Piggies In Barbados: Readers Hammer BLP Blog For Misleading Partial Quote

BLP Blog Uses A Partial Quote To Imply Barbados Free Press Supports BLP over DLP – But It Isn't So!

Readers are leaving critical comments at the BLP Barbados Labour Party Blog after a BLP article used a partial quote in a manner some are describing as "deceptive" and even "intentional".

The BLP Blog article "No Confidence in the Other Parties" quotes The Barbados Free Press as saying the following…

"The Barbados Free Press says

"As far as the DLP goes, we don’t have much faith that they will be organized well enough to find their way to dinner, let alone run a government anytime soon. And they were as much piggies at the trough when they were in power "

The Barbados Labour Party Blog then goes on to say "Well of course we agree with this statement. Can you just imagine Dr. Estwick giving a presentation to the World Health Organisation for Barbados. Kellman giving a presenation to the United Nations or the EU for Barbados…."

What Did The Original Barbados Free Press Statement Really Say?

"As far as the DLP goes, we don’t have much faith that they will be organized well enough to find their way to dinner, let alone run a government anytime soon. And they were as much piggies at the trough when they were in power as is the present government. As for the PEP, we can’t even see them on the radar."

Original quote taken from comments section of a Barbados Free Press article here.

It is apparent that the use of the partial quote substantially changes the meaning – making the Barbados Free Press appear to be critical of only the DLP. Even the article title implies that the Barbados Free Press has confidence in the BLP, but (by implication) "No Confidence in the OTHER Parties".

In fact, our original full statement likens both DLP and BLP politicians to "piggies at the trough". (Click here to see our original statement)

Intentional Deception Or An Accident?

One BLP Blog reader commented…

In my opinion it was intentional because they cut a sentence in two. It wasn’t like they grabbed a full sentence without reading the next one. they cut it off at the word that changes the meaning.

It looks deliberate to me. How stupid do they think the people are?

While another is not so sure…

The partial quote is very deceptive and is a surprise that BLP would try it because it is so ovious.

Barbados Labour Party Responds

"We have edited the offending text of the quote but of course it jusy goes to show how taking a quote out of context can give a completely different meaning to what was intended. Makes me think of the Nutrient Enrichment quote. Maybe this was also out of context."

While we think that the BLP Blog has acted properly in attempting to respond to readers' concerns, the new quote again does not fairly portray what was said. Even the title "No Confidence In Other Parties" implies that Barbados Free Press has confidence in the Barbados Labour Party, but "No confidence in other parties".

We aren't that concerned, of course, because our readers are quite capable of sorting things out for themselves.

    What a lovely picture.
With your permission we would like to use it for a post.

  2. BFP

    Hello Dr. Duguid

We can’t give you permission to use the image as we do not “own” the image. It just showed up in an email from a reader – with the suggestion that the BFP create an annual award called “Barbados Piggies At The Trough” or “Piggy” for short.

We have created the award, and you will be pleased to know that recipients of this prestigious award will not be limited to current politicians or the current government.

With past politicians and events all eligible for a “Piggy” it should be a heavy nomination slate, I think!

wuh loss de Pot calling de Kettle black. One knows what to expect from the BLP after all they are not misrepresenting who they are.

Duguid just do a right mouse click over the pic and save um to your hard-drive …..can’t give permission my foot. If you can do that i will email um to yuh.

    We cannot “give permission” because…

1/ We do not own the rights to the image and have no idea if it is owned or is in the public domain.

    and

2/ For us to give permission in writing for Dr. Duguid to use the image would be to adopt or share any liability that the BLP might incur for posting an image that they don’t own the rights to.

Yes, it is true that the good Doctor could just right click on the image and then use it – but he already knows that, just as he knows about copyright issues and so asked permission for an image that was possibly owned by BFP. His asking for permission is more than a courtesy, (although ii must be said that we have always found Dr. Duguid to be courteous and dignified both online and in person.)

Adrian, you seem to think that everything that is done at BFP is either mean-spirited or with some sort of hidden agenda. While you are welcome to your opinions, in this case either your lack of knowledge of the subject under discussion, or your fixed perspective, has placed you in an indefensible position.

    Love the picture.
Cannot wait to see the nomination rules. Is the competition based on who tief the most money from the country over the years? Or who has the biggest overseas bank account at this moment?

My thoughts on your activities, and agenda, is well founded. As for whether your agenda is hidden, you are or at least you think you are, but your agenda is well understood by me, and is becoming very clear to others.

Ross: I hope it includes tenure at the trough, cross reference with the amount of millions particular contestants have accumulated. 😀

  8. ross

I hope it includes who has the most value in assets here and overseas.

  9. ross

I hope it includes the assets of family members (wives etc.) & close associates too.

  10. Adrian

Ross: How about former politicians? desease and alive? Saint John, Johnson, St.Joseph, those that deNILES taking people money as legal council, wasn’t there former DLP parliamentarian that is still a fugitive from justice in Barbados? Um should be interesting if done in a non-partisan manner, I don’t have a pig in this race so it will be fund to see. 😀

  11. It is good that BFP offers some level of opposition to the Government but how many Voting Bajans are reading this Blog?

The BLP has The Advocate, The Nation ( Ezra and Clyde) and their own Blog to support their agenda.

They also have regular callers on Brasstacks (Linton and Craig among others) who are good at damage control.

This Blog is for those of us who want to read and see factual information. At least the pictures of the environment don’t lie.

With their heads (D & B becuase P has not had the opportunity yet) in the trough it is no wonder they cannot and do not want to see what is going on around them.

  13. honeybee

Please have a competition for members of the private sector too, not just politicians.

  14. BLP member

This BLP Party getting me real vex. I don’t understand how the wifes of some of them leaders able to build dem big houses and don’t work no way. Dem think we stupid. There is no way I voting for Owin. He time gone.

  15. How you meand de wifes? who wife? and are you suggesting that they are building another house on the side? Duguid your wife building a big house that you don’t know about???? 😀 man de Bees and Dees just get a raise so it must be above board.

  16. william duguid

Maybe BLP member needs to enlighten us. I am certainly not aware of any neither do I think I should be involved or that it is any of my business. There are alot of hardworking Barbadians building very big houses with very big mórtgages. It is obvious with the upturn in their incomes and the economy that the banks have confidence that they will be able to sustain them.
