Queen Elizabeth Hospital Board Split Over Large Scale Internal Thefts

BFP’s Cards Are On The Table, Face Up

Let’s get one thing straight folks – most of us BFP editors don’t like Mr. George Griffith on principle alone. How on earth the Barbados Labour Party could select the Director of the largest abortion provider in the country to be their candidate in the upcoming election is totally beyond our understanding.

We also believe that Mr. Griffiths should not be on the Board of Directors for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital because it is an obvious conflict of interest between his abortion business and an institution that is supposed to be in the oversight chain over his abortion business. We also don’t like the relationship between the abortion industry, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the stem-cell clinics in Barbados.

Forget about all that for now – because as strange as it seems, this is an editoral in support of Mr. Griffith and his call for hospital employees to be accountable for the large-scale thefts at the hospital.

We see that the Board of Directors for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have crawled on their knees to beg forgiveness of the employees union for the fact that Mr. Griffiths spoke the obvious: some staff members are involved in the pilfering taking place at the hospital.

This is yet another case of someone trying to break that Barbados taboo that has somehow wormed it’s way into public thought: the taboo that no one can ever be held personally accountable for their areas of responsibility. Oh, we can talk about systemic problems and budget concerns and “some people this” and “a minority of employees this” but we can never say, for instance…

“The hospital administrator (insert name) is responsible for the surgical supplies in the operations theatre. $200,000 in supplies is unaccounted for, so we are firing the administrator who was supposed to be responsible for the surgical supplies.”

Mr. Griffith was taking the first step in solving a problem which is to name the problem – which is large scale pilfering from the hospital under circumstances where any reasonable person could know that hospital employees have to be involved in a serious way.

And the rest of the cowards on the Hospital Board can’t have any of that! Not to mention that if the Board starts to hold individuals accountable, someone might want to apply the same standard to them!

So in this, Barbados Free Press supports Mr. Griffith and his call for accountability about the large scale pilfering at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Here is an article from CBC News…

QEH Board apologises

We’re sorry, says the board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital which has apologised for comments made by Deputy Chairman George Griffith, suggesting that some staff members were pilfering at the institution.

The apology followed a meeting today involving board chairman Horace Cobham, hospital CEO Winston Collymore and the National Union of Public Workers.

About a month ago, Mr. Griffith was quoted as saying there is large scale pilfering at the hospital.

However, the board says that at no time has it sought to cast aspersions of this nature on employees and therefore extends its deepest apologies.

The board also says it’s well aware that the majority of staff works tirelessly to provide care to patients and it remains committed to providing them with the necessary tools and a supportive environment to help them be their best.

It adds however, that there are many issues which must be addressed as it continues to pursue its performance improvement programme.

Nevertheless the deputy chairman is standing firm by his position.

While saying he would not comment on statements from the Chairman, Mr. Griffith told CBC his remarks about pilfering were not made lightly and that he was speaking about a minority at the hospital.

The Deputy Chairman also says he has no intention of resigning over the issue.

You all are giving George Griffith more exposure than ever does this help or ruin his chances as an election hopeful?
If I were him I would be asking myself what is the matter at the QEH more wrongs than rights there that is for sure.

  2. web

if griffith accusing qeh workers as theives gets him elected god help us all

  3. Wishing in Vain

remember we are living in BGI all things are possible you know

  4. BK

why are we all dribbling this emotional diatribe? the man stated that QEH workers does tief de supplies. we all know dat he doan mean everybodie and we all kno that he true. dis hypocrisy is killing me doah.

  5. justice

BFP, I disagree with you entirely. I am not in a position to deny that there is “pilferage” at the QEH, but if there is, surely the proper thing to do in the circumstances is to have the relevant authorities investigate what is essentially a criminal offence. To make the naked claim that there is pilferage implicates all QEH employees and is hardly in accordance with good industrial relations practice. What makes it even more preposterous is the ridiculous attempt by Griffith to deny that pilferage means the same as stealing, and his queer reversal of the burden of proof by saying that he has to be proved wrong. What has become of the presumption of innocence? If a woman accused me of rape, should I have to prove she’s lying? Worse yet, if she accuses by implication ALL the contributors to this blog. Mr Griffith should apologise and have the Board call in the police.

    It is a simple case..!!!

    He who alleges must PROVE…!!!

If he has one SHRED of evidence give it to the police and let the investigation(s) begin…!!!

Failing to prove his allegations…Mr. Griffith should do the honourable thing and RESIGN…!!!

Nobody should be allowed to tarnish the reputations of people the way he did and now seek to TWIST the charge and hope to get away with it….!!!

    No Way..!!!

  7. Naiobe

well I hope the Board of the QEH can offer an explanation for the shortage of supplies on the wards. If the staff is not stealing it then something most be happenning because the wards are sufferring for supplies as a direct result of a shortage, in spite of the fact that adequate supplioes are purchased. My view is that an audit should be carried out. If a shortage is established, as it will then the Board of the Hospital should be asked to account for the shortage if they can not account then they should all, except Griffith be asked to resign.

this is why things in BIM will not improve because we are so politically correct as a people. It reminds of the argument smokers i.e.it cannot be proved conclusively that smoking causes cancer because one would have to do a control experiment from baby to manhood. It should not matter that a solid conclusion can be made looking at available data with good correlation analysis.

let us continue to bury our heads in the sand!

  10. justice

So, BK, it would be OK for me to accuse you of murder because you had just wrestled the knife from the real killer who fled; and I saw you standing over the corpse… available data…good correlation analysis…

    hahaha good one!

    Man I mek my point.

  12. titilayo

BK, I think you really did.

  13. reality check

from what I can gather from the comments

    1) enough supplies are being ordered for the needs of the hospital

    2) there are severe shortages for patients needs

    3) if number 1 and 2 are correct and I say that guardely, then someone is taking the inventory for other than hospital needs.

answer—implement strict inventory control and audit procedures—fire anyone immediately for not strictly following the rules and/or anyone found stealing at whatever level. Hopefully not everyone is part of the disappearance.

question—How do you clean up systemic
stealing when the people governing at the top are guilty of the same thing but at a much higher level?

answer—you don’t and can’t until you change the people at the top and this means electing people who have completely signed on to accountability and transparency legislation.

  14. insider

All I can say is that nobody who can cause integrity legislation to be implemented seems to be doing so. This leaves us all to assume that nobody who can will implement it. You know what happens when we ass-u-me and that is exactly what the politicians are doing to us the Barbadian public and laughing all the way to the bank.

  15. Wishing in Vain

Here we have a more comprehensive list of the whos who of Barbadian corruption please feel free to add to the list -: Nicholls, Bannister,
Shorey, Arthur, Cox, Hobson, Wilkinson and the gang keeps growing you realise if we had .50 cents for each dollar that this gang stole from the taxpayers we could have a brand spanking new hospital the best roads in the caribbean, a wonderful transport service and a more honest gov’t?

  16. Pilferage in any large institution can be distinguished from “stealing” by its petty, persistent and widespread practice.

Workers get in the habit of taking home a little of this, a little of that. No big t’ing. It is an attitude of mind, a climate of behaviour that becomes accepted, engrained, and a perk not brought to the attention of shop stewards. Just like domestics take home a little of goodness knows what from Madam in those overstuffed shopping bags they bring to work.

Changing the people at the top is not going to change the established practices at the bottom. Don’t ask me what can change a long-established practice of this nature. It’s not easy. They may have had a chance when the staff switched to the new contract of employment, but they missed the chance.

To impose strict controls over pilferage of things like toilet-paper, soap, linens etc. will be resented and opposed wholesale by those for whom it is their “work ethic” to use a contradictory term- Pilferage is hardly “ethical.” Perhaps only the imported foreign nurses will cooperate in imposing new stricter standards, Alas.

  17. Abort!!

    Thank God he provides abortions!!
Can you imagine what the island’s population would BE, without his services?
I’m NO BLP fan, but build a bridge and get OVER the drummed-up Abortion “issue”

  21. Wry Mongoose

Perhaps my post above should read “unsubstantiated accusations” – but the point remains.

  22. De Orginal

I do believe that in order for BFP to support Mr George Griffith on this one he must produce the evidence to go with this allegation. He after all is a member of the QEH Board.

Hobson isn’t the fellow who was offering to put in a ferry?

  24. Bajanboy

Pilferage of toilet paper?!? Is that why patients have to bring their own?

Write policies, install cameras, check bags, fire those caught. Problem solved.

Check George Griffith’s record as Chairman of the Child Care Board! Does anyone know Joey Harper’s before he was appointed?

    God help our children!

I hope someone from the QEH Board and the Health Ministry sees this:

There are alot of problems at the QEH. These problems result in the accusations Mr. Griffith refers to.

Lack of security at every level.
Free for all access to areas that house inventories and equipment.
    Poor requsitions of inventory
Poor communications between staff of the QEH.
Internal fighting against the Board and Foreign staff.
    External influences
    Poor management in some areas.
People making decisions independently from Management.

These things i know of as I visit the hospital every week to conduct business and I can walk around freely to most areas with out being questioned or ask for ID etc…….

Its about how you look and dress, what vehicle u drive, whom you are seen talking to, how you speak and make requests.

So of course the level theft has increase.

    Patients are at RISK.

THE QEH is sick and getting all the wrong Diagnoses.

Tiefin is entrenched in Organizational culture in BDOS
it happens at QEH, School Meals, Hardware stores Hotels Supermarkets everywhere
no one was accused individually but if 30 bars of soap go to a ward to last a week and after 2 days all gone i pretty sure that in de absence of a logical explanation somebody tiefin them.
i might not be able to prove who tief it but i know tiefin going on
the problem in BDOS is that we bury our heads in the sand and allow the guilty to hide and protest to high heaven with the innocent instead of isolating them and punishing them

  35. justice

Naive, I only just saw your reply which confirms that pilferage is stealing and not at all distinguishable therefrom as you suggested in your original post. Now, are you suggesting that because it is done in small amounts it is different in terms of legal culpabiblity? I will get a dictionary; if you promise to learn to understand yours. Deal?

  36. Anonymous

    Ok, BK.

I will listen to Swaggart on adultery… Owen Arthur on adultery and honesty in public life … Clinton on adultery and smoking without inhaling…

  38. Rumplestilskin

The alleged ‘tiefings’ are a side-issue.

Please do not let this issue distract from the problem of an inadequate facility that needs to be addressed!

THAT is actually the gretaer issue right now.

    Clever distraction.

  39. Rumplestilskin

PS – Meaning that if the alleged ‘tiefings’ are not the underlying cause of inadequate patient care, general and emergency, then whatever those causes are should come as a priority and the ‘tiefings’ issue should come second to addressing improved patient care.

Administration to improve controls to prevent further ‘tiefing’ if it has occurred (and pass any specific cases to DPP).

Leave it at that and deal with what the Government administration has caused, lack of resources, lack of doctors and nurses, lack of planning.
