Barbados Tourism Minister Flees Radio Talk Show Over Question Of Personal Assets And Integrity Legislation

Privileged Prince Of Government Runs Out Of Studio

Was He Embarrassed Because He Is Guilty… or Outraged Because He Is An Unaccountable Elite?

Thousands of listeners of the Down To Brass Tacks radio show were stunned yesterday as Barbados Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch ran out of the studio after being asked on air to comment about his personal wealth and Integrity Legislation. The emailed question from a listener and comments by moderator David Ellis abruptly ended the Minister’s participation as he angrily ripped off his headphones, stood up and left the studio.

Spoilt Brat Minister Lynch Refused To Sit In Same Room With Hotelier Adrian Loveridge

Barbadians had been eagerly anticipating the show after Barbados Free Press announced last week that the StarCom Radio Network had caved to demands from Minister Lynch that hotel owner and tourism pundit Adrian Loveridge be excluded from the popular Sunday radio show. After BFP’s revelation, an embarrassed broadcaster and Minister Lynch ended up including Mr. Loveridge for part of the show, but Mr. Loveridge was forced to sit in a separate studio when Minister Lynch refused to be in the same room with Mr. Loveridge. (See BFP’s Barbados Minister Of Tourism Dictates To Cowardly StarCom Network…“)

Howls Of Laughter From Grape Hall To Bridgetown

Throughout the broadcast, Mr. Loveridge was calm, polite and respectful to Minister Lynch even while launching factual broadside after broadside and asking many relevant questions that were ignored or twisted by the Minister. In contrast, the Tourism Minister came across both as an abusive bully and a spoiled petulant child. He was often flustered and lost for words when asked simple questions on subjects that he didn’t want to speak about, and was caught telling so many “big ones” that howls of laughter could be heard throughout Grape Hall where this writer listened to the radio.

Minister Lynch’s mendacity on the Cricket World Cup cruise ship fiasco and his inability to answer even simple questions on the GEMS Hotels scandal left the radio audience wondering if their Minister of Tourism is capable of even the basics of running any ministry, let alone a ministry that is so important to our economy.

Readers of Barbados Free Press posted comments about the show while it was in progress and like everyone were shocked at the Minister’s frightened retreat from the studio. Comments streamed in from Barbados and around the world as thousands of Bajans living overseas regularly enjoy Brasstacks via the internet.

Integrity Legislation From This Government? You Gotta Be Kidding!

But it was when Minister Lynch stormed from the studio over his personal wealth and integrity legislation that drove listeners wild… that and the Minister invoking the race card by making statements to the effect that he was only being asked to account for his wealth because he is black.

Barbados Free Press can assure Minister Lynch that your fellow black citizens who form 95% of the population aren’t asking you about your millions because you are black. We are asking because we want to know how it is that a man who has done nothing but hold appointed and elected government positions could have your wealth. Simple question Mr. Minister – but apparently one that is very difficult for you and your peers.

Comments From BFP Readers After Minister Lynch Ran Out Of The Studio…

“David Ellis ask a hot one… Now Lynch gone!! Walked out!! WOW!!”

“… so what happens when as an MP he gets to speak on integrity legislation?”

“See, if we had the integrity legislation, there would be no issue with the assets of the Minister, but without the legislation we are forced to asked difficult questions about the minister’s wealth.”

“Did they end the show because the Minister walked off like a spoilt little boy? What a loser he is!!”

“Congratulations Mr. Ellis for standing your ground and particularly for raising Integrity Legislation. Unfortunately just the mention of Integrity Legislation seems to have chased Minister Lynch out of the studio. This in itself speaks volumes.”

It is now left to be seen how many Ministers of Government will play the race card and run from the mention of Integrity Legislation the way Mr. Lynch has today.

This was a stunning conclusion to the show.

David Ellis shocked me with that question. Brasstacks ratings will be up next week. Once again the black vs white thing raises its ugly head as the Minister is forced to use it in defence of his character as he was sucker punched by Ellis.

You see what happens when these ministers are not given the ‘lollipop questions’ they are used to?

If you can’t take the heat, then stay out of the kitchen.

It was clear that lynch was getting cockier and cockier by the minute, not expecting to get that ‘ellis beamer’. Boy he could not even duck, weave – nothing – the ball hit him straight in the box – and then he do an owen – he started sweating and run to hell outa de place.

We need Integrity Legislation NOW!

(1) We have a PM admitting to receiving cheques made out to him personally and depositing them in his personal bank account.

(2) We have a Minister hastily leaving a radio studio at the mention of Integrity Legislation when he is asked about his sudden windfall of assets.

So ‘moutta Barney’ ran! Who the hell this political clown thinks he is? He wants to hold public office but does not wish to be accountable. It is time for him to go. The people of St Michael South must give him his marching orders. He can then go back to Puerto Rico or wherever else he went to after leaving Lodge. When you hold public office in a democracy, your financial dealings become an open book. The email question was quite legitimate and relevant. There are lots of rumours about this minister and the public has a right to know. Again, the Barbados Labour Party has shown through one of its representatives that it is unfit to continue as the government of Barbados. Owen Arthur should do the right thing and call elections as soon as World Cup is out of the way. He declared election season open last year. What is he running from now? Is it that he sees defeat staring him in the face?

  2. concerned

Mr. Lynch has no right running in any election. He should resign or be fired right NOW!

  3. No - Name

    I agree, FIRE HIM NOW!

    WALKOUT!
    Published on: 3/26/07.

AN ANGRY Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch abruptly pulled the plug during a live radio broadcast yesterday after a question was raised about his alleged rise from being a “virtual beggar” to millionaire status in recent years.

Lynch told Starcom Network’s Sunday Brasstacks talk-show host David Ellis, who was putting the issue of the minister’s reported wealth accumulation after receiving an emailed query in the studio, that the question was “as disrespectful as you can get”.

He said he was “abhorred” that Ellis would raise such an issue in a public forum.

He dismissed any suggestions of questionable conduct, declaring: “I am an honest person.”

He also said he regarded the question as “an insult to my legacy”, himself and his family.

Lynch told Ellis: “I will not allow anyone to pull me down.”

He linked the framing of the emailed question to criticisms by people who were against the idea of people like Owen Arthur being Prime Minister and Clyde Mascoll being a key political figure because of their social backgrounds.

The minister dismissed efforts by Ellis to get him to respond to the question. “I am not engaging in that,” he told Ellis.

The walkout came after some heated exchanges between Lynch and outspoken hotelier Adrian Loveridge, whom Ellis had kept in separate studios of the radio station.

In the two-hour programme focusing on the impact of Cricket World Cup (CWC) on tourism, Lynch responded to hoteliers’ complaints of bookings that were lower than expected.

    Hardest hit

He conceded that generally figures were down three to four per cent at this time of the year, with luxury class bookings hardest hit (in the region of ten per cent).

However, he advised the key players in the industry not to panic. Barbados still stood to benefit “substantially” from CWC in the short and long term, with the island likely to end up better off than some of its neighbours, he said.

Lynch estimated that as many as 90 000 visitors could be in Barbados for the CWC final, including cricket fans and tourists, but Loveridge called the figures “ridiculous” for a country with 10 000 long-stay visitors per week.

Lynch agreed with hoteliers that the timing of CWC was not perfect, but said that “ultimately we have got to make [CWC] work for us”.

Loveridge, however, charged that the island was facing “a disastrous four to five weeks” leading up to the Barbados matches. (TY)

    Bajan New Yorker

Thank you for that excerpt – was it found in the on – line edition?

  6. Adrian Loveridge

I was frankly quite shocked of how out-of-touch the Minister of Tourism appeared to be and wonder how he could formulate policies based on the information he seemingly believes.

    Lets just recap:

    1) 90,000 visitors for the week of the cricket final?

    2) 75,000 passengers on cruise ships (or put another way 28 Carnival Destiny’s absolutely full)?

    3) ‘only 500 villa rooms’.
In fact there are more rentable villa rooms available in Barbados than luxury hotel rooms. FACT.

    4) And several attempts to discredit MY figures when they were actually issued either by HIS Ministry of Tourism, Caribbean Tourism Organisation, Barbados Statistical Service of BTA.

    5) Denial that any loan has been arranged to charter the Carnival Destiny when it is even posted of the GIS website.

    6) Not aware of the financial state of Hotels and Resorts Ltd, the 30 derelict Blue Horizon rooms or the $37 million unpaid interest?

To have someone like this heading our number one industry is quite frightening!

  7. Wishing in Vain

In a nutshell this man is wicked dishonest bastard along with most of the others that I have no doubt about end of story.
How could Lynch really sit in front of big people and lie so blatanly the most sickening aspect is when asked numerous times if the Gov’t has borrowed money for the charter of the Carnival Destiny he lies thru his teeth and denies doing so and now today Adriand produces a Gov’t information document which clearly states that they have borrowed money to exactly this, if he is far removed from his ministry he ought to be put out of his misery and be fired instantly.
The question of his wealth is a fair and reasonable one when one considers that he is empolyed by us the taxpayers of Barbados.

  8. Wishing in Vain

To all I would say that this is moment that we all need to recall and store in our memories as this discussion was at the heart of the freedoms of this island and it gave good insight as to the way the Gov’t is prepared to operate to maintain control of the gov’t and you the people of this island.
This is abuse of power from on high with no regard for anything or anyone lower down the pecking order very scary this is trust me.

  9. Adrian Loveridge

BFP readers that missed the programme can read an article by Barbadian journalist Dawne Bennett on

  10. justice

He represents the worst that there is in Barbados public service. How much longer do we have to put up with his crass stupidity?

  11. Hants

This incident yesterday should be a lesson to all of us. Pause and think before you speak.

Worst of all the Minister appeared not to have treated the program seriously.

He could not have been faulted if he said that their
    projections were too optimistic.
He could have put credible numbers on the Table and used this time positively.
He could have explained the $15million issue in a coherent manner.

Minister Lynch had a glorious opportunity yesterday and he blew it.

David Ellis asked a provocative question but it was up to the Minister to answer it appropriately.
He chose to walk out leaving the public to continue to speculate about his assets.

  12. paul sealy

It’s like this folk’s…all these kachars want is wealth and plenty of it at taxpayer’s expense, asking any questions why they have more money than their monthly salaries shows them to have will make them sweat profusely

I commend David Ellis for having balls, all we need is for Thompy to get cracking and hopefully these white collar criminals will have a new home to reside once investigations are proven to be thorough …all who are innocent have nothing to worry about..but once yah dip yah hand where it ain’t suppose to be(taxpayers money)yah should get grind…ALL OF THEM THAT THIEF

  13. Jerome Hinds

The day after…………………..David Ellis back in the seat….!!

    Listen to it folks…..!

Jelly-belly David Ellis just apologised to Lynch on Brasstacks

  18. BK

    D.Ellis apologizes!

    I might have predicted it : – )

  19. Jerome Hinds

    Hi folks,

It is his job on the line !

    Not his GUTS !

Now I hooked on Brass Tacks…………

  21. Wishing in Vain

This is sickening Ellis is wavering he must have been spoken to by Vic or Owing.

  22. Chase

He apologised for hurting Lynch’s feelings…….but nor for asking the question.

Give the man a break. One out of two aint so bad :-)

  23. John

    Chase

You would have to be a Bajan, born and bred!!

  24. Pogo

Ellis made to apologize? That’s shooting the messenger. But you can’t shoot all of us. We want answers.

    Dear government ministers:

What is your salary as elected official?

How much has your family’s personal wealth increased since you were elected?

We can figure the rest out.

Everybody: Send Owen A a message that if Ellis gets fired for this there will be a national strike because by now we are disgusted. Bajans just want straight answers not tantrums.

  25. Michele

Can it be that the people of Barbados are still slaves?

I don’t know alot about much, but from where I am Bajans don’t seem to be free to express themselves.

If the people are not happy with the PM and his lack of respect and and outright abuse of power, why not make enough noise so the rest of the world can hear?

I’m not there so I only know what I read here and what I’ve seen so far is enough for me to think that these people need to feel the force of justice.

  26. True Native

Oh God, my worst fears – Owing and Vic got Ellis apologising. How sickening.

  27. Chase

    John

Yes I am ……is that a bad thing?

  28. Sick and fed up Sylvan

Shame! Why should David Ellis feel that he should apologize to Barney Lynch? Has Ellis forgotten his role as a leading journalist in this country? The role of the media is make public officials accountable. His question yesterday was perfectly in order. When journalists cave in to politicians, they give politicians reason to treat them like dirt and that has happened to journalists under this BLP regime. Stand up and be counted. You can be a journalist for as long as you choose. People like Barney hold power at the pleasure of the people. When it is taken away and they again become nobodies, they will come down from cloud 9 where they are right now

  29. Sick and fed up Sylvan

Perhaps, the BFP crew should ask VOB to play the song of the day and dedicate it to Barney. The song is: I want a plantation …. I want it at any cost….” John King sings it

Oweing phones Vic, and chews out his ear (and damned near loses the license for DirecTV) and Vic promises he’ll “have a word” with Young Ellis, – who gets a phone call from Vic chewing him out!

Ellis will go home and ‘pass the buck’ to the wife,
who’ll berate the poor kids for some misdemeanour.
Welcome to Barbados, that attractive can of worms.

    Big Chief-1: VoB-0

    Ne-e-ext?!

  31. james

Ellis should never, ever have apologised, but then it’s probably his job on the line so give the man a break. Just highlights the pressure that they’re put under and why the traditional media is in such a sorry state. And while we’re at it, Lynch needs to go, yesterday if at all possible, but I’m not convinced by the DLP at all either – alot of talk and very, very low on credibility. What’s a man to do ? Vote PEP ? I think not. Emigrate ? Too cold. Run for office ? Hmmm – rewarding by all accounts. I want me own Plantation house too…

  32. John

    Chase

Me too …. and it is a wonderful thing!!

  33. Hello…hello! Vic Fernandes, anyone at home? If after 10 odd years you have not gotten your TV Licence, do you still think Owing will give you now after the events of Sunday’s “Brasstacks”? You mandated Mr. Ellis to aplogise for the e-mail directed to Lynch, however that will still not get you your licence because it [the apology] was not sincere. Wake up and smell the coffee Vic. VOB is perceived as a D media outlet. My advice is to pull out the stops and outwardly show where your heart is. Don’t be another Daily Sun. At least your journalist practitioners will not have to eat crow!

  34. Sick and fed up Sylvan

Can you believe it? Starcom just issued a formal apology to Barney Lynch. What the hell is happening to democracy and free speech in Barbados? Are we now a dictatorship and dont even know it? Shame on Starcom. We at BFP represent a section of the wider court of public opinion. Barney Lynch is on trial here and the case is not going his way. The verdict will soon be delivered.

  35. Wishing in Vain

VOB has now apologised as well, what a sick place we live in I can see Owing’s and Lynch’s hand in this situation, why are they to apologise for what they have done this is rubbish were is the press freedom in this island? there is none we are at the mercy of the ruling party and Owing.

  36. John

Star Com dissascociated itself from the contents of the email that was read and apologised to the minister for any distress it caused he or his family.

Sounded kind of legalese to me.

  37. John

A lady on the program is complaining about the number of rats and monkeys destroying everything. Wants the ministry of agriculture to do something.

When she goes to them they stand up to her and they are almost as tall as her, she is 5′ 4″

We really need this integrity legislation bad.

Ah well, even the MLP has its flaws.

  38. Warrior

Foot-in-mouth disease takes over once again. Isn’t it about time someone gave him a shot similarly to the flu shot to aide him in getting rid of this disease.

Oh wait the question about his home and integrity legislation cured in instantly as he was able to go from mouth to floor in seconds.

Mr. Minister I am beginning to feel for you, but your arrogance is your downfall. Pride really does come before a fall

  39. Patrick Porter

    John

It seems to me that every one is scared of doing or saying anything against the Arthur Administration. So we have a state of dictatorship in Barbados. The BLP can say and do anything and no one can question them. Watch for the Gestapo shortly. I bet they have spies in every possible place
Nazi Germany is about to be recreated in Barbados under a different name. My heart goes out to all those living under these conditions and I suggest that you all leave Barbados and come to Canada. I have a friend who is scared to post anything on this web site as they might track her, so that is the state of affairs

  40. True Native

They’re all on a roller coaster on the way DOWN, DOWN, DOWN. Sir Henry Forde jumped aboard on Brass Tacks to try and save them, as did De Original Drug Baron earlier. But they’re too far gone now.

  41. Allan

Do not be too hard on David Ellis for having apologised to the Minister. Under the outdated Libel laws of this Country the truth is no defence. so even if the Minister is guilty one cannot speak of his misgivings nor broadcast the email David received. I understand why he would it, perhaps I would have too, but in doing so he may have put both himself and VOB at risk . This apology is just a part of the damage control by the station.

  42. Royalrumble

Well congrats to Minister Lynch. I think he handled himself brilliantly on Brass Tacks on Sunday. He made loveridge out to be the liar and empty vessel that he truly is.

loveridge could have done without going to the studio. It was a case of him showing up how weak he really is and how out of touch he is on the tourism industry. He was a total let down.

I have just heard on Brass Tacks that StarCom has apologize to the Minister and has vehemently disassociated themselves with actions of Ellis and the comments made in an anonomous email. At least somebody at StarCom is prepared to save this idiot Ellis from himself and save StarCom from a lawsuit.

It is my firm view that had Ellis been working for a serious radio station, he would have been fired. But he is working for company that is part of a group that has set out their political objectives and they are working towards that goal. That objective is to get the rid of this Government at any cost.

To understand why Ellis read that email, which was very out of place and irrelevant to the matter being discussed, one must understand what his role on the programme is all about. It is my view that Ellis has undertaken the task of the HIT-MAN for the DLP on the programme – a role that he does not handle very well. Such roles are normally carried out by persons with some degree of intelligence.

How many Barbadians remember the occasion when Ellis read out a letter on Brass Tacks which painted the negative impression on our Royal Barbados Police Force? StarCom had to apologize for that. Now there is this email. When and where will Ellis stop?

Can it be that Ellis is guilty of the very thing for which he accuses others? Having made the error with the Police letter would’nt he have been more careful? How could he in less than a year return to make the same error on the same radio station? Could it be that Ellis is being paid to tarnish the reputation of certain public officials?

Would it be unreasonable to ask whether or not he (Ellis) is satisfied that having made the public annoucement, the libelous information would have already been put in the public domain and therefore all he would have to do is to apologise as he has done today?

Is Ellis collecting a fee for this nasty underhand work he is presumably doing for the DLP/StarCom and does this not raise questions about his integrity?

    -

  48. Listening to the follow-up program this morning I got a good laugh when a lady caller said that Owen Arther, our Honourable Prime Minister, had said that there was not need for Integrity Legislation as all Barbados politicians were known to be honest!

Did O$A really say “There is no need for Integrity Legislation as all Barbados politicians are know to be honest”?

    Where and when?

  49. Peltdown Man

Royalrumble has to be kidding! He is kidding, right? I mean he HAS to be kidding. Please reassure me that he’s kidding.

  50. Congratulations and continued high regard for Adrian Loveridge’s spirited yet controlled submissions to the Hon (?) Minister for Tourism.

It was embarassing to hear Lynch fluster and bluster about “Not having those facts at hand”, and “You produce statistics that you alone have”.

One must assume the Prime Minister did not miss the show, and must realise what an incompetent his minister of our key industry really is.

  51. De Orginal

Royal Rumble a man of no integrity just like his political masters have sought once again to put the spin on the situation. The bloggers have been calling on you for quite sometime with questions you went into hiding now sudden after David Ellis is forced to apologise for asking about integrity legislation. Yard fowl you appear talking bare ………… I hope and pray everyday my country will clean up its act and we can have accountability, integrity and transparency especially when it comes to having to account for the people’s money. I thought Noel Lynch should have apologised to the country for the arrogant way he behaved. The Prime Minister should have sacked him. Yet he still walking around bullying people this must stop. The people of Barbados must speak out and let our elected officials know they are accountable to the people.

  52. BK

If I read between the lines this morning i.e. the tenor of D.Ellis moderating I suspect that Vic had to write a check. If I had to advise D.Ellis as I said before I would certainly have had him do it differently. The fact is that until there is integrity legislation the politician has a right to privacy and any allegation must be supported by evidence.

  53. Jupiter

    Fellow Bloggers

Have you noticed that Royalrumble can always tell us about persons getting paid for doing yardfowl wuk? e.g. he said previously that the DLP pays 12 callers to call the call in programme, today he says that david ellis is being paid to do the dirty work for the Dlp.

Have you ever wondered friends how royalrumble knows so much about being paid for being a yardfowl – maybe that is his area of expertise – ie being a yardfowl.

Have you also noticed folks that royal rumble did a David Copperfield (the magician) ? – he disappeared completely off the radar screen as soon as arthur got pummeled by Thompson in the house, and then Barney lynch got knocked out by that bouncer from David Ellis?

Have you worked out as yet the modus operandi of the BLP ‘hatchet men’ – who called the journalists and terrorise them?

Didn’t David Ellis say today he had a lot of calls after the programme and even lionel craig of “douglas leopold phillips people got to starve fame” – he confirmed today that he called david after the programme and complained about the integrity question.

Even in todays Advocate newspaper,Nicholas Cox – who seem to be a decent young man with a conscience and trying to do the right thing – wrote about the trials and stresses of the job as a journalist where politicians call you and cuss you out or call your boss and threaten you.

He even gave a favourable mention to BFP.

Yet owen $ arthur trying to tell us that we are heading for 1st world nation status.

Who mekkin sport wid who eh people?

  54. PeterPan

I tell y’all dat when I grow up I want to be a BLP!

    The BLP ” fatcats ” ain’t easy…..!!

Only they must tief without being questioned….!!!

  56. Cat Skinner

    Folks,

    Skin This Cat!

I counted at least five SIGNIFICANT misrepresentations by the Tourism Minister on Sunday all of which can easily be rebutted/proven with some serious journalism or aggressive political manoeuvreing.

The BLP has gotten its apology! The people want their RESIGNATION!

    STAND UP DLP!

  57. Cat Skinner

By DLP I mean Mr. Thompson and Company!

  58. Adrian Loveridge

    RoyalRumble..

I actually managed to tape the entire programme and will use parts of it post CWC to see exactly how accurate the 90,000 visitors during the cricket final week and 75,000 cruise ship passengers. By the way that is 28 absolutely Carnival Destiny’s, just think about it for a minute!

The following is a verbatem response by the Minister of Tourism when David Ellis asked him about the US$15 million subsidy to Carnival Corporation.
‘First of all, David, the Government of Barbados has not borrowed any $15 million and has not gone to anyone to borow $15 million.
I say that categorically, that is incorrect. The Government has never borrowed any money from any bank’.

RoyalRumbe, then go the the Government Information website 20th November 2006.

‘Prime Minister Owen Arthur will move the passing of a Resolution to approve the guarantee by Government for repayment by the BTA of the principal and interest in respect of a US$14,772,000 loan from the Bank of Nova Scotia.
The BTA is BORROWING the money to lease the cruise liner, Carnival Destiny to provide additional accommodation that will supplement Barbados’ room requirements during ICC Cricket Cup 2007 matches here’.

Now RoyalRumble, just who is the liar

    1) Owen Arthur
    2) Government Information Service
    3) Minister Lynch

    or Adrian Loveridge?

  59. Let us all take the integrity legislation to the vote.
    The peoples poll.
Can we get one of the newspapers, or both to do a poll.
Can Wickham do a meaningfull poll for the people?
Or are they too chicken to get it done.
We do not have to wait on the DLP to include it in there mainifesto – if they did I would vote!!!!

  60. Straight talk

    Bajans. We have already lost.
We have a minister spouting unsupportable statistics, and a hotel industry man valiantly trying to pin him down to any one of them, and rather than answer a logical question, the “Right Honourable” Noel Lynch, a representative of the people, storms out of a public forum claiming abuse…and perhaps financial costs for slander.
Any awkward question relevant to his portfolio he claims total ignorance of the true figures.
Probably because there aren’t any published, absolutely contrary to our law.
    The man is the minister.
He is responsible to Barbados for this HT&L operation.
His ignorance of their financial performance is an indictment of his competency.
We are speaking of millions of Bajan taxpayer’s money, and the minister responsible admits he doesn’t know the true situation.
If he doesn’t know , does anyone ? and if he doesn’t, why not?
That is the job we are paying him for.
Much as I love animals, shampoo et al let us all get real and not let this blatant admission of incompetency by our elected officials dwindle

  61. Straight talk

Apologies for non – completion, I got interrupted.

  62. Mumsez..

    Politicians are like diapers.

They should both be changed frequently
    - and for the same reason.

  63. Get In The Action

I think there should also be strong advocacy to amend the draconian libel laws in Barbados. Obviously David Ellis has felt the harsh reality of this, like a bad hangover the morning after. Too often this threat is being used to hammer journalists into submission.

I fear the change of course that’s happening in Barbados – not the positive freedom of expression on this site, but the fear of expression in the traditional media. When we allow journalists and commentators to be muzzled we slip further down that slippery slope to dictatorial anarchy.

  64. Out Dey In Bim

Who couldn’t help feeling sorry for david ellis this morning – being put in a position of being hounded by the blp party operatives, while he tries to maintain his professional mantle as a journalist.

Being forced to aplogise even though as he says he believe in the rightness of the question – re transparency and accountability.

  65. Get In The Action

And to add insult to all of us he’s then praised by Lionel Craig and other party hacks on today’s show for being “such a big man” to apologize. This island’s best journalist was treated like a boy in the yard.

  66. All I can tell wunnuh is that the truth is on my side. Barbados for all it’s vaunted structural development will remain an intellectually backward country as long as politicians and their yardfowls continue to get their dishonest ways, by intimidation, corruption, pensions and placements. The whole lot makes me want to puke.

  67. But can anyone say exactly what was in the letter that David read? Because i believe that the contents of the Libel and defamation acts do not necessarily support the reputation they continue to carry. These acts remind me of the reputation the masonic lodge still carries today, the truth is so far removed.

” Well congrats to Minister Lynch. I think he handled himself brilliantly on Brass Tacks on Sunday. ”

    —————————————————————–

The words and actions of BLP operatives like those of the IMBECILE above are precisely the THREAT our Democracy faces….

    For here is it that:

    1. Minister Lynch CATERGORICALLY denies in public domain that the BLP government paid no MONEY for the services of Carnival Destiny….!!

The TRUTH…..the Government of Barbados secured a US $ 14.7 million loan from Scotia Bank for the same….!! The bill was even debated in the House of Assembly…!!!

    2. Minister Lynch DISCLOSES that 10 cruise ships would be in port during CWC 2007 – and each ship carries on average 2,600 passengers – yet he STATED that about 75,000 pasengers would be accomodated on the SAME cruise ships…!!

The TRUTH……10 cruise ships likely to have approximately 28,000 guests in TOTAL….!!!

    3. Minister Lynch has been Tourism Minister for the past SEVEN years…..comes to BRASSTACKS programme and DECLARES….he did not know the issue of GEMS would come up…..!!!

The TRUTH….this same Minister has presided over the GEMS issue without one IOTA of AUDITED accounts being submitted by AUDITORS……despite public outcry of such INCOMPETENCE…!!

Then to DEMONSTRATE their INDIFFERENCE to Barbadians an IMBECILE like Royalrumble a.k.a Judas comes to this BFP site and PRAISE the Minister of TOURISM for telling Bajans…a whole BUNCH of lies….!!!

And we the CITIZENS of this fair land are to put up with this by being….SILENCED….!!!

  69. Out Dey In Bim

I get the sense that VOB’s lawyers are on the take for the BLP or are doing them a disservice.

How is it that VOB never challenges these legal suits?

I have been reliably informed that owen has collected some good change from them, and so has other members of his cabinet.

It tells you a lot about this sick bunch in government that they will try to fleece a radio station that is only trying to provide a platform for the citizens to air their concerns, yet at the same time these people talk a storm about how democratic they are.

How can a minister’s reputation be hurt when a question is asked about his assets when he has been known to boast and flaunt his newfound wealth?

Last I heard his WIFE (if she is still that) had a average paying job since she left CBC a few years ago so where did this contribution from his family come from?

I think david ellis question and that up coming money laundering piece from BFP has probably shaken a lot of the BLP’s crooks in government and who knows if there wasn’t a BFP,maybe ellis wouldn’t have had the courage to ask that question.

That’s what journalism is about peter thorne, albert brandford and others – doing the right thing when it counts.

  70. Out Dey In Bim

Thinking about it,this blp party has a long history of doing just what they did to VOB,remember clennell wickham and his paper and what grantley adams did?

Also Wynter Crawford had a similar experience fron the same grantley adams founder of this barbados labour party.

Don’t forget it was tom adam who practised the art of intimidation upon the barbadian citizenry.

This is what is visited upon this nation whenever the BLP is in power.

  71. Jerome Hinds

It is obvious in the heat of the moment…Lynch forgot the deal below which he brokered with Owen….!!!

This may explain his new found wealth….!!!

    —————————————————————-

    A wise old Lady !

There was a Minister of Tourism whose salary was small so he went before Owen Arthur and asked for a raise.

After much discussion, Owen passed a rule that whenever this Minister of Tourism completed a new “project “, his paycheck would increase also.

After 6 ” projects “, this deal started to get VERY expensive and Owen decided to hold another meeting to discuss the Minister of Tourism salary.

There was much yelling and bickering about how much the Minister of Tourism additional
” projects ” were costing the treasury.

Finally, Owen got up and spoke to the citizens of Barbados, ” Tourism is vital to our country’s development, ” he said.

After hearing the Minister of Tourism on the Sunday Brasstacks show , a little old lady called the programme and in her frail voice said,
” Honesty and Integrity are also vital to our country’s development ”

And every Barbadian who heard her voice…shouted..Amen..!!

  72. Javon Griffith

What a load of rubbish. Noel Lynch has had the most difficult job as a Minister of Tourism. SARS, 9/11, bird flu etc. But do you people care? No.

    Mr. Loveridge

I can assure you, that when the BLP wins the imminent election, Mr. Lynch will continue to be Minister. I can also assure you that the constituents of St. Michael South would never put that hamster F.S. as their parliamentary representative.

You do not own Barbados, or it’s tourism industry. That is why you are in the position you are in.

  73. littleboy

I believe that the time has come to repeal the old libel laws. They’re outdated.
But ,libels or not, Lynch showed guilt by his reaction. He owes Bajans an explanation re his wealth….so too do Owen (condo in Port St Charles,Beverley’s $2m dollar house…)Rommel ($800 thousand house wth pool added…apartments under construction at Sandy Lane…).
    Need I say more???
Anyone doubtful about BLP thiefing could challenge me and more revelations will come
By the way, what about the $50,000.00 monthly “retainer” donated to the St Peter Development Fund????

  74. Jerome Hinds

  76. John

I am beginning to think that VOB and David Ellis may have pulled a fast one on the minister and may very well have struck a blow for press freedom.

David Ellis did not have to read the email. In fact, after years of experience he would know what was what where such an action was concerned.

One lady caller pointed out that if someone had phoned in and said the exact same thing, that person would have been cut.

But the email was read!!! As Adrian says, who knows what was really in the email!!

Here is the beauty of the result of the swarming bees trying to get an apology.

    It is in the open!!!!!

Everyone can judge for themselves, accurately or inaccurately, what went on.

Who called whom, what was said, how many hours were spent meeting and twisting arms, how much money was extracted …….. all these are questions the public will answer on their own, and they will.

Maybe the apology is just what the doctor ordered. Without realising it, the powers that be may have done us a tremendous favour by walking down the path they have always walked with no challenge.

They were forced to act in the open when we were watching.

Time will tell how this matter pans out. It may be just another 9 day wonder, then again ……. it might not.

The appearance on the scene of Sir Henry is a signal event!!!

The bees are swarming, they have been smoked out!! …. and the smoke may have been the email.

Man, I love this internet thing!!

I would laugh if it turned out that the libel laws were written in such a way that they did not recognise that an email could qualify, …. almost as good as when the law went to prosecute a former Miss Barbados for exposing her person only to discover that by definition, she, as did all women in Barbados, did not have one.

  77. Yardbroom

Amidst all this hype and side shows, keep your eyes on the ball, it is late in the evening and the shadows have started to lengthen, but tomorrow will bring the rays of sunshine of the new dawn, it is for us to see the channels of light in this darkness.

We find it difficult to understand erratic behaviour from those who have been elected to lead us, this occurs when they are rattled and under pressure, despite the veneer of normality, they fear the impending doom of their situation.

Do not fall into traps, we must be concious of the dark shadows that lurk in Barbados politics, people who wield great power recite the old mantra

” if you want a place in the aviary you have to churp the right tune”

and this strikes fear in some, whose livelihood is at stake, do not be too hard on those who are in a position to ask questions on behalf of ordinary folk, they carry a heavy burden.

    Think carefully, and be wise…..

  78. John

    Yardbroom

I agree, there is always a dawn.

We just have to remember that during the night when things are blackest and keep the faith.

After I wrote the last sentence I thought for a moment on my use of the word blackest. Colour has constantly been used to divide us and my thoughts were about being politically correct.

What also made me pause was your reference to dark shadows. Usually, I see people use the term white shadows when the attempt at division is being setup. Remember Don Blackman?

    I left it.

Just shows how confusing colour has become.

When we realise that we are one people, where colour does not matter, we will go places.

We are Bajans, with all our faults and prejudices, above all, we are Bajans.

We want what is best for Barbados.

As you say, let us keep our eyes on the ball and play it on its merits.

There are tough times ahead, but “Tomorrow is a lovely day”.

It is also the title of a song from WWII which no doubt help sustain many persons in their darkest hours.

Check the lyrics on google, … and keep the faith.

  79. Adrian Loveridge

    Mr Griffith..

If my memory is correct your hero won St. Michael South with a majority of around 150 seats in the last election.

I am sure there are more than 150 tourism workers who vote in this constituency and perhaps they will be influenced by lost jobs, short time working, reduced service charges and other consequences of the policies (or lack of them) implemented by the Minister.

Never has a Minister of Tourism had so much and has done so little, but history will record it was the same in the AAA, BHTA and refusal to accept overall responsibility for Hotels and Resorts Ltd.

’90,000 visitors in the week of CWC final’

    ’75,000 cruise ship passengers’

‘The Government of Barbados has not borrowed any US$15 million from anybody’.

Yes! Perhaps you are right Mr Griffith, lets keep him as Minister of Tourism for another 5 years and see how much much damage he can do to the industry and how many more hundreds of millions he can waste.

  80. Jupiter

    John

I agree with you that the sunday episode on brasstacks may have struck a blow for press freedom.

I too note the emergence and intervention of henry forde and it tells me no matter how upset the b’s are with their leader the troops usually rally around the party when the chips are down.

What they haven’t reckoned on is the determination of the barbadian electorate to rid themselves of this albatross.

  81. Michele

I think the people of Barbados have let this group of lying crooks get away with to much for to long.

The longer they have to lead gives them enough time to cover the tracks that are there.

Don’t anyone think that they are trying to do that all now?

They have gone about trying to make people afraid and it so far has worked. If people would make enough noise the rest of the world would hear and pay attention. They would no longer be able to hide as it would all have to come out and in the face of the world Bajans would see justice.

The only way they know how to keep being in charge is using scare tactics. Why put off for another day what you can do today?

People all over the world have made a stand for one reason or the other againts leaders of countries and the rest of the world had to see justice done.

Why do people keep talking and let them away with crime againts the people. Bajans stop trying to pretend to the rest of the that the island is perfect it takes alot of pride to let the rest of the world know it’s not.

I know everyone comes on here and say what they have to and it’s makes one feel good to get alot off your chest. That’s all well and good but the crooks have chance to read this and more time to cover their tracks.

  82. Rumplestilskin

    Dear Mr.Thompson,

While the election will be very close to call, some of us do believe that there may be sopme serious surprises.

Please get ready to lead. Lift yourself now to the goal of being a statesman, to repesent Barbados and Barbadians and indeed, the ‘good’ citizens of this world to the best of your abilities.

Call your potential Ministers in and give them all your views of what you and all Barbadians will need and indeed expect from them.

Your 15 (or somewhat more) minutes may just be coming shortly.

Best wishes to you and your family in your endeavors.

I agree with almost all the comments above re. this debacle but am I the only one unconvinced that the DLP will do any less terrible a job if in power ? More of the same is how it looks from here. Would anyone with some serious integrity and credibility care to start a new party ?

  85. paul sealy

welcome to BARCUBA my friends….that’s our new name after the next BLP win…where donkey carts and box carts will be back with a bang….where asking questions about ministers personal wealth will get you the firing squad…no judge..no jury…NWO style.

  86. Does anyone understand what John is saying????? John why do you write such difficult to understand contributions? John a low blow does is not illegal. I want to hear the contents of that email, becuase unless it’s contents were blatant lies, and where stated as statements of truth and not as questions seeking a response, then there is nothing in any libel law or the defamation acts that can be successfully held over anyone’s head. Until i hear otherwise i will see this as yet another case of libel threat made to an uninformed and very afraid company, by a bunch of persons who really have something to hide, and that these persons no matter their titles, they prestige, and assumed importance, are not worthy of the respect that their are now forced to threaten, and fight for.

  87. paul sealy

Michele..it is not that easy..people fear being victimised by Mr.E.S.A.F AND CREW AND LOSING THEIR LIL’ PICK….then can’t pay the mortgage on the house..the car that warrens or simpson motors juck out their eye for…the food prices super centre jucking them in their eye wid everyday…you see what i’m saying ….they don’t want to lose what they have achieved so far…so a lot of them stay silent and let the majority get unfaired..that is life in Barbados.

  88. John

    It is simple Adrian.

We know the libel threats have gone on in the past and guess at how many were made.

This time, people are watching and the threateners are pretty close to being in the open. They may keep their identities hidden. They may not.

The result of their threat is in the open. Sam, Cow and the Duppy can see and hear.

I think this is a difference.

The fact that you can ask to see the email …. and be heard, …. is also different.

Whether you get to see it is moot, but some kind, brave person might post the contents of the email as read on the program on the net, somewhere, sometime.

This is a difference, much is in the open and possibilities exist for greater exposure.

Sure there is cowering, and sure some people are not worth the respect they get. Sure we despise the fact that such could exist in our country, and we allow it.

But remember, Ghandi won a fight by not fighting!!

We will see how things turn out, and of course, I may be wrong. I am just recognising the possibility that David Ellis and VOB (or someone higher) might have pulled a Ghandi on the intervenors.

    We will see.

  89. True Native

Jupiter: “What they haven’t reckoned on is the determination of the Barbadian electorate to rid themselves of this albatross”.

Very true, Jupiter, but the Barbadian electorate also wish to make sure they will not be exchanging an albatross for a corbeau (John Crow). David Thompson and the DLP have to keep the pressure on re the integrity legislation issue and to show they are willing to put into action what they are saying. As Michele says, this lot are being given time to cover their tracks and you can bet your life that is what they are doing all like now. Their backs are against the wall and they are panicking, as witness Sir Henry’s appearance on Brass Tacks. You need strategy to deal with this lot, you hear?

The nonsense you wrote above is not worthy of me reading it, so I shan’t.

After that even when he was PM he was an arrogant so and so. One day I was in Cave Shepard and spoke to Tom and he ignored me, when I got home I called Lady Adams and within 30 mins I got a call from Tom saying sorry for being rude. It is not that I don’t not know the BLP, maybe I know them too well, that is why I have always fought against them
The DLP is the only way forward for Barbados, the BLP is the past, the way to slavery and bondage. The rich people are the ones who are going to be holding the chains and when they say jump, we will have to say how high

What is needed is a new political party that can make a difference.

The PEP and NDP have been think tanks and are unable to govern.

It is going to be difficult to undo the manipulation of the records in the various Government departments.

Some time ago a blogger on BFP called Tariq advised other bloggers to periodically check their Birth Certificates in the Registry because these records were subject to tampering.

We are aware of cases of more than one person holding title deeds to the same piece of property.

This seems to be the most hopeless of situations when the official records cannot be depended on to be accurate.

  93. ??

Patrick, As I have said on many occassions I always find your posting interesting. Tom was arrogant but also very intelligent and ran the country well. Talking of arrogance there are few who knew EWB who did not think him arrogant as well. Both men had brilliant minds but on personal levels were at least not very nice. Ability beats our personality every time. I question Thompson’s ability, he has tried and failed before.

I know you question Owen and Noel’s ability and that is your right and makes this Blog a very interesting place to start one’s morning. Pity some other do not carefully choose their words instead of ranting and raving.

I have an update from Canada
The Liberal Party of Quebec has lost their majority in the Quebec House.
They have won 46 seats. The new party the ADQ has won 41 seats and the seperatist party the PQ only has 36
The PQ were convinced that they would win the Government, but in stepped the ADQ and took away their victory.
The people of Quebec were fed up with the two parties and have shown their disgust by electing a large number of the new party
We in Canada are happy that the PQ did not win the election as we would have had another referendum to face on whether or not Quebec should leave Confederation
The support for the PQ is slipping the same same the BLOC, lets hope it continues that way. I can see another Federal Election doming soon to get rid of the BLOC out of the Federal Parliment
Lets hope the same happens to the BLP in Barbados

I have done what I did and I can’t take it back and I wouldn’t, only thing is I keep seeing something on my PC since then that has me thinking. My Nana told me years ago not to be afraid of things that you can see and from that I have to stay brave.

Hey I have an idea lets make Adrian Loveridge Min of Tourism…. see how much better he can do it, after alienating most hoteliers in Barbados
    ————————————————————–
Be careful what you wish for. I think the man has demonstrated his ability very well. Of course I am not blinded by his color, accent, and or place of birth, and certainly don’t have any partisan considerations. I am convinced that Adrian Loverage would have a tremendous POSITIVE effect on our Tourism sector, and that such would benefit us all. He already has his “Plantation” and therefore this reduces the possibility of distraction from the task.

  105. “Plantation” is used to define Adrian’s Hotel, and was a play on Barney Lynch assumed ownership of a plantation, while thinking of Johnny-my-boy song:”I want a plantation, want it at any cost……I want uh privilage to manage or mismanage, to help control de nation, I want uh plantation.”

Who would have thought that John King back then would be telling us about Barney Lynch today? maybe not, maybe John King’s song and Barney Lynch’s actions are proof positive that the more things are said to have change, the more they remain the same.

  106. Wishing in Vain

You know a forced apology is really no apology at all not certain why Mr Ellis needed to apologise in the first place I feel that as a leading reporter it is his right to delve deeply into issues and bring them to the fore and expect his questions to be responded to and not in the way Lynch did by drawing the race card and asking Mr Ellis why he would ask him such is it because he is is a little black boy if it were a white man he would never have asked him this, this gives me a clear indication that this person has a major chip on his shoulder and is not fit to run a ministry such as tourism (who make up the majority of the tourist White people) which is our number one money earner and deals with mainly white tourist how ironic.
He should be dealt with in the press and dealt with harshly, not as it is with the press and President Bush where they feed him soft questions because of his limitations of brain power but then again we can say the same about Lynch’s limitations in brain power as well.
In summary this apology is a total waste of time and effort because there is a lot that these people need to respond to and clear the air and secondly there is very little or no doubt that Lynch has amassed a lot of wealth in very short time and we need to know where it arrived from and if it proves that the treasury is the source he needs to be taken to court and charged so to the Hallam Nicholls the Bannisters, the Shoreys the Owing Arthurs, the Coxs, the Thompsons, the Glyne Clarkes hopefully all of them can be brought to justice in one swoop of the pen of DPP and the PM His Exc Rt Hon Mr David Thompson.

  107. Fred

I think I may understand where Lynch gained his wealth from, it was when he was discussing a matter with someone he suggested that instead of arranging to pay the Carnival Destiny the
US $ 3 mill he should have arranged it for
US $ 5 Mill and pocketed the difference, now that will give you some idea what he is capable of and his make up.
What do you think you are dealing with Saints no not likely maybe some crooks.

  108. Adrian Loveridge

I have just spoken to the owner of one of our top restaurants and he is admitting that his business is 30% DOWN so far of the month of March.

If he is lucky, he believes that he will finish March at 25% down.

What does this mean, if this is typical across the tourism industry?

Well in his case it means a loss of 22 diners a night at an average of $160 per person spend, so $21,000 a week or $84,000 a month.

Of course it isn’t only the owners of the restaurant that suffer.
The staff with reduced service charges, the hotel suppliers etc., etc.

Now the question that the Minister has to answer is, will the 90,000 vistors he expects for the CWC final week plus the 75,000 cruise ship passengers make up for reduction in tourism earnings over a four or five week period?

  109. Lady Anon

Will the 75,000 cruise ship passengers eat off the ship? Or will meals be included? If meals are included, I don’t expect the 75,000 to be spending much on food, etc.

  110. IMFBOSS

Tsk,Tsk,when will you peasants learn, you can’t ask a minister in a corrupt country that has no T&A laws to account for his personal wealth after being practically a “virtual beggar” as my sources informed me he was called, leave Mr.Arthur’s henchmen alone, they don’t want you nosey lesser mortals talking and getting into business that does not concern you all, when we take over then you can talk all you want because by then it will not make a difference anyway, that is our plan.

  111. John

    Lady Anon

Guess the answer lies inside the 25 x 40ft containers wherever thay may be.

Have anyone seen in the Nation what Owen was saying at the weekend in England?

He says “give back to slaves children” and then he went on about all the ways England. Has that man got any shame at all?

Now if those people in Hull knew what he and his people think and what they are doing, they might be asking him to give back.

And what is this interest in everything Africa?

I’m not talking slavery now, as I have worked with and know some Africans and trust me the good ones seem to be locked away. As just yesterday I had to deal with a girl who was going around with the claim she was from the West Indies when I had to ask her questions she knew nothing of the island she claim she was from.

I can see why Owen would try to even get people interested in Africa, the same crap goes on with leaders there as in Barbados. I’m on on both sides of the black and white fence and I’m sick of all the talk. I love Barbados and like everyone else want to see a better place.

I’m just venting as I’m fed up that these crooks who have no shame go all over the place and pretend to have the people’s interest at heart.

Can’t anyone hear that, your man Owen can’t even speak, why did people vote for him anyway? No class, no shame , no morals and I can go on.

  113. ??

Adrian, I appreciate your view and you are entitled to it but I disagree. Maybe Mr Loveridge can do an informal survey of Hoteliers to see how may will work with him… That should be interesting.

  114. Patrick Porter

    Lady Annon

The meals are included in the cost of the package. A friend of mine is going to be on the ship and he said he and his wife have all the meals etc included. So restaurants have to take the hit and live with it I guess.
    ??
I could work with Adrian, as a lot of his figures make sense to me. Having been in the business for 40 years I know what he is talking about. The problem with a lot fo Bajan Hoteliers, they have this attitude that they are better than anyone else, hate to inform them they are not

  115. Javon Griffith

    Mr. Loveridge

Would you prefer the Hon. Member for St. Lucy to be the Minister of Tourism? That is what will happen if the DLP wins the election (which they won’t). I can count at least 21 members of the BLP that will retain their seats, so I’m happy with the fact that the BLP will lead this country until 2011 or so.

Perhaps Mr. Loveridge, you would prefer the DLP’s proposed second airport in St. Lucy lol.

Let’s not forget that it is the DLP that offered 600 Million Barbados dollars to Bajans in the first 45 minutes of that whipper snapper’s mediocre reply to the budget. Duty free cars to teachers and nurses….within 100 days….what a load of rubbish, and yet Mr. Loveridge you talk about wastage? I hope you realise that those brokeback mountaineers who call themselves the DLP will also benefit from those duty free cars lol.

  116. Javon Griffith

On another note Mr. Loveridge, between April 15th and the 29th, my workplace has very strong bookings for dinner. We’ve had phone calls from people in England booking tables for dinner. Perhaps those are part of the number of visitors forecasted by our most noble and astute Min of Tourism.

I appreciate my view too, it is a one base on Mr. Loverage actions, views and opinions on tourism in Barbados, Your disagreement on the other hand isn’t worth much without something of substance to back it up. Did Owen Arthur first sought the approval of the Holtiers to appoint Barney Lynch as the Minister of Tourism?

Griffith you are an absolute a_s hole why don’t you open your eyes and ears and see what your gang of crooks are doing to this island they are plundering it as they wish Owing collecting in excess of $ 100 Mill for the awarding of the contract for the jail????? This is but only one.
How could anyone wish this corruption onto a place they supposely like.
With regards to the BLP gaining 21 seats it would be a surprise to me that Mia the BITER Mottley will hold her seat after her showing her slip with her various ministries remember her as Minister of education when she took TC with her when minister of Culture when she filled CBC with all her lesbian clan, and her latest her handling of the Visa requirements and her biting fiasco, this is a nice seat to try to hold you will be lucky to have three members going back to the house to find three honest ones in the BLP is quite an undertaking.

What I can’t understand is how can a caribsurf breakdown result in their radio connection asking for a password?

  122. Marcus2

Do not accept any apology from Starcom Minister Lynch. Take them to court and sue for $20millon. Then David Ellis can truthfully tell the nation that you are millionaire. At their expen$e. There is no amount of spending or arrivals for this short term period that will override the losses from our usual Winter arrivals that really spend their money in shops, bars and restaurants, these are lost they are gone let us pick up the crumbs and scraps off of the floor and make the most of them.
Mind you do not believe for a moment Lynchs mouthings about 90,000 arrivals this is a figment of his imagination trust me with a usual 10,000 per week with cricket you should expect maybe 25,000 as your max the rubbish about 75,000 on ships in the port as Mr Loveridge states this would require 28 vessels the size of Carnival Destiny in the port at the same time, bearing in mind that our stated vessel arrivals is now down to 10 vessels and all of them being smaller than the Destiny what does that tell you?
Where are the 75,000 (pie in the sky figures by Lynch) going to be staying must be at his plantation home????

On the phone with me you categorically denied any correlation between Sunday’s incident, Monday’s on air apology, today’s publish newspaper apology, and the online streaming lockout, yet you cannot as yet give your international callers, and listeners, an explanation for the shut-out. Sorry my friend until I hear otherwise I will hold out that my speculation is closer to the truth than your denial.

If there is a 600 million give away to Barbadians for a DLP win, pray tell what is wrong with that? Other than outdoing the Planterclass infested BLP at their aged old vote buying, cornbeef and biscuits, Master/client, Ernest Mottley initiated, Liz Thompson et al continued practice? My guess is that Barbadians should continue to accept handouts for votes, there after suck salt until next election time right?

This is what i suggested to the screener who first put me to speak to some technical person. I suggested that the password is initiated from “stream.caribsurf.com” the only troubleshooting he needs is to get on the phone with Caribsurf. For me the series of events culminnating in this lock-out, will always be deliberate and exemplifies the practice, of censure, censor, victimization, and libel threats that characterize Barbadian culture and life. The apologists have run their course, they can no longer be allowed to offer up these kinds of timid responses to clear and blatant actions devise and designed to deny and hideup that which is wrong.

It will never be heard again we are living in a very corrupt society controlled by the short man who is absolute in terms of power and rules with placing fear in residents.

Caribsurf had a problem mid morning. I was back online about 11:00am or so. Can’t remember the exact time.

I phoned them as soon as my connection dropped out and they told me they had no problem. The lady then came back on the line and told me others were reporting the same thing and she would check as it appeared C&W had a problem.

Her name was Tameka I believe.

I responded to your posts and those of others earlier, before the problem, and was lamenting the fact that I had only figured out how to work the computer and get VOB on Sunday and now all fall down.

That was well before the caribsurf error I experienced. Desmond Johnson is confused, or there must have been another Caribsurf problem.

If he is confused, then kudos to you for getting VOB to chage it back quick after your explicit description of what you were going to do over and away.

Lynch can try to make this race but that aint working . This issue is about accountability and he have demonstrated he is of the opinion he owe no one an explanation. Rommel Marshall thought the same too. A word to the wise. Well in this case its obvious that advice wont be taken. Prime Minister I call on you to comment.

On another point related it is interesting how VOB streams all of a sudden you need passwords to access. Freedom of the press……… it seems no longer exsist in Barbados. Where is PEP on this ??where is the DLP on this?? I await their input

    _______________________________

Here is De Orginal’s complaint about VOB at 8:48am BFP time.

My last post is at 5:33pm BFP time.

The VOB problem was seen about 9 hours ago long before Caribsurf had their problem, about 5 hours ago.

Unless Caribsurf had another problem all I can say is:

    Adrian

“You is a powful man!! You like you gine cause some sleepless nights bout hey!!”

  136. Devil's Advocate

Guess you have to blame BFP for caribsurf’s problems.See the way I see it,the amount of internet users has tripled since Sunday afternoon, for years now caribsurf knew full well that their pipe to the internet is inadequate, without getting itto the technical aspect let me make it as simple as I can.
It is like putting a 6 inch main across the country and then having a 20mm conduit to get on the internet.
This knocks out equipment most of the time at BET.
So with the rise in BFP users along with the everyday msn, yahoo, skype etc. users, added to that ,the sunbeach and tele barbados users who ,by the way all go through C&W,you can expect a lot more problems with caribsurf.
    Trust me ….I know.

  137. I haven’t done anything. VOB streaming is still requesting a user id and password. As I type, a team has been assemble to indentify all radio stations in the US norhteast corridor that has caribbean flavoured segment. We ain’t got the mob a tun of money they want for the stands. We got to watch TV or stan outside.
This is something that has really annoyed me throughout this whole CWC thing
They are classing the prices of admission with places like the UK, Australia etc, we in the Caribbean don’t have that kind of money to spend on cricket, especially when the prices at the supermarkets etc are so high. The average family can’t afford to splurge like that
It is fine to bring a fancy thing like the CWC to the Caribbean but they have to adapt to our standard of living and not that of the developed world
I am sick and tried of the people of the Caribbean being used as tools in this political chess game.
Barbados has enough problems without having to fork over 1/2 billion to stage an event. We need housing for the poor a better heath care system etc and not a 300 milliom stadium. I am not saying it is not nice, but we need to get our priorities in order before spending like a drunken sailor
We ned to talk about our dying tourism industry and as I think that Adrian mentioned awhile ago that Barbados has been a has been destination. We need to rethink our whole marketing plan, otherwise we going to be seeling the hotels to use for apartments for local occupation. We need to talk to the hoteliers and get them on side for putting together proper packages, for both winter and summer. We need to talk to the Cruise ship industry, even if it mans giving breaks on the docking fees. They are so many things that can be done to boost our tourism industry. All we have is a minister who thinks that everything is just rosy and peachy. The time for action is now, not in 2 years. ACT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

Christ set the best example for us all to follow, i am trying to do my part of it, and if i can recall he did so with little fear and lots of conviction, if i can attempt to live by that example then so can you. A former US President once said “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” and fear to my mind is not characterize by Owen Arthur, or Barney Lynch, or the cadre of Lawyers who would hide behind invalid perceptions and interprtations of libel and defamation law to hoodwinked the citizenry, no none of these persons represents that fear.

Then, I would also like you to state why you forgot to mention the work done on the Airport and thr Sea Port in your assessment of what Noel Lynch has accomplished? Do you see the Airport project as a waste of money?

So, explain to me, why did he not realise before hand that the people at the airport would get wet? Are you trying to tell me that the Minister will build a house without windows and doors and only realise after the fact that the furniture will get wet?

I remember in 1986 I was pro BLP, anti DLP.

Man, I predicted something like what you got predicted above. Three blind mice resulted.

Since then I have watched and learnt.

Now I am anti DLP, anti BLP, anti PEP and pro MLP, that is until I heard the lady on Brass Tacks complaining about the rats and monkeys yesterday destroying the crops.

Who ever is in I want out, the faster the better, less time to pilfer (that is the politically correct word).

That’s all I can say to you, watch and learn.

    You are young, aren’t you?

Don’t mind that, nobody holds it against you, you will learn!

Here is a letter I have sent to the Nation, it will not be published as the Nation is controlled by the BLP, however I intend to send the same letter over and over again, it may block all their other correspondence, but it will be published

    Dear Sir/Madam

I read with some interst the behaviour of our Minister of Tourism on Brass Tacks the other day, it annoys me to see the arogance of his behaviour
I have been saying for awhile that we need teo pieces of legislation in Barbados
    1. The Freedom of Information Act, where newspapers etc can get all the pertinent documents to trace their stories
    2. The Intregtrity Act, where any member of Parliament who is caught with his hands in the cookie jar can be prosecuted to the full extent of the law
It is time that members of Parliamnet live with in the law and not outside it.
After all they are our SERVANTS and not our masters
Barbados wake up to what is going on before it is too late

    Patrick Porter
    Canada

P.S. I know you will not publish this as you are an orgen of the ruling BLP

That is my letter and as I said I shall be pestering them until it is published

PP…wish you luck. But as they say, “expect nothing and then you won’t be disappointed”

Javon Griffith – there are many fish in the sea and you choose to be a red herring and a sprat.

I have listed two quotes for you below you should really take them to heart

“Never answer a critic, unless he’s right”.
    Bernard M. Baruch (1870 – 1965)

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826).

You talked about the BLP ruling until 2011 if they are allowed to continue unchecked, then they will be no Barbados to rule over by 2011. Who is not sick and dying, will be starving, or just too beaten down to stand up against the injustices. I really can never understand these megalomaniacs who want to take over the world by destroying it, who will they rule over.

You are more concerned with defending a “mice”(this is intentional) than you are about looking around and being concerned about your country on a whole.

But then again you never said that you were a Patriot, perhaps only a paid parrot.

You will do well to remember – a man/mice is but a breath, and twine is not as long as twine.

  168. Warrior

That should have been twine is not as long as time

You have lived outside of Barbados for a long time. In my experience living inside Barbados these are some of the things which have happened when people spoke out or challenged the powers that be. I am sure there are others of which I am not aware.

    (1) Threats to life, safety, job, family
    (2) Stealing peoples’ property
    (3) Senior authorities trespassing unannounced on private property
    (4) Audits – NIS, VAT, Inland Revenue
    (5) Abusive telephone calls from the PM himself and others
    (6) Mail tampering
    (7) Repeated intimidation
    (8) Serial anonymous telephone calls from 2 am.
    (9) Repeated frustration and delays in simple straightforward matters
    (10) Ignoring legitimate complaints
    (11) Nowhere to turn for help – hopelessness

  170. Warrior

Pulled this info from the Transparency International website http://www.transparency.org

    How do you define corruption?
Transparency International (TI) has chosen a clear and focused definition of the term: Corruption is operationally defined as the misuse of entrusted power for private gain. TI further differentiates between “according to rule” corruption and “against the rule” corruption. Facilitation payments, where a bribe is paid to receive preferential treatment for something that the bribe receiver is required to do by law, constitute the former. The latter, on the other hand, is a bribe paid to obtain services the bribe receiver is prohibited from providing.

    What is “transparency”?
“Transparency” can be defined as a principle that allows those affected by administrative decisions, business transactions or charitable work to know not only the basic facts and figures but also the mechanisms and processes. It is the duty of civil servants, managers and trustees to act visibly, predictably and understandably.

TG i am not one of those Barbadians that attempts to stiffle debate by imposing overreaching pragmatism to every comment, but i do call for some level of proof to what is being contended, I would even accept speculation if it is arrived at from peices of actual and or factual information. A number of those things you highlighted are blatently obvious, others you may know and certainly has occurred in some of the other islands, but can be disputed by the “apoligists” in a Barbadian context. So stand ready. :D

The entrenched powerbrokers play for keeps, but if you oppose them on conviction, and a sense of rightness, there isn’t a force in our collective history that won against such persons, with such convictions. Freedom is never won without a fight, without commitment to task, you must be prepared to risk all, or gain nothing. How bad do want accountable politicians in a system that have you the people at the center? how bad? that is the question you must answer with a call to action.

what a crying shame that David Ellis was made to apolagize for being a journalist. Only a guilty man would react in the manner that the honorable minister did and I am always leary of anyone who tries to defend themselves by stating how honest they are.

Barbados it is time to wake up because if this mad BLP bunch is allowed to continue anymore I shudder about citizens even having the right to question anything this government does. It is quite scary and this is how dictatorships are formed. I recently watched the movie Last King of Scotland and I was reminded that Amin started out as quote unquote man of the people. Sounds familiar ? wake upBarbados demand freedom of information and integrity legislation.
All of you yard fowls stop and think for a minute is the direction that Owen is going in really in the best interest of this country ? And if gone unchecked whats next tampering with the ballot boxes and no one there to say a word?
The choice is yours Barbados if change is not made what will you tell the next generation as to why you stood idle and did nothing while you watch this country being pilferred and basic liberties stripped.

  178. Javon Griffith

Once again I shall retort, what a load of rubbish. I am not the Minister of Tourism, if I was, I would identify myself as such. As far as I know, Minister Lynch didn’t lie or withhold the truth about the Carnival Destiny. The Government didn’t rent it, the Barbados Tourism Authority did.

I find it highly remarkable and mind-boggling that no has denied that the 21 persons I’ve identified will win their seats comprehensively for the most part in the next election.

Barbados has an excellent opportunity to be among a list of illustrious and distinguished countries in the world that have had the distinct privilege of hosting the ICC CWC. What is most disappointing is that all you people can do is to be negative.

Additionally, no one can dispute the fact that Noel Lynch is all but one man, and he is doing the best possible job.

The bulk of this comment was removed because the writer turned it into a highly innuendo-laced piece speculating on whether or not certain Members of Parliament have sex with their own gender.

We don’t have the time or the inclination to go through each comment to edit out a word and phrase here and there, so our readers will have to police themselves or the entire comment will be removed… which is a shame because there are many good ideas that are being tossed aside over these sexual innuendos.

Although we haven’t really been on top of this issue or spoken on this issue before, we are now… because such comments are taking the focus off the stated objectives of this blog. Bajans will talk and gossip – and we let all sorts of things that we don’t personally like slide by in the comments because we don’t want to limit the flow of communication.

But this theme of highly sexual innuendo is changing the mood of the blog and detracting from our work.

Lets all concentrate our efforts on finding 45,000 available rooms for the ’90,000 visitors’ that are going to be here for the cricket final week.

To those who never knew it before ELLIS is a big Dem. He has always been and will always be. When the little boy was hungry and homeless it was Branford Taitt who took him in. Taitt gave Ellis his first job in Barbados and so therefore he is eternally grateful. That is what that nasty, sluttest behaviour was about on Sunday.

Ellis frequents Taitt’s house, the one that the tax payers repaired and is involved with receiving some of the money swiddledoff the famous St. Joseph Hospital. So acts like the one pulled on Sunday is his way of repaying Taitt and the DLP for his slice of the fatted calf. Barbadians must ask themselves, has Ellis ever criticized the red boy thompy for his fatted calf statement? And what is the fatted calf policy? It is simply a policy that says that under a DLP government the treasury will be used to provide personal funds for the likes of bulling Parris, red neck yellow belly Loveridge, the negrocrat Hoyte, the girl Wickham, the prostitute Hartley, the man in tall heel shoes Jones, the beggar Ellis, teifing taitt and the rest of the band of crooks.

Thompy wants this government so he can get his hands on the treasury’s funds to spend on himself and parris to get even more naked under the blanket.

Bloggers have you been made aware that thompy has just built a lovely house for his driver? Attempts are being made to get a photo for this blog. Believe me fellow bloggers it looks better than the house shown on this blog as presumably owned by Min. Clarke. Is the services of this driver is so important and sweet to thompy that he has to show such profound gratitude?

The problem with the Dems is that they feel that every body thinks and behaves like them so they accuse every one with the very things for which they are renowned. For them everyone is a thief or a homo. However when a proper assesment is done the DLP is home to all the sins of this world.

Who could want to see a group of men in the parliament of this country who only a few years ago was responsible for stealing money from carsicot, school meals service, st. joseph hospital, sherbourne and the list goes on. Even now this government cannot bring the st. joseph hospital enquiry to completion because of the missing files that were taking away from the law court by the Defence Force as ordered by the DLP. To this day no one knows where those files are being kept.

Javon, why don’t you follow Lynette and say we don’t need an opposition at all?

I thought that David Thompson’s reply to the Budget was excellent. It was relevant, well-delivered, passionate, incisive and hopeful. I was impressed by David Estwick and Michael Lashley.

We just spent $300 million plus on Kensington etc. It will be more in the end!

$600 million of the people’s money spent on them is quite appropriate. Most of the promises which will cost money were not promised in the first 100 days. You are not telling the truth. I like the DLP proposals and I am happy to vote for them next time.

  199. Jerome Hinds

Vortex, I endorse your views and intentions….!!

The DLP has represented itself well.!!

  200. ha ha ha ha Chris Sinkler reminded us of the Bonaparte state, where super structures are created by the GoB, funded by the Taxpayers of Barbados, and accountable to know one. Parliament can’t question them, in fact parliament can’t even question a sub-group of itself called the cabinet which is so large it cannot be contained.
    ————————————-

    Thomas Paine (1736-1809)

He rejects a mixed government (west minister) as being driven by corruption. In a mixed government, there is no responsibility, as the Prime Minister can defer, or blame, a Minister can defer or blame the Parliament; the Parliament can defer to the people” ——-or they can defer or blame these super structures.

A mixed Government is an imperfect everything, cementing and soldering the discordant parts together by corruption, to act as a whole.

In mixed Governments there is no responsibility: the parts cover each other till responsibility is lost; and the corruption which moves the machine, contrives at the same time its own escape.

A Prime Minister, who shelters himself under a majority in Parliament, which, by places, pensions, and corruption, he can always command; and that majority justifies itself by the same authority with which it protects the Minister. In this rotatory motion, responsibility is thrown off from the parts, and from the whole.

When there is a Part in a Government which can do no wrong, it implies that it does nothing; and is only the machine of another power, by whose advice and direction it acts. What is supposed to be the King in the mixed Governments, is the Cabinet; and as the Cabinet is always a part of the Parliament, and the members justifying in one character what they advise and act in another, a mixed Government becomes a continual enigma; entailing upon a country by the quantity of corruption necessary to solder the parts, the expense of supporting all the forms of government at once, and finally resolving itself into a Government by Committee; in which the advisers, the actors, the approvers, the justifiers, the persons responsible, and the persons not responsible, are the same persons.

By this pantomimical contrivance, and change of scene and character, the parts help each other out in matters which neither of them singly would assume to act. When money is to be obtained, the mass of variety apparently dissolves, and a profusion of parliamentary praises passes between the parts. Each admires with astonishment, the wisdom, the liberality, the disinterestedness of the other: and all of them breathe a pitying sigh at the burthens of the Nation.
    —————————————————–

…….So of course JAVON you would wish to distract and remove responsibility from the GoB to one of it’s created super structures.

Lynch will fight to the end because he knows what it is to be bounching cheques and having money problem. His goal is never to be broke. When he worked at the BHTA he had a bad reputation for not paying his bills and when he tried to pay them they bounched all over the place. I remember the days when he was very critical of the same Gems Projects he now presides over

If the DLP wins the upcoming election you will regret it….let us go back to 1994 when Mr. Thompson gave away all those concessions….millions of dollars to the likes of Lawrence Duprey. He seems to love Leroy Parris more than his own wife lol.

You remember when so many Bajans lost their homes and were laid off because of the policies of the DLP? That is why they will never win another Government in Barbados. We have not forgotten. Everything they do is devoid of any logic.

So go adhead and vote for the whipper snapper……who tried to oust EWB from his empire.

The Barbados Tourism Authority, as we know, is an area of concern. Even in the most recent special audit at the Barbados Tourism Authority concerns of all kinds were expressed. However the sexier Urban Development Commission overshadowed the special audit at the Barbados Tourism Authority. Many concerns are being raised at the Barbados Tourism Authority. It is believed that the dollar is not securing as much marketing mileage as it should because of some of the difficulties in terms of structure at the Barbados Tourism Authority. I have already said that for a staff of just over 90 there are 17 managers at the Barbados Tourism Authority. It has to be a source of concern that there is one manager per four staff. Why should there be such a lopsided structure where the budget, which is now 6o million dollars, has not been yielding the kinds of revenue that it should? There are all kinds of concern with respect to the way our money is being spent.

I am being told that on a trip to Britain, the Minister and the top-ranking staff of the Barbados Tourism Authority are chauffeur-driven, they stay in the most plush suites of high-ranking hotels across London, they enjoy very palatial conditions and the best life in London, while hoteliers who are going to London to ply their trade, who can afford travel on first-class tickets but travel on economy-class, would stay in lesser-priced hotels in London. Hoteliers who I would not name raised Sir this situation.

Javon Griffith and Royalrumble you two have not realised as yet that you two idiots are barking up the wrong tree with your brand of nonsense? that is better suited to the BLP site where you can find other idiots like yourselves, this site may have idiots on it as well that once voted for your brand of politics but the idiots here have been enlightened and have seen thru your corrupt leader and his followers and want a totally different path for our country we are not blinded by party loyalites to vote for a party that has done this much harm to our nation we need change from this corrupt bunch sooner rather than later.
I voted on the last two occassions for this party but trust me not this time I have seen the best and the worst of them and I have decided no more for me my vote goes to the DLP this was more or less decided last evening in my back and forth with Duguid when I realised these people are so bent on retaining power at all cost that they are prepared to lie even for the simplest of things.

Javon Grifith is such an idiot…..h/she does not even know that Esther Byer-Suckoo is as bajan as any bajan can be. Her father is bajan. She went to school at QC and is related to Richard Byer.

Maybe Javon does not live on the island. Even if Esther was foreign Owen loves Foreigners…in fact he employs them illegally and because he is Lord Rummy ESAF, he is not charged like the Manager who brought in the 14 indians.
If you totalled the amount of money these fellows thief, squandered and gave away in order to collect for the upcoming elections there would be no reason for any of us in Barbados to pay taxes for a long time.

  223. ?

Does anyone know anything about the government’s involvement in the Durants golf project?

I have been hearing some things.

    Javon…

Just to let you and the other BLP jacka**es know. Esther Byer is a born and bred Bajan, went to school at QC and won a Barbados Exhibition. And you know that unless you are a born and bred Bajan you cannot benefit from Barbados Scholarships and Exhibitions.

Do not let her name by marriage fool you…but then again, you let everything else fool you. A vote for the BLP is a vote for the future? Question…the future of what? If we continue along this line, there will be no future!

  229. Javon Griffith

Ok Lady Anon, have it your way. I guess David has comped you with his free car giveaway

  230. Javon Griffith

It really angers me how an educated Barbados could embrace the economic policies of that red skin jackass. I fully agree with my PM that they were a set of loose, financially reckless proposals which sought to be vote catching.

He was fooled because he thought the Honourable Member for St. Peter’s contribution was an election budget. It wasn’t. It was them fulfilling their 2003 promises. That is what I want in my government. Not a duty free car.

The hurt and anger is very clear Javon. Bajans clearly believe that this BLP Government has wasted a lot of money, GEMS, The building at Warrens, Greenland, 300 million fuh cup, etc. So they are not buying the argument that the policies are reckless and will drain the tresurery. The BLP has a perception problem, one cause by your arrogance on Immigration, on Health, on land, and on retial prices, and to boot you gave voice to this arrogance not with silence but with name calling. Do you really think that you can endare yourself to another person let alone a Bajan by name calling? Xenophobic: Owen Arthur, Gimmie people: Owen Arthur, Nasty and Dirty: either Liz thompson or Lynette Eastmond, Lazy: Owen Arthur and Lynette Eastmond, Selfish: Owen Arthur, want to go to heaven but don’t want to die. The BLP has cast themselves as an elitist group, segregating themselves by refering to themselves as the Political class, voting themselves a raise of pay at a time when everybody else was being asked to hold the line, including the police whom Owen Arthur let it be known that they are not special, and to whom Dale Marshall let them know that they guh long to wherever um is they can get more money becuase they will not be paying them those kind of wages. Yet all kinds of big money getting pass in Politicians personal accounts, friends of politicians get sweet deals after influencing government departments, using the UDC for personal gain and interest. De people want in on de give aways de sweet deals, and de lot money dat passing bout de place, and that the country can’t afford when Thompy wants to give some tuh de people.

But, then again, you are just following the mould of other BLP yardfowl and trying to skirt the issue by resorting to personal attacks.

    Hi Mr. Javon
Interesting. Hate to brand people. If you are angry it is best not to blog.

You’re a racist (quote: “red-skinned jackass”). No doubt about it. We have no room in Barbados for people who are like this, because it shows mis-education and predjudice. How can you be trusted to do or say anything fairly?

And your quip about 2003 fulfilment, all one can say is “2003 fulfillment, but with 2007 ‘hide-a bed’ accounting methods”.

If you don’t like the atmosphere, why don’t you just disappear?

    All the best to you

  239. concerned

Lady Anon said “you are quite right. I apologize.”

Jerome Hinds – Re: “The people of Barbados will vote AGAINST ”

    Don’t forget

New Prison – Cost? Anyone know?Did it go out to tender? Was a project of this magnitude awarded based on a 4 page document?

Flyovers and hoghway widening – Cost? Did it go to tender? Governemnt hired SSS to do a study of traffic flow etc to see if flyovers best solution. Surprise, surprise, SSS study says yes flyovers necessary and guess what. SSS awarded contract for flyovers and road widening required as prerequisite.

  241. Jerome Hinds

Check this link to see comments as reported in the Nation 27.03.07 by CMMB chief economist Jwala Rambarran.

    http://www.nationnews.com/story/323031896451946.php

“He also urged the Arthur Administration to include the “performance of the public sector enterprises into the overall reporting system”.

In addition I believe that both flyovers and prison are BOLT (Build, Operate,Lease,Transfer) projects and, someone correct me if I am wrong, also not included in the overall reporting system.

These projects have big numbers attached to them and a lot of financial implications. Anyone know how much each cost?

  243. John

    Just Asking

Ezra is claiming in today’s Nation that the contents of the article really do not support the headline. Last week or week before he was on about the necessity of an economist to run the country.

Suppose we had CMMB chief economist Jwala Rambarran running this country?

What is CMMB and how does it measure up in the assets and turnover it oversees when compared with the Barbados Government and its oversight of the Barbados economy?

He also writes at length about press freedom.

Looks like the Nation has also devoted a whole spread to press freedom and sought comments from various luminaries.

    Serious damage control in operation!!

  244. Jupiter

    John ma boy

I can’t tell you what went through my mind as I read the articles by Roy Morris and Harold Hoyte.

Ezra alleyne doesn’t merit my time.

Look the article by Hoyte took the cake.Do you readers still wrestle with where harold hoyte stands on the question of the BLP?

Can you imagine the publisher of a company – an elder in the media fraternity, telling us that asking those questions about a minister private wealth or lifestyle is not the done thing and unacceptable here in barbados?

Harold makes me want to puke my guts out you hear.
No wonder the Blp flourished under his rein as publisher of the nation newspaper.

(I just had to take a deep breath and delete what I just wrote down on harold hoyte).

Just to say however, this is why we in barbados are where we are.Harold hoyte’s pile of jobby is the guiding philosophy behind the nation not investigating, not reporting, not analysing the GOVERNMENT’S CORRUPTION.

It is ALL ABOUT MONEY – FOR HIM AND HIS COMPANY.

Yet we see every day these accolades be heaped on this gutless,yellow-belly,party carrying man who has sold us out – as the doyen of journalism.

Then roy morris – what can I say,it was like drinking mauby that was so watered down that you couldnot tell if it was dirty, brackish water or mauby.

You had to wait until you get to the whole article until you saw a line saying he believes these questions are legitimate, but he would have asked it differently.

Where is the supprort for press freedom, where is the call for Freedom of Information legislation,or Integrity Legislation, where is the call for changes to the Libel Laws?

Where is the support for a fellow journalist who asked a question that a lot of bajans have been talking about – and as we all know the minister would have never consented to come on the show and talk about integrity legislation – so when would david ellis have been able to ask the question?

I think I have to go and take something strong to calm me down right now.

Those articles in the press finally put things into perspective for me.

    Poor David Ellis.

It seems that the powers that be in the media and in government don’t care if you gossip behind close doors about these BLP politicians sudden, ill gotten wealth – as long as you don’t ask it on air,or seek to change the status quo.

    Lord help us p leeeease.

  245. Jupiter

The only person who has written an article on the sunday brasstacks episode and is worth reading – is Nicholas Cox from the Advocate newspaper.

  246. Jerome Hinds

    Jupiter,

We can understand the Harold Hoytes , Ezra Alleynes & Roy Morris’ of the Barbadian journalistic community…!!

Let us all hope that BFP personnel do not succumb to this MALAISE….!!!

It’s already the WEEKEND….and the WEEKEND Nation is OUT….but the promised BFP STORY on Money Laundering….is STILL under wraps…!!

The publication of such DETAILS…would at LEAST…..put paid to any ALLEGATIONS….!!

    Come on BFP…..!!!

  247. But Roy Morris, and Harold Hoyte are but two people. Why does their opinion matter more than our? They are not any more informed than anyone of us, but i understand the economic benefit to them to give appearances that this is so. I remain convince that the Bajan version of the Talented tenth of Black Barbadians is going to be the biggest hurdle to gaining popular economic enfranchizement, Press freedom, Freedom of information act, Integrity legislation, and a system of governance that allows for the popular election of the country’s leader. They are the ones that derailed Hillary’s legitimate crusade at the then Mutual. These people pretend to know when they don’t. Owen Arthur had the US secret service detain and delay Roy Morris in Miami, Owen Arthur made statements about Negrocrats and what defines a Negrocrat, and then asked Harold Hoyte if he is a Negrocrat, clearly intimating that he meant to call Harold Hoyte such but doing so in a manner that denies libelous and or defamatory intent. So you see the opinion of these two are tainted and we all know that Ezra Alleyne is a dispicable, dishonest humanbeing who has been given a new lease on life by the BLP and he has no choice than the demonstrate his gratitude. There is no difference between him and Henderson Bovell. They are tainted, but kissing bloviators. :D

    Adrian,
I agree with you …Harold and Roy are only but two persons. What matters more is what the majority of us think.

They took care of Roy Morris…promoted him and now he is as quiet as a mouse! No longer tries to ruffle any BLP Feathers. Everybody knows that although Harold does not get along with Owen he is still a supporter of the BLP.

We have to stand up for what is right.

  249. BK

I think that the 4th Estate performs a very important role as an advocate in the society. This role is important because a populace will always need an advocate to rally the sentiments which are reflected in public opinion. Against this comment Harold and Roy’s opinion can become very important given they key roles in the 4th Estate.

  250. Jupiter

    No – Name & Adrian

What makes all of the above dangerous is that bajans being notoriously passive and scared of their shadow usually wait for others like the 4th estate (ie the media) to unearth the wrong doings, but when you have the media in bed with the thieves, pimps and whores – whither investigative journalism?

Davis Ellis Sunday brasstack’s programme will be forever be etched in history as the day a journalist decided to put his money where his mouth is and to unfetter himself and got shot down by his comrades – and by friendly fire.

The role of the 4th estate has always being overstated, and at a time when it mattered, back in the days when the only form of information was in print, people back then attached much reasoning and thinking to what they were presented. Today the 4th estate has been highjacked in every society, with editors, owners and shareholders foistering their influence and access opon the rest of us. This is the most singular reason why there has been a rise in the so called “New Media” overtime people have come to realize that they have been had, and acted. The Nationnews is now known as the rag, a name it deserves.

  252. richie

not sure what is 4th estate

  253. Cartel buster

We have to pray and have faith to believe that the media will come good as details come out, and as elections approach (please let it be free reprtage).

The people who founded the Nation are good people- there are about 10 of them- and they all had to fight the system of the day to get us to the point where Barbados can progress more equitably. These good people must fight for the good of the island today, because we are under severe threats from monopolism by the private sector, and from the monopolism of the incumbent party.

Now Nation is a public company, and as such their shares can be bought by the cartels. Look out Bim, here it comes. Soon no more reliable an institution for exposure than Advocate, which is a sub-set of BLP.

In today’s Nation Roy Morris says the BMW deal may still be consummated by the govt. This will result in 80 BMW’s to give out at election time.

Or will they sell them at arm’s length through Warrens Motors cartel?

I say the cost is less to send them back. If I were the BLP I would seriously consider this, compared with my reputation.

  254. John

I am sad to say that I have never read a Harold Hoyte article in its entirety.

Just never found what he had to say remotely interesting to me. By the first papragraph I have moved on.

Heard about Roy Morris but never really read him to be able to say anything about what he stands for.

Periodically I will check Ezra when things get hot more for amusement than anything else.

When you see Ezra’s feathers ruffled, good chance the Government is ruffled too.

But it is when he appears at his coolest and most reasoned that he completely gives the game away.

The Lowdown is the only “serious” article I read from beginning to end in the Nation.

Dagwood and Blondie, sometimes Andy Cap, a horoscope or two are the other highlights which attract me, and of course I will glance at what the news for the day is and the captions on the letters to the editor.

Don’t see the Advocate unless someone refers me to an article I think is on a topic and worth the effort.

    BK & Jupiter,
What ever became of the Sentinel, a newspaper that was launched a few months ago? Prior to the launch it was said by Thorpe that “It will be more than your regular newspaper. We will also be bringing online news as it happens,” Thorpe said.

Even BFP said “We understand that the investors are not without legal resources and that the paper will be pushing right up to the line whenever journalistic integrity calls for it.”

So far it has not made any impact.

Harold and the original shareholders like Trevor TC Job Clarke were both once fearless. TC is the only one of them that will challenge the establishment…in fact he has Harold and The former chairman in court in relation to and among other things the spilting of shares to their benefit. There is some bad blood between the early shareholders…

The reality is that in Barbados people are afraid to voice their opinion for fear of victimisation. As I have indicated before I along with a number of persons I know have been victimised for actively promoting or appearing not to support the BLP. I have friends in Journalisn whon have received ABUSIVE phone calls from the PM.

I know of a situation which is unfolding as we speak and many people will be targeted by some very important people in this country with a view to cut them off at the knees. History has shown that people will do whatever it takes to maintain power. What makes us think that Barbadian power brokers are any different. I bought the Sentinel a few times but did not feel that it brought any thing new to the table mainly a regurgitation of news.

I started to read “The big question” in today’s Nation and had to put it down when I read that Henry Forde said that the question asked of Mr. Lynch comes from a person with a “warped mind”.

    What nonsense.

I only wish that I was the person who had sent that e-mail to Mr. Ellis so that I could challenge Sir Henry and I would without hesitation.

Perhaps we will soon see just who has the warped mind here.

How come I can’t get my on line Nation today, anyone knows?

Javon Griffith I welcome your contributions to this blog. You will find the characters here most stupid and uninformative. They are really just about two or three persons you will be communicating with but they use different names all the time. It is their feeble ploy to make believe that there is wide spread support, though only the blog.

Ask yourself how can a party whose leader is so unpopular among Barbadians, according to the latest poll and whose team of candidates look and speak so dumb can have, again only on the Blog so much support.

I know who they all are that comes on this blog in support of the defragmented DLP. They keep saying they will win even though the empirical evidence says other wise. It is their way of trying to feel good about themselves. So I would not take that from them, afterall a dying man must have his straw. All the while though Estwick, Kellman and others are busy trying to find a new leader to lead them into the 2012 election.

By the way Thompson has been considering the two options open to him at the end of his dismal political career come next year. He can either jet off to St. Lucia or beg PM Arthur for a job. I think he would make a good driver at the Mangrove Landfill.

Have you heard the news Javon? As we speak a meeting to determine the future of Ellis is on the way at Starcom. I am imformed that Starcom is not please that they should pay for anymore of the ignorant man’s folly. They say that if they pay this one for him again he would have to repay them. The problem is that Ellis has spent all the money Taitt help him with from St. Joseph Hospital. You know that Taitt is his Godfather do you? But after this settlement there is still the one from the Police so I dont know how he will manage.

Any how you have a good day blogging with these creatures that have no brains.

Nice to see you RR. I am one of the 3 people who blog here.

I am also proud to say that I am one of the hits that puts BFP so high on the blogscale and so are you.

I am honoured that RR would credit 3 of us with the wealth of knowledge and experience so obvious on this site.

This is nothing to be proud of. Look uh wuh does go on in paradise. Freedom of the press or of speech is but a pipe dream. We all know what is going on at Starcom. There are those who are already saying: “maybe it’s time to stop these programmes”. “Too contentious”. “Too many lawsuits and potential lawsuits”. “Longer delay systems”. “Lawyers to be Producers”. “Loss of sponsorship, and loss of profits” will soon follow. Having an opinion is apparently not something to be encouraged. Daring to express it is suicide!

    Diabolical forces, in paradise.

  265. ?

Did they put Brass Tacks back online yet?

  266. ?

“But after this settlement there is still the one from the Police so I dont know how he will manage.”

    WOW!

Imagine what will happen if he “talks”. I am sure he has plenty to say.

It is known that the media houses in Barbados and especially StarCom have taken out insurance policies which covers them against liabilities as a result of libel or slander.

That may be the case but what i said above is being debated in the halls of Starcom.

To BFP and my fellow bloggers,

After reading the reaction of persons on pages 12 & 13 in the Weekend Nation of 2007 – 03 – 30 please read the article on the link below and get a deeper appreciation of the challenges invovled in the establishment of Integrity Legislation.

We must remember also, most these politicians went to universities together and they network well….!!!!

the jamaican model as it presently stands might be ineffective, but the trinidad model hasn’t shown itself to be so,and note too, there are models in canada,uk and other parts of the commonwealth.

This is no reason to implement the legislation, and fast too.

We have to pray and have faith to believe that the media will come good as details come out, and as elections approach (please let it be free reprtage).
    **************************************************

This is a vain hope. I for one am playing my part. I have decreased my daily subscription to the Nation and the Advocate.

I am thinking to stop all together as I can get my international news via BBC or Fox and my local news via BFP.

The power to bring change is in our hands, the question remains as to if we want to use it.

From the looks of things money – and not people talk, if we withdraw from purchasing papers and buying adverts they will feel it where it matters most.

The love of money is the root of all evil.

    Adrian,

    I agree with your comment.

What say you BK are you really going to hold on this information???.

So much for Integrity and Transparency. BK This is not a personal attack on you, but rather an expression of a hopeless feeling that we really can’t get this horse back in the stable. Everyone is so afraid.

  275. Javon Griffith

I can see red…………..the BLP got Thompy cat spraddle. When my Honourable PM wins the upcoming election, I’ll personally take a bottle of Krug to Roebuck Street and offer my congratulations.

  276. John

Yup Javon, your number is up. You are definitely a DLP supporter masquerading as a BLP supporter to make the Bees look bad.

Your use of English is giving your game away.

    Nice try!!

  277. John

    Javon

Man you are so good that you even have the other D’s on the site fooled by your act.

    A master at work.

  278. Rumplestilskin

Javon Griffith says:”It really angers me how an educated Barbados could embrace the economic policies of that red skin jackass”

Yet another racial slur from a BLP-ite, supporting the Ministers in theirs.

  279. Rumplestilskin

I have had enough of this nonsense. I am goning to explain carefully.

Many years ago one of my friends overseas (UK) had told me that Barbados had a reputation for reverse racism and that according to his ‘close’ information, this was true to a large extent.

Now, drivel that has emanated from the mouths of the Ministers, including the PM himself over the last few years has only gone to solidify such notions and encourage supporters such as the idiot above, Javon Griffith, to utilise same.

Silly me, at the time denying the existence of reverse racism.

  280. Rumplestilskin

By the way, I normally do not insult directly or name call.

Howver, when someone perpetually uses (or maybe even once), ideas that are abhorrent, I reserve the right to abuse, name call whatever!

  281. Rumplestilskin

concerned above says”I started to read “The big question” in today’s Nation and had to put it down when I read that Henry Forde said that the question asked of Mr. Lynch comes from a person with a “warped mind”.

Who do you think are the ‘BLP Godfathers’ who put the top candidate in place many years back (because they saw he could relate to the people) and continue to ‘direct traffic’ when needed?

Defense of the party, thats all.

  282. Rumplestilskin

Javon Griffith says ‘hillbillies and brokeback mountaineers ” of the DLP.

Firstly, yes stick to the party line to convince the voters that the DLP are any less capable than yourselves. Good lad.

Secondly, people in glass houses and all that.

Brokeback mountaineers? Coming from a BLP-ite?

    Haha.

  283. No - Name

Will Ellis be hosting a program this sunday on StarCom?

    Will there be a program?

  284. Rumplestilskin

If either there is no program or Ellis is not moderating then censorship of the press (is there a press?) will be there in clear light for all to see.

We all know it exists and the group answers to those who own/ run it, incidentally BLP-ites, but this will be a clear, in your face admission if it happens.

  285. ?

Didn’t Henry Forde say that he would come on a Brass Tacks program with David Ellis to talk specifically about Integrity Legislation?

Has that plan been scrapped now?

  286. Jerome Hinds

Javon Griffith a.k.a Minister of Tourism, Noel Lynch ….

Before you cry your eyes red and drink your Krug to drown your sorrows….like you state below…!!

Tell us why the BLP wastage listed below makes you angry till your eyes turn RED……??????

” I can see red…………..the BLP got Thompy cat spraddle. When my Honourable PM wins the upcoming election, I’ll personally take a bottle of Krug to Roebuck Street and offer my congratulations. ”

Javon Griffith a.k.a Minister of Tourism, Noel Lynch , PROUD TO SAY ON,

    March 29th, 2007 at 5:18 pm

” It really angers me how an educated Barbados could embrace the economic policies of that red skin jackass.

    ————————————————————–

    ha,ha,ha……..!!

Javon Griffith a.k.a Minister of Tourism, Noel Lynch…….then compare the DLP AUTHENTIC proposals……

To the PROUD record of the BLP over the past 13 years……..

The people of Barbados will vote AGAINST :

    1. Wastage at Greenland……$ 80 MILLION and COUNTING……!

    2. Wastage at UDC…$ 300 MILLION and COUNTING….!

    3. Wastage on the WARRENS building…..$ 200 MILLION and COUNTING….. !

    4. Wastage on the GEMS project….$ 400 MILLION and COUNTING….!!

    5. Wastage at CBC ( free MCTV boxes to BLP big Wigs )…….$ 10 MILLION and…..COUNTING…!!!

Javon Griffith a.k.a Minister of Tourism, Noel Lynch…..

GUESS what…??? ALL of these HAPPENED under the WATCH of the GREAT ECONOMIST…..Owen Seymour ARTHUR…..!!!

    NOT……David John Howard Thompson….!!!

    Tek Dat….yuh NITWICK…..!!!

We UNDERSTAND why such a PROUD record of the BLP…….makes you ANGRY ……AND LEAVES YOU WITH YOUR EYES red….!!!

‘Is it true that ministers of tourism across the region believe that Noel Lynch is the man to lead the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and contribute regionally to the success of the one industry on which we all depend, but Barbados has refused to support him because he was a politician’.

    Question Time – page 9 – Saturday SUN 27th June 2009

  289. BFP

Perhaps Noel Lynch is the man to lead the CTO. After all, he certainly made every mistake there was to make with Cricket World Cup. Look at it this way… Barbadians paid a billion dollars for his education. Surely he learned something for that amount.

Then again, maybe we learned that you can’t trust Noel Lynch to do anything right.

Ya… forget about hiring him. Once bitten, a billion dollars shy.
