

Well because of their DAMN lies….the BLP politicians…SUFFERING from the SWEATING DISEASE….!!!

Anyone saw Noel Lynch on TV last night….??

And Owen a few nights ago in Parliament…??

    To the BLP…

You are being uncharitable with the truth about CWC 2007 !

Barbadians and Caribbean CITIZENS on the whole supported the hosting of CWC 2007.

However, serious concern was expressed by the high level of spending by countries in a geographical region whose economies are subjected to external shock.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and Keith Mitchell expressed early in the planning stages that Caribbean governments should proceed with CAUTION about their spending.

Hoteliers in Jamaica expressed similar concerns re: this anticipated influx of tourists to the region around the CWC 2007.

But here in Barbados….the most HIGH – PRICED destination of the countries hosting the CWC 2007 this BLP Government through the Prime Minister and Minister Tourism kept PROCLAIMING that :

    1. The last week of CWC 2007 90,000 visitors will be in Barbados…despite during our BEST week we only get about 12,000 tourists….!!

    2. Kensington Oval MUST be renovated…… when popular and prudent views were that a newer stadium would have being CHEAPER…since no need to compensate businesses and home owners around Kensington…!!

    3. That the room capacity on the island need to INCREASE…thus Poor people FOOLED into borrowing money to improve their housing stock….while the BLP Government enters into a US $ 15 Million deal with Carnival Destiny….!!

These were the PRONOUNCEMENTS and ACTIONS of a BLP government interested ONLY in their political FORTUNES…!

    4 LOVE at any cost…..!

So to blame what we now see as the reality on the ground on other factors….such as India and Pakistan being knocked out is bare…..RUBBISH….!!

The BLP government needs to review the points I have expressed above and the many others expressed by other Barbadians…..and ask themselves as a GOVERNMENT…how much did BLP….. STUBBORNESS and DECEPTION….NOW threaten the livelihood of those in the hotel industry and the average Barbadians on a whole….!!

  7. Jerome Hinds

The warning signs and concerns were CLEARLY expressed but due to CRASS political opportunism Owen Arthur and his mendicants IGNORED all and sundry to push their political agenda…!!

So the strategy was to give the notion that Barbados will be AWASH with visitors to the extent that tourist ships would be needed to accomodate the EXCESS…!!

4 weeks to go , How are things PANNING out…in Barbados….?

    1. Hotel staff already being laid – off…!!

    2. US $ 15 Million SAILING in Carnival Destiny…bank account…ONLY 40% BOOKINGS…!!

    3. Cricket grounds around the Caribbean half – empty…including 3W’s warm – up games….!!

    4. In light of this…BTA says they TARGETTING the IRISH….watch out Sein FENN…!!

    5. Noel Lynch says RELAX….90,000 visitors STILL coming….!

    6. Noel Lynch CONVINCES everyone…including William Duguid…who joins BFP site to PREACH the SAME…!

    7. Noel Lynch says ONLY 10 Cruise ships coming…with about 2,800 VISITORS each…..and from his CALCULATIONS….this is ABOUT 75,000 Cruise ship PASSENGERS…..yes, New Maths…!!

This is the CWC 2007….LEGACY….of the GREAT ECONOMIST…Owen Arthur…!!

If this is the LEGACY of the GREAT ECONOMIST……then Dr. Estwick…..has ALL reason to be PROUD….he is not an ECONOMIST….!

    Madness & Madness = TIEFFERY…!!

  8. No - Name

The BLP knew things were looking brown weeks ago….in fact more than a month ago.
Don’t you remember Clyde going to the house to amend a law that would allow home owners who borrowed money for World cup to carry forward the losses over a number of years ( can’t remember how many years)?

  9. Jerome Hinds

Comments immediately below are those of Mr. Adrian Loveridge ,

” The signs have been there for all to see (even the policymakers) for weeks. The Barmy Army’s comments! The CariCom visa fiasco!
Comments from just about every Hotel and
    Tourism Association the region!

Even other territories Minister’s of Tourism.

Yet ‘our’ Minister of Tourism was still stating up to the 25th March on Down to Brass Tacks Sunday programme that there would still be ‘90,000′ visitors on the island during the week of the CWC final and ‘75,000 cruise ship passengers’. ”
    ___________________________________
    Jerome Hinds ,

By 25th March, 2007 India and Pakistan were ALREADY out of the COMPETITION….!

Incidentally, on 25th March, 2007…..Bangladesh was battling BERMUDA….with every INDIAN knowing that it was well nigh IMPOSSIBLE for Bermuda to beat Bangladesh and INDIA to have a CHANCE to advance…!

    NOEL LYNCH BY 25th March, 2007…..KNEW this…..ALSO…..!

So for the BLP and LYNCH to blame what we now see as the reality on the ground on other factors….such as India and Pakistan being knocked out is bare…..RUBBISH….and LIES….!!

NOEL LYNCH IS A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR…and by EXTENSION HE WOULD……TIEF….!!!

  10. Bajanboy

I think it is time that Noel Lynch resigns. BFP should lead the campaign for his resignation.

  11. What kills me about the excuse was the comment about over priced tickets and the removal of drinks and music. surely someone in his position would have known about this a long time ago. The CWC deliberatey priced the tickets above what the average caribbean person could afford. Then they sanitized the whole show by removing our culture from it. Then expected us to pick up the lack when the foreigners didnt come.

Oh and in case they forgot it was the caribbean governments who almost at the last minute instituted visa requirements for certain countries’ fans who wanted to visit even though they knew they were lacking in the facilities to adequately process these visas.

as someone said if i was an opposition party i’d be licking my lips now waiting for elections. Of course knowing the stupid DLP they will find a way to nullify any ground they could make up on this.

politics aside though the people of the caribbean are the big losers here. its really sad.

  12. Jerome Hinds

    DLP,

Have your shadow Minister of Tourism call for a public clarification from Minister of Tourism on the following:

    1. If he says only 10 cruise ships coming with about 2,800 passengers EACH….how he arrived at 75,000 crusie ship passengers coming to Barbados for the last week of CWC 2007…?

    2. Did the Government of Barbados borrow US $ 15 Million to secure the services of Carnival Destiny..?

    3. By 25th March 2007…was not the INDIA team already out of the CWC 2007…when he stated 90,000 tourist coming to Barbados AND 75,000 CRUIS SHIP passengers also…?

    4. Why hotel staff already being laid – off…in Barbados….during the peak of the TOURIST season and CWC 2007…?

    Get cracking DLP….1

I do believe that if OSA removes him, it makes the BLP look a whole lot better than if he keeps him there.

If the BLP is concerned (LOL) with the what the electorate thinks then do with tourism what they did with social transformation…remove lynch and replace with rudy grant…

But maybe it is wishful thinking on my part…

  17. No - Name

The CWC problem is multifacited. If you dismiss Minister Lynch ( I said that long time ago)..then you also have to dismiss Mia for her role in the Visa requirements that have proven to be a real hassle for persons coming to Caribbean. Owen himself should resign for being the Architect of the whole fiasco.

  18. Adrian Loveridge

    Adrian and Jerome…

    Ask me nicely!

Its a very important position and I really don’t think a white Englishman like me should have it.
But I think I could help achieve a lot in a supporting role.

Why Peter Morgan and Sir Harold St. John were good at the job is because they listened to every level of person that worked in the industry.

  19. chupsing a lot

If we cannot rally as a nation and people of integrity and with our voices, pens and comments to call this government to account for its injustices to this nation then we have lost our way and the legacy given us by our foreparents.
I have never seen such fumbling by ministers in my life and now here is mr lynch giving pathetic and ludicrous reasons for the fallout.

How could you only target the big countries originally and you had 16 countries coming and now scrambling to get Irish, SriLankans and Bangledeshan fans to come.
    TOO LATEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All of a sudden blame it on the poor West Indies team, we were already struggling before world cup start! duuh!
The tickets were priced so loonnngg ago and all the other restrictions, tell me they didn’t see it comin? we will not let you get away from your own ministerial disaster.

Last minute visa fiasco that proved to be a major downfall ,poor planning and now this will be another excuse. O Dear,Dear me, duh in trouble.

What about those persons that built on rooms? The fat cats will have to lend them some of the Carnival Cruises incentives to help pay off their loans!!!!!
I hope heaven and earth do not now begin to move upon Oweing, after all the the bell is tolling, it tolls for thee!!!!!!!!!!

We as Bajans are not stupid or muzzled we leave that for the general media but we will not let our country be ruined by disasters waiting to happen.

Where is the opposition in all of this are they sleeping with the enemy or have they been captured and taken hostage?

Look for the indiscrepancies to begin to come out also known as tiefing. Watch for the duck and hide attitude but this one they will not live down.

I need to know, why, in First World Barbados,
Mr.Loveridge thinks that a white Englishman couldn’t fit the post?

Is Barbados such a Black Nationalist nation that they would exclude a person of Mr.Loveridge’s obvious capability,
due to nothing more than the colour of his skin?
Where the hell are our priorities?
Do we want FUNCTION and ORDER?
or do we want a black man in dey, coz he’s a brudder?

    Don’t answer.
We know exactly where the priorities lie.

    Most peculiar.
Barbados is indeed a mutually-agreed Apartheid

  24. I think some of the best person that the various ministries can immensely benefit from, would not make good consituentcy representatives indeed i don’t think any of them are interested in taking on such a role. This is why we have got to look at revamping our current system to do away with giving ministries to consituency representatives. I agree with Adrian L, that one does not have to in government to be of service to the country, but government has to willing to reach out and take advice where ever good advice is to be found.

  25. Nobody can seriously expect many Irish to rush down here at a week’s notice to support their team, much as they might like to.

People arrange their holidays months in advance, getting leave agreed to by their employers etc. It is unrealistic to expect more than a virtual handful to be in a position to take up even a tempting offer.

Very panicky concept resulting from pathetic planning, or lack thereof. More money down the drain if attempted.

  26. Yardbroom

This is a seminal moment in Barbados politics and the teutonic plates have started to shift. Power is not easily relinquished, so expect spin, and double dealing. For those who seek to lead stay focused on main themes, do not allow diversion into tributaries of tittle- tattle, these lead into dry sand.

If mistakes have been made in the past admit them, to err is to be human, you have learned from your mistakes.

You have gone back to the grass roots -that is where power lies – from where you have sprung. You are of the people for the people, and that really means the ordinary Barbadian folk. From Carringtons Road, to Six Roads, to Bathsheba and even Speightstown listen to the people, know what they want, but promise only what you can deliver and the economy can bear.

Ensure that corrupt practices are not the raison d’etre for the party’s existence.

The prize is there for the taking….

I find the comments about trying to get the Irish to come such a laugh.

People here don’t know anything about cricket and the few who do, just wouldn’t catch 2 planes just to watch it. They might have to try something else but I don’t see the Irish jumping at this.

“Is Barbados such a Black Nationalist nation that they would exclude a person of Mr. Loveridge’s obvious capability due to nothing more than the colour of his skin?”

The answer, my dear, is emphatically YES. Just listen to the radio call-in programmes! Just read and listen to the insults David Thompson has to suffer because he has a pale skin colour. That doesn’t happen in St. Vincent to Ralph Gonzalves nor did it happen to Kenny Anthony in St. Lucia. Also, there is a travel book in which the writer states that Barbados is one of the most racist (black against white) islands in the Caribbean. I was marvelling the other day at the fact that the Deputy Comm. of Police in Jamaica is white. IT COULDN’T HAPPEN HERE, believe me!

Thank you, Justice, for your clarification.

It’s going to be very odd, then,

    Naive
All we have to tell the Irish is that “We’ve got rum!”
Seriously, though, let the inquest wait until the CWC is over. Right now, everybody in Barbados should be thinking about how to make this the best time for all those visitors that do come. This is not a time for wallowing in self-pity. We need those visitors that do come to have their best-ever vacation experience, so that they go away, not thinking about a poor CWC, but how great Barbados is. This is not the time for recriminations and politics – it is a time for national pride. We’ll show ’em!

  41. Michele

    Guys,

Do I have to keep on saying that Irish people know nothing of cricket, trust me when I say this.

No one would be up for the Dublin to Shannon trip, or from the north to Shannon. Those players family and friends might be the only ones up for it.

No one here understand the game, they play cricket in England right nextdoor. You would find as long as the English have an interest in something it puts the Irish right off it.

Over here they are proud of the guys when they win a game, some even find it funny, they don’t make alot of noise in the news and no one talks about it. I wish them luck on getting the Irish, if the tickets or cheap I might get one myself but I wouldn’t go to cricket, unless you get tickets with a package for the oval.

  42. Warrior

With all that has played out concerning the CWC 2007.

A few questions crossed my mind.

    1. Was this a deliberate attempt to bring shame, disgrace and a bad name to the Caribbean Region. Note that if this event had come off successfully, perhaps the Caribbean in a few years could bid to host the Olympic Games. Just a thought.

    2. I am reminded of the British Comedy Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, there was always a “power” so to speak behind that throne. It was mentioned on one of these topics that there was a certain person who was really calling the shots in the Tourism Ministry. Perhaps Barney should not be lynched all by himself.

    3. What were the Goverments of the Caribbean thinking when they accepted these deals. Did they just think – pay dirt for me and mine- or did they think how it would benefit each country and the Caribbean on a whole.
How can you host a party at a man’s house and then tell him he’s not really invited to the party, but that he should still make himself available just in case anything break or they want to take a few pics to make things look good. They took “Caribbean” out of Cricket.

4.Mr. Lynch said that we all celebrated when it was revealed that Barbados was awarded the finals. May I reminded him that it was a handful of handpicked people at the announcement. Can’t he now call upon them to make up the short fall i.e purchase huge amount of tickets and cruise trips.

    5. What is the Minister’s penchant for cruise ships? he has touted these things as saving graces for the past five or so years. Nothing happening there!!!.

    6. I realise with the Minister Narcissism seems to be a personality trait. Who is going to part of this task force? Will they listen to the common people to get good workable ideas to take the egg off our faces? Is this just another avenue for money to grow legs and walk?

  43. Bajan George

    Yardbroom,

“Teutonic Plates?” I almost choked. Good one!

  44. La De Da

Crying over spilt milk is only going to make it sour for the cat. The die was cast eons ago and the super eight matches and the final are still going to be held in Barbados.Quit the political bashing and let,s see how we can maxamise these events for the good of ” this island”. Remember the CWC is very much a “Television event”– it is very important therefore that this “task force” place much effort in ensuring that Barbados gets maximum coverage (and I mean good positive one).–We could not purchase this for any amount of money. Every town, city or country that has ever hosted any exposition, trade fair, games (of any kind from the Olympics back down) has been chastised by a lot of it’s Citizens and the cry of mortgaging the future always rings out. I would be happy for my children and grandchildren to have to pick up some of the “tab”, because I think that the benefits will accrue to them if as I say from here on in the public relations is handled well.

  45. Get In The Action

So hold on, I thought this event was so important to us that we had a “Task Force” in effect three years ago where all agencies were meeting regularly to ensure this thing came off right.

Maybe I got it wrong and that one was actually a Task Farce and this is the real thing now.

  46. Anonymous

What is Lynch really saying? Lynch is a bold faced liar. ICC maintains LOC , read governments, set prices that are killing fans, locals and tourists. When Iraq war 1991 triggered Barbados economic meltdown Sandi was blamed. He paid with his political career. Any World Cup fiasco here the Owen Arthur Administration must shoulder responsibility. Its them including Lynch who move heaven and earth and lick up our half billion dollars. Sweaty Lynch trying to pass the buck. That task force should be careful its scapegoat hunting season.

  47. Rumplestilskin

For best advertising, just have to ensure the cameramen go through the crowd (as they have been doing in other islands) and capture our young beauties cheering the teams on. Dats good advertising of our island beauty.

    2. Ain’t tek up Bajans tax dollars and FLOAT way pon a cruise ship…and then turn around and tell bajans no money was BORROWED for the ship….!

    3. Never admitted ONLY 10 cruise ships coming

    Who was the BRAT…..then…?

    THE PATHOLOGICAL LIAR…and by EXTENSION………TIEF….!!!

    Blaring Barney Lynch….!

  52. Minister Lynch is revving up the spin machine and is now telling the public that the CWC challenges are not a result of any policy or system failures by the BLP. What rubbish. CWC blood is on their hands and they are already trying to wash it off!

  53. Maat

This whole notion of cricket being a world sport that is highly popular is mainly to blame for the present problem. Most countries in the world do NOT enjoy a large cricket playing or fan base. The Caribbean in particular has been struggling to make any financial profit from regional cricket as there is just not the financial commitment to support teams of professional cricketers. It was very disappointing hearing guys like Aja proclaiming that the whole world will know about Barbados due to CWC. Most European countries, Chinese, Russians, Middle Eastern, African, or USA do not play, or care about cricket, so why would they watch and thereby know about Barbados.
    Don’t believe the Hype

    Peace

  54. Wishing in Vain

I understand that Indian Pepsi a major sponsor of this event have cancelled the trip to Barbados this involves around 200 people and with many other cancellations taking place from Indian visitors this world cup is turning out to be a fiasco of major proportions.

  55. Simply put ….. Minister Lynch should resign forthwith.

PM Arthur should come to the public and apologize, then call an election and retire from public life.

When Arthur goes, what will he be best remembered for ….. a failed World Cup, massive public debt and a very divided society, and oh…… starting aprenting late in life with a 22 year old daughter!

    How pathetic.

  56. Hey I heard that Lynch was offered $40,000 from Starcom Network for the perceived faux pa of their station 2 Sundays ago.

    How pathetic if true!

  57. I have spent quite a bit of time on Dublin, Ireland, and the Irish are not overly excited about cricket. I cannot see many of them having the interest, time or money to come down here for World Cup.

Perhaps Desmond Dermont, the Irish guy who owns Sandy Lane and has been listed in this week’s edition of Forbes magazine as being one of the wealthiest men in the world, with $1.8 billion dollars, can afford to come over. But then again he owns half of the West Coast.

  58. Bangladeshi and Pakistani in Florida do have the purchasing power to fly down to the most expensive island to attend cricket. Forget the idea Stuart Layne.

If Mr. Layne would install a radio in the BTA’s BMW he would be bale to listen to the radio and know what is happening. I ahve nothing agaianst the Close Bretheren at all …. but one should face reality!

Stuart Layne is a dismal failure as CEO of the BTA. HE has not a clue. A dangerous combination with him and Lynch. A tsunami on our tourism product.

  59. How prepared are we for World Cup….. the Director of Engineering at the QEH, Mr. Ezra Prescod, has resigned from his post effective May 04 and is now on holiday. He is accompanied on the retirement train by the Head of Accounts, Director Nursing and Head of HR who may have pinned her resignation on the CEO’s door with a thumb tap, sinc no 6 penny nails were available.

So with so many visitors expected according to Lynch, our lone tertiary care hospital is headless and being run by a former bed-pan supervisor.

Jerome Walcott should be fired. He is a dismal Minister of Health. He said we would be ready for any catatrophe during World Cup.

We have a dangerous sister-hood in this Cabinet.

  60. All roads lead to Owen S Arthur.

How sickening …. why he, his wife and one of his daughters can jet off to London, first class to look at flowers and talk about the abolition of slavery, we have here:

    1. An expensive and failed World Cup leaving massive debts owing to the white ruled countries!

    2. Barbados prime land being purchased by white expats resulting in high land prices on the barren land to the local blacks.

    3. A high cost of living blamed on the merchants, but Arthur making Allan Fields (former head of teh Private Sector and BS & T), a Senator, Chairman of CBC and a key advisor to the PM

    Bajans wake up.

    Time for a change.

  61. piper peter

I see CEO at BTA Stuart Layne is Closed Brethren and has not installed news radio in his government BMW. I believe thats part of their code to avoid worldliness. I wonder if Layne goes to same Brethern assembly as Earlyn Shuffler another former CEO of BTA whose monumental failure as a chief executive makes Layne a brown skin Bill Gates. Its inconceivable that any BTA CEO could be a bigger incompetent than Shuffler.

  62. Rumplestilskin

As much as people could talk about Sandi, at least he would never ever have borrowed for about four projects (most of questionable need) at one time, to the hilt.

Quite the opposite, after all if not for him, our dollar would not a 20 to US$.

But the spin doctors did a good job on labelling him a failure, he was certainly not.

Remember, now we may see money flowing. BUT, we have to pay back.

  63. Rumplestilskin

Oops s/be ”Quite the opposite, after all if not for him, our dollar would now be Bds$20 to US$1.”

As it is now looking, it may very well get there.

And yet we still have major issues, such as school renovations, new hospital, desal plants etc to address.

But, significant funds have been borrowed and money spent so those essentials will now have to wait.

You know, it was expressed on this site a few months back that we hoped the Government did not ‘rush through’ contracts before the election, just in case they lost.

Now, see how fast the flyover project get rushed though?

Because it is needed, or because contracts needed to be awarded?

    Hmmph.

  64. paul sealy

    $US1 dollar =$BDS100…OH YEAH

  65. littleboy

How many of the LOC hierarchy have set up agencies to benefit from CWC??? How many with BLP connectons have done similarly???
The DLP will have to set up an enquiry immediately upon winning the government. Somebody wll have to pay!!!
It is tax payers money that has been badly spent (squandered).
    Lock them up!!!
Barney is trying to exculpate the government, but his primus inter pares Owen $ Arthur promised to “move heaven and earth” to ensure Kensington was finished.
Well our economy is “finished” with all the excessive borrowing and mal-spending.
No amount of suave talking or public relations will shift the Bajan voter!!!
    “Mene mene tekel upharsin”
“You are weighed in the balance and found wanting”.

  66. vortex

    Come on, Adrian whoever.

You mean brainless Lynch is all we have? That doesn’t say much for the BLP team at all. Isn’t Rudy Grant – morally challenged though he is for stealing his uncle’s money and domestic violence – a possibility? He is the Parliamentary Secretary after all.

John Compton sent for Allen Chastanet from the St. Lucian private sector to be Minister. There must be someone in Barbados who can do the job.

Just saw an ad promoting a cruise. Minister Lynch could very well meet his target if 75,000 bajans respond and take up the offer. Knowing him he will count bajans on the cruise as visitors!

Perhaps we will see even cheaper rates towards the finals in order to achieve this 75,000.

Minister Lynch seems to be on course to put the “payne” back into Tourism!

Did you see him sweating on TV as he explained the unforeseen circumstances? REMINDED ME OF OWEN WHEN THOMPSON SPRANG THE $750,000 CHEQUE ON HIM.HE HAS NO SHAME.

No one should have to ask him to resign especially for lying about the $15 mil loan. He simply should not be allowed to get away with the lying.

We have major issues to address and these are the lack of numbers caused by price gouging by hotels can you see Grand Barbados asking and getting US 600.00 per night for their rooms come on give me a break this place is a dump but are asking for Sandy lane or near Sandy Lane rates.

**** While taking up taxpayers money to pay back a loan of US $ 15 Million for a 40 % booked cruise ship..!

    3. Moved HEAVEN & EARTH in 2 YEARS to get Kensington Oval ready…..!

***** While next door, the PEOPLE at EMMERTON have been fed BLP broken PROMISES for 13 YEARS….about their REMOVAL..!

  75. Brabsoda

True Native, I agree with your views on racism in Barbados. It is a view that not many black Bajans will admit exist.
But to the point at hand, I would like to respond to the paltry excuses the Misister put foreward:
    1. The early exit of Pakistan and India. Who in their right mind would put all their eggs in one basket. You always plan for all possibilities.
    2. Change of dates. The ICC would have made their decision based sound data and agreed to by all participating countries. You would have known of this decision long in advance.
    3. Ashes series in December. Once again you would have known of this well in advance and you could have plan to suit. Obviously you lack imagination.
    4. Poor West Indies performance. This would have been the easiest one to predict. I say no more.
    5. Over-priced tickets. The ICC says that it was the LOC’s who set the prices beyond the reach of the average West Indian. Greed!
    6. Removal of things Caribbean. Once again it was you (the LOC’s) who instituted these regulations which have resulted in a boring atmosphere at the events.
The only respectful thing the Minister of Tourism can do is to immediately tender his resignation.

My first time submitting an entry to this blog……its a little scary….. but the conversation is so interesting I just had to jump in.
Here’s a suggestion for filling the seats at Kensington: Have a 2-for-1 sale: Everyone who has bought a ticket at the original prices can bring along a guest for Free!! New purchasers can purchase at half of the original prices.
Now about the “special task force” – I wonder if it includes that “Magnificent Seven” that were rumoured to have gotten all the business opps that sprang up since the relaunch of Kensington was being planned. They are supposed to be the biggest & bestest brains in the island when it comes to conceiving, promoting, staging, etc. big events — and just by coincidence, close friends of a particular Minister. Where are they now? By the way, has anyone seen/heard the former CBC CEO lately? Is she still ‘working’ with Kensington?

I can assure you, had the Democratic Labour Party been the Government during the World Cup period, it would have been a complete mess and mortification for the citizens of this country.

I shall retort, the Barbados Labour Party is the people’s party and remains our best option for a representative Government.

  84. Wishing in Vain

And what is the idiot of the minister saying now????? This was taken from the cricket site minutes ago we really have done ourselves proud in the way we have for up the cup.

Phil Bingham emails us with a sorry story, and one Chris Dehring and Malcolm Speed would do well to read. “At the risk of sounding like Mr Killjoy, I have been so depressed by everything that I have read/heard/seen of the World Cup beyond the boundary, that I have decided not to bother coming. I had planned two weeks in Barbados to be at all the Super Eight matches taking place there, but the ICC has pushed me to the point that I no longer wish to fund their insanely self-serving, money grabbing merry-go-round with my hard earned cash. I have been to Antigua’s ARG for the entirety of the last two England Test matches, and they have been two of the best weeks of my 32 years.

“Looking at the sanitised, empty new stadium, dripping with officious security gorillas and rampant uncontrolled commercialism, it is clear to me that this competition marks the point that West Indies cricket has been irreparably ruined. How gutting for an awesome region with cricket supposedly coursing through its veins, and for the spectators who thought they were going to experience some of that.”

  85. Georgie Girl

Javon Griffith: “…I shall retort, the Barbados Labour Party is the people’s party and remains our best option for a representative Government.
If you like the idea of 8% pay cuts while getting a duty free car, go ahead and be supportive of that notion, but don’t try to garner support.”

Are you crazy? Nobody liked the 8% pay cuts, but the 20/20 hindsight of history has helped us all to feel proud about the contribution we were able to make to help stabilise the economy, and of course, the $$ we got back years later (while not all) further helped us to let go of any lingering ill well about the whole experience. So, we all know about sacrifice for a good cause, but I am convinced that the level of sacrifice that is looming ahead for all Bajans will, years and even decades from now, be seen as something very different: (CWC sacrifice by the masses + CWC pocket-lining profits for the elite). And by the way, has anyone noticed that most of the Bajan LOC folk were out of work before the CWC Cash Cow walked up to the watering trough? I am sure that they are some of the lucky few sitting pretty in win-win positions, whether Kensington & Bajan hotels end up 80% full, 50% full, or even 20% full — they’ve got their fat salaries already!

I saw a post where someone said that the leader of the opposition should call a press conference.

My advise for what it is worth, is to do no such thing. If the leader of the opposition called a press conference the focus would be changed and whatever was said, would be picked apart and used to make a case of him not being fit for government.

The Government is in a hole and they are so firmly entrenched, that their only recourse is to continue digging. Your function is to hold a steady course and set your own agenda. Now is the time to plan for the election in terms of basic structures, ensure systems are in place to get the vote out. No stone must be left unturned, every vote must be picked up, transport delegations in place, do not forget the basics, allocate areas of responsibility, do not allow drift, know who is in charge and what their delegated responsibilities are and to whom they should report.

Be cohesive, not only in intent but in exposition, the party must speak with the same voice. Some derogatory remarks have been made in reference to your candidates as hilly billies etc this is to your advantage. Yes our candidates are of the people, is that what they think of ordinary Barbadian folk, we have not become puffed up with our importance. That they are new faces is a good thing, some proper cleansing is required to remove this corrupt system, the blend of new and experience, is the way of the future.
