Pathetic Nation News States: “SUNDAY SUN investigations have revealed…”

Barbados Free Press Is A Kitchen-Table Outfit – But The Nation News Is Not Supposed To Be…

Folks, here at Barbados Free Press we are just ordinary citizens trying to make a difference for all of us on this island. It is obvious to our readers (sometimes painfully obvious) that we have no experience or training in journalism. We have no schedule for posting, no history of political involvement to draw upon and our writing skills are often in need of a little more practice and a dictionary (to be kind).

Each of us sometimes comes home from a long day or night at our “real” job and then sits in front of a blank computer screen wondering what the heck we can write about because it is our turn and the others are counting on us to post something.

The Blog Forum Allows You To Keep Us Honest And Accurate

Once in a while, we drop a big “clanger” – but the blog forum allows our fans and detractors alike to immediately take us to task. We allow everyone’s comments to stand and this helps to keep the blog and our work as accurate and honest as possible – certainly much more honest than a traditional newspaper where a thousand people can recognize a lie but nobody is able to communicate that publicly.

We Worry About Being Found Out…

Sometimes I am frightened to death that certain people in government will beat our proxy system and discover who we are – because I know there would be real consequences for our businesses, our jobs and our families. Not everybody is happy when BFP reveals a secret meeting between a developer and the Prime Minister – or the details behind a $100 million dollar “no tender” government contract. Not everybody is happy when we post photos of a Government Minister living on expropriated land.

But for all our mistakes, fears and amateur status, it isn’t too much to say that so far, our efforts have started to change political and social discussion in Barbados.

Ordinary people are starting to talk openly about corruption, the lack of accountability in our system – and the misspending of tax dollars on showpiece “first world” stupidities while thousands of Bajan citizens still lack running water and still squat over pit toilets.

Consider The “Professional” Journalism Of The Nation News

The journalists and editors at the Nation News are full-time news professionals with the education, experience, contacts and resources that accompany any professional media organization.

Professional journalists are supposed to be one of the checks and balances that helps to defend rights and freedoms in a democracy. The media has the resources to investigate what ordinary citizens cannot – or what ordinary citizens fear to investigate.

The media is supposed to have a public trust – a duty – to investigate and reveal what ordinary citizens cannot. That is the real news media…

… And then there is that professional government advertising agency called The Nation News…

“SUNDAY SUN INVESTIGATIONS HAVE REVEALED…”

Wow! This must be HOT NEWS!

“Investigations have revealed…”

In our minds, we picture dedicated journalists hunting down wrongdoers – watching and skillfully interviewing involved persons and witnesses. Piecing the story together at 3am and finally arguing with the editor who fears to publish the truth. Shaming the editor into doing what is right and just…

And here it is folks…

Big Shopping Plans

by Sanka Price

IMAGINE PLANELOADS OF VINCENTIANS, Grenadians, Dominicans, even Trinidadians, flying into Barbados to shop for the latest in high quality clothing, jewellery and other consumer durables.

Given the notorious high cost of living here, this may seem unrealistic. But a plan is being conceived where this seemingly improbable idea can become a reality.

SUNDAY SUN investigations have revealed that concerted efforts are under way to make Barbados the shopping hub of the Eastern Caribbean.

  1. Surely BFP did not “reveal” the meeting Kerins had with the Min of Planning & Dev and Leonard Nurse? That came out in public forum at Christ Church Parish Hall town meeting. And it was not said to be a secret meeting but a routine one for an investment application. It has only taken on an aura of secrecy because it is yet to be publicly acknowledged. All BFP has done in this respect is report what others wrote what they heard.

To link that meeting with Kerins’ statement, “Government can’t back out now…” is pure speculation.

Whoever wrote this piece – whether robert, cliverton or marcus – all I can tell you is I feel your heart.

I had so much admiration for harold Hoyte and his group when they started their newspaper and I’ve always supported, but what is currently going on and has been going on for the past 12 years is beyond explanation or justification.

When the Erskine Sandiford administration was in power, the nation and starcom network beat that poor man and his team to a frazzle, and note, there was not a scent of corruption on that man.Now the blp is in and we are expecting some balance it is pathetic the sucking up and open bias that’s going on.
They only have news when there is in-fighting in the Dlp.Now that all that is resolved in the DLP we getting stories like the one you quoted above.

There are 2 articles I wanted to quote from written by columnists on the caribbean media – one from Jamaica – which sadly I can’t find;and the other from Ms Salandy-Brown out of Trinidad. Both articles were more or less saying the same thing.

Ms Salandy-Browne says in Newsday may 4th 2006:Carib. journalists met in b’dos on World free Press day to discuss freedom of the press.
“The freedom to express oneself and to publish and broadcast without hinder is not widely enjoyed in this region;because we don’t have banned books and imprisoned journalists doesnot mean we have a free press.Censorship is still with us.

There is a certain relationship between the censor and the censored – it’s how far one is willing to go.Newspapers in the caribbean are prepared to go hardly any distance in holding vested interest to account.

Journalism is not about wanting to be liked or self-promotion….. a free media promotes tranparency, accountability and counteracts corruption, enabling good governance and the strengthening of civil society……There is dishonour in keeping the electorate ignorant and toadying up to elected officials.

Over sensitive goverments are on losing wickets….the worldwide web is still unregulated…..enough of us can access information.

By being intimidated into patronising the public, the media exposes itself to the same ridicule and lack of trust citizens any may have for their government”.

  3. BFP

    Naive (what a name!) said…

“Surely BFP did not β€œreveal” the meeting Kerins had with the Min of Planning & Dev and Leonard Nurse? That came out in public forum at Christ Church Parish Hall town meeting. And it was not said to be a secret meeting but a routine one for an investment application…”

OK Naive – where in the Barbados print or electronic media did the meeting between the developer and the Prime Minister get mentioned?

Oh… nowhere! Only here – even to this day.

Our reporter was at the meeting… and we broke the story.

Insofar as the meeting being a “secret” – yup… it was secret alright – as is the information as to whether or not there is a written agreement between developer Kerins and the government. Hey… maybe Mr. Kerins invested “four million dollars” without a written agreement – maybe not. But the citizens of Barbados deserve to know.

And uh…. Oh Yeah, Mr. or Ms. Naive….

Please tell us where you got the information that…

“And it was not said to be a secret meeting but a routine one for an investment application.”

… because that wasn’t said at the meeting.

    How do you know?

Oh.. I see… you’re a BLP hack stating “Nothing to see here, folks! Move along. Move along!”

  4. Anonymous-

This story has me in stitches. The image of the monkeys at the top was brilliant and the admission of being ‘scared to death’ was riveting. Good job BFP. You’ve made my night.

  5. Pat

Anonymous, are you assigned to “monitor” this site? If so, how much do you get paid? Does it go directly to your account in Amsterdam? Can I get a job like yours without leaving the warmth of my basement? Pssst…….(me i uh blp too u kno). I dont want $$ sent here though – taxes. I keep a small one on the rock.

  6. BFP Cliverton

Anonymous is not in Amsterdam. Although he runs his browser through Amsterdam, he fouled up one time and left his JAVA enabled – and we caught him out.

He is in London – and you can guess where!

    He’s a diplomat.

  7. BFP Cliverton

I’m not logged in tonight, so I don’t know if the above “anonymous” is the same as our BLP friend “anonymous”.

Tell you tomorrow when I’m back home.

  8. Anon

    BFP Cliverton

Oh crikey, you mean to tell me that is how our money is being spent?and that is how low this blp government will go?
The worst thing that ever happened to barbados is when this administration came into power.

Under Tom Adams you had some measure of censorship being imposed but these were more selected persons targeted now it seems the idea is to shut down dissent whenever it rears its head and by any means necessary.

People like anonymous make me sick to my stomach that they can actually allow themselves to be used like this, just to keep ‘yuh lil pick’.

Before Owen Arthur we felt free, not so now.People seem to be constantly looking over their shoulders if they criticise.

Before Owen Arthur we had instances of corruption but never in the history of Barbados have we seen a pillaging of the treasury as we see now.

Before Owen Arthur we had a very small minority of persons in leadership positions crossing from one party to the other, now we have a prime minister who makes it his front line strategy to induce key party members from the only opposition party to his goverment at the tax payers expense while at the same time buying out some of the professionals and academics at cave hill e.g. Hilary Beckles,George Belle,Marion Howard,Andrew Downes,Frank Alleyne, the trade unionists etc etc (Frank Walcott must be rolling over in his grave).

Life for Barbados has irrevocably been changed, and we have lost our innocence.
Cliverton I am glad you found out about anonymous, now I’ll scroll down a little faster when I come to his posting.

  9. Yo!

The one-party state is nearing completion
    (in BLP eyes)!

I find it curious that the BFP would dedicate time to discovering who I am, while at the same time being so steadfastly against Government doing the same to them. Hmm. A note to the wise; thinking you’ve discovered who I am isn’t going to be half as sweet as when you people are discovered. And, in any event, my biases have been clearly laid on the table from day one, unlike this undercover DLP propaganda machine with all its lies and scandal parading as legitimate news for the world to see. Hang in there Marcus, Cliverton, Shona and Robert. Day does run ’til night catch it, eh?

  12. Anon

    BFP

You would have thought that anonymous would have been remorseful and ashamed about the role he has been asked to play by this government of spying and using intimidatory tactics to try and shut down this site.

That’s my taxpayers money for goodness sake being spent on slimeballs like anonymous and blp politicians.

Hopefully if the government and its pimps try to do anything to this site and to marcus, cliverton and the rest they will be getting my support in any protest action they decide to take.

  13. Anonymous-

You would note that I did not entertain their accusations because, like everything else they say, it is nonsense. If you choose to believe the Barbados Free Press when they allege they know that I am being sponsored by the government to intimidate them, then you’re just as ludicrous as they are and you should stick to this site with the other commentators because it’s obvious that you allow these people to think for you. Why don’t they tell you who David Estwick regularly posts here as? Hm, that’s right.. it would show who really runs this site.

  14. Anon

How would you know who David Estwick posts as?You don’t receive these posts.

I guess you are hoping we will buy your propoganda.

  15. Littleboy56@caribsurf.com

Last night’s DLP meeting in Weston was another blow for the BLP…Some questions were asked that need answers.
Did Owen know about the free STV?
Is Concorde really going to be moved to the Bridgetown port?
Is it really going to cost the government $6 million?

  16. Mountie

@Littleboy56—quote”Did Owen know about the free STV?
Is Concorde really going to be moved to the Bridgetown port?
Is it really going to cost the government $6 million?”
Productivity is at at an all time high with this government. They are producing a disaster and controversy everyday. Must be a record.
Isnt Owen the minister with CBC portfolio? Well whatever happens under that portfolio he must know about.Duuuuh! Then again Noel MM Lynch didnt know about the sale of the Hilton. Now they moving the Caribbean’s only supersonic white elephant? Who propose this cuh dear not MM Lynch again? My word $6million? Where is all this money that is being wastefully and stupidly spent coming from? Can I get in line at government’s money trough? I have bank loans that are killing me.

  17. BFP- You have me wrong, sir- I am no BLP whitewasher, but your ardent supporter, so I will not quibble that you “reported” what was “revealed” verbally at the townhall meeting.

But I must reiterate that you reported on July 11th Kerins had a “private” meeting with the PM and Perm Sec, Min of Housing, Lands and Environment, not a “secret” one. There is a world of difference, (obviously their meeting would not have been public). It seems quite probable the meeting was an official one relating to the application even if not specified. But it is still very fishy that neither the PM nor Perm Sec will admit to it. Keep up the good work!

  18. Wait i asked BFP to lay bare my accusation that Velzo and Trueblue are one and the same, using the same information that they decided to use to call out “Anonymous, which invited comments about dangerous ground, etc. Is this not a double standard for the so called “Free press” ? Anyway i found out who this group is, but i will not aid the BLP by divulging de info.

Other than by the colour of their shirts, can you tell the difference between todays politicians? 80% of the existing BLP parliamentary group were card carrying Dems at some point is their sorry political existance.

    Adrian

A big shout out to you.Only a few days ago I was saying to myself I haven’t been hearing from you.

Nice to know you’re o.k. although our views may differ.

    Welcome back.

  21. BFP SAY: But for all our mistakes, fears and amateur status, it isn’t too much to say that so far, our efforts have started to change political and social discussion in Barbados.
    —————————————————————–

To discuss is to Talk, and if all you have changed is the level, tone, and direction of de talk, I submit that Bajans who are already fed up wid de lotta talk, long or otherwise aint impress. I am not impress with your success, You have merely filled a void that needed to be filled for a long time, and I suspect that you have done so not being carefull about appearing one-sided, politically and socially partisan. Indeed you have allowed yourself to seen in such light and maybe this is so because it is indeed so. πŸ˜€

  22. BFP

    Hi Adrian

I don’t recall about Vezlo and Trueblue… maybe it wasn’t me? (Robert here)

I’ll look back in the records and see what I can see.

As far as discovering who we are…

    ha ha…

Call it out right now on the Comments – no problem here!

… because you must have it wrong, otherwise you would have already said hello to me on the street!

Good to see you back fur sure tho.

    Robert

  23. BFP Cliverton

    For Sure Robert

Adrian would not have been able to keep from telling if he knew!

  24. BFP Cliverton

    Come on, Adrian!

Tell us all who we are right now here in public!

    πŸ˜‰

  25. Hey Jupiter i am still here struggling in this rat race called life.

….I was here all along watching the BFP attack the BLP under the guise of holding the GoB to account. πŸ˜€ Yes attacking the BLP with uranium tip Tank rounds while engaging the DLP with small arms fire. πŸ˜€ I for the life of me cannot see the BIG difference between the two parties (enemy of the people) that would lead to this evern bigger difference in attack tactics. πŸ˜€

  26. Jupiter

    Adrian

Please don’t spoil it.This is not about BFP,this is about us the citizens wanting to vent and BFP giving us the forum to do so.

My opinion is that BFP is not a DLP operation nor are they biased towards any one party.

They are just reflecting what we in society are feeling ie:frustration at the high level of government corruption, naked greed, open nepotism, immoral behaviour, lack of transparency and on and on.

I think the BFP bunch are lovely to put up with insults and threats from BLP operatives like anonymous etc. and continue to posts his comments.

    Long may they live.

  27. ha ha ha alright man you mek mock sport at my claim, of course if I knew who you were i would make it known to you that i do know. But i have gotten as close, to an association that if i press i may be able to determine who you are. But i don’t want to know as i cannot be trusted to blow wunnuh cover. πŸ˜€ Plus i don’t think wunnuh realize what wunnuh sitting pun wid this site and the potential it has to change the media in Barbados, and that wunnuh can never realize if the perception is allowed to build that this is a Subsidiary of the DLP, and that perception is out there. Maybe it is true.

  28. ….But Jupiter what if you are and have been a life long DLP supporter? shouldn’t i be concern that this site which you finds such high favour with may indeed espouse the same short-term goal of a change in Government as you do which is disguise as real disgust at the Long-term institutionalize government corruption, naked greed, open nepotism, immoral behaviour, lack of transparency and on and on? Uh mean how does a change in the actors, the person responsible and not responsible help resolve what is the result of a flawed parliamentary system? It boggles my mind that Thompy whom you back and who has many sneaky deals in his short cabinet life can embody the change that is needed to remove Owen and his set of sneaky deals. Only in our minds can gold plated aluminum jewelry cost us so much. πŸ˜€

  29. Jupiter

    Adrian

No offence, but please observe the tenets of the english language – I can’t follow these long sentences that ramble on and on.

Anyway Adrian why is that as soon as you criticise this BLP gov’t you are branded as a DLP supporter.

There is no administration whether DLP or BLP that has been as corrupt as this one.I know Royal Rumble, anonymous and others have been trying to throw tidbits about David Thompson to suggest that he is as corrupt as these Blp politicians, but truthfully that will not stick, the evidence proves the contrary.

If we allow this party to stay in any longer than the law allows,we will indeed wake up and realise that B’dos does not belong to us.

  30. ha ha ha Jupiter you are a genious. You cannot understand what i wrote yet you are able to in the proceeding paragraphs attempt to answer the charges that i laid out in the text that according to you and as a result of not following english grammer rules you could not understand.

What measurements are you using to suggest that this BLP GoB is MORE CURRUPT than previous ones?
With this position are you suggesting that corruption is acceptable up to a certain level? again what is that mystical level?
    ———————————————————–
    Jupiter says:
    {If we allow this party to stay in any longer than the law allows,we will indeed wake up and realise that B’dos does not belong to us. }

How do you know this to be so? did you have a conversation with God?

  31. Jupiter

Good night,Adrian,I see you are back in full force and well rested.

    Later

  32. Anonymous-

If Adrian is the support that the BLP had on this site, thank God I arrived.

  33. Anonymous

Party membership is for smart people who shall remain anonymous. Clearly i don’t qualify. πŸ˜€ but i would hazard a guess that God aint had uh ting to do wid your arrival.

  34. ….Wait that is me above there. To many computers bout de place. πŸ˜€ anyway Anonymous- too differentiate you from just any plane old doppleganger can i refer to you “anonymouse-” ?

  35. Anonymous-

You could refer to me as your father for all I care. Depending on your age and constituency I may very well be, but I would hate to think I’ve fathered such an ass.

  36. Anony mouse-, roars—-I think! I did hear something. How many things you would like to be? lets see a doppleganger, super hero “anony mouse” and now a village ram? Being a village ram conflicts with being a supporter of todays BLP unless you are a throw back Tom Adams Bee? which would mean that you don’t get much recognition. πŸ˜€

  37. Talking about “Throw back Tom Adams Bees” Lionel “De Pimp” Graig, comes to mind, but that was a younger Lammie the most current interation of him is Lionel “Mr. Leonards” Graig. πŸ˜€ Whatever became of this case? was it settle? does Lammie owe anything? Mia had some choice words for this case and incident, did Owen promise Lammie anything? “Anony-mouse” although you are not a fly could have been the proverbial “fly on the wall” you still have the kind of access that the rest of us dumb idiots don’t, can you squeak a peak on any of this? πŸ˜€ I promise to listen intently. πŸ˜€

    Anonymous,
One thing this administration has done for the average person. More them poor. They mashed up nuff small business so the the big boys get get all the business opportunities. Shame on you and your crew
