DLP connections protect crooked Barbados lawyer from arrest?

18 years after running off, cocky thief attorney returns to Barbados

Why was Michael Simmons so confident he wouldn’t be arrested?

Everybody knew that fugitive Michael Simmons (photo above) was coming to his sister’s funeral last weekend, and everybody was just as sure that he wouldn’t be arrested for the crimes that caused him to flee Barbados 18 years ago.

What’s changed in the 18 years since Simmons stole millions and ran off? That’s easy: some of Simmons’ family members are now close to the DLP Government.

Reader “Who me?” saw the article in The Nation Simmons back after 18 years and sent us the following contribution. BFP readers should remember that just because someone says something, doesn’t mean it’s all for true.

But there does seem to be a whole lotta smoke ’bout this place recently!

Justice? Rule of Law? For some but not for others.

by BFP reader “Who, me?”

The Nation article about Michael Simmons caught my eye in that I was made to understand that transparency and corruption and the relevant legislation were major concerns for Barbadians, having being promised this by the DLP government of the day.

Now, how can a situation exist where a lawyer, ATTORNEY-AT-LAW Michael Simmons having robbed his clients of their funds and absconded to the United States can return to Barbados as if he has not care in the world? Which in my estimation Mr. Michael Simmons doesn’t have a care in the world. Continue reading

Simplified procedure to complain about corrupt or inept Barbados lawyers.

President of Barbados Bar Association reveals changes

Finally, we have confirmation of the rumours from none other than BBA President Andrew Pilgrim.  A new simplified complaint procedure is to be introduced soon in an effort to deal with the current backlog where the average complaint takes over four years to process.

This “simplified and enhanced” procedure is far more efficient and less trouble for users. It does not require the filling out of so many forms as the initial record of complaint is made verbally.

This will be the new procedure…

  1. Write the lawyer’s name, law firm name, address and phone number on a piece of paper with the word “COMPLAINT” in large letters at the very top.
  2. Below the lawyer’s information, write your name, address and contact information.
  3. Place the paper into a suitable bottle.
  4. Shout the details of your complaint into the bottle.
  5. Seal the bottle securely and toss it into the sea off the South Coast.
  6. Await a response from the Barbados Bar Association.

Mr. Pilgrim states that the new procedure will be far less frustrating to Barbadians and others making complaints against lawyers because it will not take so much time to complain and the results will be exactly the same.

Initially the Barbados Bar Association yacht will be fishing the bottles from the sea on the South Coast only, but this will be expanded to the West Coast next year with the arrival of a second BBA yacht.

You can read all about Mr. Pilgrims promises in the Barbados Today article: Changes for Lawyers

Barbados lawyer Leroy Lynch arrested for $2.2 million theft

Is Barbados cleaning up the legal profession… finally?

We’ve had so many lawyers arrested in the last year and a bit that outsiders might begin to suspect that mass criminal hysteria has recently hit our legal profession. That observation would be wrong because the activity did not start recently – it’s been happening for a long time, but in the past it was always concealed.

The truth is that these kinds of arrests simply never happened until recently because the lawyers and judges looked after their own. Out and out thieves like (Insert names here, we don’t have time!) misappropriated clients’ trust funds and, if caught, at the most had to pay some money back without even a suspension let alone jail.

Arrests all for show? Deals still made?

Nevermind all the recent arrests though – I can’t think of any crooked lawyer who went to jail. Can you?

I guess it’s better than no charges at all, but I think this is the stage in our society where our glorious leaders have decided to make a show of arresting crooked lawyers – but then deals are made and the stories fade away.

Oh well, I suppose that is better than the way it used to be with no charges at all. Maybe someday we’ll read about a lawyer going away to Dodds for 2 years, but I’ve got a feeling that it won’t be Leroy Lynch. (photo above)

Hey! Is Leroy Lynch related to anyone else we know? Maybe this is a genetic problem!  :-)

Of course, I’m just throwing our readers a bit ‘o humour, cause everybody know that Mr. Leroy Lynch is innocent until proven GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!!!

:-)

Barbados Bar Association blames public for choosing crooked lawyers “at random”

President Leslie Haynes cautions public to avoid lawyers with “cash flow problems”, and to ignore recommendations of friends.

Barbados Bar Association website recommends lawyers who have been caught stealing from clients!

The President of the Barbados Bar Association vented at the public on Saturday while appearing at a seminar on conveyancing. When asked about the high number of lawyers lately charged with misappropriating clients’ money, Leslie “blame the victims” Haynes said that Barbadians “have to stop picking a lawyer at random or choosing one simply because a friend suggested a name.”

So it is the fault of the chickens for not knowing which mongoose will eat them. Or, more properly, the fault of honest Barbadians for not knowing which lawyers are dishonest.

The Barbados Bar Association does not provide a list of lawyers who have been disciplined or took money then paid it back when caught. Why not?

Shocker!

Astoundingly, BBA President Haynes also predicted that more Barbados lawyers will misappropriate their clients’ money because times are tough… Continue reading

Bar Association: Public having doubts about Barbados lawyers’ credibility. (No Kidding!)

barbados-lawyer-crook

Leslie Haynes QC, the President of the Barbados Bar Association, is whining in the Nation about how tough it is to be a lawyer these days when the public over-reacts to a few bad apples.

Our message for Mr. Hayes:

Everyone understands a few bad apples in any profession – it is the Bar Association’s long and sordid history of excusing thefts, covering up for the “old boys’ network” and failing to protect the interests of citizens that has the public concerned.

Oh for sure, the Bar Association has lately paraded a few crooked lawyers in public or before the courts, but that’s nothing compared to decades of the Disciplinary Committee going easy on their fellow lawyers and even welcoming them back with open arms after a few months “suspension” – while the lives of their victims are destroyed.

Let’s review a few stories and then open up the discussion, shall we?

Story 1: Barbados Bar Association Condones Theft From Clients – And Destroys The Reputation Of Honest Bajan Lawyers

“It has now been clearly established that the Barbados Bar Association does not consider it a big deal for a lawyer to steal $130,000 as long as the lawyer returns the money when caught. According to the Disciplinary Committee of the Barbados Bar Association, a simple reprimand is a suitable penalty.

No disbarment. No criminal charges. No Jail.”

Story 2: Disciplinary Committee of the Barbados Bar Association prove they are as incompetent as the lawyer appearing before them

“Attorney Balfour Layne and all the big-name lawyers of Disciplinary Committee of the Barbados Bar Association didn’t know the law – which is pretty pathetic by any standard…”

Story 3: Crooked Barbados Lawyers Being Charged With Theft Mostly By Foreigners: Bajan Global Report

“According to our friend at BGR, it is mostly foreign nationals who are taking crooked Bajan lawyers to court. Is this an indication that crooked Bajan lawyers target mostly foreigners – or that foreigners are more likely to be respected and protected by the police and courts than domestic victims?”

Story 4: Crooked Barbados Lawyers: Only One Arrested, Many Others Allowed To Walk Free… Why?

“Folks were recently surprised to read in the Nation News that a crooked Barbados lawyer had actually been criminally charged with stealing from clients. Usually the Barbados Bar Association does everything it can to “handle” such situations internally. By processing complaints of theft through the so-called disciplinary committee, the lawyers make sure that their own kind don’t get hurt too badly…”

Story 5: Barbados Court of Appeal says Thief Lawyer Mortimer Clarke OK to practice law.

“True to form, the old boys’ network reluctantly imposed only a nine-month suspension on a Barbados lawyer who was caught stealing $150,000 of client’s money from his “trust” account. Just to put this in perspective, anywhere in the civilized world a lawyer could expect a year or two in jail and permanent disbarment for similar activities. Not so in Barbados where the legal profession is apparently happy to accept Mortimer Clarke back into its welcoming arms after he has a little vacation. (”Pity you had a client complain, Morty old chap. We’ll have to make a show of it for a few months. Hope you understand.”)…”

Full Colour Photo Of Barbados Underground’s Race-Baiting Author “Black Woman Who Reads”

A Young Iain Deane Kneeling In Front Of Famous Actor Jeremy Brett

"I am an old black woman. I was head cook at Kingsland" - A Young Iain Deane Kneeling In Front Of Famous Actor Jeremy Brett

Barbados Underground’s Most Prolific Race-Baiting Author Is Really A Washed-up Old White Guy!

David at Barbados Underground has a problem. He surrendered his audience to “Black Woman Who Reads” and “her” supporters to allow the most vile of threats and racial attacks against people like Adrian Loveridge, the Knox family and others whose skin is not dark enough.

Now… the racists at Barbados Underground are faced with the embarrassment at the revelation that their racist attacks against whitey and Guyanese as led by BWWR were actually the work of a venomous old British white guy named Iain Deane who is a defendant in the Kingsland fraud trials. What a joke!

“Well, you know something, if it was not for old black women like me, wunnah would probably still be indentured. And because of my labour and sacrifice, I am not going to allow you to give our country away and bend the knee…” …old white guy Iain Deane as Barbados Underground’s prolific author “Black Woman Who Reads”

Mr. Deane had an agenda to support his side in a fraud trial so he created an “old black woman” persona and whipped up racial intolerance of the “whitish” old lady Madge Knox who is in the way of Mr. Deane’s ambitions. Deane called for black bajans to stalk the Knox family and other persons who are court witnesses against him in the Kingsland fraud trials.

David at Barbados Underground allowed and supported this racial venom whipped up by Iain Deane who claimed to be “Black Woman Who Reads” an old black cook at Kingsland finally taking sides against her white oppressors – the Knox family. The series of almost TWENTY major articles dominated Barbados Underground for almost a year and during that time blog owner David allowed Iain Deane and friends to rail on against whites, Guyanese and asians.

Here we are six days after the story about Iain Deane being “BWWR” broke at Keltruth Blog – but Barbados Underground has not said a word of explanation about the fact that their most prolific race-baiting author is really a washed-up old white guy who whipped up racial intolerance to suit his personal agenda.

What a joke!
