Felt it. A fair bit of shaking. I live in the St. Michael area. Felt like being on a boat in the water. Heard it was felt in T&T as well. Checked the USGS website and I read that a 7.3 quake hit near Martinique.

It was 167 miles NorthWest of us. And the depth of 145km was quite deep, good thing it was not closer to the surface, it would have created much more damage.
Maybe its a lesson. Particularly pertinent before the Xmas season which is so materialistic.
Friends and family. Nothing else matters.

Students traumatised, parents running/driving helter-skelter to locate children, cellphones out of service, shoes left behind in Bridgetown, buildings emptying of people in seconds, traffic jams, questions raised about how safe we really are and how prepared for disasters; there is a NEED FOR OUR SCHOOLS TO HAVE EMERGENCY DRILLS! What if this incident was during the middle of the school day. Do our schools and business places, along with private citizens, have emergency plans to respond to future situations like this?
The onus is now on every organization/business/school/church to have an emergency plan set up or reviewed. There must
also be drills organised, NOW! This must be seen as a wake up call to rouse us out our copmplacency. Yes, this could be a warning from God to us all, but we must now play our part by reaching out and helping each other to be prepared for any further activities of this sort …especially if it occurred during the night.
No politics involved …… disaster does not have any party affiliation!

I was in an office at Chaguaramas, Trinidad (v.near to Crews Inn) and felt nothing.
2 other ppl in the office felt a slight shaking, but me and another guy felt nothing at Chag.,strangely!
Returning to the PoS area, it seems to have been VERY much felt there!(to our surprise)-so we were in the right place at that time.

People will always react/panic to what they don’t understand, we were very lucky to have such a mild tremor here, though decidedly unpleasant, I was at work in a chattel house type shop and it swayed enough to get out quick! I’m sure the PM will make the most of a photo/TV opportunity!
Aren’t aftershocks usually lesser than the actual earthquake?
(a friend in Bridgetown said he thought they’d located the Digicel fugitive with all the people in the street.)

Happened to be in a school in St. Michael when the event occured, trust me. It was scary. Children screaming, parents scampering.
My first thoughts were, that I was feeling sick, then I realised no, the whole room is moving, then came the inevitable thought, OMG another cave in.
I looked up and started praying. But soon it stopped. 2007 is just getting worse and worse.

Having seen the news coverage of the house in St George which partially collapsed I have to admit to being quite shocked, I’d assumed from the radio that it was an old wooden house that had collapsed, but this was part of a ‘wall’ house collapsed into an opened ‘fissure’. I hope the Brittons Hill area and other cave areas are ‘checked’ after this tremor.

Hi guys,
I’d like to add my $0.02 in saying this afternoons’ experience was indeed new to bajans if not purely terrifying. Having lived in T&T and Martinique it was not a new one, but it is one of the most powerful i’ve felt.
I was 3 floors up and the whole building shook, there was the sound like footsteps on the roof , this is the best way i can describe it, then there the low rumble (very low) and the side to side movement. We were shown another side of our venerability and the powerful side of nature. For our sakes my hope is that the government seriously looks into amending any current building codes to include “earthquake” preparation.
I wondered also about insurance companies. What does this event mean for barbadians when seeking home insurance ? Given we never had any memorable experience with seismic activity, are there far-reaching changes needed in providing coverage for disasters of this magnitude. I believe many insurance execs. may have sleepless nights after todays incident.
On this our 41st anniversary of independence, we should be very grateful we can celebrate it even in the light of the current situation. Do enjoy your independence day Barbados.
