Should Barbados Boycott The China Olympics?

A letter from Barbados Free Press reader “D”…

Interesting to note that China which buys 2/3rds of its oil supply from Sudan is the only veto at the UN against sending UN troops to stop the bloodshed. Interesting opportunity for a small country like Barbados to show its integrity to the world by standing up to black on black human slaughter by refusing to send potential athletes to the Olympics in China next year. Unfortunately Barbados is already on the payroll and has sold its soul.

  • Do you have Multi-Choice TV???

If so check out CCTV. China trades with all— of the African countries not just Sudan out of a few. China is against the sanctions part of the UN agenda because it means they will lose all of their investment. It is no different than when the USA threatens to veto any UN declarations on Israel esp. over the West Bank, Gaza or Lebanon. Israel is all built up by US/British money so they’re against that.

There’s a special on right now on CCTV about the China-Africa summit that just took place.

For example: China is currently in the process of launching a series of satallites for African countries to build a new advanced telecommunications superhighway for the continent.

The equipment will be fully owned by the African countries. Thus far, it is believed that by having Nigeria own their own satellite, it will save the country of Nigeria alone a savings of about US$660 million annually in telephone charges that normally goes to the west.. Under the deal, it is a technology-transfer-deal with an agreement where the African countries are being trained with the know-how on how to launch their own future satellites.

In terms of the Olympics. Barbados can opt out if it wishes, if it rather feels that’s what is best. But I suggest you get other countries to do so too otherwise it just looks pitiful.

P.S. you should probably bring this up soon- with the Barbados Olympic Association [ http://www.olympic.org.bb/ ] because the Olympic are 08/08/08 (next year) and if they already purchased their tickets I’m willing to bet they’re not going to waste that money they’ll probably go.

That’s a shame, it was looking to be pretty spectacular event, you know how dem Asians do things they always wow de crowd during their presentations and thing.

  • Barbados might opt out on moral grounds, though I doubt it…I don’t know about making a statement as such; we are not an Olympics force.

  • Howdy All,

Bim won’t boycott the China Olympics. We, or better yet, our Government, is in bed with the Chinese. Like “D” said, Barbados is already on the payroll.
Remember the Gym and the new Government offices in Warrens (and who knows what else?) Why would Bim go and rock that boat and risk losing that assistance?

I may be straying off topic here, but in light of what’s happening between T&T and Bim, China and Bim, it is clear for everyone to see the sort of ‘connected’ world we now live in. We are now only an island in a physical sense. These sort of agreements and deals with foreign countries are now the norm and are expected if you as country (especially a developing one) want to survive in the new world order.

I, as a proud Barbadian, may grimace when I hear about what has happened to BS&T. But if we look at it in terms of the CSME, this sort of thing is inevitable.

The big picture says that as individual islands, we are vulenerable. The other bigger countries (developed/undeveloped) pay no attention to us, we may not even be a footnote on their agendas.

However, united as a group, we stand a better chance at surviving out there. The problem is, what is each individual island willing to give up in order to survive as a combined group of islands?

    Yours,
    The Bystander.

Bystander you are so right…. As soon as you said de Wildey Gym. Warrens I forgot about but right after I remembered Independence Square was redone by that Barbados-based Chinese construction company.
