Who Owns Barbados Free Press? Part II

Our reader Adrian also wants to know, "Who Owns Barbados Free Press?" and also expresses the opinion that the Barbados Free Press is too partisan. He speculates that we might be DLP supporters*.

Here is what he wrote in the comment section of our original post…

….I think it is a legitimate question and quiery. Yes who owns this website. I can only speak for me , and that it is a question that i asked, in addition to what is the real objective of this site. Initially i welcomed it from the view that it is delving into, and opening up the meany secrets in Barbados, I am for that wholeheartedly. However these secrets should not be selective, and care should be given to not appearing impartial. This to my estimation is not the case.

At this point in it’s life i think the site is tad too partisan, so yes i too would like to know who own um, at the same time i would caution the BLP and the GoB not to attempt censure. No matter what, censure is never a good thing. I wonder if this site and the TILII will be around after a DLP government is elected, say in seven or eight years from now. D

And here is our response to Adrian and our other readers…

Hello Adrian

Very good to see you asking questions that should be asked… of us, of the Government and of the other political parties. Frankly, had Bajans been demanding government accountability for the last 40 years instead of allowing themselves to be bribed with their own tax money and mortgaged future, Barbados wouldn’t be in the mess it finds itself in.

As to your very well-asked points, here is our response…

Firstly, we here at Barbados Free Press have to remain anonymous for obvious reasons – Barbados is too small a country and those in government have such a tremendous sense of entitlement that they are not above using their position to cause difficulties for those who question their actions, motivations and associations…. and, oh yes… and their net worth.

We fear those in power – from any political party – because Barbados does not have the necessary legislative safeguards in place to ensure that the rule of law will be an effective ultimate refuge for citizens. Those in power ARE the law. Even the Auditor General fears publishing an annual report… notwithstanding that it is just so much fish roe anyway. (”notwithstanding” – Robert’s new $50 word of the day!)

Barbados: a place where a man can be high in power and an intricate part of the government on one day, and the next day be appointed as the Chief Justice – the person who is supposed to judge and arbitrate litigation between citizens and the Government. The “Government” being the Chief Justice’s old drinking buddies.

If there is a “smell test” to the “Rule of Law” in Barbados – it smells like Oistin wharf at fish-gutting time.

Neither Marcus, Robert, Shona nor Clive (our newest writer) have ever been a member of any political party. We are just ordinary people who are concerned for our country, our future, and the future of our families.

Make no mistake: we believe that everything Bajans have accomplished in the last 40 years hangs on a tenuous thread. Economies and regional political alliances have changed, our resources have been abused and most of all, a series of governments – both DLP & BLP – have misused their power to feather their own nests.

If we seem to be focusing upon the BLP Government – it is because they ARE the government of the day. The DLP Government of old was as corrupt and short-sighted as the current BLP government… and you can quote us on that.

Should the DLP or the People’s Empowerment Party* form the next government, we will also call upon them to institute the necessary system changes and legislative safeguards to ensure ongoing accountability of elected officials and civil servants. And… we will report what their Ministers are drinking if they have a $100 lunch at the Savannah Hotel.

In short… the Barbados Free Press is not BLP, DLP or PEP. We are not black, white, Asian or coloured.

We are Barbadians.

(and Adrian… if there is a subject that you think we are not covering – or are slanted on – then write a piece and we will publish it unedited. Any subject, any position. Over 1,000 people a day will read it. That is our offer to you and any other person who loves Barbados.)

Cheers!

Robert

*Oh, and by the way, if we were DLP or PEP supporters, the first thing we would do would be to fix them up with a website.

  1. This site will appear biased against the BLP simply because they are the party in power and all Government related problems are their responsibility. This is their third term in office.
There is not much the DLP can do other than talk.
This website will hopefully give a voice to Barbadians who care more about Barbados than any political party.

Barbados is a wonderful country except for some very serious problems that need public discussion.
Thanks to the owners of this website for caring.

  2. ross

I second Hants’ comment. Keep up the excellent work!

  3. Steve

keep the good work up. there will always be yardfowls/palin cocks who love to crow. Did anyone read Sylvan Greenidge’s letter to the editor in the Nation yesterday call for BLP supporters to not call/listen to the call-ins. can always tell when a popularity of a government is waning.

  4. John

    Steve

Saw it, his complaint was that BLP supporters could not get on to comment as they were being frustrated by the moderator and producer.

Maybe they should try Barbados Free Press or Barbados Forum or … Too many outlets besides the call in programmes to complain about lack of access to discussion on matters of public interest.

Did you know that a new description for political party faithfuls was coined back at the start of GEMS?

One private sector businessman (with vision!??!) pointed out publicly that after GEMS there would be no more YARD FOWLS, …. they would all have become YARD TURKEYS!!

See, …. not only politicians can dream up new words. No definition was ever given, or needed, but the meaning was clear from the way the word was used!!

Guess the politics of inclusion has been a bit costly and in need of more GEMS.

    Keep up the good work!!

Barbadians are not stupid. They just take a little time act.

  5. …..Thanks Robert for your response. I still think your site is a tad partisan, thus far, and this maybe so, partially as a result of the reality that Hant alluded too, anyway it is by far the best site that brings the many misgivings that takes place secretly in Bim to the fore. So until i can be certain of your politcal non-alliance and that this is not another gimmick of one party against the other then i will continue to enjoy and respond to your many revelations, but skeptical of the reasons given, and the agenda undertaken for so doing.

….wait Steve are you refering to me as a yardfowl/palin cock who love to crow? So Robert, Shona and Clive aren’t crowing too? or there isn’t anything wrong with them being a yardfowl or palin cock. 😀 maybe dem crowing a tune that is more appealing to you. Oh well 😀

  6. John

Yard fowl is ok, we all are in some form or fashion as many of us are led by our perceptions and don’t diligently investigate every single fact!!

But for heaven’s sake, don’t become a yard turkey!!

  7. John

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” – Margaret Mead

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” – Martin Luther King

Taken from the Advocate of today, April 19, 2006.

This paper used to print its creed at the top of the front page but now I look, it is missing. Anyone know why?

Seem to remember something like “‘Gainst the wrongs that lack resistance for the cause that lacks assistance and the good that I can do”. Seems like a long time ago I read those words, …. or something like them.

Maybe I have the wrong paper and am confused.

  8. BFP

“The the cause that lacks assistance, ‘gainst the wrongs….”

When we set up the Barbados Advocate sidebar link on the front page, we copied their slogan.

You can still see it by putting your mouse over the link on the front page.

  9. Steve

well if de cap fit u go head!

we all will have perspectives that on any given day will appear to be biase to the person on the opposing size.

  10. BFP: The Advocate news is a good example. When i read their political editorials and they seem to favour the BLP I am not mislead as it is clear which party the Managing director supports. The same is true in my opinion of the Nationnews and most moderators of the VOB (Dennis Johnson is to my mind is an exception) call in programs that they do not favour the BLP. This helps me put their statements in perspective.

…so given the birth of this site, and some of the presentations of the many situations it has covered which BTW i am all for uncovering, seems politically slanted. This could be nothing more on my part, than being happy that this site is unearthing the secrets in Bim in an investigative journalistic fashioned, and i am asking, “are they fuh real?”, as i want them to be fuh real, but time is the only method that can tell to my satisfaction, that this is so.

Oh BTW i don’t have anything against the call ins, i does listen to them religiously and does record many of them. 😀

  11. John

Maybe the question should not be “who owns Barbados Free Press”.

It should be “who owns Barbados”.

  12. ….Why would that matter? According to some, the chinese own America, so what if the capital inflow to Barbados is from foriegn sources? are you in the habit of giving, spending, and investing your money without some form of ownership?

….per your question, it doesn’t have to be one or the other, Both question can be asked, we are not ONE trick Ponys, we can ask the two questions and retain both answers. 😀

….Anyway i asked the latter question to some fellas from my home village and all said Cow Williams and de 1% percent Bajan whites. 😀 now i am sure that this answer does not square with your own answer. To think of it i can remember some of the response to Cow Williams wealth: Hard work, good investment, etc. so if true i ask again what is the difference between Cow’s actions and results and that of the foreign investment inflows into Barbados?

So as a Capitalist lover,—–those who has large investments in Barbados isn’t at this time a concern for me and as a political junkie who owns Barbados Free press in light of and in my view it’s slanted reporting is of interest to me. 😀

  13. John

    Adrian

Guess we have different priorities, … and perceptions.

    Vive la difference.

    See, I speak french too!!

  15. Hello,
I am researching my family tree – Bowen/Carrington – St. Andrew’s Parish, grandfather was “mixed Bajan” whose family owned local store. Name Rupert Harold Bowen born 1888, parents Alexander Ashby Bowen & Mary Christian Inniss, they did marry. I have been reseaching archives each visit to Barbados and corresponding to whomever and have received much valuable information, including an oral connection 104 years old. My father, Cecil was contacted (1984) about land which belonged to family. How do I research as you have listed much valuable info regarding sugar cane? Of course he living in the States did not sign any papers to turn the land over, but mentioned that since family was living on the land, it was best to let them stay. Now, we know much better. Any help will be most appreciated as I will be coming back in June to further research.

  16. Wishing in vain

Congrats on a job well done you have certainly given us the ordinary person in the street an avenue to vent our feelings with this immoral, corrupt Gov’t that is the BLP.
And for those that ask why it appears biased it is for no other reason that the ruling party has committed many crimes against the taxpayers of this land and we have no voice in the traditional media and BFP permits us to expose these wrong doings without fear of victimisation and anger from the mongoose gang.

  17. Maria

The DLP has been in opposition for 13 years and they are yet to produce a tangle document to the public as to their vision (because they have none) for the development of Barbados.

I therefore conclude that the Barbados Free Press is the DLP’s initiative as it relates to e-commerce –Thompson continues to insult Barbadians with the sale of innuendoes.

  18. True Native

I should dam well hope the DLP would NEVER produce a “tangle” document. I think we can safely leave that to the BLP.

  19. Rumplestilskin

A ‘tangle’ document? Shucks, you mean all this time it was a misunderstanding. We have been waiting for full disclosure and financial reporting but ‘tangle’ documents are the current method of explaining government expenditures?

Like the Cruise ship thing? That does seem to be ‘tangled’.

    Apologies, now we know.

But, can we also have instructions on how to ‘untangle’ the documents?

  20. Maria

Unlike you DLP supporters, I am big enough to say that is was a typo. It should have read ….”tangible document.”

You guys being true DLP people cannot see the bigger picture but only concentrate on small issues.

I am not surprised that you did not overlook the typo; this is due to your limited intellectual capacity which can only retain trivial matters.

  21. Wishing in Vain

Maria can you tell us anything more about that cheque that Owing deposited to his account for the small sum of $ 750,000.00 ??? Or about his share in the overcosting on the Jail to the tune of $ 100 mill what is the split among he Owing, Nicholls and Bannister??? Or what is his share and Nicholls’s share on the slot machine deal for importing a 1000 new machines to be run by Americans?

    Maria,

Poor language syntax = poor credibilty !

You continue to display your ignorance on this site !

You are yet to demonstrate any coherence to fact or thought !

You have a mind that is waiting……to be used !

No wonder you are so fanatical about this corrupt BLP government !

  24. True Native

Poor Maria, not only is she ignorant but she is totally bereft of a sense of humour. She is grumpy like most Bees. Mr. Barrow once asked on a political platform, “You ever noticed how miserable BLP people always look?” True, true.

  25. Maria

Must I remind you that Mr. Barrow was a member of the same BLP, did he look miserable?

  26. True Native

Before he left that crowd, sometimes yes. Oh ye of little …. intelligence.

  27. Maria

With your level of intelligence is “Blog Boy” the only job you are qualified to do?
How much commission are you paid by the DEMs; is it by response time or by the number of comments posted??

  28. OverDeveloped

“The DLP has been in opposition for 13 years and they are yet to produce a tangible document to the public as to their vision for the development of Barbados.” she sez…

You mean Barbados isn’t over-developed enough, already??

I am quite serious with this allegation of OVER-developed.
Just speak to tourists who come in from the UK.! One guy took a look around the South Coast and commented to me that it looked just like tacky overdeveloped Spain!
    – so think carefully on any further development for this already over-developed island.

Maybe the DLP are entirely right in their “lack of vision” for the further development of this crowded rock, because we need no further “development”
unless of course the overall goal is a Manhattan-like island state, concrete steel and glass, developed from sea to shining sea! – which I could easily believe!

  29. Comment

Here’s a comment I found on a Carnival Destiny opinion page, talking about the various island-destinations this guy went to.
    here’s his thoughts on…
    Barbados:
While we were in St. Thomas, we met a man who was born in Barbados. He told us to visit the side of the island known as “The Gap”.
Here there is a beautiful beach and many restaurants.
The only catch is the long cab ride from the ship.
Cabs can be expensive in Barbados, so always ask how much before you get in! Prices are negotiable. When eating in Barbados try the Flying Fish sandwich, a local favorite. Be sure to spread on some of the famous Barbados pepper sauce for some extra zest. The Jolly Roger land excursion was a lot of fun. Very similar to the Calypso Tour. The rest of the Island is very dirty and poor. Not much else to see or do here.

As we whiz by in our cars, we don’t see the awful litter along our roadsides.
I was recently forced to walk a mile to Sheraton Mall, and believe me when I tell you that you don’t want to see (or know about) the constant trail of simple litter that makes our roadsides unsightly!
I was alarmed, quite frankly(rarely do I walk). Everything was there from cigarette packets to milk cartons, plastic bags, you name it, it’s there at the Bajan roadside, I promise you!

We are indeed a STINK nation, and tourists notice this sorta thing, even if our National Pride blinds us, so we don’t!!
All those nasty white people throwing Kentucky and Chefette Fried Chicken boxes out of their cars! Eeeuuwww!

  30. True Native

“Blog Boy” – I love it! How long it took you to think that one up? Anyhow, thanks for the qualification. As to your second sentence, see my note to the DLP.

  31. True Native

DLP BARBADOS: How much wunna all paying me in commission? Please tell Maria, cos she like she concerned that I should be getting paid. You-all aint tell me nothing ’bout no commission nor fees nor nothing so. Maria is de body who worried. For now I will remain poor, peaceful and polite. (And a unpaid supporter!). One Love.

  32. Anonymous

nice to read that comment about not being necessarily a PAID supporter of the DLP.

It’s just something we do, as our social duty,
in order to change Government for something better.
We don’t need monetary reward for the effort.
Our reward will be the ousting of the BLP
and the welcome change that will bring.
Under this BLP, Barbados is getting FAR too big for its boots.

  33. Maria

To the 2 DLP pimps – True Native and Anonymous (that should read Annoying)

Why change from the BLP, a Party which has passed legislation to ensure that history will NEVER repeat itself – NO Government be allowed to cut Civil Servants salary like what was done under the butcher Sandiford?

Under a Thompson administration all you will get as a salary is bus fair and lunch money.

  34. Maria

    To True Native and Anonymous,

Thompson is always at fetes so there is no mix up on my part with “bus fair” and “bus fare.”

He has no recollection of bus fare as he never had to catch public transportation.

My poor vocabulary and computer skills are as a result of the 23% umeployment figure achieved by the DLP between 1991/92.

Being rasied by a single mother, who was a civil servant with 4 children, whose already small salary was cut by 8% by then DLP government – Sandiford was the Prime Minister and David Thompson Minister of Finance, I was only able to attend school one week in every month.

Maybe if the DLP had any vision and had created a Division dedicated to youth development and poverty eradication as were both created by the BLP under the excellent leadership of Owen Arthur, I would not continue to expose my poor skills on this Dedicated Loosing Party’s blog.

Thanks to Mr. Roett (O Level Insitute and BLP’s MP for St. Michael Central) and through the Ministry of Social Transformation’s community computer programme I have acquired a number of CXCs and computer skills.

  35. Rumplestilskin

Above post ”We are indeed a STINK nation, and tourists notice this sorta thing, even if our National Pride blinds us, so we don’t!!”

Sadly true, a few years back friends from UK visited and they hated Bridgetown, said it was dirty etc….

I think the Government has tries to improve the physical looks of it and the coastal areas, but unfortunately the thing they missed is the deteriorating attitude and lack of a respectful view by the populace.

Such is deeply seated and derives from the examples that some in leadership positions show.

Care, compassion pride, respect are all passed on from person to person. Such are the bases of a sound and sustainable society. If there is no one to lead, if we all grab, grab, grab then there can be no real development.

After you and your parents voted out the DEMS in 1994

Owen Arthur from September 1994 to Present :

    *** Then VAT you 15 % ….!

*** Spend $ 80 million of you & your family tax dollars on Greenland……tens years on…nobody can send a bag of garbage there….!

*** Spend upwards to $ 300 million of you & your family tax dollars on the Warrens Building….with more money STILL being spent on a court case for the same…!

*** Spent upwards to $ 400 million on GEMS…..over 8 years now and no audited accounts about the GEMS project….!

*** Spent upwards to $ 100 million of St. Joseph Hospital enquiry and no disclosure on the contents of this report as yet after 12 years….!

For you to support such BLP TIEFFERY…..only shows you went to ROETT school…..for other…PURPOSES……!

    Maria,

don’t chop so wild your axe head will fall off.

I neither support the Blp of the Dlp, why? none of them if given the chance will ever make a better Barbados, why? they stand to gain much more from our suffering and misfortunes than anyone else.

However one cannot continue to flog the dead horse of the 8% cut, at least that was done in the open.

At present we have taken at least a 90% cut as our $100.00 now is really only worth $10.00 at the store or in doing business.

Many families suffer today and are unable to send their children to school including the middle class because families are just living pay cheque to pay cheque. barely able to keep your car on the road, pay your bills send to school the children and put food on the table, the least you might be able to do is cook some white rice with corn, can’t even buy meat.

Trust me the 8% cut was kinder than what we suffer right now.

There is no one with integrity, honesty, honour or respect or any goodness about them in the whole political landscape, but rather a filthy, dirty, corrupt, debase, dishonourable, shameful brood of vipers. Both DLP & BLP.

When you receive your back pay money please do not use all “behind”. Give some to your Shadow Minister on Economic Development, so that other people can benefit from the Student Revolving Fund.

Also, purchase a pair of shoes from the men’s section for “Ms. Jones” so that “shim” can stop wearing those tall heeled shoes when the sitting resume. Last and the more important request for “Ms. Jones”, a starter home!

Tell him to get Lowe to ask NHC for one.

    Wishing in Vain,
Open a fixed deposit account and put the difference from the salary increase received from the Owen Arthur government, so that when your Party (DLP gets in power, BLP are in office not power) you will have saved enough money to relocate with me to one of the other Caricom countries thanks to Owen Arthur’s vision for the free movement of people.

By the time the DLP becomes the government of the day, the calf will be dead, so there will be no fatted calf for you.

I don’t eat beef, plus the DLP calf has mad cow disease, hence why Thompson had to include the agriculture man James Paul in his camp.

  44. Rumplestilskin

I think Warrior has ‘voiced’ the general sentiments of many.

Sad that it has come to this, no?

Further, when he says ”Many families suffer today and are unable to send their children to school including the middle class because families are just living pay cheque to pay cheque. ”,

    its true.

And even if citizens are generally disgusted with politicians, because the current administration has ignored the calls for restraint on public expenditure while everyone is already suffering, because their has been no accountability of public funds, the current administration will feel the brunt of the voters anger at the next election.

Trust me on this, I heard another unsolicited comment yesterday from a layman when ‘out and about’.

People are not happy, ignore the polls which are NOT depicting the reality.

I am moving more and more towards expecting a shock election rather than a close one.

And those who keep harping on about DLP not capable, please shut it. It is annoying.

The reality that EVERY major project conducted in the last ten years has been a massive messup and overspend does not give any confidence in the current administration and so the constant harping that the DLP candidates cannot achieve is begging the question:

so what are these guys doing that the DLP cannot?

    overspend and screw-up?

As I said, I am independent as well. But I cannot sit idly by while waste and messups occur.

Dont call me or others malcontent, DLP-ites, whatever just ebcause we voice our opinions.

Such response only leads to the impression that dissention is clamped down on fiercely.

And what does that sound like?

    Autocratic. Some call it dictatorship.

  45. Jerome Hinds

    Rumplestilskin,

I agree with you. That strategy of trying to condemn the DLP is to make believe all Bajans are brainless.

The BLP has misappropiated our tax dollars to the extent that they no longer hold themselves accountable to us.

On what grounds can they ask for 5 more years with such scandulous behaviour ?

The Maria’s and other BLP poopers who visit this site know this as well…..but they have no shame to say differently…!

As for Maria, she believes as a woman UNDER Owen Arthur…a woman should pose like her up Garrison Hill….!

    Barbadians , especially our womenfolk…..deserves better….!

  46. Rumplestilskin

By the way, when personal insults come into the argument as Maria above uses, you know the writer has a real problem.

Stick to the issues, there is no need to insult. Name calling and insulting…now where do I recollect that coming from?

  47. Rumplestilskin

    Negrocrats…caucasian pig farmer….Malik wid teet…..need I go on?

When a campaign is run on insults it is very low indeed.

  48. De Orginal

Wait that is Royal rumble finally acknowledging his true self. He decide to call he self Maria . The difinition of idiot still applies.

  49. Rumplestilskin

”bigger picture but only concentrate on small issues. ”

Bigger picture? What is bigger than millions of dolllars being wasted on subsidising the profits of a cruise ship line (that is what it boils down to), while our people scrunt,

What is bigger than the administration being unable to provide detailed audited reporting for major projects including GEMS, over $300 million for that alone, allegedly (we can’t know can we…no reports),

What is bigger than a situation with a huge national debt, we are pushing ahead with major expenditures on non-foreign exchange earnings, non-productive capital projects i.e. flyovers, already gone above the ‘first’ figure of $120 million, to $140 million, probably to end up at $250 million, based on the usual overruns on every other project,

What is bigger than major expenditures on Greenland dump, that has had no resolution in 12 years, and gosh knows when the issue will be resolved, if ever?

What is bigger than the ONLY public hospital QEH not being given the attention and resources it needs to satisfactorily fulfill its requirement to provide timely and full functional service to Barbadians, despite substantial funds being wasted elsewhere?

    Get real.

As for political viewpoints, although far from perfect, Barrow and both Adams would be in deep disgust if they knew the current status of citizens cost of living, public projects and public expenditures.

    Nuff said.

  50. Wishing in vain

Maria there is little or no hope you your blindness to the real world is sickening when you accept the extent of the corruption and stealing that exist in this island now, the moral decay as seen in Mottley’s wicked ways **************** , Owing now presenting children conceived during his marriage to his wife and not just one child either more than that just from a moral angle they need censoring sharply. From the policial stand point the stealing that they are doing needs to be looked into and stopped.
That is why there is call to remove this gang of thieves from office to break up the system I will not stop in my call to see all three of these idiots loose their seats that is Mootley, Owing and MM Lynch.
